The Next Not So Ordinary B-School is UPES

Dear All,

Apologies for the delay in publishing the next “not so ordinary” college; it’s all in the spirit of a robust audit. So here it is: the next “not so ordinary” college is University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun, popularly known as UPES.

UPES offers specialized MBA Programs in 10 industry oriented courses such as Oil &Gas, Energy Trading, Port& Shipping, Power, Aviation etc. The UPES MBA 2 year program fee is Rs. 8.38 lacs (This includes tuition, industrial tour charges, alumni fee, PDP fee and computing fee). The hostel expenses are an additional Rs.90,000/year (Rs.10,000/- is a refundable security deposit).

Placements
UPES provided CL with complete placement details of 238 students (across all 10 programs) passing out from UPES in 2013 for audit. I am listing down here the key offtakes from the placement data program wise. This should enable you to take a decision on UPES:

  • The Oil & Gas Management Graduates seem to be the pick of the corporates. The average CTC for students completing this course was Rs. 5.3 lacs/annum with the highest CTC for 2013 being Rs.10 lacs/ annum
  • The Energy Trading course saw one overseas placement and an average CTC on offer of Rs 4.02 lacs.
  • Among the students specializing in Aviation Management, Power Management, Port & Shipping Management, Infrastructure Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management and International Business, 50% of students were placed with a CTC of Rs 3 lacs or above.
  • Some of the major recruiters are Air India, Accenture, Global Data, GREKA Drilling, Infosys Technologies, L& T Infotech etc.

Selection Process
UPES accepts CAT 2013 / XAT 2014 / CMAT /MAT /GMAT and UPES MET (autonomous entrance exam held by UPES) scores for admissions to all its MBA programs.

The cut off for UPES, Dehradun is 70%ile in CAT’13/XAT’14, 75%ile in MAT and a minimum score of 550 in GMAT. All students meeting the cut off and having minimum 50% marks in X, XII and graduation will be invited for second stage selection process.

The second stage process will be conducted in Delhi, Hyderabad, Dehradun, Kolkata, Mumbai and Kochi. The second stage process includes GD/PI rounds.

The Application Deadline to apply to UPES through your CAT / XAT / CMAT/MAT & GMAT scores is 30th April, ’14.

All the best

  14. Hello Sir,
I have 3 yrs of work ex in marketing and banking industry and I have secured 65 % in CAT and 94% in CMAT. I have got selected in PGDM in IMI Kolkata and PGDM-RM in BIMTECH noida. I wanted to know which is a better college and I would also want to know whether NIRF ranking of IMI Kolkata is correct and what is their average placement package. Could you also please help me with any information about MDI Murshidabad and Bennet university. Are they better college than IMI Kolkata? And should I go for MBA this year or should i drop this year and prepare for CAT next year?

    • Tania, ideally you should not be considering either of the two options. Since you have a good amount of work ex. you should give a retake or should probably be looking at executive MBA options.

NIRF rankings, sadly, are not dependable at all. MDI Murshidabad is still upcoming and is quite promising. Bennett has also come across as a decent option especially because of its 7.5LPA placement guarantee. But since you have a good amount of work ex. you must not be considering this.

  15. Sir,
I’m a graduate in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, & currently working in UAE for last 3 years. I’m now interested in doing a Distance MBA(Preferably – Power Management or Energy management). I have checked some universities like UPES CCE, Venkateshwara open University(onlinevou), Jaipur National University etc., but still confused. Can you suggest one good university? Preferably, the university which will conduct online examinations.

    • Shaheen, an MBA from distance learning will not add much to your profile. However, UPES is ideally the best institute among all the above options.

  16. I’m in my last semester of my graduation. I have only given mah-cet exam n scored 70 percentile. Is there any chance to get admission in any good college of Maharashtra which has good placements? Or shall i prepare for cat november? If i start preparing for cat so from july 16 to july 17 will it be called as a gap year ?

    • Vaishali, since you are still in your final year, it would be better if you reappear for CAT and the other MBA exams. And the period of July16-17 will be considered as a gap year. However, you can take up a job and prepare along with it to fill in the gap year.

  17. Hello, I have an work ex of 4.5 years in construction field L&T. I have got admission in Christ University , bangalore. Should I take up the admission.? I am looking to switch careers though. I have a gmat score of 500.

    • Arun, this may not be a good move since Christ University is rankled fairly low. Suggest that you continue with your job and go for a retake of GMAT after preparation with a minimum target score of 650, a score of 700+ will make it easier to get into top institutes. You should ideally be looking at 1 year program of ISB Hyderabad and top IIMs but can also consider Great Lakes Chennai/Gurgaon and SOIL Gurgaon.

  18. I have cleared my GD and PI and got a Call letter from DOON BUSINESS SCHOOL Dehradun for MBA
I just want to know is it a worth college to go and study there…
    I live in Jaipur (Rajasthan)
Kindly help me and reply me as soon as possible

Right now i am working in energy management sector. Please guide

  20. How is Great Lakes Chennai (1 year PGPM Course) ?

  21. hi,
I want to know some decent colleges that i can get with my below mentioned profile:-

    10th- 76%
    12- 73%
    btech- 8.1(cgpa)
work ex- 21 months in IT company
    cmat – 137 (81 percentile)
    XAT 2016 score – 17.25

    Please guide me

    • Devesh, with your kind of work ex, it is not advisable to go to any college that accepts this kind of a score. You must consider taking CAT again next year.

  22. Hello sir
I have got 88.50 in MAT
    My academic is average.
    10th- 70%
    12th-60%
    Bcom- 68.13%
Got call from EMPI, NDIM, JIMS, IFIM, SCMS, UPES, JK Business school, Kirloskar, MS RAMAIYAH, ALLIANCE, Asia Pacific, ISBR, Christ university and many more… anyone of above mentioned considerable or should I move on to SSC or banking sector.

