Zor Ka Jhatka Dheere Se… B-School orientation session. May 16

Dear Student,

It is a fact of life that the next goal is all-consuming for us in life. It is so overwhelming that we don’t see further. While that is an asset when in pursuit, it is equally important to move on when the outcomes are known! Life moves on. So should you. Reset your goals, re-program your mind, reschedule your calendar, re-habit yourself!

We would like to invite you to an orientation session on moving ahead from a B-school aspirant to being a B-school resident. It is a remarkable shift and you need to prepare well. Else, the zor ka jhatka zor se lagegaa! This session will pacify your anxiety and we will try and bring in the element of ‘dheere’ into it!

Don’t miss it for anything!

    • Anuj, the choice of career has to be taken by you. If you are inclined towards doing an MBA then go for MBA in business operation. If your wish to do PhD in long run, then you can take up that. both are equally good options.

  1. Sir,
    My profile is..
    Class10: 75.83%
    Class12: 84.28%
    B.Com: 61.81%
    CA Inter Cleared.
    DA Candidate.
With work ex (post articleship and industrial training) at a real estate firm for 14 months as accounting associate also have been running a home bakery for last 24 months.
Sir,what are my chances of getting into IIM A,B or C. What percentile should i have? Please Help!
    Thank You.

  2. Sor,
I have completed my grad in 2014 and have no work experience but I am preparing for cat 2015.Do I have a chance of getting selected in any old IIM?
All my past records have been (almost in all >90%)

    • Ashu, with over 90% in X, XII & Graduation you can get calls from all IIMs if you get the required CAT score. Lack of work experience is not a problem. Please check out the IIM Profilizer for the IIMs from where you can get a call and the required CAT score.

  3. Sir,
I am a second year student from IIML. I have extremely good academics in Class X and XII and also good engineering graduation percentage of 91%. I have also cleared two levels of FRM (Financial Risk Manager) certification and one level CFA certification in this one year. But for some peculiar reasons like relative grading system and strict profs, I have screwed up my MBA CGPA and as of now my cumulative CGPA stands around only 6.5.
I have heard from previous year seniors that most big finance and consulting companies do not usually shortlist candidates below cgpa 7 but there are exceptions such as good relevant profiles. Can my otherwise good profile with strong past academic records and recent certification achievements compensate for my average MBA CGPA and help me land a good placement (top I-banks or treasury roles especially) in finals? If not, what really should I do now to realize my dreams?

    • Saurabh, given your profile you have a chance of getting shortlisted for the companies you are targeting. Since placements usually take place after the 6th terms you have 3 more terms to improve your CGPA.

      • Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I shall definitely try to do better performance in the second year.
But by our placecom rules, only cumulative CGPA upto first four semesters goes for finals as CVs get locked by October. By weighted average calculations, there is no way I can bring up my cumulative cgpa around 7 in this term itself unless I can score around 9+ this term.
So, my question is do top companies sometimes look beyond CGPA and consider the other aspects of profile during shortlisting during final placements or is this cgpa some sort of an extremely rigid cut-off criterion?
I have definitely heard of students with exceptional profiles such as all CFA 3 levels cleared getting into top banks with lower CGPAs but still asking- was this sort of some rigid criterion during your times?

        • Saurabh, try your best for improving your CGPA in this term.
Most comapnies do look beyond the CGPA and an exceptional profile does get shortlisted even if it is below the required CGPA.

  4. Hello Sir,
Well i just passed plus 2, going to join civil engineering in SRM chennai because that is all a could get. But am not looking forward to be an engineer. I want to get through CAT or other equivalent exams, of which i am yet to know their names off. For know i just want to get an MBA in future.
Any heads up for the beginner, may be few names of tuitions in chennai.

    • Arpit, Career Launcher Chennai is my preference 🙂
Develop a good reading habit, a newspaper daily, a current affairs weekly and a novel every month is what you should do. This will help improve your comprehension and also your GK. Do puzzles like sudoku regularly. Additionally do not use a calculator for simple calculations and in 4th semester go through the Maths books of IX and X class. Start your structured preparation in the middle of 5th semester.

  5. Hello Sir,
i am gonna be ‘preparing for cat 2015 this year . I have started my preparations , i just want to know when do most of the b schools start their academic year sessions from? As in around which month?
    Thankyou:)

  6. Sir,
I am currently a 4th year B.E. student and my branch is I.T.
Please explain to me categorically the best MBA course that would suit me. Also kindly explain the various job specializations
and hierarchy of every major MBA field like sales, marketing, finance etc.

