NMAT 2017: To Retake or Not To Retake – Updated

With NMAT declaring the scores of Window 1 & 2 the obvious question in the minds of the NMAT takers are:

  1. Should I go for a retake?
  2. Which institute/program can I get an interview call from?

Obviously the answer to these questions is in trying to predict the cutoff that NMIMS would have for its various programs. So let us first have a look at the NMAT cutoffs of the last few papers.

NMAT 2016 refers to the NMAT conducted during Oct-Dec 2015 for admission to 2016-18 batch

What about NMAT 2017?
This NMAT 2017 cut off will obviously be impacted by the paper structure, difficulty level, the number of seats in each program, the number of applicants and also the seats to interview calls ratio. The structure of NMAT 2017 has not changed and the overall difficulty level of NMAT has also remained the same despite marginal changes in difficulty level across sections. Hence I would assume that the cut offs this year will not be very different from last year but due to slightly easier

Level 1: If all your scores correspond to this level then you are likely to get interview calls from all programs that accept NMAT scores hence you should focus on the other MBA entrance tests and start your PDP classes immediately after CAT.

Level 2: If any of your sectional scores or overall score are in this level then you cannot be certain of getting a call from NMIMS Mumbai MBA/HR programs and hence should consider a retake. You will however get calls from all other NMAT institutes/programs.

Level 3: With sectional and/or overall scores in this level, most probably you will not be shortlisted by NMIMS Mumbai for MBA/HR programs and XIMB HR is also not confirmed. So if you are targeting NMIMS Mumbai or XIMB HR then you should go for a retake. However, if you are satisfied with NMIMS Bangalore or Hyderabad then a retake is not required. For a retake you should be confident of increasing sectional/overall scores corresponding to at least Level 2.

Level 4: In this scenario a retake is definitely required, however, before deciding on the retake, please evaluate your total & sectional scores critically to decide if you will be able to reach Level 3. If you think Level 3 scores are out of reach then do not go for a retake and instead focus on SNAP and other MBA entrances.

Level 5: Howsoever cruel it might sound, if your scores are in this level, I feel compelled to say that a retake may not be useful because the gap which you need to cover is huge and it is unlikely that you will be able to increase your sectional and the overall scores in the next 2-4 weeks. You would be better off focusing on other MBA entrances. The only reason to go for a retake would be if you messed up your test strategy and are confident that it will not be repeated.

Remember that this is just a guideline and you have to take your individual calls based on your ability to increase your scores, expected performance in IIFT/CAT/SNAP/XAT. Give it a careful thought before deciding either way.

    • Utkarsh, no need for a retake. Start with your PI/GD/WAT practice and also work on your confidence, read newspaper and focus on personality development activities.

  14. Sir, I got 202 (79 QA, 58 VA, 65 LR) in NMAT 2017. I’m thinking whether to retake the exam or not. As you can see, my sectional cutoffs are cleared for this attempt. My question is that if I retake the exam and score above 202 but then somehow loose on any one of the sectional cutoffs, will I get the call from NM Bangalore on the basis of the initial (202) score or not?

    • Ananya, NMIMS Mumbai will not happen at your score. XIMB-HRM is a decent option. Pardon the delay. I hope you got some good calls this year.

    I am a CL student and I have scored an overall 203 in my first attempt of NMAT and I have my retake on 5th of December.
    CAT being in the previous day, I would not get much of a time to practice for the NMAT, I feel. So, would this retake help in any way?

    • Abhishek, this is good because you will be fully prepared due to CAT. Get your test strategy right and you will easily get a 210+.
      XIMB HR cutoff is likely to be in the 200-205 range.

    • Ankit, unfortunately NMIMS gives interview calls on the basis of NMAT score only and does not consider the profile. However some of the IIMs, SP Jain and TAPMI consider the profile and she will have a better chance there. From NM perspective she should go for a retake.

  54. Sir. I scored only 172 in NMAT in my first attempt. As per the answer key, I get only around 40 marks in IIFT. I left my job 6 months back. I finished all the NMAT questions in the official guide for NMAT but the questions I faced on Nov 8th were far tougher (especially quant and logical reasoning). The main hindrance I found in this exam is time. What do I do? I am not writing SNAP. Will be giving CAT and XAT. Scored 87%ile last year in CAT. I am unsure if I can make it to a top B school in India. Moreover, I had given GMAT a couple of months back and scored 650.

    • Pranay, I think you will get a call despite a 64 in LR. The paper this is is similar to last year and hence I do not expect a significant increase (if any) in LR cutoff.

