CAT 2014 Analysis: Nov 22, Morning slot

The third slot of CAT 2014 is over and it was along the same lines as the first 2 slots. There were no surprises in the structure and the QADI section had 34 QA questions along with 16 DI questions in 4 sets of 4 questions each. In the VALR section, Verbal Logic and Usage contributed to 18 questions while LR and RC contributed to 16 questions each (4 sets of 4 questions each).

While the QA AND VA questions continued to be very easy, LR and DI were difficult and many students would have had a tough time trying to solve these sets. Verbal Logic and RC proved to be life savers in the second section.

    cat 14 score 53 percentile NC-OBC category
i knoww dat its very poor score, but still what college can i get???

  2. Hi Sir,

I belong to ST category. My Overall CAT 2014 percentile is 44(50.16 and 35.60). Is there any chance to get a call from any of the IIMs? Should I apply for the IITs ?

    Please reply soon !!!!

  3. Sir i want to know how much slot 2 is goona benifit from normalization??/
I wrote CAT on 16 nov slot 2, 57 attempts with almost 50-52 correct any idea abt my percentile. pls answer both sir…

  4. Sir, I belong to ST category, I attempted a total of 28 questions with 100% accuracy. Can i expect to get around 85 percentile ? Can u tell me from which institutes I can get a call ?
Am I eligible to apply for IIT-Bombay (MBA) ?
    10th- 84 %
    12th- 79 %
    B.Tech- 78 %
    Experience- 12 Months

One more confusion… Last year we saw that IIM-A gave admission to a candidate with less than 40 percentile marks and they told that in order to fill the seats they did like that. But this year they are saying that they will not call the candidates who will not cross the min. cutoffs. Does it mean that the seats will remain vacant if it happens like previous year ?

    • Jane, this year IIMA has increased the minimum score required by ST candidates for an interview call and hence last year’s phenomenon is unlikely to be repeated this year.
A raw score of 84 is likely to be less than 80%ile hence I do not think IIM A is possible, however calls from all IITs are possible. You can also get calls from some of the IIMs.

      • GP Sir, could you please tell me the names of diff. IITs which you would suggest me to apply ? Which one are better as far as placements are concerned ? Please suggest…

  5. sir, I need to ask abot IIT kanpur mba program..
In eligibility criteria it states that “B.Tech from any AICTE recognised intitute/university”. Sir, I did my b.tech from an university ugc recognized … but not aicte recognized… and university registrar says university does not need aicte approval its d affiliated colleges dat needs aicte approval…not the university ..so in short plz tell me dat m i eligible for applying at IIT Kanpur???

    • Lucas, you are eligible.
      Universities are recognised by UGC.
AICTE is responsible for institutes/colleges that are NOT affiliated to a University.

  6. Sir, what would be a suitable place where I can raise my anguish and serious displeasure at the way my NMAT exam was conducted?

I appeared for the exam and with 2 minutes left for the first section to end, got to know that the review button would be activated only when all questions have been viewed. This was not the case with the mocks and irrespective, I have the right to view my answers at any time during the test. Who the bloody hell is pearson/nm to decide that for me? I lost out on 2 sitters because I had to go back to randomly mark 7-8 questions. What a waste. This of course pissed me off so much that inevitably, the other two sections also took a beating.

Now, halfway through the second section, my system shuts down..wow! I go around finding the person concerned to get it fixed. I am sure that you will agree that it completely took away the momentum. I lost time in refocusing, not to mention the incipient anger and frustration.

Thirdly, there was NO physical invigilation (What are the examiners paid for?). No-one was present in the hall except for maybe 5-6 minutes out of a hundred and twenty. I yet again had to get up and find someone so as to ask him to request the other candidates to shut their stupid mouths, coz everyone was mumbling ( why stop there I say? relax your larynx, take in some air and shout for all you can).

Dear sir, how much do I pay these blokes? 2000 bucks for a 120 minute exam and they bloody don’t have the decency (let alone the courtesy) to arrange a hassle free exam? Do I not deserve my money’s worth? If we order at a restaurant and get a bad dish, there is a prompt change of order or a replacement. Why is the education sector immune to this? I speak as an indignant consumer. I am not just a student but also a consumer and if I am bloody paying them, then I DESERVE to get my due.