  7. Hi Sir,

Two queries pertaining to CAT 2015.
1)Will the CAT be conducted in the month of October this year?
    2) Considering IIM-A setting the paper, can we expect difficulty level to go up?

  8. Dear GP Sir,
I am doing my MBA from IIM Indore. I have done my summer internship from a small microfinance bank called Janalaxmi Finance. I did not enjoy the role so much and I do not wish to take a PPO. But I worry I might be given one after 2-3 months since my performance was good and I had even made 2-3 good client oriented recommendations.
Does the Pcom ban students from appearing for interviews in other companies if we reject a PPO offer? In that case, is there no chance left for me but to accept the PPO in case I get one?

    • Jogols, you will have to check with the placement committee on this but in most institutes it will be considered an offer and you will not be allowed to participate in the process. If this is the case in IIM Indore also then you should have a word with the company and tell them that you would not like to join.

  9. sir my feb cmat 2015 percentile is 98.47%ile and my cet score is 92.523%ile, sir what are my chances to get into a PUMBA(home university candidate)..as i’ve got call from sies for pgdm..and sir would pgdm of sies would be better or MMS of MET or chetna..sir please help me out..?

    • SAchin, the only difference between MMS and PGDM is the lower cost of MMS and hence my preference is for MMS. Between SIES and Chetna my preference is for Chetna.

  10. Sir, i want to appear for CAT 2015…i donot know anything about it syllabus…i am thinking of joining a coaching institute to do preparation for it….kindly provide me with the information from where i should take coaching and how to start the preparation….i just completed my graduation…pls provide me with a right path…

  11. Sir,
I have converted IIM-Kozhikode PGP and joining this year. Nowadays, a new trend has come up in several IIMs where students are appearing for IAS examinations and joining the civil services after completing their MBA or after 2-3 years of work experience post MBA. Why is this happening? IAS and much of MBA are very unrelated fields so is this trend happening because many people are ending up not getting satisfied with their job offers after their MBA? Is there some problem with the job market of MBA graduates such as not good enjoyable job profiles or unexpected salaries?

    • Susovan, a Civil Servant is a Manager in the Government so there is nothing wrong in going for IAS after MBA. This is a matter of personal choice and not connected with the job situation which continues to improve every year.

      • Sir,
I agree there is nothing wrong in this career change. But what is intriguing is that there is a salary drop because many people have shifted to these government jobs from extremely high paying companies such as consulting firms and I-Banks. So looks like they were too burnt out with the corporate life or some such thing so as to now find a safe and peaceful haven in government managerial job.

  12. Hi,
Writing for the first time here.
I have got selected in SIBM Pune.
I have decided to join it against preparing for exams next year.
How is the college and which specialisation should I take ?
Marketing vs Finance? People are telling marketing is best but I have interest in Finance. Pls help. Thanks.

    • Debdeep, you are taking the right decision, SIBM Pune is a very good MBA institute and will give you top notch career opportunities in all areas hence go for the specialisation that you are most interested in.

  13. sir how are GNDU amritsar,Punjabi University Patiala for pursuing mba….please provide details regarding placements…are they worth doing??

  14. Sir,
    My profile is
    10th=83.5
    12th=69.7
    BTech=7.17
I worked in an MNC for 22 months and then left my job for CAT preparation
Sir,what are my chances of getting into XLRI,FMS,MDI, or any other good B-School? I know IIMs will be difficult for me? What percentile should i have?
    Plz help!!

    • Jyoti, IIM A and C will be possible at a CAT score of 99.7%ile, IIM B also is possible as your work ex might compensate for your marks. Most of the B schools outside IIMs have low/no weight for past acads hence they would not be a problem

  15. Dear Sir,

Academic record : 10th : 61%, 12th: 72% , B.tech Mechanical : 67% having an experience of 4.9 years continuing in Procurement & Supply Chain. I have appeared for Cat 2014 but not able to scored better. Now for Cat-2015, i will apply and for that i have registered for CL test series. Can you please suggest me the exam to be prepared for along with Cat, as I want to be in one of the premier b-school with specialization in Marketing & Sales. Will my huge work experience is a barrier to fulfill my higher study. Also please guide me ,for 1 year MBA programme also.

    • Suva, among the Indian MBA entrances, apart from CAT, you should be taking XAT (for XLRI, SP Jain and XIMB), IIFT entrance test, SNAP for SIBM Pune & SCMHRD Pune and NMAT for NITIE. You should also be taking GMAT by end August to open the possibility of 1 year MBA from ISB Hyderabad and IIMs (PGP Executive).

