CET GANGNAM STYLE

To set the record straight, the title only suggests that attempting the CET is like riding a horse – 200 questions in 150 minutes. It is like no other test. Though CET questions may be of much lower difficulty level than CAT, it is still a major challenge for even the best – doing well in CET requires one to be extremely alert and agile.

The Basics

The DTE, Maharashtra has mentioned that CET ‘14 is going to be online and its pattern is to be on the lines of the previous CET.

200 questions spread across Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning jumbled up together without any defined sections. So, you may find one question on Profit & Loss, followed by an RC passage and then a question on Syllogisms. Please read on!

The good news is that there is no negative marking in CET. However, you still have to solve a considerable number of questions to get a score of 140+. Do remember to mark every question since there is no negative marking.

Let us now understand the broad pattern of the test.

Quantitative Ability – Approx 50 questions

  • Problem Solving – around 20–25 questions
  • Data Interpretation – around 20 questions
  • Data Sufficiency – around 5-10 questions

Verbal Ability – Approx 50 questions

  • Reading Comprehension – around 15-20 questions
  • Grammar based questions – around 10-15 questions
  • Vocabulary based questions – around 10-15 questions
  • Parajumbles – around 5-10 questions

Logical Reasoning – Approx 100 questions

  • Analytical Reasoning – around 40 – 45 questions
  • Verbal Reasoning – around 40 – 45 questions
  • Visual Reasoning – around 30 questions

Topic-wise Details

Problem Solving: Most of these questions would be very basic. You would typically find a significant number of questions from topics like BODMAS, Approximations and Arithmetic. So, if you are starting your preparation today, then these should be the topics that you focus on first. In case you have already prepared for CAT, you will not face any problems in this section.

You must aim to attempt almost every question from this section.

Data Interpretation: In the CET, you will find all sorts of data sets–tables, pie-charts, line-graphs, etc. You would need to use your ‘approximation skills’ to handle these questions.

This again is a must do area and you must aim to attempt almost every question from this section as well.

Data Sufficiency: This section can be rather tricky. It will pose questions that are seemingly very easy but will trap you with the confusing options.

Consider this question:

Is n an integer?

(1)  √n is a natural number

(2)  n2 is a natural number

And the right answer is: Statement (1) is sufficient to answer the given question while Statement (2) is not.

Reading Comprehension: You will typically find a large passage with lots of questions – most of them being direct ones. This is an area where you should not use guesswork.

Grammar based questions: These questions test your knowledge of basic grammar. Relying solely on ‘gut-feel’ to answer questions on grammar will not be sufficient to score well in this section. Also, 30 days may notbe enough to make a dramatic improvement in this area. Be prudent and focus your preparation on other areas.

Vocabulary based questions: Either you know the answer or you don’t – that’s the story of this type of questions. You cannot wake up today and master the entire word-list. So, just hope that your reading habits will prove useful in this area.

Analytical Reasoning: You will encounter a plethora of questions from this section. These questions will be based on:

  • Arrangements & Grouping
  • Series and Sequence
  • Blood relations
  • Coding-decoding
  • Input-Output questions

Practice, practice and practice – through sustained practice, you will be able to handle these types of questions effectively. Beware of ‘speed-breakers’, especially in questions on sequences and series. If you are able to crack the logic in less than 30 seconds, mark the answer else, ‘guess’ and move on.

Consider the following series:

24, 81, 63, 26, 41, 28, 25, __

You won’t be able to crack it in less than 30 seconds. By the way the logic is 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128…. Did you get it? If not, don’t sweat.

Verbal Reasoning:  Another must attempt area – you can get high accuracy in these types of questions, provided you have sufficient practice. Questions in this section will be based on:

  • Syllogisms
  • Statement Assumptions
  • Statement Conclusions
  • Strong-Weak Arguments
  • Course of Action
  • Cause and Effect
  • Critical Reasoning

Understand the basics of each of these types of questions and you will be safe. Further, do note that you can achieve very high accuracy in these questions

Visual Reasoning:  CET is probably the only MBA entrance test that tests your visual reasoning skills also. This section is usually challenging. Out of the 30 questions from this area, if you are able to solve more than 60% of the questions correctly then it will be considered a very good attempt. However, please note that questions from this portion use a variety of logic – including counting, rotation, symmetry, and geometry. Practicing as many questions as possible is the only way to improve in this section.

The Broad Strategy:

A score of 140+ should be your target. In 150 minutes, try and solve 150 questions and ‘guess – mark’ the remaining 50. Probability suggests that you will get 10 out of these 50 guessed questions correct. The challenge is to get 130 questions correct out of 150.

Thus, both speed and accuracy are essential to do well in the CET.

CL provides 15 CET mocks. Solve each of them, learn from them and practice.

Happy Gangnam CET!

  31. i have score 63% in mba cet 2016, i want to persue my mba from mit college kothrud ,pune..so that i can get addmission der??

    • Devashish, you have a chance of making it to KJ Somaiya but Sydenham is likely to be difficult. The average salary at KJ Somaiya will be around Rs 9 lakh pa.

    I scored 76.49% in Mah Cet 2016.
    I belong to SC category.
I did Graduation from Mumbai University.

Which colleges will be best for me ?

