  2. Hi GP Sir,
Every time I have a question I really bank on you for answers Sir!! Thanks a lot for your patience. Can you please let me know the scholarships that one can avail to do MBA? My academic background is 10/12/UG-BE 88/91/8.7 . I am going to join IIFT, Delhi. I am lone bread winner of my family. It will really be helpful if you let me know various sholarships that I can avail. Expecting your replies Sir!!

  3. Sir ,
Could you please tell me how to get my own organization registered.I own an organisation but it is not registered anywhere till now.

      • Nitya, it can be a “Proprietorship Firm”, please connect with any CA to help you with the process. You will need to fianlise a name, letter head and open a current account.

  4. Sir, i am preparing for CAT 2016.After giving my first mock of CL test series on analysing myself i found that i was having difficulty in reading and comprehending the passages given in the VA&LR section.I was reading the passage twice and thrice and then answering the questions thus wasting a lot of time.
Sir, as i have to give cat in 2016 do i still have time to improve in this area?
and i would like you to suggest me some guidelines and text books to improve and excel in this area as i m determined to do anything for this.
Sir, i would also like you to comment over my profile.
    xth-(93)
    xii-(85)
    btech-8/10(till nw)
am i eligble for all iims?

    • Shobhit, you have sufficient time to improve in all areas if you are willing to spend about 3 hours daily on weekdays and 6-8 hours on holidays.
It is possible that in the Mock you were reading faster than what you are used to which led to lack of understanding and hence multiple reading of the passage. In the paper you should read at a speed that you are comfortable with to ensure a good comprehension. To improve in RC you should read a newspaper regularly, preferably Indian Express or The Hindu, the focus should be on the editorial, business and international pages. Since CAT is a computer based test you should preferably read the e-paper and not the physical newspaper. Also practice 2-3 RC passages everyday from test gym.
Your profile is good for all IIMs.

  5. Sir ,I started my own organisation in 2013 right after I passed out.I do not fall into the Income Tax payee category because the organization is non profit type.could you please tell me that if I mention this as experience in CAT 2015,which documents will be required at the time of interview/admission to validate my work?

    • Nitya, yes this s valid work experience. Hope the organisation is registered as some kind of document would be required to prove its existence. Please call me at 9811155160 to discuss.

  6. Sir my profile is as follows:
At present i am working in a public sector bank (22 months)
    Xth – 80.40 (2001)
    XIIth – 68.80 (2004)
    B.Tech – 8.35/10 (2010)
    M.Tech – 7.86/10 (2013)
So you can see the lot of year drops also. Please, tell me what %ile will be good enough to get call from new iims and iits or any other good tier 1 colleges.

    • Abhishek, you will need:
over 99.6%ile for IIM A, C and FMS.
over 99%ile for most of the other old IIMs, MDI and IIT Mumbai
over 97.5%ile new IIMs, most of the other IITs
A score of 95%ile will be sufficient for most of the other colleges.

      • Sir, thanks for the reply. One more thing i want to know is that my experience of psb is relevant or not and what will be the impact of so many drop years at the time of placements.

        • Abhishek, your PSB experience will be counted and will get the same weight as that of private sector companies. Drop years are not important and placement will primarily be a function of your performance in MBA.

  7. Hello Sir !!
My past acads are as follows:
    X: 87.00
    XII :81.5
    Graduation :61.62 % in Engineering.
I graduated in 2013 and since then have been working in my own organisation that works for environment and sustainable development.
I gave CAT this year for the first time and got 92.98 percentile.
I am planning a retake in 2015.Are my past acads going to be a hindrance IIMs?? Besides,is the work that I have been doing be counted as valid work experience? Please reply ASAP.

    • Nitya, your work will be counted as a valid work experience.
Your marks in X and XII are fine but graduation with 61.62% can be a problem in IIMB but most probably your work experience will be able to compensate for it. All other IIMs and other institutes would not be a problem.

  8. sir,
i am in btech final year and appeared for cat without coaching or preparation. i got 89.5 %ile this year and have converted Tapmi, NIT Trichy and FMS Bhu. Should i drop 1 year and again give cat or join some college and give cat alongwith that? please help

  9. Sir I got 90.4 pc in tenth and then 71.2 in twelfth. I m finishing my b.tech civ eng in may this year and my cgpa is approx 7.5 now. I am attempting for b school exams for the first time this year. I have taken coaching before though. Are any b schools out for me because of my dip in performance ? Am I starting the preparation too late for top 10 institutes ?

    • ad, IIMB will be difficult due to your XII and graduation marks. Most of the other IIMs and other MBA institutes should not be a problem.

  10. Hi GP,

Gave CAT got a lousy 87.5…Feeling dejected. I want to go for the next year CAT.

