I have always believed that one needs to reinvent himself to remain relevant. While the delta of innovation can be small or big, however there comes a time when one has to stop doing course correction but change the course itself.
Technology has been a great enabler; since last year I have been experiencing it along with many of you. The webinars have been an extremely potent medium to interact with you all and many of you have acknowledged the humongous benefits from it & I also see it to be a very relevant medium. The number of attendees in the proctored mock 1 analysis and discussion has tripled over last year.
Based on the feedback from many of you, I have been working on developing a new prep program for MBA aspirants. This program has been designed keeping in mind that each of you has a different requirement and needs a program which is flexible and allows you to focus on your areas of improvement.
I would like to invite you all to be part of this new initiative. This is a beta version and I would be looking at your active participation by means of your feedback on the Programme.
It is a 60 hours program covering all the sections (QA, DI, LR, EU and RC).
Learners would be selected on based on internal selection criteria, which includes but not limited to education background, previous CAT percentile, work experience, location etc.
Interested students can register here and the remaining information would be sent to you through an email by Tuesday.
Dear sir,
Following are my details

Can I expect call from IIMs and which B schools I can apply??
Thankyou
Astha, unfortunately calls are unlikely for you from any good institute except NITIE. Suggest that you go for a retake.
Hi GP Sir,
I have got 76.5% in Xth
68% in XIIth
and 76% in Engineering in 2009.
I have 4.3 years of Work exp in Telecom industry.
I attempted Cat in 2010 but due to problems i could nt continue.
I do not want to do distance learning MBA, either want to do regular or Executive.
For a regular MBA i have to spent another 2 years, will it be fair 2 yrs MBA with 4.3yrs of Work Exp.
Please advise Sir, My Cat prep is also not upto the mark as of now, but i am planning to give CAT this year in 2014.
Suggest me for both regular and Exe MBA in IIMs, FMA, Symbiosys,MDI ggn etc.
Thanks,
Sonam
Sonam, unfortunately the distance and part time MBA programs are not well regarded by the industry in India hence it will be better to focus on the regular MBA programs (both 1 and 2 year). Given your work experience a 1 year MBA program from ISB or the IIMs is preferable but the 2 year MBA program can be your backup option. Suggest that you take CAT/XAT and GMAT since the preparation is similar.
Thanks GP Sir, I will give Cat this year, I am a bit confused for 1 year program from IIM’s, Can you please suggest from which IIM’s should i opt for and make it as my focus for 1 yr MBA program.
Sonam, the 1 year program of all IIMs is good and you should go apply for all of them and to ISB. Great Lakes Chennai can be a backup option.
Sir the following are my scores

working currently as financial analyst at reputed firm. What are my chances of getting top B-school calls .I also have been part of many clubs and extra curricular activities at national level.
Priyanka, 77% in graduation makes IIMA difficult. IIM B is possible due to your work experience and IIMC is also on as it does not consider graduation marks. The interview shortlisting is usually on the basis of academic profile and CAT scores only, some institutes have weightage for work experience also. Extra curricular activities play a role in the interview only.
i am dipyendu roy, i scored 80% in classX, 78% in class X11, 7.8 in btech.i am 29 years of age. i have worked for 1 yr in wipro call centre, i am presently working in sbi for 1 yr.is there any chance that i will get a call from iim a,b,c even if i score 100 percentile in cat 14-15 or 15-16…please please reply…my email id is roy.dipyendu@gmail.com
Dipyendu, it appears that you are not an Engineer and hence with a 2 year work experience and around 80% in X, XII, Graduation you have a chance of call from most of the IIMs if you get a CAT score of over 98%ile. IIMC however will require over 99.5%ile.

Robin, With your marks 80% in X and XII IIM A, B & C are unlikely unless you get a 100%ile in CAT. All other IIMs and most of the other top MBA institutes are possible at a score of over 98%ile in CAT. FMS and IIT Mumbai will need over 99%ile.

i m planning to give cat ..
is it possible to get iim a, b,c for me.working in mnc,for almost 1 year
Nimesh, with the current criteria IIM A is unlikely unless you get a 100%ile in CAT. IIMC is possible but will need around 99.8%ile. By the end of 2014 you will have a 2 year work experience which will compensate for your average acads performance in IIMB but you will need a score in excess of 98%ile. All other IIMs are not a problem.

sir can i get any iims
neha, you should go for a retake, it will not be difficult to increase your VALR score. However do pick up a job since CAT/XAT preparation, especially for a retake, is not a fulltime occupation. Given your academic performance IIM A, B and C are unlikely unless you have a 100%ile but all other IIMs are possible for you.
I am placed in wipro sir..but joining is in 2015..i am not into very cocuricular activities…i m just a part of an ngo which i joined recently…plzz guide me sir.what should be done
Neha, since your joining is at least a year from now, you can look for another job in the meantime.

Akansha, IIM A and B are difficult unless you get almost 100%ile in CAT, IIM C will need over 99.5%ile other IIMs are possible at a score of over 98%ile.
Sir I have just started preparation for CAT 2014. I’m following Arun Sharma’s books and i give 4 hours per day. Its been ten days since i started. I’m currently in the 6th semester of my B.Tech program.
My X score: 94.3%
My XII score: 79%
Current CGPA: 8.21.
Sir is it possible for me to hit a 98+ % (preferably 99%) if i continue preparing this way or do i need to devote more time?
Chandrajoy, you are giving enough time for preparation. Do combine your preparation with practice exercises and mocks so that you realize your weak areas and work on them. All the best.
Sir how do i prepare for VA? I do read the editorial of Hindu every day. But i do not think that’s going to be enough.
Chandrajoy, you should try comprehending whatever you read. While reading you should focus on the structure as well as grammatical composition of sentences. Note down the words which you are not able to understand and refer to a standard dictionary for the same. Practice through previous years papers to get an idea of the type of questions being asked. If you are weak in vocab, “Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis can be a good starting material.
Thank you sir. I just got the norman lewis book. your advise has really been helpful
Sir, what about low scores in 10th n 12th and clearing chemistry & maths later on? i was not interested in science but had to take up science as my family wanted me to. my scores in english, history, etc. are excellent. pls guide.
Kavita, the colleges which have been suggested to you don’t give much weightage to academics provided that you do well in GD and PI.
Sir,
my academics:
10th-76
12th- 77 bt not cleared chem and maths (later cleared through national open school)
grad- 58 % history hons (considered above average in history)
my cat score is 99.9 percentile.
2 yr gap b/w first and second yr due to cancer
work exp- freelance technical writer & history tutor
Kavita, that is an excellent score. What is your question?
sir, i want to ask if i have any chance of getting into any reputed IIM or B school?
Kavita, you can easily convert your calls from FMS, NITIE and even IIM-C if you have calls from these colleges. Your gap in college is justified and you can convince the panel regarding the same. Prepare well for the GD/PI rounds.