  16. Dear GP Sir,
What weightage or importance does the summer internship performance have in the MBA course of IIMs (apart from the lure of PPOs)?
Does a below par or “unsatisfactory” rating from a company make a student ineligible to get the degree at the end of second year?
On the flip side, does an excellent rating raise the average CGPA of the overall course? I am restricting my question to the IIMs only.

    • Gautam, normally a low rating in the summer internship does not make a candidate ineligible for the degree but can definitely impact your CGPA. An internship is an opportunity to learn and I would not be too worried about it impact on CGPA.

      • Sir,
But wouldn’t internship disqualify a student for MBA degree if a certain company refuses to give the student the completion certificate simply because he could not finish a long project in a short period of 2 months? Has such a case ever happened?

        • Saurabh, everything is possible but to the best of my knowledge this has not happened and would not worry about this.

  17. Sir, Could you summarize what happened in the session or upload a video for the session.
I am from Jalgaon, Maharashtra and I don’t think you would be having a session anywhere close, so I would appreciate a summary or a video.

  18. Sir, can we also have such session in mumbai?? We always miss these sessions. I have also requested gejo sir but sir, if possible, let us have a b-school orientation session in mumbai.. plz

  19. Sir,
I have given CAT 14 and scored 97%. I work in a reputed MNC. I want to get into the old IIM’s and hence I have started studying. But the issue is I don’t know what to study. The frequency of mocks are not enough for me to depend only on them. Please help me in deciding the future course. Does it really help if I join coaching again( I passed personal interview in founder’s batch, but not able to join due to the fees). Please help

    • Roshan, with a 97%ile in CAT’14 you do not need a classroom coaching program. Your focus has to be on practice, testing, analysis and revision. Start by revising your last years material, the MCQs in the material and the Mocks are important. Do focus on the questions that have a short cut or which clear a concept. Re-attempt all questions, including the RC passages and LR sets. Target finishing these papers by end July. Do not forget to highlight/bookmark the important questions for revision. Simultaneously keep taking the Mock CATs as per the schedule. An hour on test gym daily would be helpful.
If you think that you need to improve your question solving abilities (and increase your speed) then you can consider enrolling for Smart CAT Cracker Comprehensive else go for Test Series + Test Gym. Analysis and revision of all tests will be important to ensure that you reduce errors in the test.
In Oct, along with the Mock CATs you should go through all past papers of CAT, XAT and IIFT.

  20. Sir,
I got 90%tile in CAT and 91%tile in XAT. this year.
I have 3.5 years of work experience in IT.
Shall I retake CAT /XAT this year or shall I prepare for GMAT?

    • Sovan, do both – CAT/XAT as well as GMAT. Target taking GMAT by end Aug so that you can apply for ISB Hyderabad and other top B schools outside India and then focus exclusively on CAT/XAT.

      • Dear Sir,

I scored a 690 in GMAT (45 Verbal and 40 Quant), my CAT score last year was 65 percentile. Please guide me whether I should give the GMAT again or prepare exclusively for CAT and XAT.

        Thanks!

        • Akansha, Go for both CAT/XAT and GMAT. While you have a good GMAT score an improvement to around 720-740 in GMAT can get you top MBA institutes out side India.
Your good GMAT score but a poor CAT score indicates that while you are sound in your fundamentals it is your art of taking the paper (CAT/XAT) that needs to be worked on. While in GMAT you have to solve all questions that come your way in CAT you shave to choose the questions to attempt.
Suggest that you consider enrolling for Smart CAT Cracker Comprehensive and/or CAT Score Booster to be well prepared for CAT’15.

          • Thank you for your response Sir : )

I was infact deliberating between joining classroom coaching at CP, Delhi or enrolling for the Smart CAT Cracker Course. What do you suggest?

            I am currently working.
I aim to practice a lot more for the exams and give my best shot in 2015. I would like to add that I am an ex-CL student.

          • Akanksha, as discussed over the telecon, SCC Comprehensive should be sufficient for you.

  21. Sir,How to answer these bank interview questions:
why do you want to join banking sector after b.tech ?
How engineering will help in banking?

    • Dear Tom ,
Thanks for sending in the query.
Though the answer to your quetion is NOT straight forward you can choose following lines to articulately express your answer.
      1. You are passionate about banking and want to make a career in it. ( Mind you when you do so , you need to have clear knowledge about banking sector , job profile and responsibilities etc. )
      2. You can link the knowledge and experience acquired by you in the engineering studies with Banking , ( it is easy in the case when you are an IT Graduate as banking has IT as its base now)
Let me tell you that the answer to your question should be convincing and for that you need to dig deep and work t out completely.
      Hope it will help.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL
