TISS – 2013 in a new format

TISS National Entrance Test (TISS-NET) which will go online for the first time will be held on January 13, 2013. Until last year, TISS written test was conducted in two parts. Part -1 was common for all applicants and had 50 MCQs. Part 2 was based on the course applied for. This could be description (as in the case of Social Service) or Objective (As in the case of HR). In HR; there were 75 questions with a lot of focus on DI and Reading Comprehension. This year the test pattern will change.

There will be only one common test for all courses. This test will be objective type (MCQ) and of 100 marks. This test will have questions related to Social Sensitivity, Knowledge on Contemporary issues, Analytical Ability, and Logical Reasoning. Candidates will also have the choice of taking the test in a paper format.

  1. hello sir

please suggest anygood online mock tests for the same.
    Thanx

  2. Sir i will only appear for TISS and no other exam due to my choice of TISS. So please guide me how I can prepare GK for it. I haven’t started with GK yet so how and where I can study to crack more than 30 questions in this section, with accuracy.
    Please guide!!!

    • Dear Advika,

The GK section of TISS generally comprises static GK as well as current affairs. The questions in this section are typically simple and straightforward. To prepare for this section, you should, first of all, go through previous years’ papers so that you get an overview/feel of this section. Further, you should solve some model question papers/CL’s mock tests. Since questions from diverse areas/topics appear in this section, your preparation should encompass all of the typical sections of GK, i.e. history, polity, geography, science & tech, economy and current affairs. Some sources for your preparation can be:
      1) Lucent’s GK
      2) Manorama Year Book 2014
      3) Any national-level daily newspaper
      4) A monthly magazine, like Pratiyogiota Darpan/Civil Services Chronicle

  3. Hello Sir,

I have seen that you have mentioned XLRI and TISS are good for HR in your previous posts. Can you please tell me how is SCMHRD for HR.Is it worth joining

      • Thank you very much for your reply sir,I have a very serious concern.Hope i will get a better guidance from you:)Last year i have got through IIM L in ABM .As i wasnt interested i have given CAT again this year and wasnt good.Got into SCMHRD.I am open to both Marketing and HR.My work experience is 18months in IT.Shall i go with SCMHRD or give CAT this year again.

          • Please find the details

            10th–89
            12th –88
            Graduation—-82
            Salary—3.6lpa
            CAT 12–98
            CAT 13–88

          • Bhargavi, if you are reasonably sure of repeating your CAT’12 performance then my suggestion will be to go for a retake of CAT/XAT. Given your academic record, over 2 year work experience and marks for gender diversity you can expect calls from most IIMs at a score of 98.5-99%ile. However if you are not sure of a good performance in CAT/XAT then you should join SCMHRD as it is good for both HR and Marketing.

  4. Hello All

I completed my B.Tech CSE in 2011 in C.S.E. and have around 3+ years in IT Recruitment. Looking for a MBA in HR. is Tiss a right option and may you please let me know the best institute through which i can prepare for entrance. Weekend batch.

    • Jitendra, XLRI HR and TISS are the top two HR programs in India followed by MDI and XIMB hence you should prepare for CAT and XAT also.
If you are looking at only TISS then you do not need to join any coaching program but if you have to prepare for CAT and XAT then coaching will be required.
Career Launcher, obviously, is the best place to prepare for MBA entrances.

  5. Sir,
I am a final yr BA student in sociology. I would like to write TISS MA entrance this year for development studies. My maths is poor. Could you pls suggest some good books to prepare well? Is the requirement 10th or 12th level math?
    Thanks in advance.

    • Anita, Fortunately for you, the TISS entrance never asks very tricky questions in Math and so that should not be a problem for you. You can start by doing 9th and 10th standard NCERT books.. More than that is definitely not required.

  6. Sir, I would like to get your feedback on how good is the Rural management program in XISS-Ranchi and how good are the future prospects??
    Thanks

  7. Sir,

  8. sir i have completed my graduation last year 2012 in BA prog from Delhi university and had planned to drop a year after graduation to focus on cat and other MBA entrance exam. However i have scored very low marks in cat and in tissnet i will be scoring around 68 which is not enough to get a call from tata for hrm course. If i plan to attempt tissnet next year because i want to do mba in hr only and for which i think tiss is the best institute, i will have to drop another year (2013
) for the same which i think will be quite depressing for me.Kindly give some suggestion i dont want to waste another year .

  9. Sir,
apart from the score scored in TISS are there any other criterias they have for shortlisting for the next round example the graduation field etc .
    Thank you

    • Maria, no good b schools will be available on the basis of your CAT score but based on your MAT score you can consider BIMTECH Greater Noida and Amity Noida

      • Sir thank you for your prompt reply. I would like to further enquire about any good colleges in South if any with my MAT score.
        Thank you

I am a Teach For India 2010 fellow. I have 3 years of work experiance in social sector. I am expecting really good score in CAT. I have filled tiss too. I want to shift to corporate sector. Will it be feasible to capitalize my work experience in social sector to get an admission in one of the top MBA collage?

  16. Sir,
The CL CP Centre informed me that they will not give any material specific to TISS, not even a Mock TISS….

I was not told this when i joined as TISS was one of the institutes I aimed at from the beginning.

    Please confirm this.

Also, please let us know if there is some source (book or online material from where we can get past year/model papers of TISS) for preparation.

    Look forward to your response.

    Thanks,
    Pratiksha

  17. sir
i have selected the “online format” of this test.
would it be a disadvantage ?
Is it possible to change it now ?

  18. Sir, I’ve started preparing late for TISS NET , Please guide on:
    – Preparatory materials, books etc.
    – Will there be any program based questions?
    – What difficulty level should i expect in all four sections?

    • Dear Peeyush,

This year TISS will have only one common test for all the courses. So, there will be no course specific questions. The test will likely be of 100 questions , 100 minutes , No negative marking and will test you on English, LRDI , Maths and G.K . For G.K, please do the compendium given for IRMA. The level of the test should be less than that of CAT ( Please see TISS MOCK given by CL) and the CAT preparatory material will suffice.

  19. Sir from your experience and analysis of previous TISSNETs, can you provide some idea regarding questions which have regularly featured in these exams??
Also, any idea about sectional cut-offs, I mean how many marks do we need to clear the sectional cut-offs?

    • Gaurav, unlike earlier years, this year TISS will have only one common test for all the courses. The test will likely be of 100 questions , 100 minutes , No negative marking and will test you on English, LRDI , Maths and G.K . For G.K, please do the compendium given for IRMA. The level of the test should be similar to SNAP/CMAT and only the overall score is likely to be considered.

  25. Sir, I applied for HRM in TISS. My query is regarding the questions in social sensitivity…Can you make a rough guess at the weightage they will have in the question paper.

Also, which particular topics should I focus on….Current Affairs is common I guess for all exams with General Knowledge…but what else should I learn for TISS-NET for social sensitivity?
Also how much percentage of the paper should be done to get a call?

    • Bijoyini, Questions of social sensitivity are similar to the issues of social concern of IRMA. Please go thru the IRMA GK compendium and the video of the two IRMA GK sessions.