    • Pallavi, apologies for the delay. Among the institutes mentioned you can consider JIMS but ideally you should consider SSC or banking.

    • Snehashis, UPES will be lower in my order of preference as compared to good colleges of IPU or through WBJEE and JEE Mains.

  23. I scored 89 percentile in MAT 2015 and planning to apply in UPES dehradun for MBA. Is it a good college? regarding placements and quality of education?

    • Olivia, UPES Dehradun is a decent option and can be considered. For placements data, please refer to the post above.

  24. Sir, I am an Outside Maharashtra Candidate(OMS) with CMAT(Feb)- 99.50%. I have 2 yrs of IT exp till date and want to pursue Marketing course. I am seeking admission through DTE. Pls rank Simsree, KJ, Wellingkar, Pumba, SIES in descending order. With the above score what are my chances to convert the above colleges?

    • Jaspreet, you should consider only SIMSREE and KJ Somaiyya in this order. The others will not be able to provide you with good career opportunities and if you do not make it to SIMSREE/KJS then go for a retake.

      • Sir, I wont be able to try for next year as i have quit my job and age is also a factor for me. So, if i am not able to convert SIMSREE/KJ, will the other be ok for me to join, and if yes what should be my order of preference.

  25. Sir , i am a fresh graduate B.B.A ,i want to know what is your opinion about Universal business school(U.B.S) Of Mumbai which ia affiliated to cardiff metroplitian for doing MBA .

  26. I am final semester civil enng…I would like to know abt management courses in civil.
like mba infrastructure management upes…nicmar etc..
What are youe reviews on these two and any other options. .plz suggest

    • Prasoon, sectoral MBA programs have not done well in India and it is preferable to do a general MBA program. The two programs mentioned by you do not have good placements.

  27. sir i din score well in cat this year around 60’s . and also scored 71 in mat . I believe all colleges provide same placement like UPES christ university amity. i m still confused where to go

my first option is reattempting cat however with a backup i need to go for comparatively satisfying college pls guide me for a decent college . nd i would like to know placement package for amity course code 10019 nd other college

  28. Respected Sir,
I have persued B’arch and graduated this year. I am looking forward to take up a mba programme in supply chain management. I have a mat score of 75.42 percentile. please suggest me is it good to go for supply chain management after architecture? and which all colleges shall look forward to?

    • Rikdev, take Feb MAT also as it will be accepted by DTE for admission to MMS programs of Mumbai University. A 99.9%ile will get you admission to Sydenham and KJ Somaiya.

  29. I have given the CAT exam this year with a score of 88.23 percentile. I want to apply for some collages and UPES is one of them .I want to ask how is the oversees placement and which stream has it and what is the package in oversea placements and the countries where students are placed.

    Thanking You

  30. Hello Sir,
    my scores are
    MAT (sept) comp score 724.5 , 96.83%ile
    CMAT sept score 184, 89.88%ile
    CAT’14 73%ile
in search for a good college with assured placements.

    • Abhishek, based on your CMAT score you can apply to KJ Somaiyya and GIM. MICA can also be applied to based on your MAT score.

  31. Hi, I am all confuse which college to apply in and that is the reason i am here i got 96.16 percentile in MAT Dec 2014 and i am trying to figure out what collage is best for me, I was thinking of going for MDI Mursidabad as you know band value follows. I also have BIMTECH, IILM, AIMS, Alliance bangalore in mind, am i missing any college here i should apply in.

    • Siddharth, unfortunately most of the MAT colleges are avoidable, you could however go for a retake of MAT in Feb and apply to Mumbai University colleges through DTE. You should also take Maharashtra CET as they will consider higher score out of MAT and CET.
Among the institutes that you have mentioned BIMTECH is the best but its main program is not available through MAT.

    • Mihir, you can consider applying to MICA and also to Mumbai University colleges via the DTE. It would be useful for you to retake MAT in Feb’15 to increase your score to over 99.8%ile as this would give you a chance in the top Mumbai University colleges.

  32. sir, i am as a chief officer merchant navy on tankers and have a sailing experience of about 5 yrs . I am planning to do MBA in Oil and gas sector from UPES through distance learning. Kindly advice if its a good option and what are the expected packages that i can expect after this course.

    • Mudit,
Why are you planning to do an MBA…..?
This decision can not depend only on package… are you intereseted in Oil & Gas sector…what do you want to do in your career.
A Distance learning MBA in general does not make a lot of difference in your life.

  33. first of all thanking you for the wonderfull service you are doing to help aspirants and novices like us,hail GP sir, long live.
    Sir,
i have completed my BBA in 2013 with 73 percent and have profile of 10 with 83 and 12 th sci with 73 percentages. and am a civil service aspirant who writes most of competetive exams as back up plans and also cleared in CDS twice and SSC (SI) but couldnt fetch fruits from it( conference and PET out). now am planing to do an MBA for time being. i have took MAT and scored 84%ile,which i know is too low for a A+colges. and i took cat this time without much prep(only 3 question in quant, and 19 ques which knw 99% will be correct). and XAT,SNAP,IBSAT are in row now. sir i got call from IFIM,ISBR,ALLIANCE,UPES,ASBR,DCSMAT,IIF etc etc. and i applied for ifim also. sir isabove mentioned are good b schools?? sir as i told u am defence and services aspirant i only intend to do mba as by back up plan and as last resort only(idont want make a career out of it). i want to know which all are good which will cost me less in fees and high in value?? how is jamia millia?? pondichery university?? when is this jamia and pondi uni call for mba, heard that they have their on exams when is it usually??
seeking a helping hand from you in this regard as soon as possible
    yours true fan
    zubair ali khan

    • Zubair, most of the institutes mentioned by you are all avoidable as they have high fee and below average placements. Given your goal of Defence or Civil Services you would be better off applying to Govt Universities (Jamia, Pondicherry etc are fine) since they have a very low fee and the work load is also not hectic. This will allow you to prepare for your target exams. As a back up my suggestion is to focus on SSC and Bank PO exams rather than MBA.
Call me at 9811155160 in case you want to discuss this further.