Dear Sir,
Still waiting for your reply….
sir i have a percentile of
10th-90
inter-95
b.tech (Jntu)-77
can i get a call from iim-a or iim -b if i have a cat score of 99 percentile
Keerthi, you have a good academic profile and with a score of over 99%ile you can get a call from IIM A and B.
Dear sir,
could you let me know the name of B-schools which are providing supply chain management and what percentile should i get in cat exam?
academics
X -81%
Xii -85.4%
B-tech -71%
Jay, to get into Supply Chain Management you should specialise in Operations from atop B school.
Sir, i filled QA attempt 18 correct 14, VA -attempt 19 correct 14…in the percentile predictor.initially it was showing 76 percentile but in the revised prediction it’s showing 91.4 percentile. which one i should trust? and with respect to these score which colleges i should apply? for getting call from new iims what percentile required?
Sha499, The percentile predictor works on the basis of some statistical parameters which represent past CAT years trends and another set of indicators of the current CAT trends. Ever since the CAT exam window has concluded thousands of students have submitted fresh data to us. We have thus been able to get a better understanding of CAT 2013 . At this point of time, we have a significantly large amount of data which was sufficient reason to revise our estimates. The current estimates are more accurate than the first estimate. Your B school Advisory will also show a different set of schools.
New IIMs are unlikely at 91%ile for a general category student.
Sir, My revised percentile estimates as per the percentile predictor are as below
QA-88.56
VA-97.82
OA-95.86
My Academics
10th-86
12th-74
Graduation-70.4
I belong to the NC-OBC category. What IIM calls can i expect and which Bschools should i apply to?
Jaggi, your marks in XII and graduation are a small issue but I think you could be in line for a call from almost all IIMs. FMS, IIT Mumbai/Delhi, NITIE etc are all possible for you.
Jaggi, as a NC OBC candidate with decent academic record at 95%ile you can expect calls from all IIMs, FMS, IIT Mumbai/Delhi, NITIE and other top Govt funded institutes. Start PDP immediately after IIFT so that you are well prepared for the next stage of the selection process.
Sir, why don’t you make a similar kind of programme for the WAT-PI/personality-assessment stage? Something like “Smart Interview Cracker”? I would love to have such a kind of tool as part of my WAT-PI preparation.
Jogols, These are available 🙂
1. Smart Interview Cracker – a 3 hour seminar on cracking the MBA entrance interview.
2. Power PDP – a complete interview preparation program (online)
Oh that is great sir! Kindly tell me how I can purchase these courses? I am a CL test series student.
Jogols, please await a mail from arun.mittal@careerlaucnher.com on this.
sir why has the percentile been revised in the percentile predictor??
earlier it was showing 81% in QA now its showing 93
Vishwaas, with more data available (of performance by students) we have revised the percentile predictor and am sure that this reflects your performance correctly.
Sir
1)I got a software development job with CTC 17 l.p.a ,so which which of these institutes would truly help me advance my career?
2)I didn’t prepare for cat other than giving a few mocks ,so do would it be better to put in an attempt next year as well?
I will also have 1 year work ex by that point.
PradeepGupta, you should restrict yourself to the top IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS and FMS only. With a 17 lakh per annum job you should go for a retake if you do not get into the top IIMs.
Sir,
My CAT did not go well and sincerely i do not wish to make guesses over my accuracy. The CLCPP shows a percentile of 86.XX which is quite demoralizing.
X: 79%; XII: 81% (science); BA (H) English: 60.45 (delhi university); extra curricular: painting and poetry and internships for marketing.
Sir, i have applied for SP Jain (though with little hope).
My CMAT score is 193 (90%ile) rank 5273.
NMAT mocks have been 193 as the highest and IIFT sample papers too ended with a highest of 37.
I am doing MA but frankly all i want to do is, Marketing. I am in love with it and i cannot study MA (i hate the classes).
Please suggest MBA marketing colleges (among the top 30 specifically, my dad won’t lemme go anywhere else because MA from DU seems much more promising.)
What should i do?
Pihu, MICA is possibly the institute that you should target. Focus on XAT (and SNAP) preparation since these tests will take you to good institutes. A good XAT score will be helpful for MICA. Please call me at 981155160 in case you want to discuss the issue.
Sir
According to the CL Predictor,I am securing 90%tile in Section 1,99.82 in Section 2 and 99% overall.
I have had similar performances in other mocks as well ,so I think this estimate should be correct.
X =94
XII =91
B.Tech= 75
Work Ex=0
I know I can’t get IIM calls,which B-Schools should I target?
And as it is important these days, category=GENERAL 🙁
Pradeep, your B.Tech percentage is an issue for IIM A and IIMC requires over 99.5%ile but call from all other IIMs is possible for you. FMS call is also possible but you will need an exceptional interview to convert. MDI, NITIE, IIT Mumbai are all possible.
Sir, i filled QA attempt 18 correct 14, VA -attempt 19 correct 14…previously it was showing 76 percentile for this in percentile predictor. but in revised prediction it’s giving me 91.6 percentile. So, which one I should consider? and with respect to this prediction will it be worth applying for IMT, IMI,KJ,TAPMI,XIMB? Please guide sir. and apart from this which colleges i can apply ?
Sha499, Go by 91.6%ile, with more data available we have updated the Percentile Predictor.
While XIMB is unlikely at this score you should apply to IMT, IMI, KJ, TAPMI and BIM since these is a small possibility of a call from these institutes.
Do continue with your focus on SNAP and XAT preparation.
Hi

Category General.
I am looking to appear for the tests in 2014.
As i start my preparations ; I need to set a target in my mind.
I realize that my b.tech percentage is on the lower side.
I need help on which colleges should I be aiming for and what score am I looking at.
Is there a possibility of getting calls from IIM (A,B,C)?
If yes , what should be the score I am targeting?
If not IIMs , what are the odds of getting through XIMB?
Please help me set my goals accurately.
Pratik, with 62% in graduation you will need almost 100%ile in CAT for IIM A and B but IIM C will be possible at 99.6%ile. Most of the institutes outside IIMs are not unduly worried about school/college marks and with over 97%ile in CAT/XAT you should be able to make it to MDI, XIMB, NITIE etc.

Pratik, IIFT gives interview calls on the basis of the test score only. However your excellent acdemic profile will be of great help in converting the call.
Hi sir,
I gave my cat on 5 november, 2013 slot-2.
sec-1 16(atmost 1 wrong)
sec-2 17(90% accuracy)
x- 85%
xii – 77%
engr. – 96%
categ. – NC OBC
Sir what percentile can I expect and will I be able to get calls from all IIM’s(especially ABC) also what will be the chances of converting those calls.
Vipin, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that you would be in the 85-90%ile range in CAT and have a chance of getting calls from all IIMs due to good academic record. Conversion will be a function of your performance in the personality assessment stage since CAT has a low weightage in the overall score of most IIMs.
Hello sir,i had my cat today in morning..i hav attempt 26 question,13 each section..in which 24 are right and 2 might be right or wrong??
What prcentile can i expect??
Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you should apply to.
However you are likely to be below 80%ile and hence no decent B school will be possible. Suggest you forget CAT and start preparing for the other MBA entrances – SNAP, NMAT and XAT.
Sir my academic profile is:
Xth: 85.33%
12th: 94.3%
Btech: 83.9%
Category: OBC
Sir what percentile should i get in XAT to get calls from XLRI, XIMB.
And what shud be my minimum number of attempts to reach that percentile..
GP Sir, i had my CAT today 1st slot. I attempted 37(18-QA, 19-VA&LR). with respect to 75-80% accuracy what percentile can I expect?
Sha499, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. However my estimate is that you should be in the 90-95%ile range.
i did so sir, but it’s very strange that its showing only 75 percentile. Is it true? why is it so less? i couldn’t understand. please clarify this.
Sha499, what data did you fill in – attempts and corrects for each section?
Sir, i filled QA attempt 18 correct 14, VA -attempt 19 correct 14…
Sha499, your attempts are decent but your accuracy is low. 37 attempts with 9 incorrect answers will lead to a raw score of 75 and is likely to be in the 75-80%ile range only. In case you have 6 wrong answers then the score would be in the 85-90%ile range.
Suggest you forget CAT and focus on the other test which also lead to good MBA institutes.
Sir,
My academic record is as follows-

Do i have any chance to make it to a good B-School?
I have no work experience and graduated in BBA.
How much percentile should i aim for?
Sudipta, while the old IIMs are ruled out due to low marks in XII and Graduation, the other IIMs and other top B schools are possible subject to at least 95%ile in CAT/XAT.
Hiii GP sir…!!!