    • Samiksha, as a Home University SC candidate you can get admission to JBIMS or Sydenham or KJ Somaiyya. In case these do not happen go for a retake of CAT and CET and target other top institutes that have reservation.

      • Home university means birth place _ Mumbai or graduation in Mumbai.my birth place is Mumbai ,I did graduation from NIT SURAT also I m SC category and scored 89.5 percentile in MH cet 2016 is there chance to get call from JBIMS

I have got 96.13 percentile in MH CET 2016 (Out of maharashtra) , I have 3 years of experience in TCS
Which college should I Apply for ?

    • Siddharth, as an OMS candidate you will not get any institute fitting your background. Suggest that you go for a retake CAT/XAT and also take GMAT to open the option of 1 year MBA program of ISB and top IIMs.

  35. Hello, I have scored 89.21%ile in MAH-CET, currently m working in CTS with CTC of 3.35L, which college will be best for me with this score in terms of placements??

If I opt to stay in job and do distance MBA will it be advantageous??

    Thanks in advance!!

    • Aniket, Distance MBA have not really picked up in India. While they offer a degree unfortunately they are unable to offer a career.
At 89%ile in CET you are unlikely to get any good institute and my suggestion is to continue with your job and go for a retake of CAT/XAT and other MBA entrances.

  36. Hello Sir

I am Outside MH applicant for MAH MBA 2016. My academics are: 10th – 91.2%, 12th- 81% and graduation – 7.96/10. I have work experience of 9 months- 4 in Infosys and 5 in XL Dynamics ( a US Mortgage Bank).

    I have 96.5 %ile (Score 721) in Dec MAT 2015 exam. I got 91.41%ile (Score 92 out of 200) in MAH MBA 2016.
I have already been offered a PGDM seat in ITM Kharghar in Navi Mumbai through MAT score. Is ITM Kharghar a good choice?

Also, I would like to get into good colleges from MAH MBA score. Is Welingkar, KJ Somaiya or other good institutes possible at this score?

Please reply soon since Welingkar last date is March 31.

    Thanks

    • Ankur, MAT unfortunately does not have any good institutes affiliated to it. As a OMS candidate you will not get any good college through MhCET at 91.41%ile. Given your work experience and academic record my suggestion is to avoid these institutes and go for a retake and ensure that you do take CAT/XAT/IIFT/SNAP/NMAT this time as almost all good institutes take score of some of these tests. Suggest that you start preparing for CAT 2016 immediately.

  37. Sir, I have converted ITM Navi mumbai financial market. My CMAT score is 171 and scored 92.16%tile. i m from M.P. I have already applied for SIESCOM and Welingkar. What are my chances to get a call from both the colleges. And should i apply for Syndenham?

  42. Hello sir, this is Sanket. I’ve 95.86 percentile in MAH-CET 2016. Do I stand a chance for SIES, DALMIA, WELINGKAR.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

    • Shashi, there are no decent institutes with CAT 72.65 CMAT 89.52. So it is suggested to re appear for these exams.

  47. Hi GP Sir,

My CMAT percentile is 99.95 with AIR 28 , Non Maharashtra(OMS), general candidate. Do I stand a chance for SIMSREE(MMS/PGDM), and KJ Somaiya. Is there any GDPI round also?

  48. MHCET MBA ALL INDIA MERIT NUMBER 71
Do i had any chance to get into simsree , kJ , Welingkar?
How is placement different for MMS and PGDM courses…
please suggest some good college ………..
converted in Chandragupt institute of mgmt, patna (avg 4.5lakh, fee 5.25 lakh)
Shall i go with chandragupt or mhcet mba colleges?

    • Shaswat, the placements of MMS and PGDM are similar.
While KJ Somaiya and SIMSREE are unlikely you have a chance of making it to the others. Apart from Welingkar you can consider SIES, Chetna, NL Dalmia and MET.

  49. Hi Sir,

I have got 94 percentile(128 Marks) in MAH CET, i have 71 % in 10th, 63% in 12th and 61% aggregate in B.E. . I am currently working for a package of 3.5 lpa in the IT industry from the last 22 months. Can i expect SIMSREE or KJ Somaiya at my score? Will welingkar be a good choice? I dream of getting into NMIMS Mumbai next year if i do not get SIMSREE or KJ. Is it appropriate to wait if i do not get them? are there any other colleges i should apply to?

    • Shahbaz, SIMSREE and KJ Somaiyya are not possible at a score of 94%ile. Application window of all good institutes is over and hence you should shift your focus on preparing for CAT’15 and other MBA entrances.

  50. Hello Sir,

I got 94%tile (128 marks) in MH-CET. I have already converted SIMS pune and have given 1st installment there. I have 2 years of exp , 71% in BE. Do I stand any chance of getting a better college through MH-CET now? And if yes then which colleges you think I have chance to get. I am good in GD-PI and open category student. Any pointer would be of great help SIR.

    • Umang, a better college than SIMS through CET is unlikely but do go for the CAP round and if you get KJ Somaiyya or Sydenham then you should drop SIMS.

      • Thanks for the reply Sir. Actually last date of applying for PGDM Welingkar is 31st March. Its not through CAP round. What I concluded from your reply (please correct me if I am wrong) is only better colleges (in my reach considering my score) than SIMS are Kj Somaiya and Sydenham. Welingkar is not a good option over SIMS. Right Sir?