      • Thank you sir for your valuble suggestions. Sir how can i get into central universities like pondi and jamia etc.and sir one more question is jamia hamdard??they have special exams isnt sir? When it will be notified. And do they have placements?

  34. Sir, I have completed my B.Tech in civil engineering (2014) with 75%. My 10th and 12th score is 80 and 65 % respectively. I want to pursue MBA in infrastructure or Construction Management. As such i have shortlisted UPES and NICMAR (Pune) as of now. I was having doubts as to which one is a better option for me. Please clarify.

    • Dear Anil,

Why do you wish to close your options to a particular sector? It would be good if you go for a general MBA and then try and get a placement in your sector. However, when we compare these B_schools, both would have a same standing. However, NICMAR would be more inclined towards Construction Management.

      Team CL

  35. Dear Sir
I am final year mass communication student, appearing CAT 2014. My 10th score is 88%, 12th score is 68% and till date Graduation score is 80% (upto 4th semester). I belong to NC-OBC category. I started [preparing very late for CAT and based upon my mock scores I expect to get anything from 80-90 percentile, getting consistent score of 90+ percentile in VA & LR and 65-75 percentile in Q & D. I am appearing for MICAT too and will apply in ISWBM, Kolkata.
    My questions are –
    1. Is it a good idea to do MBA from ISWBM, Kolkata or should I retake CAT ?
    2. Being from NC-OBC category what percentile I need for new IIMs and FMS-Delhi?
    3. What are the percentile of getting call from MDI-Murshidabad ?

    • Sreejani, IISWBM and MDI Murshidabad can be considered as back up options and the call for a retake should be taken once we know your performance in the papers this year. As a NC OBC candidate you should be applying to all government institutes as they have reservations and at the same percentile you will get a higher ranked government institute over a private institute.
Ideally you should be targeting a CAT score of 95%ile but a score of 90%ile can get you calls from the new IIMs, FMS, other DU Colleges and possibly JBIMS also.

  36. Sir i completed my graduation in 2013 from E.i branch . I want to pursue mba from power managent (upes) . So i want to know about its placement in power sector. Kindly guide me

    • Dear Ashish,

As mentioned in the blog itself, among students specializing in Power Management at UPES, 50% of students were placed with a CTC of Rs 3 lacs or above.

  37. Sir i completed my graduation in 2013 from e.i branch . And currently working in thermal plant . I want to know about the placement of mba upes in power management . Kindly guide me ..

    • Dear Ashish,

As mentioned in the blog itself, among students specializing in Power Management at UPES, 50% of students were placed with a CTC of Rs 3 lacs or above.

  38. Sir,
I have more than 08 years experience in Airline operations based in Mumbai.
I have scored 64% in Xth and XII th and have BBA from Madras University (correspondence) with 45%.
I am certainly not eligible to take GMAT/CAT. If i get good percentage in MAT do I stand a chance to do MBA (general management/Operations management/Aviation management)
If “yes” then which institute or university am i eligible and if no what are my options.
    Please Help!

    • Dear Prakash,

You have not mentioned your salary. If you are already getting a salary of at least Rs. 4.5 lakhs per annum then MAT is not advisable for you. The best of institutes that accept MAT score will have average packages of around Rs 6 to 7 lakhs per annum. Most institutes that accept MAT do not have any eligibility criteria on the basis of marks scored in graduation. But it is best to go through each institute’s eligibility parameters individually.

  39. SIR I M A CAREER LAUNCHER KANPUR STUDENT…..I JUST WANT TO ASK THAT :-
    MY 10th %= 68.67
    12TH %=68
BTECH(mech)=65% BTECH COMPLETED IN 2013 AND I DONT HAVE ANY WORK EXPERIENCE..SINCE MY ACADAMECIS ARE NOT SO GOOD WHICH EXAM AND COLLEGE SHOULD I FOCUS ON ???????? I HAVE GIVEN MAT EXAM THIS YEAR WITH 94.88 PERCENTILE….KINDLY SUGGEST ME EXAMS AND COLLEGE PLZZ SIR..

    • Dear Shiva, Your overall profile is quite decent. Also, your percentile in MAT suggests that your preparation is going in the right direction and that you have good potential. Thus, you should work hard and aim for one of the top 50 b-schools. The important exams for you are: CAT, XAT, SNAP, IIFT and NMAT.

      • SIR SNAP FORM WITH REGISTRATION IN EACH COLLEGE IS QUITE EXPENSIVE. AS I AM A MECHANICAL ENGINEER (10%=68.67, 12%= 68, BTECH%=65.42. )PLEASE SUGGEST ME SNAP COLLEGES WITH COURSES WHICH I CAN APPLY FOR

        • Dear Shiva,

SIBM, SCMHRD and SIIB are three good institutes that admit students through SNAP. In case you are interested in Operations, SIOM can also be an option for you. Do let us know your scores in SNAP mocks (once these start) so that we can better advise you on which institutes to aim for and which to keep as a safe option for you.

  40. Sir, i got admission in mdi murshidabad, what are the expected placements from this institute is it a right decision to take admission in this institute or not… pl help me i am very confused

    • Ishank, MDI Murshidabad will most probably provide placements in the region of Rs 6 lakh pa, hopefully with the support of MDI Gurgaon it will be able to better this.

  41. Hi, I plan to take an MBA in oil and gas management. How does UPES rank among other schools in the world for this course. Really count on your review to make my final decision

    • Wole, Oil and Gas is possibly the best program at UPES but UPES is not among the top institutes in India. which institute to join is a function of your options within and outside MBA. Please call me at 9811155160 to discuss.