Last time when i saw the results QA cut off was 70 and overall cutoff was 200 for bangalore and hyderabad campus but on many websites they are showing lower cut offs.     • Ankush, I don’t think that the cutoffs were reduced because a few of my students at 198 also got calls from Hyderabad and Bangalore.

      • Thank you sir for the reply. I scored 175 in my original NMAT attempt (QS=67, LS=54 and LR=54). However the Retake 1 that I took went much better and I am expecting at least 195+. But at the same time I feel even though the LR section in my initial exam did not went well however the LS section went very well as the questions were very ‘familiar’ (courtesy: Internet forums!) Sir what might have caused such low score in the LS section?

    • Anubhab, final conversion can happen at 217 and 220+ does not give any special advantage. Final conversion is primarily a function of the interview & GD performance. However you can consider a retake if you can increase your score to 230+

        • Vibhav, NMIMS will go by the highest overall score so by skipping the test you will get a “0” and your first attempt score will be considered.

          • Ayush, if in retake you get more than 214 but do not clear the sectional cutoff then you will not be shortlisted by NMIMS Mumbai. NMIMS considers the highest overall score and the sectional scores associated with it.
            No show means 0 score so you earlier score will hold.

    • Hem,your overall score is low and you should go for a retake. For NM Mumbai target 210 and for Bangalore/Hyderabad target 200. You can easily increase your score in LR and LS by 5-6 marks each.

    • Karan, you should get a call from NM Mumbai, please start your PDP classes immediately after CAT. Your LS score is not a problem.

    i am new to this. So please excuse my lack of knowledge. I have 2 questions:

    1. I registered for NMIMS alongwith the registration for NMAT. By my 1st shot at the exam was today (which I believe is called Window-2). Since my first attempt was today, I am assuming that I don’t need to register again or anything on those lines?

    2. Does NMIMS consider the latest score or the best score? I am asking this as I am waiting for the result to be declared, which should be around 4 weeks, I would like to still register for another slot towards the end of the whole NMAT testing window, so I can at least secure an exam center of my choice. In the eventuality that the score is good, I will then not have to worry about the 2nd NMAT exam, and can keep on preparing for XAT.

    • Ad, your sectional scores are fine but at 208 you are on the edge and should go for a retake if you want to be sure of interview call from NM Mumbai.

    • Sukriti, Look at revising the Medium level questions in your Mocks 2-3 times and hopefully this problem will get resolved.

    • Sadia, your QA score is on the edge, you can get a call from NM Mumbai but if you want to be sure you should go for a retake.

    • Salil, go for a retake while your sectional scores are fine at an overall score of 208 you might miss the NM Mumbai call by a couple of marks. You can increase your QA and LR scores by 6 marks each.

    • Bhavna, if you are looking forward for CAT as well, then you should schedule NMAT attempt in the month of October so that you have enough time to study for CAT. If not, you can take NMAT in November.

    • murali, your grades will not be an issue. GDPI for NMAT will start anytime in the last week of Jan till the third week of Feb. The best preparation would be self introspection to be in line with your thoughts and aspirations. You could consider going for the PDP program.

    • Ashutosh, NM Mumbai call will happen at this score. NM Mumbai is a good college and is absolutely worth considering. If you’re an engineer then NITIE call will happen at that score.

    • Gourab, 206 is borderline for NM Mumbai, however NM Bangalore will certainly happen. The probability of converting the call depends on your PI performance and your good acads will also play a part.

        • Lakshay, all the centers maintain the same CL quality as the faculties taking these sessions are mostly the same. In case of doubt, you must do what you think is the best.

    • Vijul, I don’t think that you need a retake, you should be able to clear all the sectional and overall cutoffs. You can convert the call but it will be a function of your interview performance.

    • Richa, NM Bang call is certain. You should forget about your CAT attempts of the past and should look forward to make the most of SNAP and XAT. Revise and practice from the Test Gym. Take mocks.

    • Umang, 209 could be borderline. You could go for a reatke to make your chances more bright. Also, aim for XLRI through XAT.

    • Harsh, ideally you should fill up XAT (last date 10th Dec) and should be looking at XLRI, XIMB and SP Jain from there.

    • EKta, NM Mumbai cutoff last year was 208 and it will remain somewhere close to 208-210 this time as well. Try to capitalize on the second retake itself. Taking a third retake is not advisable.