Sir, What percentile should i secure in CAT 2013(on 10th of Nov) in order to get calls from the IIM’s.
Surjeet, You will have good profile scores and if you can get over 75%ile in each section a call from all IIMs is possible. To get 75%ile you should target around 12 net correct answers in each section. Please refer to the blogpost CAT 2013: How many attempts for an IIM call?. Target attempts (categorywise) for other institutes are given in additional videos at http://www.careerlauncher.biz/cat2013/
And one more query for u sir….which is the best unproctored and proctored mock of CL which resembles the present CAT pattern…? 🙂
Surjeet, Mock CAT 8, 9, 10 and Unproc 21 are very similar to CAT’13.
sir, what should be the ideal time division for an average-moderate DI in section 1….and if i want to solve another 15 with 100% accuracy what should be the best time division for it too….waiting for ur reply eagerly sir… 🙂
Sir, I am now attempting 10 ques from sec-1 out of which 8 or 9 are correct, and 16 from sec-2 out of which only 8 or 9 are correct. My slot is on Oct 30th. What should i be doing from now so that i can attempt 18 ques with a couple of errors from each section.
I am done with almost all the tests from CAT based tests from Test Gym and i am left with the previous years papers.
Sharmila, apologise for the delay in responding to your query.
At present you should focus only on practice and rrevison of past CAT papers and the Mock CATs that you have taken so far as suggested in the blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin.
Sir,Please upload remaining fundabook practice exercise sums of Algebra and Number system on SIS.
Gaurhari, recording and uploading is on.
Do freshers have any chance of getting calls from IIM A,B,C ?
Jhalak, freshers also have a good chance of a call from IIM A, B and C. Focus on your preparation a good CAT + Profile score is required for a call.
hi sir ,
it ravi
Xth – 78%
XII- 84%
Btech IIT – 8.4/10
which IIM i can get from ABC , FMS .
can i go for GMAT , would it be possible for getting a good b school . with working in MNC 2 years.
Ravi, FMS shortlists only on the basis of CAT percentile, last year it was 98.6%ile for general category candidate but you should target a 99%ile to have a good chance of converting the call.
With a good academic track record plus 2 year work experience you will have a good profile score (check SIS for he exact value for each institute) and hence calls from the top three IIMs (A,B & C) are possible.
GMAT should be considered only if you are keen to go to ISB Hyderabad or to a top institute outside India for MBA. If yes then this is a good time to take GMAT because due to CAT you would be 75% prepared.
Sir,i have solve CAT 09,10,11,12…out of 35 question,29-30 question were right in each attempt…16-17 question in VA/DI and 12-13 in va/lr…what prcentile can i except with this accuracy…sectional..??
Vikas, estimating percentiles is not possible with this data. 29-30 correct answers out of 35 attempts is decent, QADI appears to be on track but VALR is low, it should go up by at least 4-5 questions.
Sir,
My 10th(CBSE board) %age is 66.66%, 12th(State Board) is 78.75%, B.tech CGPA is 69.97. I’m from NC-OBC category. Do I have any chance to get call from IIM A, B, C if I get 99-100 %ile in CAT ’14. Or wouldn’t I be called by IIM A, even if I get 100 %ile in CAT?
Akash, with less than 80% in X, XII and graduation IIM A & B could be difficult but you still have a good chance in IIM C with a good CAT score. With a 10%ile in CAT you should get calls from all IIMs
Sir,what are the chances in UBS CHANDIGARH with 90 prcentile..???
Does academic profile matter there??
Chander, you have chance in UBS at 90%ile. Academic profile is not important.
I was thinking to enroll in SMART RC CRACKER.After all my efforts i have failed to improve in rc. My cat is on 25th.Will it be of any help to join now.
Chirag, the student feedback on Smart RC Cracker is excellent and they have reported improved performance in RC so you should enroll for Smart RC Cracker.
Hello Sir,
My academic stats are as follows :
X – 91 %
XII – 85%
B.Tech – 75%
Work ex – 12 months (as on 31/08/13)
Category – General
I have been scoring over 80% in my mocks, what %ile shall I be aiming in cat for getting calls from the IIMs ?? Also, what are my chances for other premier B-schools ( non-CAT ) ??
Awaiting your response sir.
Ankit, please check the CL Percentile Predictor for an estimate of your CAT percentile based on your performance in Mock CATs. My feeling is that at present you are a notch below the score required for calls from the IIMs and other top B schools. For the top IIMs you will need a score of overr 98%ile to have a chance of a call and over 95%ile fo the new IIMs. Hardly any good B-school is available at a score below 95%ile.
Please refer to the blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin to work out a plan to improve your score.
Thanks alot sir for your inputs.
I have been focusing solely on CAT for past 3 months and by giving regular tests on Test Gym, I have been able to improve my scores in the section tests as well as mocks. I’m able to score 96-97% in the VA/LR section now, but quant section remains to be a cause of worry for me.
I get scores varying from 65-80% in the quant section, hence, my overall score drops down. I have been trying to various techniques to improve my quant score and have been trying to identify the difficult ques meant to be left in the mocks.
Any advice or strategy would be of much help sir.
Thanks alot
Ankit, are you able to solve the Mock QADI questions afterwards? If yes then it is a issue of test taking, if not then it is an issue of lack of knowledge.
I presume you are suffering due to test taking techniques and hence suggest that you first fill up the strength finder to understand the question types that you should be attempting in the Mocks. For strength finder please refer to my blogpost The Mystery of R1, R2, R3 Solved: Presenting the Strength Finder
my cat is on 1st november..!!
N please tell me..tht how many question would be my target..??
Kamal, since you have just 20 odd days to start and complete VA, my suggestion is to immediately enroll for the Smart CAT Cracker, while you need only the VR and RC modules, financially it will be prudent to take the full program choice.
Additionally you could follow the schedule suggested in my blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin, the post also tells you which CAT papers to focus on.
Thank you so much GP sir,but can u please tell me that how many question would be my target to cross 90 %ile.??
Kamal, based on CAT’12 a score of about 40 marks would be sufficient to get over 90%ile in each section.
Sir,my DI/QA prep is going very well,but i haven’t start VA…is it too late???….i want 90+ %ile…please give me some tips..thankyou..!!
Kamal, what is your CAT date?
Sir,attempt of 40 question with 30 correct gives me what precentile??
Deepak, it would be around 90%ile
But sir,30 right question gives me 90 raw score and 10 wrong question will make my score 80,and 80 raw score give me 94.5 prcentile..!!
Deepak, there is a black ox of normalisation that no one is clear about so I would hesitate to make it over 90%ile.
In my earlier response I had incorrectly given it as 80%ile, have corrected it. Apologise for the error.
Dear Sir, As CAT is very near now. would you let us know when will Fundabooks Algebra practice exercise be available on SIS.
Keshav, fresh videos are being uploaded. Algebra will also start by early next week.
Sir my academic profile is as follows:

12th 65.5% with grace in maths
Btech: 6.5 cgpa
Category: OBC
Work Experience: 0
Sir, how much percentile should i get in CAT to get a call from iim A,B,C ,K and L ?
Nisha, target 95%ile in CAT with a minimum of 90%ile in each section.
Sir,my CMAT was on 29th sept 1st slot. It was quite tough paper in comparison to other slots. I am expecting 200-210. will i get KJ Somaiya PGDM in this score? I ll apply for feb cmat but will it be sufficient for PGDM?
Sha499, 200-210 is less for PGDM in Somaiya.
Sir,I am a CL class student. When will remaining fundabooks practice excercise videos be available either on SIS or youtube.
Gaurhari, the recording process is on. You will see more videos shortly.
Sir, I am getting 240-270 in cmat mocks. should i apply to JBIMS and KJ Somaiya?
Sikder, It is too early for JBIMS admissions which is managed by DTE Maharashtra and will open in Feb/Mar’14. However 240-270 is low for JBIMS for an OMS candidate, the target score has to be 330+. If you do not get a good score in Sept’13 CMAT then go for a retake in Feb’14. For Somaiya (PGDM and not MMS) it could be acceptable.
Thank you so much sir

Sir, how much percentile should i get in CAT to get a call from iim A,B,C and K ?
Sharmila, overall score of 95%ile with a minimum of 90% in each should get you calls from the top IIMs.
Thank you Sir.
Sir, to get a 90%ile in each section what should be the minimum number of questions that i need to attempt in each section?
Sharmila, based on CAT’12, a score raw of around 37-38 ould be good enough for 90%ile in each section. This means 15 attempts in each section with a couple of errors.

what are my chances of converting IIM B,C,K,I,L,S and FMS? how much percentile should i target?
I am getting around 70 percentile in my mocks. I am giving SNAP also. how much marks i should target in SNAP to secure a call from SIMB and SCMHRD? (not percentile, i want to know the marks, it will be helpful). I gave one mock for SNAP, in which i got 76.
waiting for your reply SIR…:)
Sikder, 70%ile in Mocks should convert to over 80%ile in CAT which could be a shade lower than what an SC candidate with good academic record would need to get a call from the top IIMs. Your acads and work experience are good, just push yourself a bit to reach around 80%ile in Mock CATs and all calls are possible. In CAT your target score should be 80%ile in each section and 90%ile in aggregate.
Regarding SIBM and SCMHRD, the score required changes with the level of difficulty of the paper and hence it is difficult to estimate the score for call. However a score of 80-85 should be sufficient.
Thank you so much Sir. I am trying to improve my mock score. Hope i can perform well on D-day. 🙂
All the best.

Is dere any chance to get a call from IIMs ??
if yes den at how much percentile…..?
Bhawana, a 98-99%ile will get you a call from most of the IIMs. For IIM A you will need to be in the top 50 in your category. IIM B might not be possible without a couple of years of work experience.

any hope for old IIMs ?
Dip, as a SC candidate with 2 years work experience you have a chance in the old IIMs. Target a minimum of 90%ile in CAT with a minimum of 85%ile in each section.
Sir,
In CMAT, what should be the ideal score I should aim at for getting a call from SP JAIN or JAMtNALAL BAJAJ if I am a non maharashtrian(belong to delhi) and belong to SC category?
Radhika, there is no reservation in the OMS category in JBIMS. Also SP Jain does not have any reservation. All Govt institutes have reservation for SC/ST/OBC and a CAT score of over 90%ile with minimum of 80%ile in each section can get you calls from top institutes. Obviously if you score higher it will make your task easier.
Hello Sir,

Will I have a shot at the old IIMs like ABC and L if I can crack CAT? I have taken GMAT already and scored 720. Or is any IIM ruled out in my case?
Raj, You are not ruled out of any IIM your CA would be helpful in getting calls.

what percentile i should aim to get call from all iims and fms.will i get a call from fms with such low graduation %..what percentile should i get for fms
Aakansha, an overall score of 90%ile with a minimum of 85%ile in each section will be a safe score for a SC candidate for calls from top IIMs and FMS. However a 95%ile will make it a surety. Unfortunately your graduation score is a let down after a good X and XII but should not be an issue.

I will be appearing for CAT , 2013. Kindly let me know what percentile should ensure call from all IIM’s ( Specially looking for IIM C )
Thanks & Regards,
Suman Sanyal
Suman, a general category candidate should target 99%ile in CAT to be sure of call from the top IIMs. However being a girl with over 2 years work experience you can get calls at a lower percentile also.
Sir,

Hi GP sir,
My Acads are:

Grad = 5.76 GPA (B.tech IIT delhi)
Work Ex = 60 months (IT startup)

I have recently decided to appear for CAT 2013 and enrolled in CL regular course.
Please let me know what are my best chances to enter IIMs. Thanks a lot.
Sanjay, despite a poor B.Tech CGPA, you have a good chance in all IIMs due to your work experience. Also IIMA has announced a change in criteria which would make you eligible for it. With a 5 year experience, you should also take GMAT from the point of view of ISB Hyderabad and other top MBA institutes outside India.
sir i have enrolled yesterday for smart cat cracker but havent got access to it in my sis .Please help me out .Thanks..in advance..

