  1. Dear Mr. Sreenivasan & Gautam Puri Sir,

Any tips for students who gave the CAT last year? I scored lower than what I expected in Section II and now I have started to second guess myself in the Mocks. As a result of this, I unnecessarily end up spending more time on questions.

I have always been really good in English and been an avid reader. I scored well in Section II in all the mocks last year as well as this year. How should I maximise my score in Sec. II? Should I spend more time on it as compared to Sec. I?

Lastly, my Maths is not that great (You guessed it – I’m not an engineer). I am putting in a lot of effort but rarely make the cut-off.

Apologies for the long comment – I didn’t know any other way to contact you. Given your hectic schedules, I completely understand if you wouldn’t have the time to respond to this.

    Regards,
    Vikram

    • Dear Vikram,

Take as many mocks on the new CAT pattern as possible. This year’s CAT may not be comparable to last year’s CAT. Be confident of the answers that you choose. Analyse your mock tests thoroughly. If you have a decent accuracy level (at least around 80%) then you need not be under-confident of the answers that you mark. It would be best for you to allocate equal amounts of time to either section. You have yourself stated that Maths is not your strong area. In that case, giving less time to Section I may hurt your score in that section and may make it difficult for you to clear the cutoff in that section.

  2. Hi Sir, I am a CL student and earlier I saw previous year papers on the E-Lib link of our SIS accounts. But with the new format of E-Lib they are not available. Keeping in mind that we must analyse the papers from 2004-08 can they be made available to us?

    Thanks.

    • Dear Raman,

These papers are being provided to you as Sectional Tests. A mail in this regard was sent to all students through their SIS.

  3. sir,
    i m btech 2013 passout n i don’t have any work exp…
I want to know dat sir … Dis 2 year gap will become problem in selection process of iim ? May i write cat 2014 or skip it ? i belong to sc category … please help

    • Dear Mani,

This two-year gap need not necessarily be an insurmountable barrier to your selection. Skipping CAT ’14 does not make a lot of sense since it would only add to your gap years.

      • sir,
then is dat realy possible to get selection in iim with two year gap…? N i want to also know that on which percentile i can get a call from all iims..?

        • Mani, as a SC candidate a sectional score of 85%ile and an overall score of 90%ile can get you calls from all IIMs and FMS.

  4. Sir,
I am a CL, CP student.
Sir, it has been so long that you have not taken any workshop at any of the CL centres. Your workshops have helped a lot and I want to gain more and do well in other topics too. Please tell me that when will be your next workshop with us. The last workshop which you took was of Ratios and Proportions.
    Thank you

    • Brijesh, I have been travelling an hence could not continue the sessions. I will re-start the workshops in 2nd week of September. Hope you are attending the SQC session on 28th August.

      • Thanks a lot sir.
Yes sir, i am definitely attending the SQC session. There is no point that i can miss any of your workshops/sessions.

  5. Sir,I have been constantly following this blog and a question which pops up in my mind again and again is as to “what is analysis?”…what should be the purpose while analyzing our mock exam???

  6. Hi Gejo
I have taken a few CL New Pattern Mocks till now with an average score of around 142 (QADI 74, VALR 68) . I am aiming for 99.5+%ile in CAT. I devote almost 95mins to QA (solve 80% QA and 3 out of 4 DIs) and 75mins to VA (solve 90% VA, 3 out of 4 LR and 1 out of 4 RCs). I needed some advice if I’m on the right track to achieving my aim, or do I need to tweak my strategies a bit. Accuracy is definitely a concern for me with I attempting around 75 Qs total and almost always getting 20 incorrect. I tried decreasing my attempts but that led to slight improvement in accuracy but a net depreciation in my net score. Is it ok to sacrifice a net score for accuracy? I know it hurts my percentile since in CL Mocks we get percentiles for net scores and not accuracy, which wasn’t the case in CAT 2013. (Quick question: Is there any way CL can incorporate taking accuracy into consideration while releasing percentiles?) Any comments/advice would be appreciated!

    • Dear Shashwat,

In CL mocks, your net score is calculated with 3 marks for every correct answer and -1 for every wrong answer. This is exactly in line with the details given by the IIMs. In case there is any change in the marking scheme for CAT ’14, we will also incorporate that in CL mocks. You should focus on solving more practice problems. This should help improve your accuracy.