Just wanted to clarify a few things:
    1. Is there gonna be any significant change in CAT pattern as it is IIMA that will be conducting it.
    2. What test series should I join apart from CL.
    3. I suffer from a mental anxiety whenever giving a test and this leads me to commit silly mistakes take more time also to read questions repeatedly, which happened during the CAT as well. How to go about solving this.

    • Shayantu, which section (or subsection QA, DI, LR, VA, RC) pulled you down? work on that area before doing any thing else. Coming to your specific questions:
      1. I do not expect any significant change in CAT’15 but expect slightly more difficult QA and RC.
      2. With a horribly difficult test series from TIME last year it would be prudent to consider IMS test series along with that of CL.
      3. You are possibly attaching a greater amount of importance to CAT and other MBA entrances that what they deserve. You will need to learn to relax during the papers.

  11. Hi sir,
I scored a 75 percentile on cat 14 with almost no serious preparation. I’m in my final year of btech. I want to give the gmat but I would be able to apply only after a couple of years of experience. Do you think that studying for cat 2015 with remaining amount of time would be better or to give the gmat instead. I want to wrap up my mba as soon as possible.
    Profile is X-89
    XII-84
    BTECH – 72

    • Saru, go for CAT’15. Since you have already taken CAT once you will be able to prepare well in the next 7-8 months. You can take GMAT around March’16 in case you do not do well in CAT. Since you did not really prepare last time do go for a structured preparation this time and hence you should consider joining a classroom or an online program for preparation.

  12. Sir with due respect to everyone and no intention to offence anyone i would like to ask you whether top notch mba institute give any prefference to students who are from IITs/NITs against
    their counterparts..
also i will seek your comment on my profile till now
    10th-93.8%
    12-87.6%
    btech-7/10(till 6th sem)
    i’m from NIT rourkela

  13. Sir
I have final call from NIRMA,LBS,FORE,IMT-N. Sir Can you please arrange them for me.
I’m more confused in LBS and Fore as they are pretty much at same level. How is the industry perspective to both institutes?
    Thanks

      • Ashish, look at a retake only if you are sure of increasing your CAT score to at least 94%ile (preferably over 97%ile) to ensure calls from the next level of institutes.
If you are from Delhi (or North India) then go for FORE/LBS. Both are similar but FORE could provide better placements in marketing. It will be useful for you to visit the two institutes, get a first hand account from the existing students on placements and then decide.

        • Sir
I have converted IMI too, but now way too much confused between fore and IMI. Since IMI would cost me somewhere about 18 lakhs completely.
          What do you suggest?
          Thanks

          • Ashish, IMI is a level above your other options (including FORE) and despite the higher cost is should be preferred over the others.

  14. Hi Sir,
I have final convert from NMIMS Bangalore and call from KJ Somaiya through CMAT feb(99.57 percentile). Please suggest which should i choose incase i convert KJ Somaiya?I have 1.5 years experience in IT.Btech-80% 10th-85% 12th-86%

    • Kanika, KJ Somaiyya should be preferred over NMIMS Bangalore. Hopefully you will get KJ Somaiyya MMS also through CET and if that happens it should be preferred over PGDM.

  15. Hello sir! I want to go for hospitality and management. And i have to choose between sihs pune and iihmr jaipur which i have finally converted. Which one should i go for?

  16. Good-evening sir,i am a b.tech-computer engineer, got 91 percentile in cat and 92 in xat ,sir I wanted to get into investment-banking so MBA in finance is my priority and I got calls from IMT-gaziabad , great-lakes , kJ soumiya , Liba and GIM-goa?so which college among these should be my priority in persuing mba-finance,i mean where does maximum “investment bank” comes among dese colleges? thanks and regards

    • Ikshit, these institutes do not really attract investment banks. They will however be able to get you good options in finance from where you could move into investment backs. IMTG, KJ Somaiyya and GIM Goa should be preffered over the other two.

  17. Hello sir, I m a bds graduate, wanted to get into hospital management, got calls from Iihmr-jaipur, Sihs-Pune, Gim-goa hcm,Tapmi -hcm, Nmims -pharmaceutical management? Which would be d best college for me among these

    • Drishasaxena, NMIMS Pharma is likely to be the best among these.
However, if possible, my suggestion is to go for a retake and try for a general MBA program. A sectoral MBA program typically has lower placement opportunities and hence lower salaries.

      • Thanku sir for ur prompt reply , sir I am not interested in pursuing general management & m more interested in working in hospital in HR or operations divisions. So sir kindly guide me the college I should opt for taking into account my career interest. And sir does Nmims-“pharmaceutical management” will suit to my fina goal? Thanks

        • Drrishasaxena, in this case NM Pharma is not the right program for you. Among the colleges mentioned by you IIHMR Jaipur, GIM HCM and TAPMI HCM are likely to help you achieve your objective.