    Should I go for a retake to better my QA scores? Problem is that I am not sure I will be able to score more even in the retake, as I do not know if this is my actual score in QA or marks that I gained through flukes (since there was no negative marking). So I am not sure I can fare better in my retake as my quant skills are weak. I also don’t want to end up taking on too many exams needlessly in Dec since I will also have SNAP and XAT to focus on. Do I still have a chance to get a call from NMIMS Mumbai?

    • Amy, to the best of my knowledge last year the NM Mumbai QA cutoff was 65 so you have a chance. This year NM has introduced a 30% reservation for girls so you have a chance at 68. Hence if you are sure of improving your QA score then ignore NMAT retake and focus on SNAP and XAT.
      SNAP has a easier QA you should be able to do well in the paper.
      XAT has difficult QA but if you can solve 10 question in 1 hour then you are through, also XAT is about 60% language and 40% QA which will be an advantage for you.

    • Deepak, I think you can increase your score in a retake but will need to spend time with a faculty to understand the areas where you are lacking and the way to increase your score.

    • Sreyansh, I do not think that there will be any significant gain in a retake unless you can increase your score to a 240. Start your PDP classes immediately and let us try to maximise the interview score.

      I had given one of my final year paper for review but however, I could not qualify in the paper.
      I have the back paper due on April now. Will my application be considered in GD/PI if I qualify for the entrance?
      I have no work experience to back things up.

    • Saral, while you will clear the sectional cutoffs but at 207 you are likley to be just around the cutoff and hence it is advisable to go for a retake. You should look at increasing your score in LS and LR.
      In case of multiple attempts, NM goes for the highest overall score.

    • Rishav, NM Mumbai interview call should happen, go for a retake only if you can increase your score to around 225. In case of multiple attempts NM goes for the one with the highest overall score.

    • Tanvi, call from NM Blr and Hyd will happen but NM Mumbai is unlikely. You can go for a retake with a target score of at least 210.

    • Bharat, while you might clear the sectional cutoffs, it will be touch and go when it comes to the overall cutoff.
      The overall cutoff is expected to be in the 208-210 range

    • Jay, I think you can apply because, to the best of my knowledge, Bangalore and Hyderabad are not off-campus centres of NM Mumbai but separate institutes offering AICTE approved PGDM.

    • Ramansh, last year the QS sectional cutoff was 65 but it was a difficult paper and this year the cutoff is expected to go up. At 70 marks you are on the border and we can just hope for the best.

      I keep reading your blog time and again as it serves as a very big inspiration to me. I had certain queries and it would be always desirable to learn more from you as I have already begun to consider you as my mentor and guide.
      I have scored 76% in class 10 and 80% in class 12, the board being the Indian Council for Secondary Education.
      In graduation I have been able to manage 53.69%, the University of Calcutta (2015).
      I am giving all the entrance exams this year (MAT/NMAT/IIFT/SNAP/CAT/XAT/CMAT) in chronological order of which I have secured 90.17 percentile in September MAT and am awaiting results for NMAT which I had given in November 10, 2015.
      I have no work experience.
      Sir, my queries are as follows:-
      1) I am planning to apply for IMS Ghaziabad, XIME Bangalore and ISB&M Pune as a back up option on the basis of my MAT score. Is it a correct decision? (A reattempt to improve my MAT score in December is also in the cards)
      2) My preparation in CAT and other related entrance examinations is lacking behind mainly because of maths as I am weak in the subject. However, I am able to capitalise in Verbal, LR and DI. How can I improve my maths score as practice and mocks are not helping me much?
      3) I have shortlisted 5 colleges on the basis of my confidence and this year’s preparation,

      • Kshitij, my answers are given below:
        1. Possibly XIME Blr is the best option among the three institutes you have mentioned.
        2. We hardly have any time left to improve QA but you can look at doing the Begin-er and Advanced level questions from Test Gym Lite of the topics that you are somewhat comfortable with, also do not forget to revise.
        3. Among these colleges KJ Somaiyya and TAPMI are the best and XISS Ranchi should be considered only for HR.
        4. Most of the non-IIMs go only by the overall score and do not have sectional cutoffs hence apply based on your predicted CAt percnetile. For the colleges to apply, check out the following posts:

    • Kushal, NMIMS Bangalore is a decent institute. Our suggestion is that if you have an NMAT score which will surely take you to NM Bangalore, you can consider taking a reattempt.