CAT 2011- 92
I got 95 percentile in CAT 2012 and converted IMT Gaziabad
Could you please tell me which B schools should i target apart from IIMs, FMS,SPJain and XLRI with this experience and acads. As also i was so confused about joining IMT Gaziabad this time and decided not to.
Should i consider IIFT and SIBM or should i consider GMAT and MBA from outside?
Also please suggest how can i improve my score further
thanks in advance….
Sunny, you should consider the top 20 MBA institutes. SIBM and NMIMS can be your back up options. IIFT should be a part of your main list. Leaving IMT G is not an issue and you should not consider it this year. Given that you will have 4 years work experience by mid 2014, it will be advisable for you to take GMAT and explore ISB Hyderabad and other top MBA institutes outside India.
sir i had a query i am a 2009 batch btech passout…i joined software firm in feb 2010 and worked till may 2010 . Even if i dont show my software experience in my bio data during b school interviews will that account to a year gap because i joined next in july 2010 – to presently in a( core company). I heard there is an issue during placement time in b schools with 3 + yrs experience because at present my exp is 36 months already .I am in a fix what should i do should i leave job ? i mean if i join next year in a b school even while joining a b school i may be questioned about 3 + experience in interviews or so in future . So i am concerned if i join next year till what time my exp will count for placements/joining interviews in b schools.
Sagar, you are creating an issue where none exists. Students with 4 years work experience are not uncommon in goo B schools and most of the B schools have lateral placement opportunities for students with experience. Show full experience and get the benefit of work experience. A drop year is difficult to justify.
My fundamentals are ok….its not that i dont understand when a quesn is solved or i see a solution…its just that i need to brush up basics in between..m ok with discipline required for preparation part i dont stray…but i guess…the methods …… taught by the best faculty of cl will stand in good stead for me…i.e through smart cat cracker/ mba on demand prog.. is nt it… i doubt i will get the same in a classroom prog in bhubaneswar…what is your opinion sir..In case you think i should join a classroom prog, which one it should be..please guide…and thanks for the previous response..
Sagar, this is a personal choice but if your fundamentals are in place then SCC + Test Gym + STC is good enough for preparation.
hello sir,
I am an civil engineering student and totally confused wether to do mba or m tech as my score is
10th – 52%
Diploma-70%
BE-61%
Category- NT-b
Is there any chance to get call from IIMs L or C
what should be my score of CAt or (SNAP) to get the calls from b-school
Is mba benificial for my future
plz giude me sir
thank you….
Chetan, MBA or M Tech should be decided on the basis of your interests. If you are inclined towards technical areas then it should be MTech but if you do not want a career in Engineering or technical areas then MBA will be able to provide you with good options.
All IIMs except IIM A & B and other top MBA institutes are possible for you if you get a good score in CAT and other entrance tests. However I am not clear about the category you belong to. Except for Maharashtra CAP (for MBA) that has multiple categories, the categories in practically all other MBA entrances are General, SC, ST, NC-OBC and PWD. Please confirm which of these you belong to for me to give you an idea of the score required.
GP Sir,
I have 92.3% in 10th and 88% in 12th. Also I have got 86.4 in Grad and 25 months of experience now. What should be the percentile that I need to aim for in CAT?
I wrote CAT 2010 with 93.4 percentile, but couldnt get a call that time from any of the IIMs
Gopi, if you are from General Category then you would need around 98.5%ile to get a call from the old IIMs, a NC-OBC candidate will need around 95%ile.
GP Sir,
I had 97.2 percentile last cat (NC-OBC). Could’nt convert C or L. Hence m repeating this year. My academics are as follows:
Xth – 82% (ICSE)
XIIth-89%(CBSE)
CGPA _ 7.8/10 (NIT Calicut)
Work Ex as on Aug 5th – 25 months
Do I stand a chance for IIM-A or B as well this time?. Last time i think i missed A call very narrowly. What about B?.
Aftab, as a NC-OBC candidate with over 25 month work experience, you should be able to get a call from all the IIMs including IIM A and B if you can repeat your last year performance. The extra work experience will be the difference this time.
Hello Sir!!
I have 85 % in 10th & 90 % in 12th . However, I have only 59 % in graduation but 12 months work-ex in Deloitte. I have started preparing for MBA exams a month back. What are the chances to get in a good college if I score good?
Also, please guide me regarding the kind of question paper pattern for CMAT and NMAT.
Thank you!!
Nishi, your graduation marks means that IIM A is out and IIM B is difficult but all the other IIMs and other top B schools are possible. Will be writing a an article on NMAT and CMAT soon.
Sir,
What are my chances for IIM A,B & C ?
Xth- 86.4%
XIIth- 79.6%
Graduation- 79.6%
Work Ex- 13 months
Category- NC-OBC
Thank You.
Sakshi, while IIM A is ruled out due to less than 80% in XII and graduation all the other IIMs and top B schools are possible.
A NC-OBC candidate with decent academic record, 13 month work experience and marks for gender diversity you can get calls from some of the top IIMs at a score of 95%ile with 90%ile in each section.
hi sir, My academics are
10th : 62% UP BOARD
12th:77% UP BOARD
B.Tech : 80%
Work experience on August,2013(At time of filling CAT form) : 2 years
If I get a very good percentile score in CAT’13,from which IIM’s I may get a GDPI call ?
Shilpa, With less than 80% in X and XII IIM A is ruled out for General Category and OBC candidates. Your work experience will be helpful in getting calls from all the other IIMs if you a good CAT score. Your target CAT score should be around 98.5%ile to ensure calls from the top IIMs and FMS.
Also sir i stay in bhubaneswar …i wonder if the faculty are good enough…of cl…i wanted to attend SQC session please do it in bhubaneswar or provide some video ..link to cl students of conducted sessions. Also i found in your posts u said..wondering about…concepts/fundas so much is nt important…whats imp is to solve variety of quesns…is it sir?….For eg in case of polynomials i should worry so much how an internal angle = (2n-4)*90 / n is derived but rather how many types of quesns can be asked on it…??..
Sagar, the faculty are good in Bhubaneshwar and will be able to help you in your preparation. Your focus should be on application of concepts and not not derivation of formulas. SQC is scheduled for Bhubaneshwar and the date will be announced shortly.
SIR i was wondering which one to go for among smart test cracker online, mba on demand or any short term classroom course of cl…..as i doubt how wil i get my personal doubts cleared in an online forum like smart test cracker , mba on demand. Also wanted to know what is this beta version of prep ?.
how should i improve in quants.
In the two-three cl mocks my accuracy has been abt 65-70% bt my attempts are around 10-11.
How should I improve on this??
If you can please suggest sum book/source…
3)please suggest some web site/blog to read articles of the type being asked in RC.
I do not have problems in reading editorials of THE HINDU as they are based on current affairs,…(also i wanted to know what aspects i should focus on while reading rather than merely reading… hindu etc)… but the RC passages asked on psychology/arts/culture/literature etc pull my score down.
5)which particular topics to study to get grammar questions right??
Sagar, your specific requirements will determine which program you should go for. If you need regular faculty guidance then a class room program is the best option. Also the classroom program ensure a structure and discipline which is essential for clearing papers like CAT. If you can study on your own and have basics (fundamentals) in place then the combination of Smart CAT Cracker + Smart Test Cracker + Test Gym will take care of all aspects of preparation.

Sir, i would like to know if this information is true or not. Also if i do get a very high percentile will i be eligible for all the top b-schools(other than IIM A/B ofcourse) ?
Hoping for your reply at the soonest.
Deep, yes IIM a abd B are not possible for you but IIM C and L, other IIMs and other top B schools would not be a problem. Of you are a general category candidate then you should target 99%ile in CAT.

Thanks & Regards,

Suyash, IIMA needs more than 80% in X, XII and Graduation from a general category candidate but all the other IIMs, XLRI and FMS are not a problem. CA and CS are considered professional courses and most IIMs will give some extra marks for it.

Deepika, except for IIM A and B you have a good chance of a call from other IIMs and other top MBA institutes. You should target a score of over 98.5%ile in CAT and SNAP, 97%ile in XAT and around 215 in NMAT.

my profile is

can you tell me what calls i can get and what are the chances of getting them converted
Divya, You can get calls from all IIMs and other top B schools except IIM A. For a female-OBC candidate with 15 months of work experience a score of 95%ile in CAT is safe for calls from the top IIMs. For the new IIMs 92-93% should be sufficient. Do ensure that you have a at least 85%ile in each section. Converting the calls is a separate process and should not be a problem.

Pratibha, 86-93%ile can be improved essentially by practice and revision. After every Mock CAT or section test that you take (or have taken) please identify the important questions and revise them regularly. You should start the process by going through the past Mock CATs and the other MCQs that you have taken so far.
Based on your XII and graduation scores IIM A and B not possible but you can get calls from other IIMs and other top B schools.