Also please comment on how good is my decision to go for MBA from SIMS. I have 2 year of work Ex and currently drawing 5.2 Lakh/PA.

        • Omi, yes you have understood me correctly, Welingkar is below SIMS.
SIMS is a decent institute and can be considered favourably if you cannot go for a retake and have to do an MB this year itself. The average salary at SIMS would be in the region of Rs 7-7.5 lakh pa.

  51. Hi Sir, I have submitted JBIMS application for two programs MMS and MSc. I am OBC candidate and native to UP. I was not aware that OMS are considered as General candidates. I applied as OBC candidate.Later when I realised the mistake I mailed to JBIMS admission team and posted on their official pagalguy, but didn’t got any reply. Pls tell what I could do now, can it be changed during admission’s GDPI process . I don’t want my application to get rejected. please help.
    Regards,
    Shubhranshu

  52. Sir,My all india rank is 366(99.5 %tile).
In the year of 2012 CAP round one cut off was as following-
    jbims- 19 ( 18 seats)
    SIMSREE- 116 (18 seats)
    KJ- 173 ( 5 seats)
    Welingkar – 356 (18 seats)
and the CAP round 2 cut off with vacant seats were as follows-
    jbims- 20 (1 seat)
    simsree- 109 (5 seats)
    KJ – 200 (3 seats)
    Welingkar – 418 ( 8 seats )

Sir as this year cut off is expected to be lowered Should I put all 4 options in Form filling of cap round 1 or gamble and put only top 3 options to see if I get KJ in cap round 2?

    • Ravi, not a very good choice but acceptable. Where are you working, what is your role and what is your current salary?

      • Sir, i left my job last year due to some personal problems. I was employed as R &D executive and was drawing around 4 lpa. Plz guide.

    • Dear Manish,

IMT Hyderabad ranks among the top 90 b-schools in the country. Average placements at this b-school are in the range of Rs. 6 lakhs p.a. and its fees are Rs. 11 lakhs. Depending on your profile and scores, you may consider joining this b-school.

  53. Sir, can you plz tell me how is the PUMBA and what is the average pkg offered? I am with 3 yrs of exp. and would like to pursue low cost MBA. Plz reply.

    • Dear Ravi,

PUMBA ranks among the top 100 b-schools in the country. Average placements at PUMBA are believed to be in the range of Rs. 3 to 4 lakhs p.a. Considering your work experience, PUMBA is not advisable for you.

  54. Thanks for your reply sir. One more thing that I would like to know is that Does “All India Merit No.” mentioned in the provisional list includes each and every category i.e.’ HU, OHU, J &K, OMS??

      • Sir, final merit list is out and no separate list for OMS, its still only the ALL INDIA MERIT RANK and i think OMS candidates will be consider on this but HU ,OHU candidates are also given ALL INDIA ranks along with UNIVERSITY, STATE , CATEGORY ranks. So, one thing is clear that ALL INDIA rank includes everyone and my question what is the possibilty for KJ SOMAIYA ? Last year 173 rank is the cutoff while in 2012- 99 rank is the cut off? What to expect GP Sir?Another one down, i think.Plz rply

  55. My
    State General Merit No 6567
    University General Merit No 590
    State Category Merit No 712
    University Category Merit No 137
M a OBC reserved catagory and i have applied though catagory only

  56. Hello GP sir,
    My MH-CET score is 70.44%ile (76 marks)
    acad’s are
    10th 76%
    12th 71%
but my graduation score is very low on a border line of eligibility criteria of dte. cz i was doing CA CPT but couldnt crack IPCC and thn cz of health issues i couldnt concentrate much on B.com so my que. are;-
1.. according to my cet score (i knw its too bad but cant give retake 🙁 ) plz suggest me some good colleges in pune and mumbai i knw i should not think of top but at least somehow good.. m belong to obc catagory MH state candidate but OHU
2.. another one is.. will my graduation score ll effect a lot if i go for campus placement and if yes how can i come through cz i dnt want to excuse above mentioned reason.. please sir help me out m in a great dilema :'(

    • Kshitij, unfortunately I cannot recommend any college at your CET score, however do go for the counselling and hopefully you will make it to one of the acceptable ones.
If you do well i MBA then your graduation scores will not matter.

  57. Chirag, you have a chance because a couple of candidates may have already got into the IIMs. Do go for the counselling. Sydenham is in any case on.

    • Chirag, thanks for your kind words.
It will be stupid on my part to categorise the queries from students as CL/non-CL student queries as a large number of doubts/queries are similar.
HAve a great time at JBIMS and hope you have a great career.
      All the best.

  58. with 99.5 percentile in MAT, I’ve got all India merit no =366.
You earlier said KJ soumaya is possible with this percentile.
    Does this still look possible?

        • Sahil, difficult to say on the basis of All India Rank since it is the OMS category rank which matters but I think you have a chance.

      • Sir, My all india rank is 172, What are my chances for K J Somaiya and this is the only rank mentioned on the provisional list.Plz guide.

          • Sir, can u plz tell me whether final merit list for OMS,HU , J&K etc. would be a separate one for each or compiled together because in the brochure it is mentioned that “Separate merit list will be prepared for admission against the Maharashtra state seats (Home
University, State level and Persons With Disability) All India Level Seats (State level) and J&K
            migrant (State level) candidates .

