Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain – SSC CGL

This is the best of times;this is the worst of times.

This is that time of the year when results of all the major MBA entrance exams (CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP) have been declared. Those of you who have secured good scores in one or more of these exams and have been short listed for the next stage have started their PDP classes and are working hard to do well in the Personality Assessment process.

However, most of you are wondering what went wrong and what is the way forward? Some of you have given up on this admission season and are thinking of CAT ‘16. Many of you have already appeared for CMAT in January and many are contemplating to appear for MAT and Maharashtra CET (for MBA) in February and March respectively.
Many of you are planning to compromise and join MBA institutes which follow the philosophy that even trespassers will be admitted. The reality is that out of the over 4000 approved MBA institutes in the country not more than 100 are worth joining. It is only these top 100 that will provide you with a decent education that will be valued in the industry and will help you get an acceptable job. The remaining 98% institutes will give you an MBA degree/PGDM which will not be worth the paper it is printed on.
In many lower end MBA institutes, you will have to invest over Rs. 10 lakhs in tuition fee and other expenses for two years and then if you are fortunate you will get a job offer of Rs. 3 lakhs per annum. The fact is that an MBA from a lower end institute will only reduce your market value.
For those of you who do not have a good job and do not have an interview call from a good college and are hoping that CET will be your way out, let me offer another option – Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGL) conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGL)
Staff Selection Commission is India’s largest recruiter for the central government and its most important exam is the Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGL). Candidates who are successful in CGL join the Group B and C services of the central government and can become Group A officers through promotions.

Why CGL?

Purely in financial terms, the salary and benefits of Group B and C officers are far better than what you can expect from jobs through lower end MBA institutes. Starting salaries for these posts are around Rs. 55,000-60,000 per month. The other benefits include free housing, medical support for life for your family and post retirement support (extremely rare in the private sector).
Further, you have to work only 5 days a week and not more than 8 hours a day. Thus, you are left with lots of time for further career enhancement (Civil services or MBA). In fact, the work-experience here might come in quite handy for you when you decide to retake MBA entrances.
If you join the government through CGL exam (with a good rank) at an early age (below 24), there is a good chance that you may be able to enter the coveted Group A services by the time you are 30 and thus, get almost at par with those people who enter the government through UPSC’s Civil Services Examination. I wonder what a candidate can achieve if he/she becomes a graduate at the age of 21 and clears CGL at that age!!!

Assistant Audit officer
A new post Assistant Audit Officer in Indian Audits and Accounts Department under CAG has been added this year. This post is a non-ministerial gazette post with a grade pay of Rs 4800. This is the first time a post with Grade Pay of Rs 4800 has been included in SSC CGL, whose in hand salary touches Rs 60000 with a CTC of 9.5 lacs, considering the 7th Pay Commission recommendations.

What is CGL like?

CGL, like MBA entrance exams, tests English (including basic comprehension), Reasoning, Quantitative Ability and General Awareness. There are three stages of this examination – Tier 1, Tier 2 and Date Entry Test / Skills Test (wherever applicable).
CGL Tier I is a 120 minute, 200 question MCQ test with 1 mark for every correct answer and -1/4 for every incorrect answer. The test has the following structure:
Part A: General Intelligence & Reasoning – 50 questions of 1 mark each
Part B: General Awareness – 50 questions of 1 mark each
Part C: Quantitative Aptitude – 50 questions of 1 mark each
Part D: English Comprehension – 50 questions of 1 mark each

Mathematical Ability section is full of questions on Arithmetic and you will find this section easier than QA of MAT. Most of the questions in General Awareness are based on static information and hardly any of them are from Current Affairs.
Since you have prepared for the MBA entrance examinations, there is hardly anything new that you need to do except for practicing a few test papers.
Cutoffs for clearing Tier I in the last two years (2014 and 2015) have been 96.5 and 102.25 for general category students. There are no sectional cutoffs, so there are people who have cleared Tier I without attempting a single question from one of the sections.
If you qualify in this Tier, you get a chance to appear in Tier 2 of this examination. One important thing is that you carry forward your marks from this tier to the next stage and thus, you should not be focusing on merely clearing the cutoff but target a score of 150.

CGL Tier II has two papers of 200 marks each as given below:

Paper I: Quantitative Ability – 100 questions of 2 marks each
Paper II: English Language & Comprehension – 200 questions of 1 mark each

Both the papers are of objective type and the level of difficulty is lower than what you have experienced in your MBA entrances. The two papers are conducted on the same day in different time slots.
At this stage, the next shortlist gets prepared on the basis of 600 marks (200 for Tier 1 and 400 for Tier 2). The cutoff for CGL 2015 examination for this stage is 430.75 (out of 600). Even if you do not feel very confident about Tier 2 examination at this stage, do not worry as you will get 2-3 months time between Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Eligibility for CGL

Those of you who are graduates as on 1st Aug 2016 or as on 1st Jan 2016 (notice dated 22nd Feb 2016) and are below 30 years of age (on August 1, 2016) can apply for it. The notification for SSC CGL is out and is available at CL’s Bank & SSC blog.

The last date of application is March 24. For reserved category aspirants, there is some age relaxation. What’s more, you have to pay only Rs 100 as the examination fee and absolutely NOTHING if you belong to the fairer sex or if you belong to SC/ST category. I wonder why the government does not allow final year (of graduation) students to appear in it. Even UPSC allows final year students to appear in the Civil Services Examination.

Should Engineers/students from good colleges go for CGL?
Many of my colleagues/ex-colleagues who are from decent engineering colleges have joined government jobs through SSC CGL exam. A few names that immediately spring to my mind are Rajat Sen and Himanshu Joshi from Delhi College of Engineering, Himanshu Joshi (DCE again), Ankur Mittal from HBTI, Kanpur etc. Moreover, appearing for an examination does not mean that you will be forced to take up the job. My suggestion is that you keep it as one of your options at least. This is definitely a better option than joining a lower rung MBA institute. The work experience that you gain here will in any case be helpful when you go for a retake of MBA entrances.

Take a Mock CGL Tier I paper

Why don’t you to experience Tier 1 of SSC CGL on 28th Feb 2016, Sunday at our centers spread across the country? CL is conducting an open mock test for SSC CGL Tier 1. CL students can take the test for free by showing their CL ID card and for non CL students there is a nominal fee of Rs 99. In the worst case, you will get some practice for your MAT/CMAT/CET paper.

    • Dear Student
before jumping into anything kindly clear your mind on what you want to pursue and where your true calling lies

  2. Hello Sir
I have completed my M.Tech from DTU in 2016 and my age is 25+, and do not have a satisfying job, so should i target SSC CGL 2018 and prepare or go for some other career option like going into IT or doing certification in business Analyst profile and go for job in that field.
Kindly suggest me something that should be done considering my age and other factors.
    Thank You

    • Saurabh, selecting a career option depends entirely upon your interest. If you plan to target SCC CGL 2018, then keeping in mind your age it is highly recommended that you take up a job and continue your preparation for SSC CGL side by side.

  3. Hello sir,
I had applied for SSC CGL 2016 exam. I was in B.tech final year in the session 2015-16. Also, I have given the final semester examination in may 2016. So, the result will be declared on last week of August 2016 or even late. And also my form is provisionally selected.
So, please tell me whether I am eligible for the SSC CGL 2016 exam or not. Please inform me.
    Thanking you!

    • Vaibhav, all the candidates declared qualified by the Commission will be required to produce the relevant Certificates such as Mark sheets for all the three years of Graduation/ Provisional Certificate/ Certificate of Graduation in original as proof of having acquired the minimum
educational qualification on or before the 1 st August 2016. The Candidates who are able to prove, by documentary evidence, that the result of the qualifying examination was declared on or before the cut-off date and he/she has been declared passed will also be considered to meet the Educational Qualification.

  4. Sir,
I am currently a first year student at pgp 2016-18 batch of a new IIM. I have a work ex of 42 months at Engineering Design firm. I am 26 years old and after a lot of effort i managed to clear both CAT and SSC exams last year. Sadly I couldn’t capitalize on some better offers like NITIE or IIT Delhi, but after much consideration and discussion i joined this college. Our course has just began when i got the SSC notification that i have secured a post of Divisional Accountant in the office of CAG. It has a grade pay of 4200 and from what i have heard it’s a very comfortable job. I still haven’t applied for a student loan and have only paid the fees for the first term. I am quite confused and in desperate need for some good advice. Please if you can advise me on what should i do, i will be very grateful.

    • Dushyant, the two careers that you are considering (MBA & SSC) are very different and you will need to be decide based on your priorities. While CAG will give you a comfortable, low pressure, secure job you will compromise on career growth and money. On the contrary MBA will give you better career opportunities and obviously higher salary.
If you decide to continue with MBA my suggestion is to go for a retake and hopefully you will move to a higher ranked institute.
Call me at 9811155160 in case you want to discuss the issue.

    • Abhinav, after completing an MBA HR, you become employable for any profile in HR domain. You can apply for job in both sectors; public or private. There are various job opportunities for MBA in HR as companies need to hire people as HR administrators. You can easily get jobs such as HR Generalist, technical recruiter, Talent Acquisition Manager, Compensation Manager, Employee Relations manager.

  5. Hi sir,
I am in T.Y.Bcom and I am going to appear for CMAT17 but interesed in persuing CGL so can u please guide me with whether the course of CMAT and CGL are same or not..!!!

    • Devanshi, both exams test a candidate on logical reasoning, language aptitude, general awareness, quantitative aptitude. However, the area of general awareness is vast in CGL. In CGL you are tested on general science, whereas CMAT tests the candidates on general awareness. The difficulty level of CGL is much higher than CMAT.

  6. Dear Sir, I am in a confused state right now as I have got an opportunity of working in TCS but want to give SSC CGLE too. Joining of TCS is from 20th june 2016 and CGLE 2016 is in August 2016. The main problem is if I join TCS I will not be able to study well for SSC CGLE 2016 so i don’t know what to do right now. Should I join TCS or leave it. I have confidence that I can crack CGLE 2016. I am an engineering graduate of June 2015 batch. I also gave CGLE 2015 but got only 411.25 marks in that as i was weak in general awareness and english back then. Now I am working on both of them. Please guide me….

    • Rishabh, since it will be your second attempt you already had taste of real exam situation. Also, you are confident about your preparation. It is suggested to take up the job. Prepare along with it. Devise a study plan that can be worked out with job.

    • Seetu, the choice of career has to be taken by you. If you wish to pursue SSC, then go for it. However, both are equally rewarding career paths.

  7. Sir, I’m confused in choosing the right career option. First of all this is my profile:-
    10:-67%
    12:- 69%
Btech:- Elex and Comm 65% 2013
Work Ex:- 23 months family business
    Cat:89.9 percentile OBC
Only selected in IRMA and also preparing for SSC CGL 2016.
Actually right now I’m comfused whether to go for SSC or take admission in IRMA. I’m little bit inclined towards rural sector but not whole heartedly. Ssc cgl is govt job paying hamdsome salary i want to take it but when i look towards long term goal then i see nothing in govt job. Irma avg package is 8.5 lpa for 2016. What should i do? Take exam of ssc cgl again or go for irma? I have already paid the first year fees but thats not the issue. See, my long term goal is to earn atleast 20-25 lpa within 6 yrs. Though if i get an examimer post I’ll be getting 55000-60000 a month by 2017 December since the joining of the post will not come before that for SSC CGL 2016. Means by the time my mba is completed I’ll be getting around 10 lpa throgh ssc and i think the same I’ll get after passing from irma. But here i have to invest 10 lakhs as fees. But taking care of my long term goal will it be wise to leave irma and prepare for ssc cgl?