Thanks & Regards,

Amit, IIM A is ruled out since you have less than 80% in X and XII but due to your work experience a call from the other 6 older IIMs (including B and C) is possible at a CAT score of over 98.5%ile
Thank you so much for that prompt response Sir!!!
I would like to state that your are doing a great job and although having a busy schedule you still find time to reply to all the individual queries on blogs and that deserves a great deal of appreciation . Radhika, you have very good marks in X and XII and would definitely get a call from all IIMs (despite a not so good grad score) in case you can get a score of 90%ile in CAT with a minimum of 80%ile in each section. The score required would be lower than what I have given above but you should target a minimum of these.

Arnab, With an average academic track record, no work experience and a general category candidate, you will need around 99%ile in CAT for IIMs & FMS and 98%ile for other institutes. In SNAP you should target 98%ile for SIBM & SCMHRD and in XAT you should target 97%ile for XLRI/XIMB.

Ashu, all IIMs and FMS are possible except IIM A for which you will need to pull up your B.Tech CGPA to 8+
Thank you for the reply Sir.
On account of the above, what should be my strategy for the coming 3 months? I shall be giving CAT for the first time this November and just started my prep by joining CL last month.
Ashu, focus on practice and revision. Practice by taking section and Mock tests regularly, analyse each paper/test, identify important questions and revisetehm regularly. Please go through the blogpost “Things you must-do after every mock you take” at https://www.gpkafunda.com/?p=205 to understand the process.

Shipra, As a NC-OBC girl candidate with over 80% in X and XII you have a chance of call from all IIMs if you get a score of 95%ile in CAT with a minimum of 90%ile in each section.
thank you so much sir ..
and for fms ????
thank you sir for the silver lining !! i am motivated to work harder…
thanku sir
SIR, MY ACADEMICS ARE