          • Ravi, CET will come out with a category wise final merit list as mentioned in the the bulletin.

  59. Cet score : 120
    percentile : 97.14
    category : obc
    HU candidate
WHt are my chances for jbims, syndehm?

  60. I have scored 119.. 96.87 percentile.. HU student.. And a gujarati.. Do i stand a chance to get in KJ MMS gujarati minority at this score? Or welingkar through cap rounds?

  61. Sir I have also applied for ALL INDIA SEATS being a Maharashtra Candidate,Mumbai -HU and I guess as far as I know the best of my scores will be considered. So NL Dalmia is possible right through ALL INDIA CET?

  62. Sir,

I am a Maharashtra Candidate.Haven’t scored well in MHCET but my MAT FEB SCORE is 97.45 percentile.Have also applied for All India Seats.

Which colleges can I get thru at that percentile? Also can I get through NL DALMIA with the above mentioned percentile in MAT?

    Thanks

    • Mohini, unfortunately as an OMS candidate with 97.45%ile in MAT you are unlikely to get NL Dalmia. You may be able to get Chetna, Xaviers, IES etc.

        • Mohini, to the best of my knowledge Maharashtra candidates were supposed to take CET and the scores of CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA and CMAT are being considered only for the All India Seats. However I could be wrong so do attend the counseling so that you do not miss out.
If you are classified as a HU candidate then except the top 4 (JBIMS, SIMSREE, KJS and Welingkar) all others are possible.

  63. sir give me the order of preference for freshers WELINGKAR MUMBAI, XIME BANGLORE, BIMTECH GREATER NOIDA, NIRMA. which is best for HR

  64. Sir, I have scored 107 with 92.79 percentile in MHCET. I am from OMS category. I know that the top 10 institutes are ruled out at this score. But to my surprise, I have got selected for the GDPI round of Welingkar PGDM. My CAT score was very low (61.62). Also, I have scored 94.80 percentile in MAT Feb.

Have I got shortlisted on the basis of MHCET?
Which decent college can I get at this CET score?

I have converted IMT Nagpur. Should I go for it over Welingkar as Welingkar has other issues like they don’t have a mess. Accomodation is also difficult to get.

Which college can I consider over IMT Nagpur?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Tanya, most probably it is your CET score only that has worked for you. While you can get calls from other PGDM programs all of them will be below IMT Nagpur and Welingkar. My suggestion is to consider Welingkar but join only if you get PGDM Mumbai. All other programs like ebiz etc should be avoided.

  65. Sir,This may be naive but we have to mention All india test score through Online application form in DTE website only?I mean they have not asked for any proof in that form so how are they going to prepare merit list without proof?

    • Sambhav, documents will be verified at designated ARCs in Maharastra before the publication of final merit list.

  66. Sir,I’ve a query regarding procedure. Now that the result is out, would the second process be checking in ARC centers(12/5/14-22/5/14) or would they display the merit list first of colleges?

  67. hello sir , i got 101marks in mhcet 89.82%ile and i am mahrastra candidate other than mumbai. which college i can expect through counselling and i hv also appeared for welingkar’s psychometric test.

      • Thank you sir
Yesterday I hv been shortlisted for stage 2 of welingkar institute what are my chances with 89.82%ile score to convert it and on what basis they select because its top b school of 4th rank in mah and I was nt expecting to get selected. Do they consider profile as I am a general secretary of my college(gec chandrapur).

  68. Sir,You said All India score would be converted to equivalent score of Mh-cet.If I have scored 99.5 percentile in Mat feb then my equivalent score would be 99.5 percentile in Mh-cet?Then the corresponding score of mine would be 136 only..What colleges would be expected this year in this percentile?

    • Ahanmukh, in Welingkar Mumbai only PGDM and MMS are worth joining and they should be preferred to XIME Bangalore.

  69. Hello Sir,

I have scored MHCET – 99.5%tile) and Feb CMAT – 99.93%tile. I am HU candidate. I want to know which colleges I can expect through CAP rounds?

    Thanks

  70. hello gp sir
i have converted SIIB IB and FORE pgdm…..i have got 97.12 percentile in mh cet (oms)…..do u think i can get something better than these two college at this percentile….please suggest

    • utkarsh, you are unlikely to get a better institutes than these two based on 97.12%ile in CET for OMS candidate.

  71. sir, i am MS candidate, my score in cet is 116/200,96.03 percentile which colleges i can get…i am an open catagory student…my hu is sgbau amravati.

  72. OHU cet score 132 , 99.16 percentile. CMAT 14 99.23 percentile. What are chances for JBIMS/ SIMSREE/ Somaiya?

  73. Sir,i scored 90 marks in MHCET ….However I have scored 186(97.2 percentile) in Feb CMAT ….Sir,Can I expect good colleges on the basis of CMAT score as I have no hope through MHCET score ?

    • Abhishek, unfortunately OMS cutoff is likely to be at 99.99%ile but do go for the counselling as we could be in for a pleasant surprise.

      • Sir, according to them, I have got a rank of 25/26, is it impossible even at that, given 18 students from oms?

        • Abhishek, it is difficult but it is possible that some of the students above you may have calls from IIMs and may not come for the counselling.

          • Sir what is the equalization process of mhcet score with other exams like cmat, mat etc

          • Abhishek, DTE has not given any information on the equalisation process and hence will not be able to comment on this.