    • Abhinav, considering your long term goal you should retake CAT and aim for top B-school. You should prepare for SSC SGL as well. An MBA degree from top b-schools can help you to achieve your long term goal.

  8. hello sir
I have heavily benefited from all your information available on this blog. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your commendable job. I am a class 12 student, i have just given the board exams and waiting for the results. I am not interested in engineering but i have a deep desire to do an MBA from an IIM, preferably A,B or C. I have decided to do a normal graduation from a regional college, Bsc, and prepare for CAT in those 3 years. Is it a nice choice or should i prepare for JEE another year and get into a good engineering college to ensure job security? i scored a decent 95% in class 10 exams and am expecting close to 90% in class 12. what should be my path to avail my dream of studying at IIMA? am i too early into preparations? is it very much neccesary to have a graduation from a reputed college even if u can score good in CAT? please guide sir. I would be grateful.

    • Subodh, since you are in class XII you should prepare for JEE in order to get into a good institute for graduation. The graduation from every college is regarded equal during a B-school interview. For now, you should work hard for getting into a good under-graduation college. You may start preparing for CAT during y pre-final or final year of the college.

  9. Sir, plz advise which one to go for as a fresher? MBA in forest managment from IIFM bhopal or SSC CGL 2016? is iifm good enough to leave ssc cgl?

    • Sharma, MBA and SSC are both different career options. You have to take a final decision based on your interest. If you are inclined towards Forest Management, then IIFM is one of the premier B school for doing an MBA in same the specialization.

  10. Sir,I am selected as an Specialist(IT) officer in Syndicate bank(Govt Job).In Cat 2015 I got 90 percentile.Should I try Once more for CAT and get into a B-school? or Should I aim for civil services and SSC-CGL and proceed higher up in the Govt sector?

    • Mushfique, the choice of career has to be done by you. If you are interested in doing MBA, then retake CAT and target top institutes.

  11. Sir i got selected in IRMA. I have neen preparing for SSC CGL from past 1 yr and I have an experience of 2 yr of family business.
I’m still confused whether to go to IRMA or give SSC CGL. No problem of fees at all. But I’m in dilemma as exam of SSC CGL is nearby and have to pay the fees of IRMA before 30th April. Please suggest me what to do in this case?

    • Abhinav, if you are interested in Rural Management then you should go for it as IRMA is the premier B school doing specialization in rural management. However, the choice of career has to done by you.

  12. 10th- 66.17
    12th-65.4

  13. Sir, i have taken all mba exams. i scored 96 & 99 percentile in cmat and mat resp. gave interviews of sitm, kj somaiya, xime and hoping for welingkar. results awaiting. thinking to give manipal university interview, is it a ggod option? or should i go for ssc because my ultimate aim is to be ias officer. i am ceramic engineer passed in 2015 only. please suggest me what to do?
    waiting for your reply.

    • Pooja, we’re sure you must have filled up the SSC for, last date of which has gone by. You must consider taking CAT again this year and aim for better institutes. Take up a job (if you dont have one already) and prepare along with it. Also, if you have filed up the SSC form, take the exam and then decide later what you should be doing.

  14. Sir,
I left my job after working for 14 months (IT sector). I have calls from IMI Delhi and GIM Goa. Please tell me should I take admission in one of these two colleges or try for SSC CGL. Which option would be beneficial in the long run ?

    • Anmol, It is completely your call. If you wish to study from some better B-school then it is suggested to take CAT’16. You should also give SSC CGL. Both career options are equally good.

  15. Hello,I would like to know what is the best post preference which gets me placed in mumbai and that too with a good salary. What is the minimum marks so that I can assure getting a job in Mumbai?
I live in Lucknow,I want to know can I apply for Mumbai too? Please DO revert back to my doubt:)

    • Akash, What exam marks are you referring to? And a good MBA degree would allow you to find and get a job wherever you want.

  16. Sir i want to do mba finance from iims. I want to ask you which works experience wil be more valued and beneficial for me a bank po job or ssc group B job. I heard that for mba finance, financial work exp is better. So should i go for ssc or continue with bank. Please guide sir. Thank you.

    • Abhishek, every experience has its value. You can take up a job which you feel is best suitable. Both will be beneficial to you.

  17. sir, as you mentioned that students who does not get good percentile in CAT. should not go for institution which are not Worth in a terms of management education. sir can you please advise me as I’m looking forward for mba at (one of these) MILE pune, ABS Noida.

    • Veer, my suggestion would be to look forward for better institutes. Take up a job and prepare for CAT’16

  18. GP Sir, greetings!
I am a MBA student at DSM, Delhi Technological University. Last year I got offers from NMIMS -B,H. SIBM-B, SITM, SIOM, IMT-H,N, SRCC-GBO(Delhi), BITS Pilani. I did not get a good % in CAT…83.23%. However, this B school is not providing ample opportunities in terms of placements. Till now, I have no intership offer. Not one, yes, not one company has visited DSM, DTU(formely D.C.E) for internship offers. I have cleared a govt job exam in pay scale of 23400-300-42500 which offers me Executive Trainee(ET) position. This year I again got selected for NM Bangalore and missed Mumbai. I am in a dilemma…should I continue my MBA as DTU is a good brand or leave it and prepare for other govt jobs and give MBA exams next year or join this govt organization this year itself.

    • Rocky, Government organisations can usually defer joining by a year hence my suggestion is to complete your MBA at DTU and join this organisation next year. After working for around 5 years you can go for an executive MBA from ISB or the IIMs or top schools outside India.

  19. sir,
Please tell me which is one better cat or ssc cgl interview. At now my cmat 2016 percentile 94.5 and i have call for interview (bimtech noida, sies mumbai, balaji, wellingkar) but sir doubt what should i do? Should i go to that this collge for mba or prepare ssccgl2016 .My communication skill is not as good and no finacial good. So please help me what should i do?

    • Saurabh, the best way would be to prepare for CAT 2016 and also take SCC CGL during this time in May.

  20. Hello Sir,

I’m a fresher graduate looking for job as my family condition is not good so I worked in private and I left because it was not satisfactory. I want to prepare for competetive exam. Primarily I’m focusing on SSC CGL and Bank PO. But I’m not much aware of what should I prepare for.
Even I searched online but didn’t get proper answer. So I would like to ask you because of your experience you better know, which will be preferable based on exam difficulty level and preparation time requirement.

    • Washim, you should prepare for both the exams since they have a 70% overlap and both provide good job opportunities. In terms of preparation time, about 4 months are sufficient to be well prepared.
email me your contact details at gp@careerlauncher.com and I’ll connect you to someone who can guide you.

  21. hello sir, my date of birth is 13- 11 -1990.
till how any years i will be eligible for ssc exams ?
    belongs to general category.

one ore doubt regarding age criteria- will candidates be eligible if their running age is 27, for example “27 years and 6 months old.”

    please help me sir.

    • Hi Rajya Lakshmi,
Sorry for responding so late to your concern.
      1. The age criteria range for various posts under SSC are from 18 years to 32 years.so you have a window of 14 years to give examinations. For more clarity , kindly refer to the original exam notification of SSC CGL.
No the age rules are strict and if they say that eligibility is up to 27 years for a particular post then even one day above the prescribed age will debar you from candidature.
Hope these responses serve your concern.
      Thanks

  22. Hi,
I am from UR category and my ssc cgl 2015 marks come around 430-440(tier1+ tier2). I have given interview posts mainly as my first preferences followed by non interview posts (non interview post is also given in the preference list). Assuming that I do qualify for interview, If I don’t appear for the interview, will I be considered for the non interview posts? Or is it like I have to attend the interview mandatorily?
Will I be considered for the non interview posts (as I have given them in post preferences) if I decide to skip the interview.
    Regards,
    Deuthi

    • Dear Deuthi,
As far as appearing for the interview is concerned , you have to necessarily appear for the interview or else you won’t get the interview post.Regarding skipping the interview process and its consequences , we would advise that you please speak to the SSC authority, they are the right source of information.
      Thanks

    • Dear Gaurav,

  23. sir how many vacancies are there in cgl 2015.? sir how will they prepare the result if they do not know the number of vacancies till now.? because cut off is declared by taking into account the no.of vacancies

    • Dear Vaibhav,
Thanks for sending in the query. Kindly note that in 2014 there was final recruitment of 15500+ aspirants. For your concern, please know that this year it should be to the tune of around 15 to 18k in all probability based on market inputs.

now should i give another year for preparation or should i go for a mediocre private job.
    please help me?

    • Dear Harry,
Thanks for writing in, pls know that improving gk is a long and persistent task. You should do the following to improve your gk for SSC examination.
      1. Go through the fundabooks of GK provided to you.
      2. Attend the gs sessions by learned faculty.
      3. If you still feel that you are not adequately prepared then please revisit the NCERT BOOKS of that particular subject from 8th to 12th standard.
      4. Have patience and work hard till you succeed in mastering the subject.
      Hope these inputs will help.

  25. I am getting only 88 marks(general) in ssc cgl 2015 according to the official answer key.I am completely dejected as I am 2014 graduate pass out. What should
I do now? Also my parents are completely against me joining govt sector. They are constantly pressuring me to join private sector job. But the only goal in my life is to do govt job.
In the examination I completely messed up. In the first 1 hour I only attempted 22 questions from quant section. My speed is very low in quant section even after working so hard on it.what should I do to increase my speed in quant section??. i prepared from quantum cat from arihant which has all the shortcuts but still there is no improvement.
My distribution of score is- reasoning-31
Quant-19 gk-14 english- 26 .what should I do to improve every section? Especially gk.
Also Should I wait for another year or join a mediocre private job?
I was not bad in academics. I scored 90 % marks in tenth, 80% in 12th and 70% in b.tech. but till now I have not been able to clear a single competitive exam from iit jee to now bank or ssc.
I am not able to understand what does it take to clear a competitive exam
    Can u please help me.

    • Dear Harry,
Though I have already responded to your gk concern , would like to address your other concern of giving one more dedicated year to preparation or doing a mediocre private job.
To my mind you must take up a part time pvt. job and join a good coaching institute so that you are active and succeed at the government examination. Hope this will serve the intended purpose.
      Thanks

    • Dear Vinay,
Thanks for sending in the query. Here are the responses to your query.
      1. In order to get 400+ marks pay attention to reasoning and GK for sure so that you get 400 + alongwith Maths and English.
      2. For preparing Maths and English or any other subject you need to identify the weak area and solve as many questions as possible so that you master it.
      3. No there is NO information on pattern change.
      4. Though its very subjective, Income tax and Excise are generally considered as good ones.
      5. I think as per latest data , it is around 400+
Hope it will resolve your concerns.
      Thanks

  27. SIR CAN ONE OPT FOR SAME POST THROUGH SSC CGL IF ONE HAS ALREADY RESIGNED IT EARLIER?(E. G. AN ITI IF RESIGNED CAN HE GIVE HIS FIRST PREFERENCE AS ITI AGAIN?
    )

  28. Sir what would be the good score in tier 1? My score is near about 115??shall I start preparation for tier 2 ??how much marks will I have to score in tier 2 to get excise inspector post(sc category) ?plz do reply

    • Dear Prasad,
Please know that the expected cut off WOULD BE AROUND 100 ( averaging both the days of exam) So if you are scoring 115 its good , but in order to get a Inspector post you must score at least 320 + for getting a call for interview as the last year’s General category cut off for interview post was around 427 marks.
      Hope it resolves your concern.