  42. Hello Sir, UPES is offering me a seat in
Geo-Informatics, Electrical Engg, B Tech in CS all specialisations, Power System Engg, Electronic Engg, Production and Industrial Engg……..
KIndly Help me to choose the best field….
i Am looking for a field with maximum Avg starting placement and Future scope plus getting MBA and MTECh degrees in their specialisation….
I am also getting NIT Silchar and Agartala….
And Manipal Main Campus Industrial And Production…
In the End Drop is also a good option..
I have 12th with 93.6% and jee mains rank was around 40K
Due to some reasons i coudnt give UPES exam but they are giving me admission on the basis of my percentage!
Please Guide me, I Am in a hurry 😀
    -Aman

    • Aman, in my limited knowledge your order of preference should be NIT Agartala followed by NIT Silchar and finally UPES. In UPES your preference should be for Electronics or Computers followed by Electrical engineering.

  43. i want to knw wat companies wl come for campusing at utm for cse with business analytics students…..
i knw dat its their 2nd batch going on at utm bt i am really vry concerend ….coz if god placements r there thn nly i’ll join the institute…..
if d institute doesnt provide gud placement…i wont go there….

    • Souvik, my knowledge of engineering institutes is limited and hence will not be able to advise. Apologise for the same.

  44. Hi Sir

I hve a work ex of 2 years in accenture. I had converts of xiss ranchi and imt nagpur only 2 which I got call. I wanted to know if it is worth it to join MDI M ; I want to do MBA in HR.

    • TAV, my suggestion is to go for a retake. With a good job and a 2 year work experience you should be in a better institute. MDI Murshidabad is new and will take time to establish itself. Should be considered only if it is essential to do an MBA this year. In addition to CAT/XAT/SNAP/NMAT you should take GMAT and target ISB Hyderabad also.

  45. Please can you suggest me…
How is mechanical engineering in UPES in all aspect of future? will it be a right decision to take admission in B.Tech Mechanical in upes.
and suggest me more colleges for B.tech mech.
    Thanks

    • Chandan, I am not the best person to advise on Engineering colleges as I have limited knowledge of the area. Suggest that you check out some other source.

  46. sir i will be joining upes, dehradhun this year in chemical branch.

will the drop and 12th marks affect my chances?
    thank you.

    • Ramesh, your XII marks will be an issue and hence focus on your academics to ensure over 90% in graduation.
Additionally read a lot – newspapers, current affairs magazines, novels and get in the habit of solving puzzles/riddles.

  47. sir how is mdi murshidabad..?? can the clg be cnsidered as its the first batch… very cnfusesd.. plz provide a detail solution.. thankyou sir..

    • Raj, MDI Murshidabad is a new program and while the MDI tag is a big positive the location is an issue. It should be considered only if you do not have any other decent option.

      • sir,how much package can we expect from mdi-m??? since its a branded clg… appox. package idea wd do…

        • Raj, this is difficult but being the first batch in a poor location I would not expect the average/median salary of around 6 lakh pa.

  48. Dear Sir

My background is that i am an engineering student from BE (Mechanical) with above 50% and my 10th/12th percentile is 87%, 77% .I gave UPES online test and i have cleared it. Few questions are as below:
    1. I wanted to know and understand how are MBA placements for UPES.
    2. Please can you suggest which trade has highest placements?
    3. Is it that the companies that come they look for 60% as eligibility criteria? Since, my percentile is less than 60 % in BE, will i get placed in good companies. Please suggest.

    • Pratik, the placement details of UPES MBA are given in this post.
The best placements are in Oil & Gas.
If you do well in MBA then your past academic record does not matter.

  49. sir,how about civil engg in UPES..?? which is beetter VIT OR UPES..??? and will i be able to pursue for civil services exams after a graduate from UPES..??as it is not affiliated by AICTE….???plzzz reply fast sir,,even on my mail…..

    • HArsh, while I am not the best person to advise on engineering colleges but in my limited knowledge VIT is a better option. If UPES Engineering programs are not affiliated to a University or are not AICTE approved then you will not be able to apply for Civil Services exam.

  50. respected sir,
i got an interview call from jamia millia islamila for MA IN MASS COMM, can a person do mba after ma in mass commm and what is the future scenerio in this field partcularly from central university like jamia, i have an engineering background in electronics.. marks are as follows
    class x -93
    class xii-78.4
BE from RGPV BHOPAL- 70 PERCENT….UR VIEWS ARE HIGHLY CRITICAL AND VITAL SIR….

    • monis, you can go for MBA after Mass Communication but it will be better to pick up a job as work experience will be helpful in getting and converting interview calls from IIMs.

      • respected sir
i have heard that mass comm from reputed institutes like jamia or iimc delhi have produced reputed persons like barkha dutt, sir what is the package that a central univeristy like jamia can give in mass comm or sir should i go for my masters in engii and then try for cat, i got 2 years experience in crompton and greaves limited…. your views are highly acknowledged by me sir

        • Monis, Mass Communication leads to career in journalism and media and you should go for it only if you are interested in these areas. Else continue with your job in Crompton Greeves or go for an MBA.
If MBA is the target then start preparing for CAT’14 immediately, going for Mass Communication or MA English will not be helpful, your work experience on the other hand will be advantageous. Please contact your nearest CL center to work out a preparation plan. Alternately let me know the city you belong to and I’ll connect you to the right person.

  51. sir i m selected in doon business school dehradoon for mba program …is it good for mba what ur suggestion

  52. Dear Sir,

    My Background –
I am a CA final student. I have scored 93% in my class 10, 91% in 12th and 53% in bcom (Hons) from SOL Delhi University. I started with my article ship right after my class 12 in 2008 with a big4 firm. I did it for 3 years and then did a 1 year industrial training under the CA course at a leading IT/ITES company in the business planning and finance division till later 2012. I then took a break to clear my CA finals however I cud not clear them and hence started working again from Jan 2014. Currently I’m working in a Investment banking / business consulting firm dealing with the Invesment banking and risk advisory clients.