  74. Sir I am a Type B candidate. I have maharashtra domicile but I am studying in a non home university. I have scored 99.58 and score is 137. Is jbims possible
Also can you throw some light on the correctness of the cutoff given below

    https://www.facebook.com/ravgun/photos/a.305466949609659.1073741840.156433134513042/305466969609657/?type=3&theater

    https://www.facebook.com/ravgun/photos/a.305466949609659.1073741840.156433134513042/305467119609642/?type=3&theater

    • Himanshu, Type B implies that you or your Father or your Mother of the candidate are Domiciled in the State of Maharashtra. You Home University is the one under whose jurisdiction your location of domicile falls. At 99.58%ile however I do not expect a call from JBIMS for either a HU or OHU candidate, you should however attend the counselling since my estimates as based on assumptions which could be incorrect.

      • sir can u pls elaborate on the jurisdiction part, m pursuing my b tech in chennai and a fresher.
also what are the chances of sydenham and other colleges through cet….can u pls tell me the ones that could be possible

        • Himanshu, Candidates who do not have a Maharashtra domicile are classified as Outside Maharashtra State (OMS) candidate and 15% sets in the CET colleges are reserved for them. As OMS candidate you will need 99.99%ile for JBIMS and over 99.9%ile for Sydenham and other top CET colleges.

  75. SIR i am a fresher, converted XIME banglore,SIIB-IB,IBS HYDERABAD,SDMIMD mysore, waiting for welingkar Mumbai. MY area of interest is marketing. which one should be prefered based on specialization and placements?

    • Shanmukh, SIIB IB will be my preference among these since it is likely to provide the best placement opportunities, the others including Welingkar are significantly lower in terms of rankings and opportunities.

  76. Sir, I am an OMS candidate and I have scored 85 percentile in MHCET. Do I stand any chance for PGDM in Welingkar, Mumbai. Pl guide urgently.

  77. Hello sir i got 114 score in mba cet 2014 with 95.35 percentile. home university pune . any chances for PUMBA?

  78. Sir, I have scored 99.24 percentile in MH-CET 2014 and am an OMS candidate…what are my chances to get a call from Sydenham?

  79. Sir for a home university student what are the chances of getting jbims at a score of 133 and 99.24%ile?? As per dte analysis, my rank is around 300 😐

  80. Hello sir,
    I am J&K migrant candidate and got 75%ile in MH-CET 2014
is there any chances of getting a good college under mumbai university like SIMSREE, KJ SOMANIA, LN WELENGER, NL DALMIHA, or PUMBA ..???
    plz reply
    regards

    • Souma, KM is the most difficult category to estimate the cutoffs since it has very few seats. My estimate is that JBIM and SIMSREE are unlikely but you have a chance in the others.

  81. Sir i am an OBC HU candidate with a score of 115 in cet and 95.4%ile. Is there any chance of me making into the top4?

  82. GP Sir ,
i have secured 142 marks in mhcet with 99.85 percentile . i come under open , OHU category . can you please tell me if i can get into jbms .

    • Gautham, you are possibly a borderline case for JBIMS but have a decent chance in SIMSREE. Let us hope for the best.

  83. Hi,

    I got 99.58 % in mah cet 2014. I’m an OMS student.
1.which colleges i may get JBIMS / Simsree / Kj somaiya / Wellingkar?
2.Which coll;ege is better kJ somaiya or wellingkar ?
    3. should I go for MMS or PGDM in this colleges in case if I get selected?.
    Thanks in advance..

    • Ravi, JBIMS and SIMSREE are unlikely but the other two are possible. KJ Somaiya is significantly better than Welingkar and MMS should be preferred to PGDM since the placement of both programs is similar but the fee of MMS is lower.

  84. Sir, I got 95.72 percentile. OMS student. any chances of getting better college than SIBM Pune? I have SIBM pune in hand.

  85. Hi sir,
I have scored 120 in MH CET and percentile 97.14.
So which colleges can I get through with this score?
PS: I am an OMS Female candidate.

      • Ok! And what is the next step after getting the score card. I mean how to go about the admission process and all. If you could guide a little.

        • Aditi, DTE will come out with their counselling (CAP) dates as per your rank wherein you will be allotted the colleges based on availability of seats and your rank.

  86. sir i got selected for Lovely professional university punjab, how is it for MBA. can i join in that

    • Chirag, my estimate is that you could miss JBIMS, however do attend the counselling as the assumptions on which we have estimated the cutoffs could be incorrect.

      • Chirag, apart from JBIMS you are likely to get SIMSREE and the others. Have not posted the estimated cutoffs.

  87. Sir,

I am an outside Maharashtra candidate and I secured an AIR 2 in Feb CMAT.
But due to some confusion over the JBIMS admission process, I didn’t fill up the MH CET.
Do I stand eligible for JBIMS?
Is there any other way out?

    ~Abhilash.

  88. sir mh cet colleges give mms degree….what’s the difference between mba & mms…..is mms any less as a degree than mba??

  89. sir tell me the order of preference BIM trichy, LIBA, GREAT LAKES PGDM, XIME BANGLORE, SIBM PUNE, WELINGKAR, NMIMS BANGLORE, IMT NAGPUR

    • Shanmukh, all of these are acceptable institutes/programs and if you have interview calls from all these you should target converting them rather than getting into the relative ranking. Let us discuss the order of preference only after you get the final calls.