2nd year rslt due, presently in 3rd year doing Economic’S hnrs.
What is the ideal score for XAT, CAT , IIFT, SNAP ,MAT ,NMAT ?
1ST YEAR : 74%
Vandana, A general category, female, non-engineer should target a 98.5%ile in CAT for IIMs and other top institutes thru CAT. IIM A is will be possible only if you can score more than 80% in graduation. The target score for other tests is: XAT 97.5%ile for XLRI & XIMB, CMAT and SNAP 98%ile for SIBM & SCMHRD and IIFT 52 marks.
sir,
i am planning to appear for CAT 2013.my marks are as follows
10th-92.8%
12th-80.2%
b.tech-72.9%(i am currently in my final year)
i belong to OBC-NC category .what percentile will assure a call from IIM A,B,C,L?
Payal, an NC OBC candidate with over 80% in two out of X, XII and Graduation, can get calls from all IIMs (including A, B, C and L) at a score of around 95%ile. Being a girl you will also have the advantage of extra marks on account of gender diversity.
Hello sir
wanted to ask that currently I am practicing from CL material n taking test gym from the sis account…sir should i follow some other books also or CL material will be enough…please do reply sir…
Akriti, The CL material is sufficient. Please ensure that you do all the MCQs in the fundabooks also.
sir i have secured
class X : 78% (CBSE)
classXII : 83% (CBSE)
B.COM GRADUATION (C.U.) : 59%
CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT (INTER CLEARED)
WHAT IS THE IDEAL SCORE IN CAT,IIFT,XAT,NMAT,SNAP FOR GETTING CALLS FROM THE RESPECTIVE B-SCHOOLS.
THANK YOU !
Charanpreet, As a general category candidate with no experience and less than 80%in X, XII and Graduation IIM A and B are not possible for you. You should target a score of 99%ile in CAT for IIMs and 97%ilr for other top institutes. Your target score for other exams is: – NMAT 215, SNAP 98%ile and CMAT 97%ile.
THNK U SIR…
BY JUNE 2014 I will have a work experience of 8monthe in a CA FIRM.with work experience as above what will be the ideal score for all MBA exams.
sir is GRE a good option when we compare it with CAT or other indian mgmt. entrance exams???
Thanks for replying sir….
Hi Sir,
My profile is as follows,
10th – 89.6%
12th – 81.5%
Grad (btech) – 6.96
Work ex : 24 months (as of today)
CAT’13 would be my first attempt.
What is the percentile score i should aim for IIMs ?
I am also interested for SP jain and FMS .
What are my chances ? Pl guide.
Priya, your B.Tech CGPA is a dampener which means that IIM A is ruled out but your marks in X, XII along with work experience gives you a good chance in IIM B and C. The other IIMs and other top MBA institutes are not a problem.
The target score for IIMs and MDI is around 98%ile and for FMS it is 99%ile.
Hi Sir,
I did my B.Tech from NIT,Nagpur in 2006. I always had a leaning towards management, but civil services was my first priority. Cleared prelims thrice (in both the patterns) and made it to the interview in 2012. Alas! I lost it out by a whisker. Look forward to pursuing an MBA from one of the top colleges. Is it possible? How much will the gap after graduation matter (decisively)? Btw, I had 92% in X, 94% in XII, 7.13/10 CPI in B.Tech and have around 4.5 years of work experience after graduation. Please elicit your valued opinion, especially regarding my chances of still making it to one of the IIMs.
Thanks.
Baba, With a good academic record and over 4 years work experience you can get admitted to the IIMs and other top B-schools. However IIM A will have to be ruled out since you have less than 80% in graduation. The time spent in preparation for Civils will not be a problem.
Given your experience, in addition to IIMs/XL/FMS etc you should consider the option of 1 year MBA from ISB Hyderabad or top institutes outside India.
Hello Sir,
Im a working canditate & from may onwards im preparing sincerely for CAT’13,but yesterday i wrote my Prock 4 & ended up with just 23marks, which has led to massive decline in my confidence & pschyologically im down,I was in a utopia that im working hard & im in right track till yesterday, sir please suggest me should i continue with my CAT prep??
Also im listing my acad marks :
Xth :82%
Xiith : 57.4%
Graduation : 71%
Work Ex: 13 months
& i have temporarily left my job & preparing for CAT’13(last attempt) because its a dream to be in top 10 B school, the reason which motivated me to study for CAT are my past failures & also without much prep i scored a 85%le but this year aftr 2 months of prep im struggling, which is leading me to a state of acceptance that Im a looser, and aftr writing my test i hv enrolled for the express batch CL-is it worth??please sir help me with some valuable solution & stratergies to adopt? and i would like to know that with my acads which B schools I can make & how much percentile i need to score for that?
Harsh, Consider Proc Mock 4 a wake up call and review your preparation. If without preparation you scored 85%ile and after preparation your score is reducing drastically then possibly you are spending too much time in theory/concepts and less than required in practice and revision. Suggest you focus on solving MCQs, mark the important questions and revise them on a weekly basis.
To start with work on the MCQs in the class exercise sheet and the MCQ Exercises in the fundabooks. Every time you take a test – Section or Mock, analyse it in detail and also identify questions for revision.
Hello Sir,
Foremost I on the behalf of student community very sincerely like to say that how lucky we are to have a mentor and coach like you. Your concern for each one of us is really remarkable.
Now to my query :
My profile in brief:
10th : ssc : 82.4 – 2003
12th : HSC : 64.8 (sci) – 2005.
Nothing looked interesting after 12th , so started working Technical BPO . Worked for 5 years and complete My graduation during the last 3 years of working ( not correspondence but evening college)
Graduation : 70.8 (Bcom- Mgmnt, Mumbai University ) 2011
cat 12: 84.2 Percentile
After Graduation , I launched my own startup , which is still continues with moderate success in Ecommerce Segment .
I know this is completely unconventional profile and I have some disadvantages cuz of not completing my education in a patterned way
From your experience , do such profiles have any advantages as well , because the amount of learning I have had in diverse work backgrounds like A BPO and a Start Up is way beyond I could have had anywhere else.
Which IIMs or TOP B schools I stand a chance and may have consideration for such a profile. Like any aspirant , I aim for IIM A, B , C , but based on your prev reply I gather that A is ruled. Out..
Keenly awaiting your response.
Kindly advise…
Hello Sir / Team,
I’m keenly awaiting your response…..
Done.
Akash, the fact that you have an unconventional profile is an advantage. An unconventional profile is more likely to be successful in the Interviews. You varied work experience along with an own business is a big positive. A good score in CAT can get you calls from all IIMS and MBA institutes but IIM A and B are not possible because of less than 80% in XII and Graduation.
Along with CAT you should also consider GMAT for 1 year MBA from ISB Hyderabad and top institutes outside India.
Thanks a ton for your response sir. It helps . However will not be giving GMAT as , it think it will scatter the focus , there are already 4 that I am giving.
Thanks Again.
Sir,
Marks in :-
10th- 79.2%
12th-61%
BBA- 74%
I have got very poor marks in 2012 cat-26.90, 2013 Xat-17.33, 2013Cmat feb- 107, Cmat Sep- 84. I want to go in Xiss Ranchi for Hrm. How should I prepare please suggest some way out.
Nikhlesh, A score of 27%ile in CAT is very low and suggests that either you did not put in effort during preparation or this kind of papers are beyond you. Since you have a low score across all papers I am inclined to suggest that you look at options outside MBA. However if you are keen to give MBA entrances another shot then join a classroom program since you are likely to need faculty support. For XISS Ranchi you will need to take XAT, which is a difficult paper. My suggestion will be to focus on CMAT and SNAP which are easier to handle.
Hello Sir,
My Acads : Xth-82%(CBSE)
Xth-57.4%(CBSE)
Graduation (B.Tech) : 71%
Work Expereince : 13 months as on august.
I have taken leave from ma office & from next week im going to prepare only 4 CAT’13 & hv enrolled CL classes, will it be possible for a student like me to score a 99%le since i want to pursue ma MBA in top 20 B schools & if yes what should my stratergy, also I wrote Prock 3 which was my 1st Mock & ended up with a 60%le, so please suggest some solution how can i improve myself & will it be possible in next 4 months?
Harsh, it is possible to get a high score in CAT only if you are disciplined and focused in your preparation. Please ensure that you attend your classes regularly. A day before the class you should study the topic, get your doubts, if any, clarified in the class and revise the topic at home the same day. Please attempt all the MCQs given at the end of each book/chapter. Take all Mocks as per the suggested schedule and analyse each paper. DO highlight/bookmark the important MCQs and revise them once a week.
hello sir
my acads are as follows
10th-78%
12th-77%
graduation-78.3%
what is the decent percentile i should aim for this year for getting into one of the top b schools like mdi, iift, imt….
sir please do reply…
Rajlaxmi, you have a decent academic record and to get admitted to a good B school you should target at least 98%ile if you are from general category. Most of the institutes outside IIM A and B do not have a very high weightage for academics. With less than 80% in X, XII and graduation IIM A is ruled out and IIM B could be difficult but all other IIMs and other MBA institutes are all possible.
Sir,
which course(MBA/PGDM) and which college should one apply to
through NMAT???
I am currently in 7th semester..am I eligible for taking the exam??
Really confused abou all this..pls elaborate.
Vishwaas, you are eligible for NMAT. With respect to NMAT 2014 my suggestion is:
A. Go for MBA (Full Time) & PGDM
B. MBA full time preference – if interested in HR then 1.MBA 2.MBA (HR) 3.Banking else go for 1.MBA 2.MBA Banking 3.MBA Capital Markets.
C. PGDM Preference – 1.Bangalore 2.Hyderabad.
D. Campus preference – 1.Mumbai 2.Bangalore 3.Hyderabad.
Sir, will you be taking any webinar in kolkata?
please do reply sir..
Rajlaxmi, I will be coming to Kolkata for a session next month.
Hello sir,
My Acads are as follows
Class X-86%
Class XII-71%
B.Tech -83% from NIT PATNA
WRK X-38 months @ NTPC
I belong to NC-OBC category.
What are my chances for IIM A,B,C and
What should be my target percentile to get calls from these three in case I am eligible.
Thank You.
Rahul, As a NC-OBC candidate with over 80% in two out of X, XII & graduation and 3.5 year work experience you can get a call from all IIMs at a score of 92-93%ile. A score of 95%ile is a very safe score.
Sir,
10th-92%
12th-78%
Cgpa- 6.2(upto 6th sem)
I am a sc candidate. What are mine chances of getting iim a,b or c?
Sachin, An SC student with more than 80% in at least one out of X, XII and graduation can get a call from IIM A and B. IIM C will be the easiest for you since it does not consider graduation marks (your weak link) for shortlisting. A CAT score of 80%ile in each section and 90%ile overall should be enough to get you a call from all the IIMs.
Your X and XII marks suggest that you have possibly not put in the right amount of effort in college. Suggest that you pull up your socks for the remaining semesters and look at improving your CGPA to at least a 7.0 as it will be helpful in the interviews.
Hi Sir,
My academics are :-
10th – 81.25
12th- 67.5
Grad – 89.5
Work ex : 2 years(in Oct ’13)
What are my chances of getting a call from the top B – Schools profile wise provided I get a decent %ile score?
What %ile should I ideally be aiming for?
Utsav, If you are a general category student then IIM A is out since you have less than 80%in XII. IIM B should be possible because your work experience will be able to cover up for you not so good XII marks. All other IIMs and top B schools should not be a problem. You should aim at a minimum of 98.5%ile to ensure calls from the top IIMs. For FMS the target is 99%ile.
Hi Sir,
My academics are :-
10th – 91.2
12th- 89.2
Grad – 76.2
Passed out college in 2012. Currently working with Adobe Systems(one year). CAT 2012- 88%ile.
What is the decent percentile I should aim for this year, to get into one of the top IIMs?
Sakshi, while IIM A is ruled out due to less than 80% in graduation (for general category candidate) all the other IIMs and top B schools are possible.
For a call from the other IIMs with decent academic record, work experience of about 20 months and marks for gender diversity you can get calls from some of the top IIMs at a score of 96%ile but your target score for CAT should be at least 98%ile. If you belong to any of the reserved categories then you can get calls at significantly lower scores.
Thanks a lot sir.
Yeah, I belong to General Category..98+ would only help I guess..
Please continue conducting webinars for quants. 🙂 And also, if we can have some sessions like this for VA too..
The webinars are on a hold for a coupe of weeks and will be restarted for QA as well as VA
Sir, my acads are as follows:
10th:96.2%
12th:94.5%
b.tech:8.17(cgpa)
I’ll be joining verizon on the 15th of this month.
What could the minimum percentile in CAT’13 that would fetch me calls from iim a,b,c ?
Inu, if you are a general category candidate you should target a score of at least 98%ile in CAT for the top IIMs.
Sir, my academics performance is:
10th – CBSE- 91.2%
12th – CBSE- 78%
B.Tech – GGSPIU- 76% – uptil 6th sem
I will be appearing for CAT this year. Keeping in mind my academics am I eligible for top IIMs if I score good in CAT??
Ankit, IIM A is ruled out, IIM B is difficult but all other IIMs and top B schools are not a problem.
Sir , i got 91% in 10th and 92% in 12th. I scored 70% in graduation (economics honours) . As on 1st August 2013 i have no work experience. What is the minimum percentile i need to secure calls from IIMs?
p.s. getting 80+% in economics honours (du) is a bit unrealistic ,do IIMs consider this fact?
Komal, IIM A does not consider the fact that different Boards, Universities and Courses have different marking standards so your graduation marks (General Category) make you ineligible for IIM A but you have a good chance in all other IIMs and other top B schools if you score over 98%ile in CAT.
Hello sir,
could you please suggest me how many questions do i need to attempt separately in both sections of CAT in order to achieve 95+%tile ?
and also what accuracy is required?
thank you.
Ruby, typically around 15-17 correct answers in each section will get you a sectional score of 95%ile. However this can change depending upon the degree of difficulty of the section.
thnx for the above article.it was really useful and informative.i was waiting for CAT dates to release as i am currently doing preparation of CAT 2013.i am currently preparing for CAT 2013 and simultaneously doing a part time job. and at the same time i do feel the need to join some coaching for CAT 2013 to stay in touch with studies and keep my concepts sharp. one of my friend have advised me to join @ http://www.wiziq.com/course/9277-lr-vr-di-ds-speed-calculations-quant-general-awareness . i am not sure that will it be useful.is it worth to join online courses???? have any one tried them before,?? then kindly advice me ,,,
Rashi, this was responded earlier and hence copying the same for your reference.
Rashi, while I have heard that Ravi Handa is a good faculty I do not know him personally nor am I in a position to comment on the quality of his online program, the one mentioned by you. Do check out the reviews and then take a call.
Is this your first attempt at CAT? Please let me know your background and level of preparation so that I can suggest alternatives. If you are targeting CAT’13 then a test series is a must.
sir i have 85% in xth 72% in xiith grad bsc 52% last cat %ile 80. ihave taken a drop sir i want to know upto what %ile in cat could get me in to good colleges like nirma, welingkar, irma?
Nupur, 92-93%ile is usually sufficient for a call from Nirma and Welingkar but you should aim for at least 95%ile.
thank you sir. i am a lil worried coz of my grad %age would like to know that can it be a hindrance for me to get into good colleges? B- should i start on some certificate programmes to veil my grad marks? with certificate programmes i mean six months programme in taxation or import export management, will they have any sort of advantages to me?
Hello GP sir,
well I had posted this query earlier ..but maybe the post was old so it went unnoticed.
1) how should i improve in quants.
In the two mocks my accuracy has been abt 70% bt my attempts are few.
How should I improve on this??
If you can please suggest sum book..I have heard about Arun Sharma but have not purchased it as I am not too sure
2) given that I have a very tight schedule how should I go about the G.A section.
3)please suggest some web site/blog to read articles of the type being asked in RC.
I do not have problems in reading editorials of THE HINDU as they are based on current affairs but the RC passages asked on psychology/arts/culture/literature etc pull my score down.
4)any link of 2008-2012 CAT papers???
5)which particular topics to study to get grammar questions right??
Do reply at the earliest sir..I seem to be reaching a dead end.
Hello Sir,