  31. Sir,

Now I am preparing for civil service. Now I need a back up desperately.
Just wrote SBI mains well. But I know SBI, the most hectic.
So aiming for ECGC,, EXIM banks in IBPS PO due to 1. less pressure 2.only 5 days work.

But my firends told me SSC CSS will be even better for UPSC preparation.
I hope they are right.I want ur opinion sir,

Also is it possible to get 4 months leave for UPSC mains preparation if i clear prelims next year.

    Please do reply, sir

    • Dear Sarvam,
In my opinion CSS is a better bet than SBI PO or other posts if your aim is to prepare Civil Services. When it comes to getting leave , I think its govt. policy matter , you need to be there to get the correct response.
      Hope this answer will help.

    • Dear Kartik,
Thanks for sending in the query. Here is the response to your query. After going through your query , I can recommend you that rather than running here and there for different exams their posts and level of difficulty, you should prepare for SSC CGL and get a officer level job , like IT inspector , Excise inspector etc. For knowing about SSC CGL Examination, please refer to SSC.IN website. OR to know more about it you can go to any nearest CL center for counselling.

  36. Hi Sir,
I have a question. Please answer. Sir, is it easy to get 470+ marks within 600?? I mean how many students get this marks? Last year my marks was 87.50 in Tier-1 without a single preparation. As I am general category student can’t able to appear in Tier-2. But this year I am working hard, thats why I am asking, is it easy to get at lst 450+marks? I am well in Maths but not in English, and it carries 200 marks in Tier-2, Sir any preparation strategy for english? Is Kiran Publication Tier-2 English book enough? And sorry sir I have one more question, how many students get above 120+ marks in SSC CGL Tier-1 approximately? I am asking this because I think in that case only it is easier to get 450+ marks. Sir if you kindly answer me I will be grateful.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Sayantani Ghosh

    • Hi Sayantani,
Thanks for sending in the query, here is the response to your concern. Let me tell you it is quite competitive to get 470+ marks out of 600 in CGL looking at the present level of papers. As you yourself , say that you are NOT good in English so it makes it all the more difficult to get the 470+ score , but through hard work anything is possible , I would suggest rather than collecting data about 470+ or 120+ its better that you work hard and focus on getting the aimed score. Hope this answer will serve the intended purpose.

  37. Hi Sir. I completed my B. tech in EEE from a top tier institute BITS Pilani. I am currently working in IT with a monthly salary of 60K but losing interest in the field. I do not want to prepare for UPSC as it will take too much hard work. Within 3-4 years i can get a package of more than 15LPA .So should I appear for government exam?

My top priority would be to get Examiner post; so what are the additional benefits provided by the government? When will i get the govt accommodation or more specifically when will i get the bungalow?

And one final question What are the general questions asked in interview and can they deny post to the guy on the basis of interview?

Thank you in advance and I really appreciate you answering all the queries. Keep up the good job.

    • Dear Shubham ,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that if your target is to get 15 LPA in 3 to 4 years then I think you must aim for Civils though the route to success is tough but as they say NO RISK NO GAIN !! I would not recommend you for examiners post after doing a B Tech that too from BITS Pilani. You better prepare for Civils , I think that is surely a better bet.
      Hope it serves your concern.

  38. Sir what will be the good score to get posted in Mumbai or Maharashtra region for interview posts inspector in excise or tax…..for sc category in cgl2015

    • Dear Nilseyes,

Thanks for sending in the query. Please note as per the CGL -2014 the cut off for SC category for interview post was 365.50 in written part only so including interview marks if you can score 410 + then I think you should get excise or IT.
Hope it will serve the purpose.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL

    • Dear Shalu,
As per the cut off of the last year for ST category, which was 349.75 in the written part , even after extrapolating it for this year , you should surely get a call for the interview.
      Hope it serves the concern.
      Thanks

  39. Sir,
I secured 470 marks in UR. But I had a horrible interview in which 3 guys asked me mechanical engineering and I kept saying sorry, i don’t know. However few questions on politics and hobbies- interests were relief points for me.
    20% questions- I answered well.

Is there any chance of getting interview post in SSC-CGL?

    • Hi Rishabh,
Based on the data of last year ( which was 426+ for for UR in Tier I+ Tier II) and after its extrapolation , I feel that despite your not so good performance in the interview you still have fairly good chance of making it as
interview is about checking personality traits and NOT ONLY Academic knowledge as it has already been tested in the written part , so don’t be too concerned , you stand a good chance of making it.
      Wish You All The Best

    • Dear Nitish,
Thanks for sending in the query. For CGL -2016, here are some relevant suggestions:
      1. Join a good institute like Career Luncher. It will help you in being disciplined, aware and focused towards your chosen goal.
      2. Buy a past years papers book and go through it religiously as IT WILL HELP YOU BECOME AWARE OF THEN REAL QUESTIONS ( which is INDISPENSABLE to crack the paper)
      3. Figure out your weak areas in Quant , Reasoning , English and GK and FOCUS on them MAINLY.
      4. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE , is the MANTRA of SUCCESS SO PRACTICE MOCKS GRADUALLY to CRACK THE PAPER.

The preferred posts are Income TAX & Central Excise Inspectors , followed by Assistant in Ministry of External Affairs and Central Secretariat Services (CSS)
Hope this response will serve the intended purpose.

    • Hi Neha,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that you have to be in the MERIT LIST to be offered a job( which is made after considering number of qualified applicants and the available posts), MERELY Qualifying does not GUARANTEE you a Job.

  44. I have found this post to be very useful sir. But i still have a few queries, I am a B.Com graduate from School of Open learning Delhi University with not so stellar performance either in X or XII. I am one of your those pathetic students who never bothered to study systematically during school days but with that being said i am a quick learner (very quick to be honest and during my graduation i learned how not to get distracted) and very good in math (80% in maths and statistics in B.com)
and Reasoning too. Clearing SSC CPOs or CGL is my only aim. Can this “open learning” aspect of my degree and my performance during school days somehow completely overshadow my potential in the eyes of interviewer during interviews. Also i am about to start taking coaching classes for SSC 2016 exams.

Important question-Can i clear CPOs exam if i take admission in CGL classes. How much is the difference between the two exams?

I get a government job in next 24 months is a necessity for me. Plz help me out. Hoping for a detailed reply even though one can easily understand the amount questions you might have to answer every day. A good advice/guidance at this stage of life is truly an invaluable thing sir.

    • Ashish, a good performance in B.Com despite being an Open Learning student is an achievement and not a disadvantage and I am sure the interviewers will also look at it similarly. CPO is a subset of CGL and you can easily clear the test by taking admission in CGL program.

  45. Dear Sir,
I have ssc cgl interview on 4th July. I was in Maruti Suzuki previously and worked for over 3.5 years and was getting a good salary ( nearly Rs 46000pm). Then I quit the job to prepare for upsc. It has been nearly 8 months since i quit this job.Meanwhile I have been called for cgl 2014interview . Should I disclose to Interview panel about my upsc preparation. Or should I tell that I quit the job for ssc as I was not satisfied with my job in Maruti.I mean what should I reply to the question” Why you left the previous job?”
    Please reply
    thank you

    • Hi Ajay,
Thanks for sending in the query. In answer to this question , you can say that I want to have a career in government sector which you sensed after doing the job in the Maruti Suzuki, therefore, you started preparing for Govt. jobs related examinations. The main reason that can be attributed for leaving Maruti can be
      1. I feel that I am capable of achieving more in life and Maruti job was not fulfilling this ambition.
      2. Why Govt. Job like Assistants job through SSC or may be UPSC is ,it is considered as a prestigious job which offers good salary, authority and quite importantly Job security.

When it comes to telling them about UPSC preparation, please be diplomatic and you can say that at present Iam focusing on CGL and would like to achieve the coveted job, try to avoid this UPSC preparation aspect and if it is asked by one way or the other eventually , you need to be logical in your response saying , definitely UPSC /Civils is a better bet and would love to go for it once I secure a job through SSC CGL Examination!!
Hope it serves your concern .
      Thanks

after that I have been preparing for various competitive exams.

I just want to know what would be the safe score for CSS in this category ..plz reply ASAP.. And by that I am asking overall score…all exams plus interview ..

    • Hi Praneet Sharma,
Thanks for sending in the query , as per SSC for CGL 2014 the written cut off(Tier I + Tier II) for interview post is 231.25 and final selection should safely happen at around 290. For the non interview posts it is 182. Hope this clarifies your concern.
      Thanks TEAM CL.

  47. Hello sir, I am appearing for cgl 2015. Can you please tell me how much time it takes to get final posting after the final interview??? because I have heard that it takes around one year after the interview to get posted. Thanks!!!

    • Hi Neloy,
Thanks for sending in the query, please know that the max time taken in getting posted is 6 months and NOT one year as per your information. So don’t get bothered by this fact , it is happening fast. Hope it will serve the concern.

    Thank you

    • Hi Christy,
Thanks for writing in , please know with the score of 370.25 and having ST category, you have quite good chance of getting interview post and statistical investigator/compiler post. Interview post includes IT inspector , excise inspector etc. But do not be complacent and work hard to achieve the desired job.
      All the best

  50. Dear Sir,

I am getting 477 marks (UR) in SSC CGL,14. My preferences are MEA, Examiner and ITI. How many minimum marks should i target in interview to ensure that i get MEA? Also, i can not find review of examiner post on google by someone working as examiner. If, you can through some insight on the present working culture of an examiner that would be a great help to me.

    TIA (:

    • Dear Tanuj,
Thanks for sending in the query. Your score as a general category candidate is quite impressive, as you are trying for the best job that is MEA therefore, though it is absolutely impossible to predict the cut off for the MEA call let me suggest that it is always advisable to get maximum marks in interview hence , please give your best shot to be on the safer side. Examiner post if it is in headquarter it will be clerical work , if in field then it will be executive job on goods exported/ imported and the duty assessment on that.
After 3 years of service as examiner he can be promoted to Appraiser post. It is considered as one of the best posts because of faster promotions as compared to other posts in CGL. Hope this data will help.
      Thanks

  51. Hello sir,
I am b.tech student completed in 2015 .can I give the SSC cgl exam in 2015? And how much time will it take to complete the procedure From tier1and2 till joining??????
Sir I am placed in infosis and I want to Prepare for SSC cgl is it better or not??

    • Hi Twincle,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that you have to be graduate while you apply for the CGL examination. In your case it looks you are so you are eligible. The time taken to get placed through CGL is roughly 1 year( from the perspective of getting placed). Asking for the choice between CGL and Infosys, I believe CGL can surely be looked at if you feel your monetary and career aspirations are NOT met there. If this is the particular case then you should go ahead with CGL preparation.
Hope it serves your concern well.
      Thanks

  52. Sir i am planning to give CAT’17 after having work experience. But the offer which i have at present is not worth joining and i was thinking to switch to a better job profile after, say a month or two,by leaving the job at hand.
Will this switching of job within a couple of months affect my MBA profile? Or should i wait till i find a job wherein i can stick longer and permanently till CAT’17?