  90. HELLO SIR
sir apart from JBIMS which MH-CET colleges can be considered better than SIIB-IB,if any?….i am an OMS candidate

      • Sir two queries following it…. Probable cut off of sydenham for oms candidate….nd mh cet college offers mms degree….what’s the difference between mba and mms?

        • Karan, MMS is Master in Management Studies, which is equivalent to MBA offered by Mumbai University. As far as the cutoff for Sydenham is concerned, considering the fact that DTE is accepting scores of both the CMAT exams, MAT, ATMA, CAT, XAT as well as MH-CET, the cut-off will lie in the range of 99.90 to 99.95 percentile.

      • hello sir

i have got 97.14 in mh cet (OMS)…..i have converted SIIB-IB….so i don’t suppose i am going to get any better option than SIIB at this percentile??…..

  91. Hi GP sir…I got rank 3 in CMAT feb 2014…What are are chances for JBIMS? and will there be any gd/pi?

      • Sir..I am told that they will merge the cmat september and cmat feb scores and after that they will assign rank accordingly…and besides that, there are 20 guys in CAT who got 99.99 percentile(185000 candidates), 9 in xat(90000 candidates), 6 in cmat september(60000), 9 in cmat feb..there must be some 99.99 in gmat, mat, atma and cet also..so I am doubtful…sir..please throw some light on how they select candidates and what are chances for guys having rank 3 or below..

        • Vishank, there is no clarity on the issue of merging the scores of the two CMATs. Also given that the Feb’14 CMAT was more difficult than Sep’13 CMAT the normalisation process is likely to come into play and create more confusion.
You can forget about the CAT toppers since practically all of them would have IIM calls and most of them are unlikely to consider JBIMS. However the toppers of MAT, ATMA and CMAT will all be there.
In the case of candidates securing equal percentile Score, their relative merit will be determined on the basis of the following order of preference:
          a) Higher percentage of marks scored in the aggregate at the HSC (Std. XII) or its equivalent examination will get preference.
          b) Higher percentage of the marks scored in the aggregate at the SSC (Std. X) or its equivalent examination will get preference.
          c) Birth date of the candidate (Elder candidates will get preference)

  92. Sir how do you rate LIBA when compared with XIMB, is great lakes good on ROI ? in what kind of category these colleges LIBA,GREAT LAKES will fall

    • Shanmukh, XIMB is significantly better than LIBA and the two should not be compared. Great LAkes PGPM is a good program and will be better than LIBA.

    • Ayush, SIMSREE (Sydneham) is better than KJ Somaiya and IMI in terms of placement opportunities and fee hence it is my preferred option.

  93. Dear Gautam Puri Sir,
I am a Mumbai University(HU) general category student. what score in mht-cet will be a safe bet to get into jbims?
    Thank you in advance.

  94. Respected Gautam Puri Sir,
I am a Mumbai university(HU) general category student. What score can be considered a safe one to get into jbims?

    • Shanmukh, my preference is for NM Bangalore since the NM brand name is stronger than IBS and a better placement record.

  95. Sir,
i have got a call from xiss ranchi from marketing how do you rate it in terms of placements and also i have applied to MHT-CET through my sept CMAT score of 65%ile only so will this score be considered at the time of centralised admission process if i do well in MHT-CET also do i need to separately apply for the MMS course in different colleges. plz reply

    • Raunak, XISS is known for its HR course. XISS-Marketing will be an average option. Your CMAT score will be used by DTE for centralized counselling. You don’t need to apply to individual colleges for MMS course.

  96. my GDPI for XIMB bhubaneshwar, NMIMS banglore, SDMIMD mysore, IBS hyderabad is over and i have done well in all of these. if XIMB did not get converted which one should be the best? still XIME banglore, IMT dubai gdpi has to take place, taken cmat february expecting a score above 250. what should i do?

  97. sir i want about xime banglore, how is it for hr and finance, is it a good b-school to join, i heard that they dont have good faculty

    • Shanmukh, my parameter of recommendation is placement and on this parameter XIME Bangalore is a decent option and should be considered.

  98. sir this is sameer, i want to know about imi kolkata and imi bhubaneshwar, are they doing good compared with imi delhi, i got a GD/PI call from kolkata, is it safe to go to imi kolkata, how about industry interface and placements

    • Shanmuks, IMI K and B are new and without any placement record difficult to comment if they are worth joining. While the IMI Delhi is an established institute and it will have a positive rub-off on the other two but the location and lack of placement data is a dampener.

  99. sir i asked a question about iit kanpur and simsree above..according to website iit kanpur’s avg salary is 8.5 lpa and simsree’s avg salary is 10.5 lpa..should i still go for iitk??

  100. Sir expecting a score of 300 in CMAT Feb also I am an OMS candidate do i stand a chance for JBIMS or shall I give CET to improve my chances for the same. I am from Lucknow and am applying for OMS seat in JBIMS. Thanks once again.

  101. Sir the target score of 140 that you’ve mentioned.. Is it for jbims? If not what score should I aim for to get into jbims? General category Mumbai University student

    • Aron, the cut-offs will depend on the difficulty level of the paper. However, to be safe try maximizing your score. 130+ should be safe for HU General category.