Currently working with a start-up in the field of HR and Organizational transformation.
Aiming at only the following colleges, what should be me immediate course of action, and the safe zone of percentiles for the upcoming competition exams :
1. IIM L, C
2. FMS
3. SPJIMR (Please help me withthe GMAT score, that is safe for it)
4. XLRI
5. ISB Hyderabad.
6.IIM Indore, Shillong

VA/LR:94.7
>CAT’12 was my first attempt.
Sir, Please provide me a overall action plan that i should follow, keeping in mind that the above stated colleges are the only ones, that i have on my list.
Also please provide me information about admission in ISB, and how to approach SPJIMR via GMAT (safe score).
P.S. – Converted IMT-G, KJ Somaiya this year.
Waiting for your reply to the soonest.
Dear Mudit,
There’s nothing like a safe score for getting into the top B-Schools. Looking at your overall profile and aspirations, I would say that the least that you need to get to have a chance to get an interview call from these colleges (and a realistic chance of converting too) would be:
CAT – 99
XAT – 97-98
GMAT – 740-750
Please understand that the scores mentioned are only indicative, and you should try and get as much as possible in the tests. The things will obviously get better for you in the second stage with higher scores. Moreover, please bear in mind that the sectional break-up would also be very important while you chase these percentiles.
SPJIMR (both for calls and final admissions) puts heavy weights on students’ profiles. So one might get a call at 88 percentile, and might not at 99.50. But since profile is something that cannot be changed at this point of time, don’t worry too much about it.
ISB accepts GMAT scores and generally has 2 admission cycles. Please go though its website for details about dates and process.
Would advise you to focus just on one thing at the moment – getting the maximum possible score in CAT/XAT/GMAT. Forget everything else. Results would take care of themselves.
Apologise for the delay in responding to your query.
All the best!
GP
Sir,
My academics are as follows:

12th-88.8

Presently i am trying for bank po but i am interested in doing mba from IIM-A OR IIM-B.
AFTER 2 YEARS OF WORK EXPERIENCE DO I HAVE ANY CHANCE OF ENTERING THESE TWO B-SCHOOLS , I GAVE CAT IN 2012 BUT MANAGED TO GET ONLY 50 PERCENTILE
AFTER MY SCORE I AM TOTALLY DEMOTIVATED
PLEASE HELP ME
Kartik, a score of 50%ile indicates either lack of effort or the fact that this kind of papers are beyond you. If it is the later then forget about CAT but if it is the former then with your good academic record and a good CAT score you can get admitted to IIM A, B and other top MBA institutes. Along with CAT you should take CMAT, SNAP, NMAT and XAT also.
Sir,
I have scored following marks:
10th—86.6% year 2004
12th—62.83% year 2006
after 12th i have a gap of 1 year accounted to medical entrance repeat
i completed my graduation in 2010
Bsc Chemistry Kolhapur—-60.6%
i intend to appear for CAT 2013 …so now total 4 years gap I have made unsuccessful attempts in 2011 2012,
Sir please guide as to which colleges would call if i get a good score this time..and what score would be expected for which college…Please reply
Apratim, the first thing that you need to do is to pick up a job. It will be extremely difficult for you to justify a 4 year gap after graduation in the interviews. My suggestion is pick up a job, work for a couple of year and then go for an MBA.
In case you are unable or do not want to get a job then go for MMS programs in Maharashtra through CMAT sinde the weightage for GD/Interview is very low. Most of the other good instutes have high weightage for the personality assessment process and will be difficult for you.
Sir i have 10th 66.6%
12th 63%
B.E : 72%
will be joining a IT firm in July
Is there any chances to get any IIMs,
or it will be better if i get some work experience too,
hoping for a reply sir.
sir

B.tech 83%
Approximately what should my percentile be to get one of the top 15 B schools?
Madhurima, A general category female candidate with good academic background (over 80% in X, XII & Grad) and no work experience should target around 98%ile in CAT for a call from the top 15 MBA institutes.
Sir, my acads are as follows:
10th (Maharashtra board): 86%
12th (Maharashtra board): 81%
BE (Pune Uni): 63%
Kindly plz let me know that do I have chances of getting calls from old IIMs? I heard that all the IIMs require 80+ in graduation too. But its very tough to maintain the aggregate of 4 years above 80 in Pune Uni.
What should be my target in CAT?
Parth, IIM A is ruled out for you and IIM B is difficult but all the other IIMs and other MBA institutes are not a problem. A general category candidate with no experience should target a score of above 98%ile for IIMs.
thnx for the article. it seems quite helpful, but i have already enrolled in a different online course.however Guys do consider the online coaching option too as they provide the same material and tips and tricks and u can start the online session accc. to your convienence plus it’s available at a much lower price than the offline coaching.i am a working professional and i am simultaneously preparing for CAT-2013. so not possible for me to join any coaching institute.even i can’t join the weekend batch ,as the institute traveling will take around 1 hr.so rather than joining any institute ,i prefer to have an online course for Coaching for CAT.practicing with test’s regularly could easily double your efficiency.but i do believe that in today’s scenario for Proper preparation and development of concepts one must join some CAT test series or any coaching institute.i have also joined @http://www.wiziq.com/course/9277-lr-vr-di-ds-speed-calculations-quant-general-awareness for online coaching for CAT and i have to admit it is really helpful.A must for every CAT aspirant.

Hello sir,
I have joined CL allahabad.
I am a final year male student of B.tech.
Class X-92%
Class XII-90%
B.Tech (as of now)-78% from Uttar Pradesh Technical University.
I belong to NC-OBC category.
I just want to know that without any work experience and being from a not so good college.do I have any realistic chance of making it to IIM A,B,C??
And what percentile would be safe??
Thank You.
Vishwaas, as a NC OBC you can get call from IIM if you have over 80% in at least two out of X, XII and graduation so you have a good chance. If you can push your graduation score to over 80% it will improve your chance significantly. For an interview call from the IIMs you should target a score of 95%ile.
Hi sir ,
Below is my score in my academics. Will I be able to get calls from all the iim’s and other top b-schools like fms, spjain if I have a good cat percentile.
10th – 77.9%
12th – 88.4%
graduation – 64%
category – NC-OBC
Kumar, while IIM A abd B are unlikely, all other IIMs and other top B schools are possible for you. As a NC OBC candidate you should target a minimum of 95%ile in CAT.
Hi sir,
Thank you for your reply to my query. I want to pursue an mba specializing in Sales and Marketing. Can you please suggest the iim’s and other top B-schools which are doing well in Sales and Marketing to which i can apply for my academic profile.