    I have been taking nmat for last three years. In 2013 i got 214, in 2014 i got 207 and this year i have got 219 (QA-85;LS-62;LR-72). For the previous two years i had received the call from nm mumbai but was not able to convert it and i dont want to go for the other two campus . So i would request you to suggest me what should be my take. My class X score is – 84.86 and for XII is – 82.57 and graduation in bba the score of which is – 63.73. I have also showed work experience of 20 months in family business which is after graduation in the year 2014. I have also completed intermediate chartered accountancy.

    • Gaurav, while 207 last year was a borderline case your 2013 score of 214 was a good one. With two unsuccessful interviews the issue could be the way you have handled the interviews, suggest that after CAT you write down the entire interviews (both years) to understand where you went wrong.
      This year with a good profile (acads + work ex) and a 219 this year you have a good chance of converting the call.

    • Prakhar, the exact weight of NMAT score in the overall selection is not known however my estimate is around 35% with the the balance for the Interview process and work experience. At this score you will get a call but will probably need a very good interview to convert.
      My suggestion is to go for a retake only if you are confident of increasing your score to at least 225. Your LR and LS scores are very good and hence most of your increase will have to be in QS.

    • Abhishek, very good NMAT score start preparing for the next stage immediately after CAT.
      NMIMS has not declared the weights for various components in the selection process but I think that NMAT scores would have a weight of 35%.
      With your score of 232 you have a good chance of making it to the final list with a decent interview, candidates with scores close to the cutoff would need a very good interview to make the cut.

    How much weightage is given to the NMAT score in final round of seection ?
    What are my chances of converting a seat at NM Mum Core ?

    • Ritesh, it is a decent college. I would rank the NM colleges in this sequence: NM Mumbai, NM Bangalore and NM Hyderabad.

    I have applied for a retake as well.
    I have 95% in my class X exams.
    And 93% in class XII exams.
    No work experience.
    I am currently pursuing MSc in biotechnology and i dont want to drop a year.considering i get a call from nmims bangalore is it worth joining it? Or should i drop a year and aim at CAT the next year?

    • Sagnik, NM Bangalore is a decent back up option but if you are looking at a top 40 college then it will not fit the bill. Given your excellent academic record and the fact that you are pursuing MSc I am inclined to suggest a retake however the decision of retake should be taken in January after all the tests are over.
      Regarding NMAT, your LR score is on the lower side and if you can increase it to around 70 then NM Mumbai call will happen. Your QS score could also easily go up by 5-6 marks.

    lr=65
    i am concerned about my LR score because its very near expected cut off.So is it advisable to appear for retake
    Secondly till last year we had re-register for nmat only, when appearing for retake as opposed to this year where we have to apply for both nmims and nmat when appearing for retake..
    does this change will have any implications of only the best score being accepted.

    • Shivam, you will most probably get a NM Mumbai call because the LR cutoff in the last 3-4 years has been less than or equal to 65.
      I think that NM will still go by the highest score in case of retake(s).

  181. Sir I gave a mock NMAT on CL’s website and got the following scores –

    QA -93
    LR – 75
    LS – 45
    total – 213

    Is this a good score, given the shortcoming in LS?
    Also I need help in para – jumbles and LS at large as well, what should I do?

    • Akshit, your overall score is not an issue but LS is a problem. You will need at least 55 to be sure of clearing the cutoff. The only thing that you can do at present is to practice the LS section with an extra focus on parajumbles and vocabulary.

  182. Respected Sir , I have a score of 210 in my first attempt of Nmat( QA-79, LR-71, Lang- 60). I have already registerd for 2nd attempt on 23rd of november. I have following queries:-

    1) Does the score matter just for the sake of getting a call or has it any impact on one’s final conversion probability??

    2) Have the exam slots for December got filled or they’re not open yet ?

    3) Given the Reaonable chance of getting a call how should I start preparing for now on itself for the next stage?

    OA-214
    Should i expect a call from Mumbai?
    Also,I have had a retake last week.If I get a score less than 214 OR greater than 214 but not clearing sectional cutoffs,then which score will be considered?1st one or the retake?
    Please resolve my query sir.

    • Sankhadeep, as mentioned in response to your other query, you should be getting a NMIMS Mumbai call.
      In case of multiple attempts, NMAT goes for the highest score.

    • Sankhadeep, I think you are safe, in the last four years the highest NM Mumbai QA cutoff has been 74 marks in NMAT 2012 hence you should be getting a Mumbai call.

    • Sagnik, NM Bangalore is a good back up option and should not be rejected. A score of over 190 can get you calls from Bangalore and Hyderabad.

          • Rishabh, Hyderabad and Bangalore will need a score of around 200 and hence you should go for a retake. They will consider consider the highest overall score.