      • Sir I read on cetking’s fb page that the cut for home university general category student will be around 145.. So, I’m a bit confused.. Will 130+ ensure jbims for an average paper?
        Sorry for the inconvenience.

  102. Sir, February MAT results are out and I have got a percentile of 99.93 with composite score 800. How are my chances for converting JBIMS as an OMS candidate? Is there any chance considering there will be no GD/PI this year?

  103. i have got a call from nmims banglore, and i have applied for imt dubai through gmat for finance which one should be preferred? applied for imt nagpur also with xat-90percentile

      • sir i also got a call from XIM bhubaneswar, apart from nmims banglore, is there any place disadvantage for bhubaneshwar, to which one have to give primary preference

          • SIR my gdpi for ibs hyderabad, sdmimd, ximb bhubaneshwar, nmims banglore has been completed .i had done well and sure that each call will convert, still gdpi for imt dubai is there, is imt good on ROI, WHICH one should i prefer for finance give me the order sir. thanking you

          • Shanmukh, out of the options that you have, XIMB will be the best one to go for. Others can be counted on the same level.

  104. sir i got 96%ile in cat..i have calls from lbsim and iit roorkee..expecting call from iit kanpur and kjsom..final year student with a job of 3.25 pa in hand..i think i could do better next year in cat..if i convert should i join lbsim or kjsom or iits??

    • Mayank, with a good job in hand you can definitely consider going for a retake. You can easily move to the next level of institutes and do not need to settle for these.

      • Thank you sir for your reply..at what rank in cmat i can get jbims or simsree?? Earlier you said that MAT is a better exam than cmat for these clgs..since i have not filled form of MAT..How many times mat happen in a year?? Does only MAT(Feb) makes us eligible for these clgs..or any mat will do??
Because while filling the mhcet form i was asked to enter my MAT(feb) details..

        • mayank, only MAT Feb is being accepted by DTE for its colleges.
For JBIMS you will need to be among the top 25 and for SIMSREE a rank of less than 200 will be required.

          • Mayank, IIT Mumbai and MDI Gurgaon are at the same level similarly there is not much to choose between IIT Delhi and SIBM Pune which are a notch below. SIMSREE is significantly lower.

  105. Is there any minimum criteria for X & XII for getting into JBIMS ? Will the under 60% score in X & XII will disqualify me even if i get 99.99% ile ?
    Kindly guide Sir,

  106. sir..
my question may seem out of context but just wanted ur sincere and earnest advice and take on this.
Sir,is PGDMHR from IMI delhi a good option??

  107. Hello sir,
The important dates section on the website do not suggest any GD/PI round.
Does the selection entirely depend upon the aptitude test?

    Thanks.

    • Sanjay, there are no sectional cut-offs. However, in order to do well overall, you’ll have perform well in all the sections.

  108. Hello GP sir, I am from Pune university! so I am eligible for 15% quota of JBIMS (non Mumbai University). Just wanted to know how much I should aim in order to secure my seat in JBIMS?

    • Rhea, you should be aiming for top 10 ranks in CET. It’s difficult to comment on the absolute marks required for that. It’ll depend on the relative performance of other students. However, a score of around 160 should suffice.

  109. R/SIR,

YOU HAVE MENTIONED THAT CL WILL PROVIDE 15 CET MOCK. SO PLZ WILL YOU TELL ME HOW CAN I GET THESE MOCK , I AM A EX CL STUDENT & CURRENTLY I AM REGISTERED WITH ONLINE CAT TEST SERIES 2013 & PDP SESSIONS WITH CL. I CALLED AT CP CENTRE, BUT THEY DON’T HAVE ANY INFO REGARDING THESE MOCKS. SO TELL ME WHO CAN I ACCESS THESE MOCKS.

    • Pradeep, CET mocks were not a part of the CAT or Comprehensive Test Series. However CL classroom students and students who had enrolled for comprehensive test series have been given 6 CET Mocks which should be available in your SIS. A separate 15 test CET test Series will be available shortly.

  110. Sir kindly mention what should be my minimum score (out of 200) and composite percentile in Feb MAT (I am about to appear in the online version on Feb8) so as to get a call from JBIMS? Also is GK score required to get a high composite percentile? I heard from somewhere that the GK marks is not included in the composite percentile. Is that right info?

    • Raja, with minimum 160 in CET and about 325-330 in CMAT you’ll have a chances at JBIMS. GK score is included while calculating the final score in CMAT.

  111. hi sir,

i gave a mock of CL CET, i want to know that the difficulty level is greater than actual CET? as i found it quite tough.
any advice you can give regarding test taking strategies? any specific strategy to follow to score above 150 surely ?

    • Rishi, the CL CET mocks are just a bit above the level of actual CET paper but not by a huge margin. Speed is the key to excel in CET. So, practice, practice and practice.

  112. Sir, can we expect an article on ” how to decide for next CAT attempt”, juxtaposing and referring to minimum (must) criteria of top b schools?

    • Like I had read your past articles. You clearly stated, with less than 80% acads its tough to get a call from IIMA. But, the criteria stated in IIMA website doesn’t mentions all this, same with other b schools.
Though I have commonly heard tales of people and their relatives converting IIMC, L, K with poor acads.
Please shed some light and clear the air…?