    • Madhav, the earlier one does an MBA the better is the career growth hence my suggestion is to go for CAT this year itself. Work experience is helpful but not essential and many freshers also make it to top B schools including the IIMs. Suggest that you continue with the job till you get another one and simultaneously prepare for CAT’15 and other MBA entrances. If you are not successful in CAT’15 then CAT’16 & 17 are in any case available to you.

  53. Sir, I am a b.tech student(ece) 2014 passed out.No campus placement, thought to prepare for gate and ies but not get good marks in gate and also my preparation for ies is not upto that level which is required because of hectic schedule (9-10 hours of classes). I have no interest in coding and all those stuffs so should I prepare for SSC cgl 15 or should I drop for one more year and prepare for ies/psu or should I join a private company?
How much minimum time required for the preparation of cgl
How much time the complete process takes(from tier 1 to final joinig) suppose my tier 1 exam is on 14/21 Aug then by what time I will join the department….?
    Thanks in advance sir…

    • Hi Ankit,
Thanks for sending in the query, please know that based on what you have shared , it seems that trying for SSC CGL is NOT a bad option at all. You can look upto the CGL exam as another option, provided you prepare it in a committed manner. You will be required to put in at least 1 year ( Iam talking about it from the perspective of SSC Mains examination also) Practically it takes about 1.25 to 1.5 years to join the job. Hope this answer serve the purpose.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL

      • Thank you sir for your suggestions, Sir can I continue my preparation for ies after joining any department through cgl and which department should I choose so that i will continue my preparation for ies…?

        • Hi Ankit,
Surely yes you can continue your preparations for IES even after joining any department through CGL. Now please understand its very difficult to comment which department is best for preparation as Govt. jobs are becoming quite demanding also !I would say where there is will there is way so , take the job and make a way for preparing the desired examination.
Hope this response serves your concern.
          Thanks TEAM CL

      • Sir i am appearing for cgl 2015. Can u please tell me after how time of the final interview one gets posted? As I have heard from somewhere that it takes roughly 1 year after the interview to get posted. Thank you.

        • Hi Niloy,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please note that it is at max 6 months in general and definitely not one year.
          Hope this will help.
          Thanks
          TEAM CL

        • Hi ,
Kindly know that the process of deployment of personnel in the departments don’t take more than 6 months in general after the declaration of final results.
          Thanks

  54. sir i would like know does cat preparation help in clearing ssc exam also , what should i take a cat coaching class or an ssc coaching class right now

    • Neeraj, CAT coaching helps in almost all aptitude tests – SSC, Bank, GMAT GRE etc. Hence it is worthwhile to prepare for CAT and target MBA as well as SSC CGL and Bank PO exams. However if you want to appear only for SSC CGL then join SSC CGL classes.

  55. I dont understand why people do engineering from bad college like uptu when you have to go for ssc exam ….wasting 4 year of time …..better than that do bsc with ssc and civil service preparation its a better option ….?

    • Devesh, 70% of the students get into engineering and then realise that this is not what they want to do.

  56. Sir, i am confused between asst in css and income tax inspector post. which i should go for? which is better in terms of promotion, powers? actually my home town is delhi and my parents wants me to stay in delhi with them and i also want that but at the same time i want a job that should satisfy me and that is iti but chances of getting delhi is not good. is there any chance of shifting to delhi if i get my joining outside delhi? kindly suggest something sir?

    • Hi,
Thanks for sending in the query, please know that transfer to Delhi after joining IT depends upon the availability of job in delhi. So its very difficult to say whether after joining your IT job you will be easily shifted to Delhi or NOT. Or else there are very good departmental promotions in CSS also after clearing departmental internal examinations and you can move upto the rank of under secretary by the end of your career which I feel is also a very powerful post having the bonanza of staying in Delhi attached to it right from the beginning. !! So you have to take a call on which one is a better option for you.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL

  57. Sir, first of all thanks a lot for your help. I wanted to ask that if a candidate doesn’t clear the interview, and any interview post is his first choice, will he be considered for non-interview posts. Or should one fill non-interview posts as starting preferences followed by interview posts?

    • Hi Krishna ,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that if you have not filled non interview post as your preference then you WILL NOT be considered for non interview post , as it is necessary to fill the non interview post as a preference to be considered eligible for the non interview post.
      Hope it serves your purpose.
      Thanks

  58. Hi…
I would like to know is there any limit on number of attempts in SSC – CGL. If yes, how is it counted (If I fill the form, it is counted or If I appear for Tire -1 exam, then it is counted).
    Please help.Thanks

    • Hi Akshiv, Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that the limit is on age and not in number of attempts , so your second question does not hold good .I hope this serves your query well.
      Thanks TEAM CL

  59. Sir,
I have been selected for ITI in cgl-2013. How much time will it take for the joining letter to come, what are the procedures thereafter, which post is better ITI or examiner and career prospects in ITI.
Please tell me sir and I will be really really thankful to you.

    Rohit Raj

    • Dear Rohit,
Thanks for sending in the query. Let me tell you that at max six months from the date of result , they offer the joining letter.
Surely Income Tax Inspector is better as it is a authority driven job.It surely has fine prospects ranging from Inspector to Senior levels of Senior ITI , and probably can lead to additional commissioner Income tax by the time of retirement. Hope it serves your concern.
      Thanks

  60. Sir, i want to know what would be the inhand salary of section officer grade pay 5400 in css? how is the inhand salary calculated based on the grade pay?

    • Dear ritika,
Thanks for sending in the query , in the scale of 5400 in CSS , the salary that you will get in hand would be around 40000+. I suggest that the calculation of salary on the grade pay is something that can be cleared completely when you get the first salary slip!! Hope it will help.
      Thanks

  61. Sir
I have passed company secretary final exams and now I m doing internship of 1 year.
Plz tell me what to do to boost my career further. Should I prepare for mba or go for ssc cgl .
Or should I focus on my cs career. Im very confused. Plz reply….

    • Sanjay, this should not be an either-or situation. You should pursue your career in CS and also prepare for MBA entrances which will in any case prepare you for CGL.

  62. i havent filled non interview preference post in cgl 2014.will i be considered for that if i get required marks..

    • Dear Sumit,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please note that in order to get a non interview post you must fill in the non interview post choice. This is the reason why they ask for preferences. If you have not filled the interview post then you might not be considered for the non interview post. Hope it addresses your concern.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL

      • i have filled the interview posts..but i missed filling non-interview posts.. i filled from A to S Posts but not T to Z…

        • Dear Sumit ,
Let me clarify that if you have not filled for the non interview post then they will not consider you for the non interview post.
          Hope this answers your concern.
          Thanks

  63. Sir, i m in my final year of btech. SSC CGL notification says candidate shud be a graduate as on 01.08.2015, i will be a graduate before that but the problem is i dont have my degree %age with me as i m still waiting for my 7th sem result and 8th sem exams are not even started yet. What shud i fill in graduation %age and date of completion of degree? Am i eligible or not?

    • Dear Neha ,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please know that you have to fill in the percentage and all while filling the form , which means that you must be graduate then only you can apply by fulfilling the conditions of eligibility. Hence you should have all the requisite data and then you can apply.
      Thanks

  64. Dear sir

  65. Sir,
What is the training duration of excise inspector and does sending the nomination/dossier of a candidate to a region means that he is going to get posting in that area??

    Regards
    Gaurav

    • Dear Gaurav,
The duration of training / probation is of 2 years , and a person is liable to serve anywhere across the country with NO preferences attached.
      Resolves your concern.
      Thanks

  66. Sir,
My doubt is that Suppose I joined as SSC Assistant, later on I have got job through IES, then will the period of my service as Assistant be taken into account for promotions of IES job?

    • Hi Sravya,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please note to the best of my knowledge , the experience should not be counted.
      Thanks
      TEAM CL

    • Hi david,
Probably not, as you would have worked at the assistant post in SSC but NOT in IES. So the question of counting the experience in IES does not arise.Hope it will help in resolving your concern.
      Thanks
      Team CL

    • Hi Kuldeep,
Thanks for sending in this SMART query. By the way, pin pointing which one is our a better option for civil preparation , I would say a post which involves routine work and which can give you ample time for preparation is something you must aim for. It can be UDC or non interview post. Hope it serves your purpose.
      Thanks With Best

  67. Sir i’ve just ssc tier2 which was held on 12 april 2015. I expect to score 310 to 325 in tier two. I scored 127/200 in t1. So my xpected score out of 600 is smwhr bw 437-to 451. I cum undet UR.1) Do i hv chances to qualify for intrvu post.
    2) if yes , assuming lowest possible marks in intrvu wht job can i get and what will b the minimum assured hand salary.
    3) of i don’stand a chance for intrvu post wht can b my inhand salary in non intrvu
    Post.
    4) even aftr qualifyng for intrvu jobs if don’t qualify d intrvu m i going to end up jobless or i’ll automatically fall into non-intrvu post.?
    Plzzz reply

    • Dear Pragya
Thanks for sending in the query. Kindly note that based on the cut off of 2014 out of 600 for UR category, you have good chances of getting an interview post call. As the last year’s cut off was 425 and you stand at 437 to 451, even if we take some increment in this year’s cut off then also you do have good chances for interview call.
As far as getting the interview post , the lowest rank job that you can get is Assistant Sub inspector post in various departments which should give you a minimum take home salary of 30k and for non interview post minimum take home( cash in hand) that you can expect is about 25k +. Please note that the take home component and gross salary are different.

I hope this resolves your concerns. Feel free to write back to me in case of further query or concern.

      Thanks
      TEAM CL

  68. Hello Sir

Can you please tell me the expected date of joining for CGL 2013 posts? Also, please tell brief about the job status, responsibilities, future growth prospects and transfer options to different location after initial posting of Central excise inspector.
What is the first promotion of this post and how long does it take for the first promotion?
Is an accomodation also provided to excise inspector?

    regards
    Gaurav

    • Hi Gaurav,
Thanks for sending in the query. Here are the responses to your questions.
      1. Though the date of joining is generally not mentioned in the Government notifications but practically it is seen that generally the posting happens within 6 months from the date of final exam result declaration. So you need to be little bit patient.

      2. The job of Central Excise Inspector is quite prestigious and offers an interesting and challenging work to do. Here the officers are expected to address the issues primarily related with central excise and its implementation and ensure that the rules and regulations of Central Excise are completely followed.

      3. Generally the hierarchy of posts is first you become inspector then supervisor, then assistant commissioner , then deputy commissioner and you can reach at the level of the chairman of CBEC also!
4.The government does take care of your residence and other requirements.

Rest of the questions that you have asked depends upon various factors and hence are subjective.

I hope your query is adequately addressed.
      Thanks

  69. Dear Sir,
I am 2012 mechanical engineering graduate. I have worked for 8 months in a reputed MNC. After that i joined as Assistant in CSS through CGL,2012. I have been working as assistant in CSS from last 2 years now.