    My question –
Though I have not left CA and shall be again sitting for it in November 2014 attempt (I have already given 4 attempts), I have also started preparing for MBA entrances with the Career Launchers Smart CAT cracker program. I hence want to know given my profile do I have a chance of making into the top colleges namely IIM ABC , xlri, spjain and fms. Also if not them then is my profile suitable for other good IIMs.
Secondly wud it be advisable to give the Gmat simultaneously to target the early entry program at ISB and colleges abroad..??
My current package is at 4.2 lacs p.a.
Looking forward to your reply sir.

    Rgds
    Nikhil

    • Nikhil, 53% in graduation is an issue and makes call from IIMA unlikely. IIMC should not be an issue since it does not consider graduation marks for interview shortlisting, a general category candidate needs over 99.5%ile for a interview call. IIMB should also be possible because of your work experience but will also need over 99%ile. XLRI, FMS, SP Jain are all possible for you.
You should take GMAT also and target the EEO option at ISB Hyderabad.

  53. DEAR SIR,
COULD U PLS TELL ME ABOUT BML MUNJAL UNI REGARDING MBA PROGRAMME, ACTUALLY ITS A NEW UNI. SO I M CONFUSED

    • Naresh, it has just started this year, backing of Hero group is a positive but should not be considered this year if you have other options.

  54. hello sir,
i wanted to about UTM shillong as i am looking forward to apply in petroleum engineering there. and this college is mentored by upes dehradun. i am very tensed as this is my last chance. please leave a genuiene reply ASAP. thank you!:-)

  55. Sir I have taken admission in UPES in logistics and supply chain management program ..i scored 69 percentile in cat and 83 in mat ..sir I was left with no other options ..than to take admission in UPES as I am from dehradun.Sir is it a right decision or should I withdraw my admission and drop a year and prepare for cat again as I am a fresher with 75 in 10th,70.5 in 12th and 55 in bcom..

    • Alok, it will be difficult to move from 69%ile to 85%ile and hence a retake may not be a good idea. My suggestion is to either continue with UPES or look at career options outside MBA like Bank PO, SSC etc.

  56. Sir, I’ve been reading your post & various comments and it looks extremely helpful to all. Thanking you for that.

Coming to my case, I work with a Chinese MNC in electrical capital goods industry in Sales & Marketing position with 3 years experience. I want to change field (i did my engineering in Aeronautics) to Aviation and aspire to do Aviation Management. What are the possibilities in India, if any. Upsides/downsides. My current CTC is 5.2 and prospects are good at the present job.

    • Naveen, I do not think any institute offers a course in Aviation Management in India and you will have to look at options in USA for this program.

      • This university in question UPES offers Aviation management if i’m not wrong. What I am worried is the standard of courses at these colleges in India. I remember recently reading that IIM-B has tied up with Toulouse Business School n Airbus to start offering Aviation Management degree, but no further news is available anywhere. And, I am not too confident of scoring enough in CAT to book an IIM.

        • Naveen, UPES does offer the program but the placements are poor and hence not recommended. None of the good MBA institutes in India have this program.

  57. SIR , I HAVE RESCENTLY GIVEN MY ENTRANCE EXAMS AND ALSO HAVE RECEIVED SOME RESULTS .

MY RESULTS SAY THAT I CAN GET ADMISSION AT MANIPAL UNIVERSITY JAIPUR ( CSE) AND ALSO AT IP UNIVERSITY ( RANK 10,000 +DEFENCE QUOTA ) .

    I STAY AT DELHI .
WHICH ONE OF THE TWO WILL BE A BETTER OPTION ? PLEASE REPLY SOON

    • Sameer, it is not clear which field of study you are looking at. For MBA, these institutes are avoidable as they may not be able to provide good career/placement opportunities.
For Engineering IP University is likely to be a better option.

  58. dear sir,
I am an electrical engineer with almost 4 years of experience in core power sector. I want to join UPES through UPESMET ONLINE test. Plz guide me about its prospects & ROI? How good will it be for my career?

    • Koushik, UPES may not be a good option for someone with your experience. Take CAT/XAT for top 2 year MBA programs, given your work experience you should take GMAT and target 1 year MBA program of ISB Hyderabad also.

  59. DEAR SIR,
I AM AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER, WORKING IN CORE POWER SECTOR SINCE PAST 3.9 YEARS (SITE JOB). AS I WANTED TO SWITCH MY JOB PROFILE IN MANAGERIAL LINE. I AM GIVING UPESMET ONLINE TEST. HOW GOOD IS THE COLLEGE AND ITS COURSES FOR ME? HOW ARE ITS PLACEMENTS IN POWER MANAGEMENT? HOW WILL IT HELP IN MY CAREER PROSPECTS? PLZ HELP.

    • KOUSHIK, as given in this post, UPES is a decent college. A few of its programs have decent placements while the others struggle.

  60. SIR, i have got 83 percentile in feb mat,and i have got a call letter from national school of business banaglore. Will it be a good college for persuing mba ? or better i look for other options?

    • Umang, with a MAT score of 83%ile you will get only below average. While I do not have sufficient information on NSB, most of these will not be able to provide decent placements and should be considered only as a last resort. It will be useful for you to visit the campus, talk to current students, check out the placement status and then decide on joining the institute.

  61. I want to know about mba entrepreneurship from amity university noida. .is this a good option. .can I get also in this if I dnt want to become an entrepreneur. .

    • Varun, only the flagship MBA program (Code 10019 – Amity NOIDA) is recommended, all others are avoidable.