My mock scores in the T.I.M.E series were 228,231,246 and 273. Now,what exactly does this ridiculous institute want? Competence? If yes, then why not give a fair chance to everyone? Why the hell should I pay them another 2000 rupees for something that’s entirely their fault?

I know you might be thinking as to why am I venting my anger on you. I assure you that I am not. I have the deepest regard for you and hence would like your view on the whole thing. I have only 2 days in which I can appear for a retest (19 and 20, 21st being the SNAP day). What should I do sir? Kindly advice.

    Raghav

    • Paarth, yes PDP covers NMIMS preparation also. Please connect with your nearest CL center. Will be coming out with a post on interview preparation shortly.

  7. sir i am aspiring to pursue hrm from tiss. but i have 2 years gap after my graduation . is it possible to covert to tiss if i get a call .

  8. Sir,
based on CL CAT percentile predictor i will be achieving 97-98.5 percentile , from which IIM’s i can accept a call , my profile is

    X – 85%
    XII – 80.4 %
    B.tech – 70.6 %
    Work EX – 35 months

  9. Sir i have attempted cat 14 evening slot with 12 attempt in quant of which 10 sureshot correct .it could be 100% accuracy also .In verbal i attempted 18 question 14 correct sureshot .Rest also could be .Can u say can i get iim calls n which iim looks likely.I belong to sc category. My profile 10-86,12-73,Graduation-66%.

    • saurabh10march, as a SC candidate you will need over 75%ile to get an interview call. Please submit your attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor to get an estimate of your normalised score and percentile.

  10. Dear GP Sir,

Request you to kindly comment on my chances of getting an IIM Call ,

    X- 85.16
    XII-80.8
    Grad – 72.96
Work Ex- 7 + years in Consulting ( Process & Domain ) with IT Giant .

    Attempts 66
    QA/DI -29 /30 ( net correct & conservative)
    VA/LR -32/36 ( net correct optimistic &conservative)

    CL predicts soemwhere b/w 99.04 to 99.5

My question would be if by chance also percentile drops to 98.5 + to 99 during normalisation would work ex and profile come into picture .

Appreciate your assistance in this regards.

    • AG, work experience and profile do not play a significant role in case of IIM A and C but it will be helpful for the other IIMs.
With a 7+ year experience I am not sure if you should be going for a 2 year MBA program.

  11. Sir, which slots are likely to benefit from the normalisation process?

I took my exam on 22nd nov first slot. And my projected score after normalisation dropped from 160-152!

Sir please shed some light on this.

    • Sreshtha, as per our data Slot 4 is the most difficult and will gain the most, also slot 3 is the easiest and hence has will lead to reduction in the normalisation process.

  12. Good Evening sir,

What calls can I expect in the range of 95-97.5 percentile. I belong to OBC category? I have applied for FMS, MDI and NITIE till now. Any older IIM calls with low graduation marks??

    Xth- 92
    XIIth-82
    Graduation: 68

    • Vijay, you can expect almost all IIMs, FMS, MDI, NITIE and all IITs. The only institute where you may have a problem with your graduation marks is IIMB.

  13. Hi Sir, I took CAT in the morning slot on 22nd. I have attempted about 74 questions( 35 QA, 39 Eng). What can be my percentile given that I expect about 80% accuracy in Quants and 60% accuracy in English?? I am not a CL student and I am apprehensive of uploading my CAT Admit Card in the percentile predictor which it requires. Is there any other way other than uploading the CAT admit card?

  14. Hello sir,
I am a CL Test series student. I’ve entered my attempts in predictor. However, I am not able to view B School advisory.
It asks me to enter mock scores first. On entering TIME mock scores (CL mock scores are collected automatically), and submitting, it gives an error message somewhat like: “ERROR IN GENERATING RESULTORA-01403: NO DATA FOUND”. Please look into this

  15. Respected Sir,
    Normalized Percentile: 99.13-99.92

    Acads: Xth: 92.8
    XIIth: 87.8
Graduation (Currently Final year): 66.2 ( I almost certainly expect it to go up to 70.1 by January)

I really want to get into one of the top tens and will drop for an year if not selected, and take up a campus placement offer. I am a general, male, engineer (Decent top 10 institute).