  7. hello sir,
    i have
    10th : 89%
    12th: 85%
    b.tech. : 70% till third year
i am gud at quant & very bad at english,
i never attempt RC ques, i used to get 65-70%ile in mocks.
how should i prep for remaining two & half months to maximise my score in CAT14.
How much i need to get call from diff IIM & IIT.

    • Rajan, the focus of next 2.5 months should be on practice, testing, analysis and revision. Practice using Test Gym, Testing via the Test Series, Analysing each paper to identify the problem areas and the important questions and finally weekly revision of important questions.
Regarding RC, my suggestion is that you should read the editorial pages of a couple of e-newspapers daily to improve in this area. In the test attempt 1-2 RC passages from the area that you are comfortable with.

  8. Hello Sir !

What is the maximum marks for MAT?
Is negative marking included in the marking pattern for MAT?

    Thank you !

    • Dear Aditya,

The maximum score possible in MAT is 800. For each wrong answer, MAT has a penalty of one-fourth mark.

  9. Hello Sir,

I am not able to perform good in both the sections simultaneously in the last 2 mocks I’ve given. I managed a Overall Score of 102(QADI-71 & VALR-31) in the New ProcMock-1. Accuracy was very poor though: 66 Attempts and 42 Correct.
In another mock i managed 106(QADI-38 & VALR-68) , accuracy was a bit better in this one, but still my sectional scores have been varying a lot. My time distribution is approximately 90 minutes to QADI and 80 minutes to VALR.
Please suggest what should I do to get good sectional scores in both sections.
    Thanks.

    • Here are my thoughts:

      1. You must improve accuracy – this is something that you need to work on an urgent basis. Figure out the kind of mistakes that you are making:
      – Is it a conceptual mistake?
      – Is it a silly error?
      – Is it because you are not reading the question properly.
      – Is it because you are taking unnecessary risks?

Getting your accuracy to 80% will give you an improvement of 30+ marks.

      2. Personally, I feel 80 minutes for section 2 is a bit on the lower side. Trying to cramp us RC & LR which requires time in 80 minutes would be difficult – unless of course you are good in those areas.
My suggestion is to reverse it – 80 to section 1 and 90 to section 2. This would mean that you will have to do your quants a tad bit quicker.

Do remember, strategies should be based on your assessment of your strengths or weakness.

      Regards
      Gejo

  10. Hi,

Could you also provide a link to download the whole ppt, it will be easier for us as we wont have to download the videos again and again and go through the whole thing

  11. Sir I have two queries:
    1) I enrolled for Cat Freedom test series will percentile predictor be made available to me?
    2) When will IIFT Compendium be made available?

    • Dear Ankit,

Yes, CL Percentile Predictor will be available to you. IIFT compendium will be available to you by mid-September.

      • Dear sir
still iift gk compendium has not been uploaded and could you please provide completed mocks in pdf format without solutions. it helps in revising and analysing mocks.
        regards

  12. Sir,
I AM A CL STUDENT. I WANT TO TAKE TRANSFER FROM CL DHANBAD TO CL KOLKATA CENTER TEMPORARILY.SO,TEMPORARY TRANSFER BELONGS TO HOW MANY MONTHS.

  13. Hello sir,

Just saw your video. An excellent analysis of past paper.
    I have 2 questions.

    1) The number of questions suggested by to attempt is 12 to 15 out of 35. Which is less than 50% of total QA question. In others sections (such as LR & DI) you suggesting to more than 60% of questions. Why this uneven attempts in QA?

    2) Is giving 20 mocks would be enough to formulate the strategy before actual cat-14, I thought of giving mock everyday for last 15 days before appearing for cat-14?

    • Hi Vikash,

      1. It was just a suggestion. The logic being – if you do more of DI (which is not based on knowledge), it reduces pressure on Quant – given the fact that there is one cut-off for the section. However, you must always decide these things based on your strengths and weakness.

      2. 20 tests is more than sufficient. You must not do too much experimentation. Stick to simple logic – look at the tests as chunks – DI, LR, RC, VA, Quant. Figure out a strategy to handle each of these chunk. Also note that taking test everyday will also mean you will not get enough time to analyze them.

      Regards
      Gejo

  14. sir very helpful no doubt but plz provide us with unprocks in our sis so that we can implement your strategies practically..