  62. Dear Sir i have scored 87 percentile in mat feb ’14 and i have not given any other entrance exam.
sir will it be fruitful to do mba in this economic scenario if yes then should i do mba this year or take drop and give other exams
please tell which college to apply for.

    • GAurav, at 87%ile in MAT no decent MBA institutes are possible and it is worth doing an MBA only from a good college. Suggest that you pick up a job and prepare simultaneously for CAT’14 and other MBA entrances.

  63. Sir, i am a mechanical engg. with 15 months of work exp. as a production engineer. i got UPES but i am confuse between supply chain management and oil & gas management..which one is better for me….which branch has bright future??? i want to utilize my production experience …so plz help me choosing the right option…

    Thank You

  64. Sir!! How is NDIM?? is it worth joining and what about their placements and actual rank?? I’m a bit confused regarding this, please help??

  65. Sir, I hav converted to IBS Pune, Alliance School of Business Bangalore and IMT Hyderabad..I want to do HR specialisation..which one should i opt? Welingkar result is awaiting..Kindly suggest.

  66. SIR I WILL BE VERY THANKFUL IF YOU PROVIDE ME THE CORRECT SCENARIO OF PLACEMENT OF SCHOOL OF PETROLEUM MANAGEMENT,GANDHINAGAR…….DOES IT WORTH TO JOIN THIS COLLEGE…..

    • SIR THE NEW CAMPUS OF MDI MURSHIDABAD PROVIDING ADMISSION FOR PGPM(2014-16 BATCH)….HOW IS IT……DOES IT IS PROFITABLE TO JOIN THIS INSTITUTE…

      • Raj, this is a new campus with a location disadvantage but should still be considered as MDI is a strong brand. What are your options?

    • Raj, the average salary in the institute is likely to be around Rs 5-6 lakh pa. What are your options?

      • Sir i have no other option i got 50 marks in irma and being a general candidate i was not selected…should i prefer spm, gandhinagar or MDI,Murshidabad…

  67. sir i have converted IRMA..
my other calls are GLIM PGDM, IIFM, LIBA..
and i am choosing IRMA over other three..
do you agree with my decision..?

  68. Sir could you through some light on GLIM PGDM..i am selected for it..i mean how is this course pedagogy and placement and ranking..i am a fresher of 2012 passout with no job in hand and PGDM is so expensive..is it worthwhile to put so much of my parents money at stake..this is the only call i have converted so far..because PGPM program of this institute has been a recognized course..would it goes same with PGDM..also how could i talk to the current students of this course..

    • Rachit, there are mixed reviews about the overall placement at GL Chennai PGDM. About a third of the batch is yet to be placed and the average CTC is apparently around Rs 6-7 lakh pa with most of the placements in the IT/ITES and BFSI domains. Given the fee of around Rs 14 lakh it does not appear to be a very attractive option. What are your other converts?

      • sir i have awaited the result of IIFM and IRMA..MY irma GA/PI is good and i have 110 out of 200 in written of irma and the cutoff is 87/200..? should i join if i convert..?

          • sir i have a waitlist no. of 6 in IIFM BHOPAL. do you think i can make it in the final list of IIFM..
            2) and sir what would you recommend GLIM PGDM or IIFM..?

          • Rachit, WL 6 should convert in IIFM Bhopal. If you are not uncomfortable with Forest Management then IIFM should be preferred over GL PGDM since IIFM has a significantly lower fee and a similar average salary.

  69. sir ,
I don’t have 50% mark in 10th only 49% but on 12th 66% and in degree {B.com, tax main} got 60% mark can i able to apply ? And i attend Cmat in 2014 and come in merit list of 79000

    • Shinu, the eligibility is 50% in graduation and since your have 60% in B.Com you are eligible. However as per the current criteria of IIMs, with your ow scores in X, XII & Graduation, you are unlikely to get a call unless you get a score of 100%ile. All other top MBA institutes are possible for you since they have a low or no weight for past academic records.

  70. I am Engg graduate from EC branch.I am going for MBA in Oil and gas management from UPES,I had work x but only for 10 months in diff field. Is it good to join there,i dnt have any other good option other than UPES…please suggest me..totally confused?

  71. SIR iam getting a call from LM THAPAR UNIVERSITY PATIALA PUNJAB..
FOR MBA, COULD U TELL ME WHAT IS THE FUTURE FROM THIS UNIVERSITY AS IT IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS ENGII FIELD…AVERAGE AND HIGHEST PLACEMENTS AND ALL REPLY IS CRUCIAL SIR..

    • Monis, apologise for the delay. Have not been able to get any concrete information on the placement front. It is a new program and will take time to establish. Given that Thapar is a well known name in the area of Engineering and has good industry contacts it should be able to get some decent placements. Suggest that you go through the interview and decide on getting the final all. What other options do you have.

      • sir i got a engineering degree in electronics with 69.88 percent, 10 is 93 percent, 12 is 78.4 percent, i will be taking master degree in engiii this year and i would try to touch more then 75 in my masters, meanwhile i would have 2 years in my masters for to crack IIFT its my first choice coz iam very much intersted in international buisness,i will also go for cat,.gp sir, electronics scope is much less as comapred to mechanical and civil in govt sector…i will attend thapar gd and pi for some experience..sir hw much time is needed to bruise up basic and advanced vocabularly and maths for IIFT coz its a time paper for 2 hours u have to qualify every section and this year in the answer sheet there were columns on class x percentage, xii percentage and graduation…

        • Monis, prepare for all MBA entrances and not only IIFT since the preparation is similar. Since this is retake preparation you should be able to manage with a couple of hours on weekdays and 6-8 hours on holidays. Focus on practice and testing alsong with detailed analysis and revision.

  72. Sir, I’ve got selected for Doon Business School, dehradun. how would u rate that college or i should try UPES dehradun, which one would be the better option. My MAT percentile is 79.8.