Sir, what can I expect looking forward? Really anxious.
Would be very thankful if you can give any advice 🙂

    • Rohan, the predictor is based on your estimated accuracy and even if you have a slightly lower score you can look forward to calls from at least a few IIMs, FMS and IITs. Start preparing for the next stage, read newspapers regularly and also revise your academics as they are important in interviews.

  16. Hello GP sir..i took CAT on 22 november first slot..i attempted 40 questions overall..with 80-90% accuracy the CL predictor predicts my percentile between 54-77 after normalisation..so this means by any chance i cannot cross 80 percentile??

    • Ayushi, for 80%ile you will need a high level of accuracy. Hopefully you have a better accuracy than what you have estimated.

  17. Sir, the CL percentile predictor does not consider sectional percentiles. Can u tell me that what raw score in VA for slot 1 will be required to get 85%ile and 90%ile respectively in order to clear sectional cutoffs for most colleges.

    • Ankit, this has not been calculated by the Percentile Predictor and the number will be different for each slot. My estimate is that a net score of around 60 will be sufficient to clear the sectional cutoffs of all institutes.

    • Sam, yes the Percentile Predictor now takes into account the relative level of difficulty of the slots while calculating the percentiles.

  18. Sir, a percentile range of 98.69-99.66 is being shown as 98-99 post-normalization. There is no fractional part to both the figures (98 and 99). Is this a sort of rough estimate/prediction for a range one can expect? Is it being rounded off to the nearest possible Integer? Waiting for your note on percentile predictor. Thank you 🙂

    • Sam, The Percentile Predictor was rounding off the percentiles to integral values. Thanks for pointing out the error, it has been rectified.

  19. Sir, a percentile range of 98.69-99.66 is being shown as 98-99 post-normalization. There is no fractional part to both the figures (98 and 99). Is this a sort of rough estimate/prediction for a range one can expect? Is it being rounded off to the nearest possible integer? Waiting for your note on the percentile predictor. Thank you.

    • Sam, The Percentile Predictor was rounding off the percentiles to integral values. Thanks for pointing out the error, it has been rectified.

  20. Sir can you please tell me the approximate score for slot 4 to get 80 and 90 percentile in each section respectively, as well as the overall score for the same? I would be grateful. Thanks.

    • Draco, the sectional cut off is a bit difficult this year with everyone reporting a very high level of accuracy. For the overall score please check the percentile predictor.

      • Any chance of quant 75 percentile being in the region of 40-45 sir? Also sir, i jave noticed that students do tend to overestimate how well they have done. Jow can anyone know for sure they have 90 or 80 % accuracy? Doesn’t it mean they have deliberately marked some questions wrong then? I know it’s only an estimate but still.

        • Draco, in section 2 a 45 could give a 75%ile but in sections 1 a higher score will be required.
You are right about the fact that most of us tend to over estimate our accuracy but we will get a confirmation of this only after CAT results are declared.

  21. GP sir, expecting around 86-87% as per percentile predictor and my expectations as well. From obc category. From which IIMs can I expect calls ?
also, what are the chances of Doms, IIT madras ?

  22. Sir,
cl percentile predictor shows my percentile about 98.55,however what bothers me is the final score after normalisation(taking scores from all slots and weighing the advantage/disadvantage of a particular slot).1)How much variation can we xpect?
2)when will be the revised scores be available.
3)I am a SC candidate…X=79;XII=78..B.Tech=7.23/10;Wrk Ex=36 months…what are my chances of getting into IIM A,B,C

    • Abhijit, responded to you earlier query a little while age, am reproducing it for your reference.

Abhijit, forget normalisation – 60 attempts with 90% accuracy and SC category means that you should start preparing for the next stage of the selection process of all IIMs.
We have normalised the scores across the four slots and you can check your normalised score and percentile in the Percentile Predictor.