          • Thanku sir thanks a lot, m setting my priority order as4-Gim,Tapmi, Iihmr , sihs. Thanks and regards

          • drrishasaxena, this message is from Surabhi who has inadvertently posted the message to the person who query is below yours. Can you please respond here and I’ll update her.

Hello Dr rishi. May I know what did you finally opt for. This year I have received the same calls and I am in the same dilemma. Please help.

  18. Sir ,
I have been working in my own company that is an e commerce Website for 18 months. Will this be counted as valid work experience? Please help.

  19. Sir,

  20. guys I have got 54% in 10 and 84% in 12 and 69%
in grad. am I eliglble to get any reputated MBA
CLG at higher percentile plz help m confused
and upto what percentile should I get for ximb,MDI,imi , mfc ,MiB,
plz reply sir m confused I have to appear this year ..

    • Vikas, with your marks most of the IIMs are ruled out but fortunately most of the good B schools outside IIMs have a low/no weight for past academics and hence will not be a problem.
You should target around 97%ile for MDI and around 92%ile for the others.

  21. Sir my academic past is very weak-10th-68 percent, 12- 52 percent, b.tech- 72 percent, also i took a drop after 12th and completed btech in 5 yrs due to an accident in 4th sem.. so i wanted to ask you that is there any chance of me securing a seat in reputed A grade B-school?
I really want to pursue mba but what are my chances sir can i get in reputed iim..iits ,jbims or any A grade college due to this weak academic background?

    • Nirav, based on your marks in X/XII most of the IIMs would not be possible for you but fortunately most of the good B schools outside IIMs have a low/no weight for past acas and hence will not be a problem.

  22. Hi Sir,
    My XAT percentile is 81.49.
    11 months Work-ex(TCS). Then I resigned
    I have applied and Expecting Calls from XIMB(orissa domcile),TAPMI,Great Lakes(pgdm),K J Somaiya,Welingkar, IMT N,H,D
Snap I have calls from SIIB,SIBM-B.
I am a bit apprehensive about (XIMB-HR). It seems they give MHRM degree.
    What shall I do
    Kindly Help
    Thanks in Advance

    • Dibyajeet, go for the interview and convert the call. Only when you convert should you worry about which institute to join.
MHRM is not a problem because it is effectively MBA in HRM.

  23. Sir, I am into my final year of Engineering. I gave cat,xat and nmat in 2014 , my percentiles have been around 90 in cat and Xat .. Also I have received a GD/PI call from Nmims MUMBAI. I was hoping to join only the IIMs but since I have not scored well for this year , should I try next year or should I go for NMIMS and join the college if able to convert the call? How is NMIMS compared to IIMs?

    • Prakhar, if you are confident of over 98%ile in CAT’15 then go for a retake. However you should in any case attend the NM interview and try converting the call as it is a very good institute. The decision to join or go for a retake should be taken after you get the final call.

  24. Respected Sir,

I was a CL student at chennai . I began my MBA hunt in 2014, and wrote 5 exams , sadly they did-not go to plan, here some of the scores.

IIFT – 31.99 (missed cut off by 6.5 marks)
    CAT – 84-ile (95 in quant, 64 in QA)
XAT – 95.40 (99 in VA, 82 in DM and 61 in QA)

I have 3 years of work experience and begun my MBA quest late into my experience. I have now also got a better position in a bigger company as well. However as it is my dream to make it to big and prestigious B-schools of India.

What would you advise me to do? I have an obvious strength in verbal, but quant isnt my cup-of-tea. Would you recommend me for one more year of study and crack quants , or would you tell me to leverage the scores i have for good institutes.

I am opinionated about just getting any other MBA, and want to do it from a top-school, also feel my quants let me down and wont get me a good-school.

Kindly share your thoughts sir. Would be invaluable.

    • Harish, suggest that you go for one last shot at CAT/XAT/IIFT but this time take GMAT and try for ISB Hyderabad also. Since GMAT is an adaptive test the test taking technique changes so you should target GMAT in Jun-July which will leave you with 3-4 months for CAT/IIFT/XAT.

  25. GP sir
I started my CAT 15 preparations since December. Have been working dedicatedly.
    Just need some guidance.
    1. Will the CAT be conducted in November this year as well or earlier?
    2. I am working for a reputed IT MNC. Hence, considering I am working, could you please tell me how many hours of study should I devote on weekdays. Weekends I have the luxury of studying, along with that I go for coaching as well.
    3. What is the ideal time to start Mock CATs?

    • Isha, apologise for the delay in responding to your query.
      1. Yes CAT will most probably be conducted in November this year also.
      2. 2-3 hours on weekdays and 6-8 hours on holidays should be sufficient.
      3. Follow the schedule of Mock CATs, do not wait for completing the syllabus, this will help improve your test taking strategy.