      • Sachin, quite right that people with low acads convert IIM-C and L. As you talked about IIM-A, it’s not the same. High weightage is given to acads while calculating the composite score for GD and PI calls.

      • But this year’s IIMA’s criteria mentioned that top scorers will get a direct call for WAT/ PI (without calculating their composite scores). Ain’t their a remote chance? Please keep such (alluring and disguising) things in mind, if you write an article on it.
        Thanks for you reply.

    • Mihir, the exact required score can not be told at this moment. However, a person with a score of 160+ should have decent chances at JBIMS.

  113. Sir,

I wanted to ask you a personal question that I am confused about.

I passed out of IIT Kharagpur in May 2013 and have been working in Mumbai in a 8 Lac job. Should I go for full time MBA in NMIMS Mumbai – I applied when I saw that their average package is 14 Lacs, but now I am having 2nd thoughts.
Will going for a college like NMIMS be a wise decision for an IIT pass out; I mean it may act as a negative point rather than enhancing my profile. Please let me know what you think?

    Thanks

    • Mihir, there is nothing like it’ll add a negative point to your profile. The “IIM” tag is always good but it doesn’t mean that others are not. NMIMS is a premier institute of our country. If you want to pursue MBA this year only you can go for it. It’s completely your prerogative to go for it or not.

  114. sir this is sameer, i am interested in finance, give me the order of priority ibs hyderabad, k.j.somaiya, simsree mumbai, great lakes, xime banglore, welingkar, isbm pune

  115. Brilliant analysis sir! it sure has made things easier.
Sir, i have a couple of questions:
    1) I’m not strong in quant. I don’t practice much of it either. I manage to score 90 percent marks in verbal and reasoning section but, my quant scores reduce my over all percentage. With less then one month left fr CET I’m pushing myself hard to ace a few important topics in quant. Can u please advice me about the same?
    2) Sir, now that there won’t be any GD-PI for admissions through CET, whats you’re take on it? how much of a game changer can it be?

    • Rish, CET is a speed game. You should practice and practice till perfection to ace the quant section. In absence of GD and PI, the CET and other exams’ score are solely going to run the show.

  116. Sir ,

I have received a call from tiss hrm program.please tell me how can i report my call at CL?want to start the preparations at the earliest.could you please suggest what all i need to study for the same?

    • Pritha, call the centre where you are enrolled. If not enrolled, you can get in touch with the nearest CL-centre and get yourself registered.

  117. Hello Sir

I belong to Non Maharashtra Category. How are the chances for students like us to get into a good B School in Mumbai. Are strictly 85% seats reserved for Maharashtra Domicile Candidates.

Also ,please guide about some good colleges in Mumbai through CET.

    • Prateek, some of the good colleges include JBIMS, SIMSREE, KJ Somaiya and Welingkar. Your chances will depend on your score only as there will be no GD and PI.

  118. I am born and brought up in Chennai. My mother is born and brought in Maharashtra and after marriage shifted to Chennai. She has all SSC, HSC, birth certificate and marriage documents. She lived in Jalgaon, Maharashtra and Chennai for 25 and 24 years respectively.
Do I fall in category B of Maharashtra state quota?
And can a Maharashtra Domicile certificate be made now for my mother

  119. Sir , are students outside maharashtra eligible to take MHCET for admissions into JBIMS?and could you plz quote the cutoff for an OMS candidate for the same?

    • Jay, OMS students can write MHCET for the All India Seats. The cutoff for JBIMS is likely to be around 160+ as they are considering the scores of other exams like CAT/XAT/ATMA/MAT/CMAT too.

  120. Gp sir
i am a j&k candidate. i am not able to comprehend something from brochure, pls help me out by confirming through some authorities , since i called upDTE but didnt get any response. Will j&k candidates be given merit ranks strictly on the basis of cet score or the all india entrance exam score????
    pls help me out.
i am really in a dilemma. have been working 8 hrs a day for cet, but 90 percentille in CAT. if the admission is done through all india exams then i have already lost the battle sir….:(

    • Isha, your percentile in an All India test will be converted to an equivalent score in CET. For example if you have 95%ile in CAT then you will be given a score that is equivalent to 95%ile in CET and then the merit list will be prepared. There will be an overall as well as a category wise merit list.
The J&K Migrant candidates aspiring to seek admission against the seats reserved for J & K migrant candidates should appear for MAHMBA/MMS–CET 2014.

  121. Hi sir,
Please let me know how many seats are there for mba in jbims from cmat, cet or cat??? and what about reservation for mumbai or maharashtra in jbims??
That will help me in deciding to give cet or not….

    • Amin, 85 percent seats are reserved for Maharastra students and the rest 15 percent are for the OMS students i.e. the All India seats.

  122. sir can u throw some light on the reservation system for CET as i ve heard its most preferrable for maharashtrian students.
i am from KM category and thus want some info regarding dat.
    regards.

    • hey
i am isha. i am a j&k candidate.. can u pls tell me how are we gonna get admission… will it be through cet score or any all india exams???

      • Isha, The J&K Migrant candidates aspiring to seek admission against the seats reserved for J & K migrant candidates should appear for MAHMBA/MMS–CET 2014.

    • Pranav, 85% of the seats are reserved for candidates from Maharashtra and this has reservation for various backward categories.