Now, i have converted IIFT but i am getting IIFT, Kolkata. With 7th pay commission around the corner will it be a good thing to join IIFT, Kolkata? Because if i wait for one year more than i will have three year work ex in CSS and after 3 years more i’ll be Group-B gazetted. My gross is 46000+ 3700 NPS contribution. I get in hand salary of 41,500. After pay commission it is bound to increase by 50% probably.

I am really confused sir. I want to quit this job only if it is worth taking risk for IIFT-K. Please help sir. What should be a wise thing to do at this stage?

    I am 23.5 years old.

    • And i will be investing around 16 lakhs and will lose 2 year salary.

Also, if i’ll try for next year then i think my work ex of 30+ months will be considered unhealthy.

      • Tanuj, you are complicating the issue, if you want to stick to government sector then drop IIFT Kolkata but if you want to move over to the corporate sector then you should join IIFT Kolkata. Do not look at short term gains/loses and miss out on the long term benefits. Also since you are in the first list of IIFT Kolkata most probably you will make it to IIFT Delhi but you will have to wait for the IIM results for the movement to happen.

        • Thank you Sir,
Your opinion on log term and short term gains has helped me a lot in making up my mind.
I want to switch to corporate but the seniors have been telling me that my academics and work ex in Govt sector (babu giri) will diminish my chances of getting a good package or a good firm during placements. Please help me with your opinion on my academics and work ex in govt sector. It will help me a great deal as currently i am not in contact with any of my past faculty. :/

          • Tanuj, I do not agree with your seniors. The reality is that hardly anyone with your background considers an MBA and when seniors talk about reduced chances for placement they are only guessing.
My point of view is that you have a very different profile and rather than it being a drawback it is likely to differentiate you from rest of the crowd of Engineers with IT experience.
I would love to hear from “seniors” how is software coding experience useful for MBA?
Foreign trade (or International Business) is also significantly about dealing with the government for all kind of paper work so “babu-giri” Placements will be a function of your performance in the MBA program and not your past academic performance or work experience so focus on doing well in the program and ignore the rest.

      • Dear Tanuj
I am in a similar situation as you were. If I can have ur id and we can get in touch, it’ll be really helpful.

  70. Hello Sir , Nice article.

I have been selected as Preventive Officer through SSC CGL 2013. I want some advice about the city I should choose. Do you know anything about training, housing facility etc or someone who can give any information.

    Thank you.

    Rohit

    • Dear Rohit,
Thanks for sending in the query, please know that it is preferable that you shopuld choose a place /city which you are comfortable with. This can be either your home town or a well developed place in terms of infra and connectivity so that you have better chances of growth with decent living standards.
As far as the housing, training and other facilities are concerned, its all provided by the government, so you do not have to worry about that. I hope this serves your concern.

    • Dear Manish,
Thanks for sending in the query, please know that SSC generally does not disclose the number of vacancies but as per newspaper reports they want to hire about 2 lakh people by 2015. So based on the trend of vacancies and the estimates, this year 20000 + vacancies can be considered a safe estimation.Hope it serves your concern.

  71. Sir I belong to general category and I have got 188 marks in both papers of SSC SI 2014. Sir how many marks did I need in interview to clear cutoff for itbp as itbp is my first preference
    Thankyou

    • Dear Kashish/Ashish,
Thanks for sending in the query. Please note that the last year cutt off for the ITBP in the final merit list of 2013 for General Category was 218.25. Despite the fact that the number of vacancies are likely to be same as last year, this year’s cut off is likely to be slightly higher as compared to the last year because the cut off of the pre exam is already relatively higher than the last year 2013, so its impact should manifest. Hence you need to secure at least 31 marks in interview(If we take last year’s data to be the FINAL data as the parameter of selection for this year) and if we take the current exam’s perspective then you should try to fetch as much as marks possible in the interview. I Hope if you can secure at least 40 marks in the interview then I think you should be in.
      Thanks

  72. Can you please tabulate the SSC CGL posts with these parameters:
    1.In hand salary.
    2.Group it belongs to.
3.Whether it is a uniformed profession or not.
    4.Degree of transferability.
5.A brief description of the role.
6.Work life balance(Since govt jobs don’t reward extra work the better the work life balance the better it is).
    7.Promotion prospects.

  73. Hello Sir,
I am passout of 2014 batch and have been working in MNC with ctc 4.2 lpa from last 8 months. Now i want to prepare for cgl-2015 and score good.I have been simultaneously preparing for bank exams and gave exams too.But i m not satisfied with my performance. Now m planning to quit the job and dedicatedly preparing. so would it be better to quit job and then prepare for ssc or should i wait for completion of 1 yr in company?

    • Seema, can you not continue with your job and prepare simultaneously? SSC CGL process can get delayed and will then put you under pressure.

  74. First of all…thank you for awesome article..and above all ur effort of replying to queries..

Sir i am 26yr old unemployed..will turn 27 in April…i wanted to ask if the interview in ssc cgl is a separate process like MNC hiring process where candidate can be rejected at last point also or is it like bank recruitment process where total marks of all written and interview is considered to make offer

  75. Hello Sir,
My year of birth is 1987 and at any condition I am not eligible for Inspectors posts of various departments. That I means I can only apply for the Inspector posts of CBI. Can you guide me how to prepare and how much effort do I have to put in for it?
Also in 2014 notification of SSC CGL I saw the maximum age limit for CBI Inspectors as 27. I am confused with this as it is hampering my preparations.
    Please guide me.

  76. Hi Sir, After reading lots and lots of blogs, attended carrier counselling ….I was not sure for my carrier . Then I came across your site and I must say U r doing a great great job !!!

Sir I am currently working in IBM Noida as a ASE and have 1.6 years work ex till now and have become Microsoft Certified Professional 2 months before.
As I am from ECE background I do not find this job as my carrier option in life and I am not interested also in IT.

Due to this I have given IAS / CGL in 2014. My score was IAS prelims – 156 — 1st attempt, CGL – 79 ….so I dont have any opp. in both . Now my query comes —>>>

    1) Private job (IBM) vs SSC CGL —- WHICH IS BETTER ??
    2) Will I get a good well deserved reputation and status through SSC-CGL as compared to above .
    3) Is work load or maintaining family life can be hectic in CGL ???
    4) should I take IAS coaching ….as I belive daddy is prep karoge toh beta toh clear ho hi jayega !!
    5) As in CGL 2014, I saw GS — coming from universe means it didnt have defined lines as in IAS …..So prep for other 3 sections can clear my cut off ??
    6) SSC- CGL vs JOB vs GRE (Masters)…..IAS has very very wide syllabus that I cant do with current job so what to opt …??

As I am bluntly stating — from what carrier option can I have ——–1) Money (incl. bribe)
    2) Reputation in society
    3) Maintaining a balanced life
    4) Great comfort

I am sorry for this long query I can further come and attend your counselling if u tell !!!

  77. hello sir,
i have one doubt that is my friend is now working as a sbi asst manager but he is willing to work in customs service. i dont have any idea about which one is best. in salary based which one is best tell me. if he get pass in that xam means, starting how much salary he il get? at wat post?

    • He can get into Customs Service via two routes
      a) He can appear for Civil Services exam ..choose IRS as his priority…this would definitely be better than SBI Assistant Manager. He will join as Assistant Commissioner (Customs)
      b) SSC CGL…starting salaries for these posts are around Rs. 35-40,000 pm which will increase with the 7th pay commission report to be implemented in Jan’16…He will join as a Preventive Officer.

    • Aashana, you should be a graduate on 1st Jan of the year of the test. Hence if you are planning to take CGL in 2015 then you should be a graduate on 1st Jan 2015.

  78. sir, I am working in it for 6 month with pay of 3.2 lpa 2014 passout. i want to prepare for ssc cgl 2015. but unable to study because of work in shifts. thinking to quit job and prepare.because i think even if i manage to study a hour or two daily.i won’t be able to crack cgl.
last year i got 96% in cat. this year expecting around 90. don’t think of mba anymore because i have to prepare for another year then 2 year mba then pay emi for next 2-3 year of mba. really confused. what should i do?

    • Mayank, with a 96%ile in CAT you do not need to quit your job for SSC CGL preparation. The preparation for CAT and CGL is similar to the extent of 70-75% and except for a couple of topics in QA and Reasoning yo would have covered everything. GK is the only portion where you will need an extensive preparation but for that you need to spend about 30-45 minutes every day. For the other three sections you need to focus on practice and can consider enrolling for the our online programs – SSC Test Series and Test Gym, please click here for the details.

  79. Hi GP,

I have cleared SSC CGL 2013 securing 20 marks above cut offs and now waiting for interview call and I have also appeared in CAT 2014 where CL percentile predictor is predicting that I may get 99 %ile which can help me get into a reputed MBA institute. I have a pretty good academic record as more than 80% in both 10th and 12th and in B. Tech too. I have a work experience of more than 2 years.
What should I choose and if I opt for MBA what should be the points to keep in mind if I get call from multiple good institutes? I was shortlisted for IIM Kashipur in 2012 but I didn’t join it as I thought it was a new IIM and thought of trying again with some work ex. So please tell me also what are your views on joining a new IIM. And yes the biggest question for me is still MBA or SSC Job.

    • Priyanshu, to me MBA Vs SSC is a function of the institute where you get a final call. If it is among the top 25 then it should be MBA else it should be SSC with a retake of CAT/XAT. New IIMs will be better than SSC.
At present just focus on doing well in the remaining MBA entrances, in the SSC interview and in the MBA interviews and let us discuss this once you have the final calls.

  80. Hello GK,i have scored 77% in ssc,54% in hsc and 79% in graduation.my is question is:will my 12th percent affect my interview in IBPS,SBI,CGL? Thank you 🙂 and be blessed. 😀

    • Akshay, it will be questioned in the interview but will not lead to rejection. You may be asked to explain the reason for these poor marks.

  81. sir,
i m an mba and qualified net examination in management subject .
after that i got good environment for ssc preparation ( good faculty etc. ) almost 2 years i prepared for ssc cgl and i cleared tier 1 and in tier 2 my result is not positive due to certain reasons
now i m confused what to do shall i go for teaching career or prepare for competative examination.

    • Nikhil,
Any career decision should depend on your interest in the area…both are rewarding options.
Teaching is a passion …do you have the aptitude and the attitude for it….working with students for eternity ….If yes become a teacher.
Otherwise get into government services via competitive exams
      All the Best !!

  82. Sir, does ssc ask NOC from previous employer at the time of cgl interview???
There was nothing mentioned about NOC in the notification and so I didnt inform my employee(a PSU).So if NOC needed,my employer will not issue it,since I hav not informed them…please guide me Sir

    • Dear Dhruv,
If you have mentioned about your present employer in the SSC application form, then ‘yes’ SSC will ask for the NOC form. Also, even if you have mentioned in the Bio-Data form, which you have to carry during the interview process, then also SSC will ask for NOC form. Now, if you have not mentioned it anywhere then it will be a problem for you in future, when you get selected.
So, the best possible solution is to mention the details of your present employer in the Bio-data form if not given in the application form and try your best to get the NOC from your present employer because without the NOC/relieving letter of your present employer, you will not be allowed to join any government job.

      Wish you all the luck!!