    • Smriti, Doon Business School is a decent back up option with low fee and average placements and can be considered favourably.

  73. hello sir i have been selected for pursuing mba in power management from upes, dehradun. so i want take an advice that after investing so much to pursue mba will it give me the fruitful and desired future?? sir, plz give me your advice..

    • Gopal, UPES is only a back up option and given the fee and salary it may not make sense for people with work experience.

  74. Dear Sir,

I am an AIMS bangaluru graduate 2009 worked with Netambit Genpact india as process associate and presently working with ICICI Bank Bhilai as junior officer(Sales) having my small own venture bankhelpline (part time)at home town and i want to became entrepreneur and want to do MBA for fund rising and all as well a CL student of 2013 and re applied for 2014 in bhilai. my 10 th 56% 12 th 57 % and graduation marks is 58% having 2 years work exp and 2 years self employed what should be my road map to do MBA ?

    Please Guide me sir.

    • B.N Seht, MBA will not help you raise funds, your work will. If you can show traction in your venture then you can raise funds even now. With a poor academic record you will need a hgh CAT score to get a call from the IIMs but most of the other institutes will be possible at a CAT score of 98%ile. Suggest you spend time with Siddharth at CL Bhilai to work out a detailed schedule for your preparation.

  75. But with my B tech back ground I don’t think so I am eligible for Oil and Gas. They prefer people who did B tech in mechanical and some other stream.

And they are offering business analytics also.. Any suggestions on this domain

  76. Hello

I got short listed for UPES GD and PI round and want to know some info about the university
Can I know how will be the UPES University and which MBA domain Is good in that University.

My background details: Working in Cognizant from May 2012 (Exp 23 months)
B Tech in Electronics and Instrumentation

    Regards
    Sriraj

    • Sriraj, while Oil & Gas and Power offer the best career opportunities I am not sure if someone with a 2 year work experience in Cognizant be considering this option. It might be prudent to go for a retake.

  77. well, thank you for suggestion, actually i want to be in core related mba,and i have 58.9% in my B.E.Is GL provides admission inspite of below 60%.if it is pls let me knw as the admission process is abt to start in GL.THANK YOU..

    • Ram, 58.9% is not a problem but GL has closed its admission window for this year and you can now apply only for 2015.

  78. SIR..I GOT MBA IN INFRASTRUCTURE IN UPES..CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST ME ABOUT THE PLACEMENTS THERE FOR A MECHANICAL ENGINEERING BACKGROUND STUDENT WITH 3 YEARS OF EXP IN POWER SERVICES

    • Ram, with a 3 year experience this may not be the right place to go. Suggest that you go for a retake of CAT/XAT and target GL Chennai and/or take GMAT for ISB Hyderabad and other good 1 year programs outside India.

  79. Dear Sir,

I am in a fix and need your inputs. I have converted Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai (1 year PGPM course).
I have also converted Universal Business School, Mumbai (1 year MBA from Cardiff Metropolitan University+PGPM from UBS)
While Great Lakes is a known institute, I am confused with UBS. Got to know about this college from careerlauncher newsletter emails and it attracted my attention.

Citing below some of my observations :

    Great Lakes – disadvantage
    1) Very high course fees (Rs 16,07,000)
    2) They offer PGPM and not PGDM or MBA

Universal Business School (features and no advantage or disadvantage) started in 2009:
    1) Course fee depends on the program we apply for.. 6 Lac for Indian MBA, 8 Lac for Cardiff MBA and 9 Lac for Cardiff MBA + Indian PGPM
    2) Endorsed by 60 CEO’s from India and abroad (they claim it to be so and admission team also provided me the link (http://www.universalbusinessschool.com/ctb/#/1/zoomed)

    3) Haven’t featured in the list of rankings issued by any of the magazines or board. On enquiring, I was given an opportunity to talk to the co founder Gurdeep Singh Anand and also one of the CEO Tarundeep Singh Anand to clear my doubts. Both of them said that untill 5 batches pass out, we are not eligible to be evaluated.

4)Awarded the best upcoming business school by ASSOCHAM (claimed on their website) (http://www.universalbusinessschool.com/)

    5) MBA degree would be provided by Cardiff University (UK)
    6) Placement 100% but offers given are not very lucrative

Compared to Great Lakes, I see two advantages here : Low fees and a regular postgraduate degree. The institute is not popular though, not sure if it would emerge as a very good one. While talking to Great Lakes alumni and current batch students, I manipulated that I would land up with an offer of around 10 – 12L from great Lakes. UBS may provide me with an offer of 8L to 10L. The fees is the main cause of concern. Kindly suggest. I am 3.5 + years experienced. Please provide your inputs sir.

    • Ankit, there is no comparison between Great Lakes PGPM and Universal Business School. While GL is an established institute with a track record of good placements UBS has to prove its credentials. The fee in GL is high but almost all good institutes are charging between 12 to 15 lakh for MBA and in case of GL you end up saving a year and hence can start earning a year early which will help you recover the investment in fee. Also with your experience of 3.5 years a 1 year program is better suited. While in GL you can be reasonably sure of getting a placement in the range of 10-12 lakh pa, I seriously doubt the ability to provide placement of 8-10 lakh, it is more likely t be around 5-6 lakh pa. Incidentally, GL PGM is approved by AICTE, pleae refer to point 4 in the FAQ at http://www.greatlakes.edu.in/programs-pgpm/faqs

  80. sir iam getting selected in mba in aviation management from upes dehradun, could u tell me what is the future of this mba, and the placement scenerio of this college in aviation management stream

    • Monis, while I do not have sufficient information about aviation management is a niche program and is likely to have restricted placement opportunities and should be considered only as a back up option.