  23. Sir,
I had given my Cat exam in the first slot…attempted 60 questions with 90%accuracy.The percentile predictor shows my score around 98.55.However,it has come to notice, that the candidates from other slots had attempted more as compared to those frm slot 1.My query is how much will the variance be,if the normalisation is taken into consideration. And last and imporatant of my apprehensions…I am a SC candidate..can I expect a call from the IIM”s based on the new score

    • Abhijit, forget normalisation – 60 attempts with 90% accuracy and SC category means that you should start preparing for the next stage of the selection process of all IIMs.
We have normalised the scores across the four slots and you can check your normalised score and percentile in the Percentile Predictor.

  24. Respected Sir,
I have a doubt. For NC-OBC candidates while filling up the Form I uploaded the OBC Certificate which is provided by the DM office of the districts rather than using the format which CAT has asked on its web-site and it is around 3 Years old. Will this be a problem if admit to the interivew??
    Please resolve this query.

    • Prince, it should not be a problem but to be safe get another one in the format given on the CAT website and that can be submitted at the time of the interview.

  25. Sir
When will the percentile predictor get updated based on 22Nov slots analysis..
I saw thai it was last revised on 21st Nov..

  26. Hi,

I have attempted 55 questions(26+29) . Using CLPP I am getting a percentile above 99 if all are correct..and in a range of 97.97 to 98.75 based on how many incorrect questions are there(2-4 in each section).
I gave the test on 22 afternoon slot. I just wanted to know with so many attempting more than 60, more than 70 and even more than 80 and 90..Is it really possible for me to get the above percentiles??
Or is it that the percentile was based on the no. of students that have used the CLPP, as this number of sample space would be very less.

    Regards
    A Troubled Mind

    • Shayantu, a majority of students who submit data in the percentile predictor are in the top quartile and it has be be adjusted to represent the population which we have done successfully in the past. This is the first year of the new Percentile Predictor and will get fine tuned as we go along. One issue that is beyond our control is that while the attempts are confirmed number of correct answers is an estimate. However I do not think that you will be less than 98%ile if all your answers are correct and less than 97%ile otherwise. Also there is the issue of normalisation across the four slots. Suggest that you take these percentiles as an indicator of your performance and move on. Focus on the other MBA entrances.
Today we will be releasing the normalised scores and percentiles which will hopefully give you a better idea of the overall performance.

  27. Sir,
My IIFT score is 46.76 according to CL IIFT score calculator.
    GK:- 5.5 , QA+DI:- 13.34,EU+RC:- 18.25,LR 9.67.
Do I have a chance to clear the cutoffs for a call sir?

    Thanks

  28. Sir, I have attempted 58 questions with 75 to 80% accuracy. Which colleges should i apply for?? And what is my likely percentile?

  29. GP sir,
My question is regarding the cut-off of IIFT.. As per CL analysis, the cutoff is 35-36. I am getting 42.7 according to the CL IIFT score calculator. I have 10th-89.80 12th-69.60 Grad-72.80 and work-ex 15 months at present. What are my chances of getting a call and converting it with decent extra-curriculars ?

    • Chirag, final call is a function of your score in the written test, GD and the interview and hence while a good written score is helpful it lone is not sufficient to ensure a final call. Start preparing for the interview.

  30. GP Sir,

I was just curious hw the percentile calculator works?

on 17th Nov, when I checked, it showed me conservative percentile 99.57 and optimistic one 99.95. This cant be serious! could it be? Even after revision it s hovering around 98.

People are not accurate while judging their accuracy. If it is based on previous CAT data then also seems irrelevant as 50% attempts this year could well lead nowhere! Last year was a different game altogether.

    Please shed a little light!

    • Shubham, a note of the percentile predictor will be released shortly. Please check your normalised scores and percentiles.

  31. Sir,
I have attempted 70 questions in total (33- Q and 37-V).CLPP is showing 94 % for 70-75 % accuracy(worst possible case). Can I apply for SP jain with this score? My 10th score is 94.33, +2-95.5,B.Tech-87.7 and I am having 17 months of work ex.What are the other colleges I can apply for? Could you share tips for the PI/WAT round ?