  83. Dear Sir, I gave CGL 2014 on 19th Oct morning shift. I am getting only 97-99 marks according to various answer keys. My target was assistant in CSS or Assistant in railways. But after seeing all the papers I am pretty confused with the probable cutoff for UR category. I have also applied for Tax assistant in CBEC and CBDT. I think I will clear this non-interview posts tier 1 cutoff as they have less cut off no. than interview posts. So my question is, suppose I am clearing Tax assistant cut off in tier 1 and in Tier 2 I am fetching good marks so that my over all marks(Tier 1 + Tier 2) exceeds 400. In that case would I qualify for interview posts or I can only opt for Tax assistant posts only?????? …………..and my another question is how much chances are their for me to clear the cut offs of Tier 1(2014) for interview posts in UR category?????

    • Dear Krishanu,
First of all, let me tell you that there are healthy chances that you will clear the cut-off for the interview posts.
Second, if unfortunately you are unable to get into the List-I (interview post) then in that case, you will not be considered for the interview in future even if you are able to score good marks in Tier-II and score above 400.

      Wish you all the luck!!!

      • Thanks Team for your concern.
I have one more query. Presently I am residing in kolkata and working in an MNC. I want to take the mock test series(offline) of CL(weekends preferable). But when I searched for CL branches in Kolkata it seems like no branch in Kolkata offers this course. So, How would I be able join such course???

  84. sir ,in this article ,you mentioned one acquaintance of yours from DCE ,MR. rajat sen and explained how he took up a cgl job .And this year ,a rajat Sen from dce has cleared civils matching same description.my goals are almost similar ,to be in civil society but looking at cgl as backup.and I’ve been a ex CL student .sir can you confirm its that rajat sen and enlighten me more about him ..? thanks

    • Anuj,
Yes, he is same Rajat Sen. A passout from DCE, then Income tax officer through SSC CGL and now succeeded in UPSC CSE 2013.

    • Rahul,
Expected vacancies for SSC CGL 2015 will be around 20000 plus. It has been a trend by SSC that it fills almost 20000 vacancies through CGL exam each year.

  85. Hello Sir, I hav been wrking wid an IT mnc since 3.8 years, getting 5 LPA package.I hav scored 421 marks out of 600. UR category. Which posts can i expect wid this score (assuming avg. marks in intrvw) and wat should be my post pref. And, would it be better to leave the current job for govt. job?? pls reply sir. I am waiting…
    Thanks a lot sir!!

    • Mukesh,
In which exam you have scored 421 out of 600?
Please tell the name of examination, batch etc. On that basis only we can predict your chances of getting posts. Moreover, it depends on your preference too.

  86. Sir,I am a final year student will complete my graduation in 2015 jume.I want to apply for CGL in 2015.
Sir,It is possible to apply. As CGL Tier 1 will befoe graduation and CGL tier 2 exam will be after my completion of graduation.Sir while filling the form can I write my Completed graduate ? as CGL process take almost a year to complete.

    • Sidhanshu, you have to be a graduate at the time of applying for the CGL Exam hence you will be able to apply only for 2016.

  87. sir, i got a total of 380+ in ssc cgl 2013 re, plz tell me
    1)the chances of interview post
    2)job profile possible
    3)salary expected

    • Neha,
Be hopeful for some low merit interview posts.
All the bets for forthcoming CGL. Possible job profile (subject to your qualification) are Assistant in different Departments, Miniseries, Central Secretariat, Intelligence Bureau etc. with salary grade pay of Rs. 4200- 4600.

  88. sir, my problem is very complicated. i am having problem of speech impairement which is more than 40% required to be given PWD reservation quota. does this problem get covered under hearing impairement. since there are three category for PWD reservation:-
    1.physiacal handicaped

  89. dear sir

how long will it take for the whole procedure of ssccgl to complete from day of tier1 exam to final joining.

    • Gaurav,
The notification is expected in January 2015. The tentative date of examination will be in month of April 2015 or May 2015. But, these are based on the expectations and may vary asaw well.

      • YES I know that but i want to know how much time does the whole procedure take from tier1 ,tier 2, gdpi to final joining .

        • Gaurav
The procedure of SSC CGL exam (from date of tier – I exam to final joining) takes almost one whole year. For example, SSC CGL, 2015 if held in April/May 2015, will be completed by the mid of 2016.

  90. Dear sir,
I’m BE Mech (passout year 2008) working wd reliance as a Manager with moderate package, married n have baby.
Should I appear for SSC CGL?
I dnt hv idea about govt jobs.
Is it better than my current job?
I cant do post-graduation,m damn confused.
    Pl guide me forward path.
    Thanks & regards.

    • Lilesh,
SSC CGL provides an opportunity for Group B services in central government. The eligibility for a good number posts is Graduate with age of 18 – 27 years, though for some posts the age cap is thirty years too. Moreover, it provides a stable and secure job with a great sense of social security. Paid salary is also lucrative.
So, you can try for SSC CGL 2015 for which the notification is expected in January 2015.
      All the best.

    • Rahul,
SSC CGL 2015 will be notified in January 2015, the expected vaccines may be 20,000 +.
The tentative time of imagination will be April/May 2015.

  91. Namaste Sir,

Sir, my birth date is 29/07/1987, my doubt is am i eligible for SSC CGL 2015??
because i am 27 rite now, and vl be 27 years and 6 months by january 2015, so would i be eligible for CGL 2015.
this question is troubling me a lot, and i am not able to concentrate on studies properly. I am preparing for the competition exams, but SSC is my prime target. But since dis doubt is hovering over me, i have lost my focus. I am going to appear in CGL 2014 but i am not very well prepared, thats why i am lookinng forward for CGL 2015.

i have done MBA and also have an experience of 2.5 years, but now i want to work in Government sector. Please guide me sir, being from general category, which exams i shud focus, i have filled all exams, but pls help me with choices i have.

    • Pranshu,
The age limit for the posts of Inspector of different department is 18 – 27 year. For example, for SSC CGL 2015, must have been born not earlier than 02.01.1988 and
not later than 01.01.1997. Though, the age limit for Assistant/Sub Inspector in CBI has been increased up to thirty years. Hence you are eligible for Assistant/Sub Inspector in CBI, which will be filled by SSC CGL 2015.

  92. Hi sir,
I am B.E (ECE), working for TCS , have 2 yrs of IT experience,
I had ideas of settling n software industry only.. so dint bother about any exams… but now i have urge to get into upsc exams…. but as per family and financial conditions i cant afford to leave job and study.. so i taught of getting into ssc cgl and simultaneously prepare for upsc… my own sister (sibling) is also prepearing for upsc in delhi.. so i think i can prepare well… i want clear idea about…
    1) how much time ssc cgl will take to give appointment from the date of exam tier1??
bcz as am already 24 i cannot afford too much time with ssc cgl only.
    2) am confused about the cash in hand that an good post of ssc cgl would get??? bcz few blogs say its 229-35 and few say 44-45..
    3) it is a clerical job?? bcz some blog which give job description .. says that its all clerical job and few blogs says its good respected job…
    4) the posts are they respected well in society??
i kind ly request you to guide me on this..
    thanks in advance

    • Harsi,
I address your queries one by one.
      1) In general, the calender of SSC CGL of a given year completes within/after one year. For example, if you take SSC CGL 2015, it would complete by the mid of 2016.
      2) SSC CGL provides Group B jobs in central government (inspectors in some dept. in different miniseries, intelligence bureau, central secretariat etc.) with pretty chances of further promotions. Paid salary is also lucrative (the cash in hand varies from Rs. 30,000 – 45,000).
      3) SSC CGL recruits for Group B ranks, while SSC CHSL is for clerical recruitment.
      4) Many posts allotted in metro cities only and you can earn prestige and honor while serving fir the nation. Apart from it, you can take weekend classes for UPSC Civil Service Examination and for CSAT (UPSC CSP) too.
      All the best.

  93. is there any differences between SSC CGL JOBS & PRASAR BHARATI PROGRAMME EXECUTIVE & TRANSMISSION EXECUTIVE regarding salary & other allowances/facility/house/medical etc.in grade pay 4600 & 4200?
what are better aspects in PB or SSC CGL jobs?
    future aspects? promotion etc.
if any candidate already selected for PB in 4600 GP, as PREX/TREX. Is is better to leave for SSC CGL,If selected?
    kindly compare?

    • Sandeep,
I address your queries one by one.

      1) Though SSC CGL and the jobs mentioned by you have similar pay band/scale but, nevertheless; SSC CGL is far better than Prasar Bharti. AS SSC CGL has better exposure, scope and opportunity for promotion, one can switch from PREX/TREX.
      2) SSC CGL provides Group B jobs in central government (inspectors in some dept., in different miniseries, intelligence bureau, central secretariat etc.) with pretty chances of further promotions. Paid salary is also lucrative (the cash in hand varies from Rs. 30,000 – 45,000).Many posts allotted in metro cities only and you can earn prestige and honor while serving fir the nation. Apart from it, you can take weekend classes for UPSC Civil Service Examination and for CSAT (UPSC CSP) too.
      All the best.

  94. Sir,
My date of birth is 10/04/1987 and I completed my graduation in 2008. I belong to the OBC category but don’t have the certificate( very soon going to apply for it). My academic qualification:1) Secondary (80%); 2)Higher Secondary (about 69%); 3) Graduation (53% in English Honors). Till date I have been working different part time and private company jobs. Many of my close friends went for the state government jobs and are now well settled at least in terms of career, but I am still struggling. After wasting too much time, now I want to crack a good government job exam(preferably central govt. one). Is SSC CGL right option for me? Or what about IBPS and/or SBI PO?Please give me a good guidance and make me grateful to you for ever.
    With regards,
    Amar

    • Dear Amar,

All of these are good options. In order to maximize your chances, you should appear for each of these exams, provided you are eligible for these. As far as these jobs are concerned, SBI PO is definitely a better option than IBPS PO. As far as SSC CGL is concerned, a good job through this may be better than even an SBI PO. But a lower ranked job through SSC CGL may not be very attractive.

      • Thank you very much Sir for your valuable advice.
The age limit in IBPS and SBI PO exams being 30 years, I am eligible for the post. And according to the SSC CGL 2014 notification(corringendum), the upper age limit for AEO and SI in CBI posts was 30 years. Besides, if I can get the OBC certificate on time, I will be entitled to an age relaxation of 3 years and I’ll be eligible for all SSC posts. Now my questions are:
        1) Which of the exams under discussion is the toughest one to crack?
        2) Are AEO and SI in CBI posts good enough in terms of salary and others?
        3) Which are the most competitive posts in SSC (i.e. most candidates aspire for)?
        4) What would be the inhand salary of an IBPS and SBI PO in rural posting?
        5) How many tentative years might it take to become a Branch Manager after joining?
6 I have come to know that a PO might be terminated if he/she fails to achieve the given target during his probation period. Is it true? Please explain it.

        Waiting for your hearty guideline.
        With due respect.
        Amar

        • Amar,
I am addressing your queries one by one.
          1) When we compare POs of IBPS/SBI and SSC CGL, we find that one has pretty chances to be select in SSC CGL. There are many reasons. One, SSC CGL (Tier – I & II) have no sectional cut-offs. Two, the number of vacancies to be filled through SSC CGL are more than IBPS/SBI PO. Thirdly, the difficulty level of POs of IBPS/SBI is more than the difficulty level of SSC CGL exam.
          2) AEO and SI in CBI posts also have handsome scale and facilities.
          3) Generally, the posts for inspectors of Central Excise and Customs and of Income tax have greater preferences eventually making them tougher.
          4) The cash in hand salary of an SBI/IBPS PO posted in a rural rear is around 30,000.
          5) After completing probation, an officer can be appointed as a branch manager at any time. It depends upon the branch, need of the organization and city/place of the posting.
          6) Its wrong, during probation period, there is no defined or calculated target for an officer. Though he/she must qualify some internal examinations.