  81. sir I have chosen mba logistics in upes may I know whether it is good choice.. otherwise could you suggest me for good college of mat score 83.5 percentile

  82. Sir, I have converted IMT hyderabad – finance. Unfortunately could made it to IMT nagpur. As we earlier discussed SIESCOM is prefered over SDMIMD. Now what should be preference order.

  83. Sir,
How is PGITBM(1 yr mba) from SCIT ??
How are the placements ?? Is it recommended with 33 months of work exp??

  84. Sir, can you tell me about NIT durgapur. is it good to join for a fresher. And how its average package. i am asking since it has a very low fee.
    Thank you

    • Pavan, NITs in general have poor placement for their MBA programs and hence are not recommended despite their low fee.

      • Sir m having 84 percentile in MAT Feb exam..sir according to thz score whch college is good for me for doing general MBA & sir in UPES which MBA specialization has 100% placement & what is the package??

        • Shuja, Oil & Gas and Energy have the best placement record in UPES and their package is given in the article above.
100% placement is a myth and hardly any institute can claim it.

          • Sir m having 84 percentile in MAT Feb exam..sir according to thz score whch college is good for me for doing general MBA??

          • Shuja, at this score my suggestion will be to look at options outside MBA. However if you have to do an MBA you can consider UPES, IFIM Bangalore, AIMS Bangalore, FORTUNE Delhi, JIMS Delhi, IIBS BANGALORE, ITM Bangalore and Welingkar Bangalore.

      • Hi Sir.. I also got though IMI Bhubaneswar… As per their website they have pretty decent placements … Should I opt for it ??

I have left the Amity Noida Flagship Programme (Last date for submission of 1st installment of fees has gone)

        • Varun, what is your academic background, marks in X, XII & graduation, when did you graduate and if working what is your salary.

          • Hi Sir,

I graduated in 2011. Have a 2 year work ex. 10th-85 ,12th 75. Engineering – 60 . Have a 2 year gap in education durring engineering. Therefore I cannot afford to drop another year.

          • Varun, while IMI Bhubaneshwar is not strictly recommended for someone with your profile but given your situation you can consider joining it.

  85. Hi Sir,

I got into upes logistics and supply chain management. I have heard from alumuni that this stream has given good placement this year. However I am worried about the scope of this industry 2 years from now when I complete my mba. I have a workex of two years and have worked with logistics group of my organisation (though not directly) . Many people are telling me that logistics industry is here to stay and there will be lot of growth in it.

Please advise if I should a sectoral mba or a general one to keep all my options open ????

Also, in my opinion , most companies have a logistics department and therefore an mba in logistics will provide many opourrunities. Please correct me if I am wrong ??

    • Varun, my suggestion is to go for a general MBA program as it has better placement opportunities. While logistics is here to stay there are very few openings in the logistics and supply chain management for MBAs that could also be the reason for a low average salary for this program.

  86. sir i have some queries..?
what should be my order of preference among IMT-G,TAPMI,IRMA,K J SOMAIYA..
I am a fresher and not expecting a package of more than 8 lpa..
so it as not better to prefer IRMA & KJSOMAIYA over IMT-G & TAPMI which have huge fees of around 15 lakh and a batch size of around 400 student..
so i would be getting 8 lpa after 2 years is it not better to choose kjsomaiya or irma with a fee of around 6-8 lpa and abtach size 0f 120 & 180 respectively..also being in mumbai for kjsomaiya is also a advantage..?

    • Puneet, IRMA is the best institute among the ones mentioned by you but many students ignore it because of its Rural Management program. KJ Somaiya also runs multiple programs and has a batch strength of over 500 students. While TAPMI and IMT G are expensive they are likely to provide better career opportunities than KJ Somaiya. My order of preference is IRMA, IMT G, TAPMI, KJ Somaiya.

    • Gaurav, NIA Pune is a decent option but its placements are by and large in the Insurance, Reinsurance, Microinsurance companies/brokerages. Go for it if you are comfortable with the industry.

    • Sushil, very little information is available about its placements and hence difficult to comment on it. However with its focus on Petroleum sector it is unlikely to have very good placements. It can at best be considered as a backup.

  87. Sir,
Please guide me regarding regarding MBA at NALSAR,it is new course starting from 2013,as nalsar is a brand name in law eduation, would it be worthy to apply there for mba?

  88. Hello Sir,
I am a CAT 14′ aspirant. This year would be my third and probably final attempt at CAT and the other exams, and I have scores of 90+ in CAT and XAT in previous attempts. Being one of the many CAT VA victims this year, my hopes were dashed yet again. I have been part of almost all coaching institutes thus far,and find CL to be the best in terms of making the exam prep enjoyable and effective. I would like to enroll for the SMART CAT Cracker program in addition to the CAT TS,Non CAT TS and Test Gym. Could you please guide me/give me an email address where I could direct this and my other queries concerning enrollment to? Thank you

  89. a little off topic; i heard last year only CMAT scores were used till CAP 3 by DTE. then again, i also heard scores of various exams, viz. CAT,XAT,MAT,ATMA were used from CAP 1 for OMS when CET was the criteria. what’s gonna be the scenario this year?

    • kenneth, last year CET was replaced bCMAT is a national test. Hence the non CMAT tests were not considered till CAP 3. This year we are back to CET being the primary paper and all others CMAT/CAT/XAT/MAT/ATMA are at the same level and hence all papers will be considered for OMS seats in CAP 1 and beyond.

      • sir, we all r aware that there multiple 99.99%ilers for every national level exam that DTE has mentioned. so how will ties be broken, considering there won’t be a GDPI?

        • Kenneth, In the case of candidates securing equal percentile Score, their relative merit will be determined on the basis of the following order of preference:
          a) Higher percentage marks in XII or  its  equivalent examination will get preference.
          b) Higher percentage marks in X or  its  equivalent examination will get preference.
          c) Birth date of the candidate – older candidates will get preference.