All the best!
hi Sir,
class 10 : 63.85 %
class 12 : 72.85 %

GENERAL candidate
this is the 2nd time im taking CAT. do i stand a fair chance to get calls from IIMC, FMS, IIFT, MDI gurgaon ?? was a cl student fr cat 12. now ive enrolled for test series. looking forward to your reply Sir . Thankyou
Abhishek, you have a chance of admission to all institutes except IIM A and B if you can get a CAT score of 99%ile. Hope you have picked up a job and are working + preparing simultaneously. Work experience will give some extra marks and will be helpful in the interview also.
No Sir, i am not working anywhere right now . will that be considered a negative to the interview panel? my results will be declared in the month of july, so i am thinking of enrolling in M.com at Calcutta university after that ..will that be of a benefit Sir at the interviews? Looking forward to your reply Sir . Thank you
Hi Sir,
I just stumbled across your blog and it looks really helpful. I will be taking Cat’13, my acads is as follows:
10th- 93.6 CBSE
12th- 88.4 CBSE (commerce)
Grad- 71.1 (Business Economics)
Work ex- 2 years as of now.
Previous Cat %ile: 88.xx and 86.80
How do I go about studying and preparing for CAT to get above 98%ile. I really want to make it this time. Also, is it practical to expect iim-a,b calls with this profile and a better %ile?
Thank you,
Simran
I’m from the general category*
Simaran, IIM A is ruled out since you have less than 80% in graduation, IIM B however is still possible because it has a process of normalising scores across different boards and Universities. Your excellent academic record, 2 years work experience can get you calls at a score of 98%ile. Some of the IIMs have extra marks for non-engineers (academic diversity) and girls (gender diversity) and for these IIMs you can get calls at 95%ile also.
HI Sir,
I have 78% in 10th, 57% in 12th and 69% in Engineering and 30 months of work experience till now.Considering the low academic score(especially in 12th) do I stand a chance to get calls from IIMs and other top B schools (I know IIM A and B are out of the context, but from other IIMs).Also what percentile range I should be aiming to be in safer side?
Thanks:
Sibaprasad, your work experience can help you cover up for the low academic scores so while IIM A and B are ruled out you can get calls from the other IIMs. A safe score for calls from the IIMs with your academic track record for a general category candidate is 99%ile.
Sir I have scored
80.8% in 10th
75.6 in 12th
7.01 CGPA in engineering .
General category
What are my chances of getting into top 6 IIMs ?
Thanks
Kshitij, IIM A is ruled out for you since are a general category candidate with less than 80%in graduation but all the other IIMs care possible for you.
Hello Sir,
I am a 2008 passout and am working since July 2009. My Marks are as follows
10th = 82%
12th = 82%
B.Tech = 63%
Work experience: 4 years+
Going by my academics, is it possible for me to get a call from all IIMs if i manage to score a high percentile in CAT 2013?
I’ve already joined the AIMCAT series by Career launcher.
Ravi, all MBA institutes except IIM A are possible for you.
Dear Sir, I wish to join CL Smart Test cracker for CAT 13. But the problem is I don’t have CL in my city. I am from Nasik. I this case, can I take proc mocks at home? Will I get %ile, rank and the analysis as the students giving test from class get?
Sir??
Sajid, you will get all the %ile and analysis like any other student who takes the test at the CL center.
Hi Gp Sir,
I am sanjana and i am a NIFT (Textile design ) student .
my acads are as follows :
X- 84.3 %
XII (science ) – 86.2%
graduation – CGPA – 9.05/10
i gave CAT last year but as i did not get enough time for preparation , so screwed the attempt completely. this time i have started my preparations sincerely. i want to know what are my chances of getting into Prestigious IIM’s ?
also sir, please tell me what should be my strategy as i have started giving mocks and my score in them lie between 40%-50%) really worried !! :
regards,
sanjana
Sanjana, you have 3 distinct advantages over most of the candidates for MBA:
1. Academics: with very good marks in X, XII and Graduation which are given decent weightage by most of the IIMs, especially the top ones you have a head start over most of the MBA aspirants.
2. Fashion Graduate: Since you are not an engineer some of the IIMs will give marks on account of academic diversity.
3. Gender: Again some of the IIMs give marks to female MBA aspirants on account of gender diversity.
Obviously the above will be helpful only if you get a minimum of 97%ile in CAT. With respect to you preparation hope you have brushed up your fundamentals of QA, DI and English. Marks in mocks and actual paper are a function of decent knowledge and most importantly the ability to apply the knowledge to the right questions. So if your question selection is not upto the mark then you will not be able to get a good score. Please go through the following posts on this blog for more details:
1. Are you choosing the right questions in your Mock CATs? http://www.gpkafunda.com/?p=192
2. Things you must-do after every mock you take https://www.gpkafunda.com/?p=205
sir,
so does that mean , if i meet the required percentile score in CAT , And seeing my acads i can manage a call from IIM A & B ???
Yes, very good chances of a call from IIM A and B.
Thank you so much sir for your help !
Hii Sir,
Currently I have 1.5 yrs experience in IT sector as a developer.
My academics are
10th : 87.2
12th : 89.6
BTech IT : 78.02
What should be the target score for CAT-13, for getting a call from
1) IIM A,B
2) Other IIMs
3) Top colleges like FMS
4) A good college like SP Jain
And to enhance my profile what should I do? Should I ask for managerial or work related to project operations from my supervisor? Or should I join banking sector? As I don’t think coding would be taken as positive point for MBA aspirant. Guide me Sir.
Kamal, If you are a general category candidate then IIM A is ruled out but since IIM B normalises scores across boards so you are not ruled out. The desired score for the top IIMs will be in excess of 98%ile for a general category candidate with your experience. For the reserved categories the scores will be significantly lower.
For FMS 99%ile is a safe score and for SP Jain you will need a minimum of 97%ile.
my academics:
class X:96.25%
class xii:90.2%
C.G.P.A.:8.75
category:Gen
sir i m 4th yr student and dont have work experience.what is d minimum %ile required for iim s and what are my chances?
Saptarshee, You have a great academics record and can get calls from all the IIMs at 98-99%ile if you belong to general category and at significantly lower percentiles if you belong to the reserved categories.
Sir, I completed all the demos and filled in the survey form also. But I am not able to login into the site now? Have our id’s been suspended after the demo sessions?
Hope it has been resolved.
hello sir,
i am preparing for CAT this year for the second time. Last year result was not satisfactory. My academics are
Secondary – 78%
Senior Secondary – 76%
Graduation (Humanities) – 60%
Category – NC-OBC
What are my chances of getting call from IIM’s ?
Ruby, With less than 80% in X, XII and graduation IIM A is ruled out but since IIM B normalises the scores across different boards, you have a chance. There should not be any problem wrt other IIMs. As a NC OBC you should target an overall score of 95%ile with 90%ile in each section to be sure of calls from the top institutes.
Thank you so much Sir for your guidance.
Regards,
Ruby.
Sir,
i am an average student.my 10th-64.8%, 12th-59.8%, %age upto 6th sem-65 %.I am an SC student..do i have a chance to get into IIM-A,C,L,K..??? Plz reply
Thanks a lot Sir.
Roop, since you belong to SC category you have a chance of calls from all the IIMs despite your not so good marks in school & college. As a SC candidate you should target a minimum of 90%ile in CAT with a minimum of 85%ile in each section to be sure of getting calls.
Thank you for the above imformation. this is really helpful. however i need some help over an issue. i am preparing for CAT 2013 and simultaneously doing a part time job.i feel the need to join some sort of coaching for CAT. but because of the job schedule i can’t join any coaching institute. i have found this online coaching link http://www.wiziq.com/course/9277-lr-vr-di-ds-speed-calculations-quant-general-awareness ,during my search. so are these online coaching classes really useful??? if anyone has a better alternative than above mentioned ,then kindly guide me
Rashi, while I have heard that Ravi Handa is a good faculty I do not know him personally nor am I in a position to comment on the quality of his online program, the one mentioned by you. Do check out the reviews and then take a call.
Is this your first attempt at CAT? Please let me know your background and level of preparation so that I can suggest alternatives. If you are targeting CAT’13 then a test series is a must.
hi sir, My academics are
10th : 84%
12th:75%
B.Tech : 74%
Work experience on August,2013(At time of filling CAT form) : 8 months
ir..what are the chances for SP Jain & FMS ?
& what is the minimum percentile to get a call from FMS ?
Thanks a lot sir
SPJain and FMS give very little weight (if any) to past academics so it is essentially your CAT score and performance in personality assessment process that will determine your chances of admission.
This year FMS gave calls at a minimum CAT scores of 98.6%ile.
Hello GP Sir,
The methodology is very effective. I have completed all the demo courses But there was link to give feedback. Thanks for creating such an awesome course.
Thanks and Regards
Shirsendu
Sorry, I meant no link for feedback was there
Shirsendu, The link for feedback will be sent shortly.
Hello Sir,
I am a 2013 passout and am joining TCS in July. I had attended CAT 2012 and secured 93.47 percentile. My Marks are as follows
10th = 88.8%
12th = 69.75%
B.Tech = 6.2 CGPA
My ambition is to become a Management Consultant. What should be my plan of action as of now so as to achieve it?
Please help
Kiran, Your preparation in this attempt should focus on two broad themes: practice + revision and mock test + analysis. Use your last year’s material for practice + revision and join test series for mock test + analysis.
Xth 87.2
XII th 86
grad 85
2nd attempt for CAT
going by my acads, is it possible for me to get a call from A,B,I?
Abhas, Calls from A, B and I are possible since you have more than 80% in X, XII and graduation, also your work experience will give your extra marks.
thanks you so much sir..
Gp sir …i have
10th — 94 %
12th –97.2 %
Engineering — 86 %
cat 12 – 89%le
and i have recently joined in capgemini. I would love to be a part of it but i’m not shortlisted. Is there anything that i can do??
Sainadh, shortlisting was done based on certain criteria and you did not make it to the list. Do not worry, once the testing is over, the program will be available to you and others as well.
sir, xth: 65.4, 12th: 71.4, btech, chemical: 65.5. having 4 years gap after 12th and 18 months work ex.. what are my chances of getting into IIMs. please suggest.
Surya, it is difficult but not ruled out.
Sir, Xth : 91.2%, XIIth : 93.41&, B.tech : 71%, experience : 48 months , category : OBC-NC, how much should i score to get call from IIM A,B,C? thanks in advance….
Srinivasan, 95%ile is very safe but you can get calls at around 92%ile also. The sectional scores should be above 85%ile.
Hi, I missed the deadline for filling the survey. Is there anyway I can sign up now?
Sneha, it may not be possible, but drop in a mail to smartcracker@careerlauncher.com
when can we expect the email.
hi sir, My academics are
10th : 84%
12th:75%
B.Tech : 74%
Work experience on August,2013(At time of filling CAT form) : 8 months
If I get a very good percentile score in CAT’13,from which IIM’s I may get a GDPI call ?
Amit, you can get calls from all IIMs except IIM A and B.
Sir..what are the chances for SP Jain & FMS ?
& what is the minimum percentile to get a call from FMS ?
Thanks a lot sir 🙂
This year the FMS cut-off was 98.6%ile for general category candidates and for SP Jain it was 95%ile. However SP Jain looks at your profile also for interview calls. For FMS only CAT percentile is considered.
sir i got
10th=86%
12th=81%
grad=70%
CAT2012=87%
just wanted to ask that is there any chances for me to get calls from IIM A,B,C,L in CAT 2013 if i bring very good percentile this year???
IIM A and B are ruled out if you are a general category candidate but the others are on.
very nice initiative. would love to be a part of it.