    • Dear Avinash,
No, you will not be eligible for the CGL 2015 exam. SSC typically requires that you must have completed your graduation by January 1 of the year in which the exam is being conducted.

  95. DEAR SIR
AS I HAD SEEN NOTICE FOR IPBS PO EXAM AND CAME ACROSS A NOTIFICATION THAT A CANDIDATE MUST HAVE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AND MUST HAVE LEARN THAT SUBJECT UPTO XTH CLASS.. FOR EG. I BELONG TO HARYANA AND HINDI MUST BE A LOCAL LANGUAGE AND I HAD SANSKRIT IN MY 10TH CLASS NOT HINDI. SO IF I CLEARED THE EXAM I WILL BE RULED OUT BY BANKS AT THE TIME OF INTRVIEW. SO PLEASE HELP ME WHAT TO DO…

    THANKS

    • Dear Risabh,

Normally, there is no such condition attached for Bank PO posts. However, if you have come across such a notification, then the best thing to do would be to contact the exam conducting body and seek their clarification regarding the same.

  96. Sir, i cleared ssc cgl when i was 21 and joined when i turned 22 years..i am 23 now.. would it be a better thing to do if i quit this job and go for GRE or take admission in colleges like SIBM, SCMHRD and new IIMs.. i got calls from sibm and scmhrd but could not convert. i have no interest in GK so UPSC is out of the question for me. i am Btech with not so good academics.. i am really confused..
    please help sir..

    • Dear Anuj,

SIBM or the new IIMs will be a decent option for you. Work hard and try to secure admission to one of these. Institutes that accept GRE score would typically look for at least three years of work-experience.

  97. Sir,
Please tell me about how much time taken by SSC after Tier – II exam regarding Recruitment.

    Please Reply.

  98. Hi GP Sir,
I have been a great follower of your posts.Need one advice from your end.Sir I have cleared IBPS PO and have been selected for Bank of Baroda in Scale 1.I am also simultaneously preparing for CGL-2014.
    I have 2 queries:
1)I am joining BOB, what are the future prospects of a PO to climb up the corporate ladder.Tentatively how much time?
2)I have OBC, so for CGL-2014 what will be safe score for me to get a job in Income Tax or Excise. What should i target for out of 600, so that interview has less dependency.
    Hoping for a reply.

    Regards,
    Sambit.

    • Dear Sambit,

      1. There are huge opportunities in the banking sector today, especially for POs. Various banks have relaxed the criteria for promotions and accelerated promotions due to the following two reasons:
      (a) PSBs are on an expansion spree.
      (b) More than half of the banking sector staff is set to retire in the next 5 years.

      2. SSC CGL Tier I + Tier II: Assuming that you will get at least 30-35 marks in interview, you should target around 410+ (out of 600) in order to be very sure of your selection.

      • Thank You GP Sir,
For your reply.Just to clarify you meant 410+(out of 600) for OBC candidate right?Or this is enough for general cut off too.

        • Dear Sambit,

You had asked for safe marks in Tier I+II so that you do not have to bother about the interview at all. For OBC candidates, the cutoff (out of 700 marks for interview-based posts) is likely to be in the range of 445+. Assuming that in the worst case you would still get around 30-35 marks in the interview, you should target 410+ in Tier I + II to be very confident of getting selected for the interview posts.

  99. What would happen if I get the required marks for Interview post jobs ( ie. Income Tax or CBI inspector ) in TIER 1 + TIER 2 (suppose I get 500 marks ), but could not clear the interview or got the less marks in interview ??

Will I be considered for the Interview post jobs (Group 2 Jobs) or I get clerical jobs (Group 3 jobs) ??

    • Dear Deepak,

In case you score less in your interview, you will still be eligible for non-interview + interview jobs. Even if you are not selected for the post that you have specifically chosen, you will still be considered for other posts.

  100. Does the posts covered under SSC CGL such as assistant in CSS,CVC etc are clerical posts or officer post because probably the grade pay of the officers are 5400 which is received by SO after 8-9yrs of service whereas assistant gets grade pay of 4600,Though I know the nature of the work of Asst in CSS is more of higher level clerk but is the post non gazetted officer?

  101. Sir I did not download my online application form of SSC CGL 2014. I want to know if that would be a problem at the time of interview? Please reply.

  102. Hello Sir,
I just completed my b.tech (ECE) from a respected college.I do not have any job as of now and i don’t have interest in IT job either.I am interested in govt jobs. And i can drop for 1 year also.Should i prepare for SSC or IES?
if i prepare for IES,would it be feasible for me to prepare for SSC as well simultaneously?if i don’t clear any of the exam what are my backup options in both SSC and IES?
As SSC 2013 has been cancelled and SSc 2015 is in contention so is it safe to drop a year for SSC or should i start looking for a job?PLease reply asap as i am confused and time is running out of my hands.

    • Himanshu, while you can prepare for SSC, given that the 2013 process is still on and 2014 is yet to be conducted it will be prudent to consider Banking along with SSC. To the best of my knowledge IES preparation is different from that of SSC you will need to do some extra preparation for it. Since you are keen on Govt jobs suggest that you prepare for IES and when the notification comes for SSC apply for it.

  103. ur article is really motivational….. i wud lyk 2 congratulate u fr dis n i m feelin proud fr u. keep goin the way u r goin…… thnx n regards…..

  104. Hello Sir, I am B Tech fresher… I’m thinking of preparing for CAT14 exam…..and after that crack SSC CGL….Is it a right decision….?? Also I wanna ask that can I do MBA after some experience in SSC CGL…. Is this experience worth for best B Schools in India….

    • Rajnish, this is fine and you can go for MBA after a couple of years in SSC also. My suggestion is to also consider taking the IBPS/SBI PO exams.

      • Sir, ur awesome. I’ve been following ur blog diligently & hv found u giving excellent advice to us students.
Sir, I’ve been selected in PNB PO through IBPS-III. Now, which exams should I give? I’m thinking of SSC(Only top 3 posts), RBI Gr-B & of course IAS. Is it the right plan?

Also, Is it worth giving RBI Asst exam? Ur help will be utterly helpful to me. Thnx in adv.!!

        • Amarjeet, thanks for your kind words.
Congratulations on your PNB PO selection. Your plan of SSC/RBI/Civil Services is fine and you can prepare for and take all the papers parallelly.
RBI Assistant exam does not appear to be better than PNB PO.

  105. Hi Sir,

I am a B.tech 2012 Passout . I prepared for SSC-CGL 2013 and was scoring nearly 475 , which could have fetched me a pretty decent post. I have inclination towards SSC as of now. But due to the leak debacle I gave MBA exams, and converted IIFT – D , sir my heart lies in SSC, but everyone i have inquired asked me to join IIFT, in retest i am scoring good in Prelims, sir will you advice me on continuing my job and prepairing for SSC-CGL or going for IIFT. Is IIFT in Top 10 B schools of India.

    PLEASE HELP

    • Rahul, IIFT Delhi should be preferred over SSC. If you are keen on joining the Government then go for Civil Service Exam after IIFT.

    • Hello Prince,
You don’t have to worry about losing the application form as you can obtain your admit card through the SSC website via your registration number and date of birth.

      All the best!

  106. sir please tell me
    about the nature of job
    in income tax
    inspector, central
    excise,assistant
    incss,ib, ministry of
    railway & cvc and
    it’s postings &
    promotions. IS it
    involves all india
    postings.I want to
    prepare for IAS in
    Delhi so
    please tell in which
    post can I prepare for
    IAS Exam in Delhi. and
    which post will give me
    more time
    to prepare for IAS
    Exam.Please help
    me because it’s the
    question of my career.

    • Mohit,
SSC recruits all non-Gazetted Group – B posts in the various Ministries/Departments of the Central Government and their attached and subordinate officers. There are good chances of promotions too. All the posts mentioned by you are mostly related with official attachments and in Delhi itself. Moreover, the office working hours are Mon – Fri 10:0) am to 05:00 pm. So, you can prepare well for UPSC Civil Services Examination too.

  107. i cleared btech in 2014 (this year). i want to go for ssc as i dont want to join BPO’s as i m placed in those companies.i didn’t opted for MBA (neither prepared nor appeared in exam CAT/MAT). is it good to go for ssc as this seems best option for me right now. when to start preparation.
    do reply soon.
    thanks
    Satyajeet

    • Satyajeet, SSC is a good option but has been having issues for the last couple of years. The 2013 paper is being conducted again and one does not know when the 2014 paper will be conducted. 2015 is still not in contention. My suggestion is to accept one of job offers and start preparing for both bank and ssc exams.

  108. HELLO SIR
my case is very complicated so plz help me out.
I got compartment in physics in class 12 from cbse board in the year 2009 but failed to appear in compartment exams that year. I suffered from severe depression n it took me a long time to overcome this situation, almost 4 years. In 2013, i applied for class 12 from up board as a private candidate n got successful in the results announced this month.
now i want to become ITO. While i do realise that a lot of time is wasted, and i will only be able to apply for ssc CGL in the year 2018( after graduation). but the irony is that in 2018 my age will be exactly 27 years n since m a general candidate, its not possible to get age relaxation. so kindly guide should i go for it n take the chance ? also tell how many attempts can one make in SSC CGL ? PLZ HELP ME OUT. u can also drop ur reply in my email- prince26.7.1991@gmail.com. kindly reply ASAP.

    • Prince, the right approach will be to appear for the lower level exam (Combined Higher Secondary Level exam) join the department and get promoted by giving departmental exams. You should also take the other Clerical exams for which the qualifying criteria is class XII.
In any case do continue with your graduation even if you get a job.

  109. Sir,
I have completed my B.E this year and i have been selected in “accenture” and my GATE score is 28 but i dont want to do mtech from any private college…plz suggest that wheather i should take a drop of 1 year preparing for GATE or join accenture and simultaneously prepare for SSC CGL because i am more intrested in govt job.

    • Amar, my suggestion is to join Accenture and prepare for GATE/SSC-CGLE simultaneously. I am not in favour of dropping a year.

  110. Sir,

I am a Masters degree holder in Electronics and currently hold a private job in IT company.
I want to know if this Masters degree would be helpful in any way in my career If I can get a job through SSC CGL?

    • Sonali, in Govt jobs every qualification is helpful and your Masters degree could lead to better opportunities or promotions or increments.

  111. Hi
I have been working in tcs for 1.7 years and getting just 26kpm when i got released from my project , i started preparing for ssc cgl exam but the exam date has been postpond and my hr is forcing me to take the project , i am totally confused whether to leave the job or to continue the preparation with job but i am not getting enough time to study.can you please suggest me …….i dont have any interest in it sector bt i dont have any option ryt now………so please suggest me is it worth to leave tcs for ssc cgl prepn. ?(done btech in electrical engineering) and if i leave tcs ryt now will this experience be counted if i go for mba if not selected in ssc cgl ?…..plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz everyone invited to suggest

    • Murdad, I do not think you need to quit you job for SSC or Bank PO preparation. My suggestion is continue with your job (take the project) and prepare simultaneously. The SSC process is long drawn and you could be unnecessarily jobless for some time. For MBA your current experience will be counted.

  112. hi sir,
sir after reading this article I was very upset because I dint fill ssc cgl form this year but after some time i came to know that ssc cgl 2013 has cancelled (which I filled in 2013 ) and will held again on 27 april so quickly enrolled for ssc test series from CL but what I saw that there is no mock available till date. what to do sir I am very confused?

  113. sir,
I have got joining letter for Preventive officer(customs inspector),CGL 2012, yesterday ,i am in a fix whether the work ex gained here will negatively affect my post mba jobs .I scored 90 percentile in CAT 96.78 in XAT(Rejected for xlri) And 49.76 in IIFT(very low waitlist) SNAP 99.82 (converted SIBM-P but didn’t paid the fees).I want to go for Mba from top 10 college hence want to try CAT 2014 .shall i leave my current IT job salry 27k pm and join customs ..please guide me.I have workex of 15 months till date

    • Amit, I don’t think that Preventive Officer Customs will impact you negatively for post MBA placements however the question you need to ask yourself is: if unfortunately MBA does not happen then what would you prefer a career in IT or in the Customs department? If the answer is customs then go ahead and join it and if the answer is IT then continue with your current job.

  114. ssb(service selection board) recruits candidates for army.yes,it also recruits engineers.if u hv completed b.tech u can apply for tgc(technical graduate scheme) otherwise for cds.for more info logon to official site of army i.e joinindianarmy.nic.in

  115. Sir, i Got PUNJAB NATIONAL BANK (PNB) probationary officer (PO) job through IBPS PO-III. PNB bond period is 3 years. bond amount is 2 lakhs. I applied for ssc cgl 2014. Does bond amt carry forward to new one ( of one is switching from pne psu unit to another psu unit). Sbi PO 2014 notification also came. shall i write the exam ( i am quite worried about bond amount & No objection certification issues .Also can we get no objection certicate (NOC) with out any issues . ( It is compulsory to submit NOC while attending Public sector unit interviews. Guide me on this issue. Thanks in advance.

    • Srinivasan, while each bank is an independent entity and bond amount cannot be transferred since both SBI and PNB are Public Sector units there may be a provision and you will have to check up with the HR department of PNB for the same. Have you joined PNB? If not then you do not need an NOC for SBI.

  116. sir, i am currently in 3rd year doing b.tech , i want to know when the SSC CGL 2015 exam will occur and since my degree will complete in june 2015 so can i give SSC CGL 2015 ?
    thanks !

    • Deepak, SSC CGL is held in April and since you have to ba graduate at the time of applying you will not be eligible for 2015.

  117. Sir,
Now that i have ruined an year over a meager result of CAT, I have no option but to move ahead.
I have no inclination towards working in Govt. sector and wish to give CAT another shot next year. I have picked up a job at a coaching institute as a faculty. Also, I have heard that teaching does not count as experience for MBA. Is it true?
Would you suggest me to prepare for SSC or other PSUs or should I hang in with this job and begin preparing for CAT next?
Does SSC has some sort of bond or service agreement?
    Thank you.

    • Varun, if you are confident of improving your performance in retake of CAT/XAT then go ahead with your job as English faculty at a coaching institute. This work experience will be counted by MBA institutes. I will still suggest that you take SSC and Bank papers also as these will be your back up options.

  118. Sir,
I prepared for CAT and ended up with a percentile of 85 in 2012.That year I gave SSC CGL exam also and got the post of Inspector Central Excise.I have joined at this post. But I have realised over here that government does pay enough money to lead a healthy Family Life.Bachelor’s do well in this pay.Why are you so bright about SSC CGL.
And yes I have given CGL 2013 also and Am scoring 465-470 out of 600.But I want to know why are you saying CGL a good opportunity???

    • Vibhu, with average scores in CAT/XAT students are left with the option of choosing not so good colleges and consequently they don’t get the kind of profiles or salary they were looking for after MBA. SSC is a decent back-up option for graduates who couldn’t perform well in MBA entrance exams.

  119. Dear Sir,

I am expecting a score of about 100+ marks in ATMA. How much will this come up to in terms of percentile ? Which all colleges should i fill it up with this score ?

    • Prateek, 100+ marks should fetch you more than 90 percentile. However, it can’t be commented upon precisely as the paper was relatively easier.

  120. Sir,
I am a final year B.tech student and will be graduating on June’14.Can i give ssc cgl this year?I will surely receive my graduation certificate when the results of ssc will be declared.I am a cl student also.

  121. Hello Sir,My question is that how does one justify his low academics performance given the fact that if one does not have any ECAs as such ?

  122. i hav finished my degree.but not have any work experience.what should i put on filling my form in details of wrk experience??

  123. Sir, till when IBPS PO, SBI PO and RBI notifications are expected this year?

And does SSC CGL notification comes out in Jan every year?

    • Ibad,
Notification for IBPS PO is expected in July-August 2014 but for RBI and SBI PO we can not say any thing in advance. AS for as SSC CGL is concerned, generally the notification comes in January every year.

  124. Dear Sir,
What preferences should one give as in the list for SSC posts (officer cadre B grade) with respect to a decent in-hand salary & fixed working time slot ?
I know it depends upon individual but still your preference list would help a lot of students here.
    thankyou

    • Prateek,
Some preferences could be listed as:
      1. Inspector in Income Tax
      2. Inspector in Central Excise
      3. Inspector (Examiner) in Central Excise
      4. Inspector (Preventive Officer)
      5. Assistant Enforcement Officer

  125. Hi Sir,
I am appearing SSC CGL for the first time, so can you please tell me a rough figure about the CUT-OFF for tier 1 and tier-2 separately?
Is there any sectional cutoff also?

    • Ujjwal,
SSC CGL (Tier-I) 2013 Cutoffs marks (out of 400) were as following:

      General Category- 96
      OBC – 81.50
      SC – 64
      ST – 62

For more details you can log in to http://www.careerlauncher.com/ssc, from there you can download the SSC brochure which gives you all information about SSC.

  126. Dear GP Sir,

Do all the posts that are to be filled by SSC CGL fall in the same pay scale range or they differ…Kindly throw some light on the Min and Max of gross salaries of various kinds of posts that are to be filled by SSC CGL..

  127. Hello Sir
I find their are 2 parts of registration
Please guide as to what they are
Is it registration for both the tiers??

    also it mentions
    Preference for Posts, is to
    be indicated in the application.

To be selected for a post in central ministries, SSC CGL is suitable platform. ON the basis of SSC CGL, different types of posts are filled. Some of them are
      1. Inspector in Income Tax
      2. Inspector in Central Excise
      3. Inspector (Examiner) in Central Excise
      4. Inspector (Preventive Officer)
      5. Assistant Enforcement Officer
Apart from it, there are some other posts which are filled by Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat.

  130. Hello Sir,I am aiming JBIMS through CET and ATMA.Can you please tell me how many marks would be required(out of 180) in ATMA for JB ?

    • S, for JBIMS you should be among the toppers of the test. Though the score is in terms of percentile but 120 correct questions out of total 180 should suffice.

  131. Sir this is off the topic (I didnt get any reply on the previous post)
My CAT OA 96.2 and XAT OA 94.62…..I have applied for SPJain, are there any chances? Thanks in advance!

  132. sir i m a final year student..my exam schedule is out..my last paper is scheduled on 22 april..which is before the exam..does this makes me eligible for the exam??

    • Dileep, All India CGL mock was held on 25th Jaunuary. If you a CL student, you can collect the copy of the paper from the your CL centre.

  133. Hi sir
How should we prepare for GK section of the tier 1 exam. Sir aren’t the final year students eligible to appear for tier-1 exam.
Moreover, the static or dynamic, which amongst the two constitutes the major part.

Sir for CAT’14, people are advising me to solve “Quantum cat by sarvesh kr verma” as I have already solved arun sharma. The reason being, all are commenting, “its better to solve a book completely than to confine to a particular material.”:

If this is the then please suggest books for VA and DI

  134. Sir,
I am a final year engineering student, can I give the test just to have a feel of the exam. Will they bar me from appearing next year if they come to know that I am a final year student?
    CAT 96.52 (quant-98.99, VA-78.62)
Please tell me which IITs to apply to, that don’t consider sectional cutoffs?

    • Kuvam, they wouldn’t bar you for doing so. IIT-K and R are possible at your CAT score as they have low sectional cut-offs.

  135. Dear Sir,
I have tried contacting Cl offices but I’m not able to know about the timings of the test. Could you please tell abt the schedule of the test?

  136. at cat 93% , I am getting calls from IMT, IMI, TAPMI …can you suggest if I should go for CGL? 3 yr wok ex by June 2014. Regards.

    • Hiii Raghu, the tentative vacancies could be around 15,000 which includes the interview(3385) as well as non-interview posts(11500).

  137. Thank you so much.Sir,i must admit that u can comprehend the need of the students and u r doing a wonderful job through posts like this.

  138. SIR I HAVE BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR IBS BY CLEARING IBSAT 2013 . I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU HOW IS IBS AND WHAT SHOULD BE MY CAMPUS PREFRENCES.
    PLS REPLY.
    THANK YOU

  139. Hi GP sir ,

I don’t have job as of now and have performed rather badly in all my MBA exams . ( Resigned from Infosys and don’t wanna do any more coding – cannot tolerate it anymore – 2011 pass-out from IIIT ) But I swear that my preparation was very good , just coudn’t convert into results . On the basis of proctored mocks , CL predictor predicted 97 as my most likely percentile . Please tell me what other government forms I can fill on the basis of CAT preparation . I mean SSC , IBPS etc . As of now please tell me what all government exams I can write , later if you decide to write separate blog posts on that too , it will simply be great .

    Thanks and regards,
    Rahul

    • Pakshaal, through SSC CGL exam you get recruited into different departments of the central government as Income-Tax, IB, Excise and others.
SSB (Services Selection Board) is the body that takes the interviews of candidates aspiring for the Armed Forces of India.
Also, SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) is a para-military force of our country which has all together different recruitment process.

      • thank you. These type of articles open new vistas of career opportunities . Is SSC and SSB taken for engineering departments. For example does SSB considered for engineer posts in armed forces? And SSC for any engineering departments in government agencies?

  140. Good Take Sir

But I doubt the credibility of SSC(CGL)…..
what u mention here I did the same thing previous year and appeared for MBA entrance exams and gave SSC(CGL) as an option prepared diligently for it and hope to secure 445 marks(Tier 1&2)…….
But as per the recent events there is a Stay Order on the Result and it is on the verge of Cancellation….
On MBA front I scored CAT 80.84, SNAP 97.5,XAT 90
My Dilemma is while preparing for SSC(CGL), I got interested in it and finally when I intend to join it, it’s going for cancellation.

    Regards
A CL student and GP Fan

    • Dear Rahul, SSC is a credible exam and in my opinion there will be delay in the results but it will not be cancelled, stay positive and best of luck!!

  141. Sir the Pay mentioned in the notification is very less compared to what u have stated. It says a grade pay of 4600. What exactly is that.