    • Maheedhar, with an excellent academic record and good work experience you have a good chance of call from SP Jain and should apply for it. Apply for the program that is connected to your work experience. Accuracy of 80%ile will take you to around 97%ile and hence you should apply to NITIE and IITs also. Please check the B School Advisory on the Percentile Predictor page for the institutes that you should apply to.

  32. I took the CAT 2014 exam on 16th Nov slot 2 and managed to do 38 questions in total with an accuracy of 90-95%. I have put this data into the CL Predictor and it shows 84 percentile… After the normalization can i expect it to touch 90….???

  33. Hi sir,
A raw score of 175-185 will fall into what percentile range ?
Also is a score of 60-65 sufficient to clear Verbal cut-off(90%tile)? or what score will translate to 90%tile acc to you in VA ? An approximation is needed by you.
I will apply for colleges acc to that only.
    Nov 22 morning slot,

    • Anupam, please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. My estimate is that 175-1865 should be around 99.5%ile. In my estimate a score of 60 will be sufficient to clear the VALR sectional cutoff.

      • But Sir, percentile predictor is showing it has not been revised after 21st Nov so how do i go with same prediction for 22nd nov slots? will this percentile prediction be revised for 22nd nov slots as well ?

  34. Hello sir,

Please clear my doubt, I’m very confused. At the end of the test, the computer showed showed in one column that I answered 55 questions, another column was of marked for review but no column for answered and marked for review. Does this mean my attempts are 55 because I clearly remember that I answered 5 questions and marked them for review. Are these 5 questions included in answered column or will thae be added later on. In short, my attempts are 55 or 60? GP sir, please reply soon. I’m very confused.
    Thank you

      • GP Sir,
        I manually counted my attempts
38 in QADI section 36 answered and 2 answered but marked for review and 5 marked for review and rest unanswered.
I attempted 29 (Counted manually) 25 answered and 4 answered but marked for review and 3 just marked for review and rest unanswered.
and at the end of the paper it says
        36+25 = 61 Answered
        7+7 = 14 marked for review
        and 25 unanswered.

then What should I assume. 66 attempts which I actually did or 61 attempts???
        Please help.
I am sure I attempted 66 as I used to count it with every question I did.

          • Even I faced this issue…
While counting the attempts were higher but wen I saw my attempts ath the end of test it showed less than wat i had counted…
First i thought may be my mistake but wen i sqw ur comment..i realized it may be system issue
What can be done now ?????

  35. GP Sir,

I am new to this world (Of CAT), so I came t know about you only recently!
Sir, I appeared first day-first show (i.e, 16 NOV Morning slot).

I attempted 65 ques(33+32) trying to keep a balanced approach. I strategised for 50 ques+-10 ques based on difficulty.
Based on my standards, I performed well attempying +15 ques.

I came out and saw most of my frnds attempted 65+.
Adding to my woes(and really screwing me up) was the fact that 22 NOv students (thanks to predetermined mindsets, not necessarily difficulty of paper) attempted 90 ques at an avg. ok 85 as an avg (90 ques could be exaggeration).

    SO MY QUES:
Will normalization be able to take care of this huge gap. I mean hw can you even compare 65 ateempts with 85+ attempts?

I saw GATE normalization formula, it overemphhasizes 50-100 top students only.

    AT LAST,
Can you please elaborate on my expected percentile, and future.
I am a final year student with a job offer from Oracle, 90%+ in 10th and 12th, tremendously quite good extra-curricular(a lot of awrds, positions of responsibility), good communication and writing skills (won debates and all).

    MAIN QUESTION:
Should I wait for experience or take up an offer(obviously, if I get one ffrom Older IIMS)?

I have been searching for this answer hope your experience helps and guides me.

    Regards,
    RaHul Gupta

    • EDIT:

I expect accuracy to be over 80%, maybe over 85%. Actually, as always Verbal accuracy cannoyt be predicted (by me, ofcourse).

      PS:
Sorry for the loooooooong post 🙂

      • Rahul, CAT has not clearly specified the normalisation formula that will be used by them, they have said that it will be similar to GATE. The students who took the paper on 22nd had an advantage but I think the normalisation process be able to nullify the advantage.
Please submit your attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. My estimate is that 65 attempts with 55 correct should get you a 99%ile.
Given that you have a good job offer, go for MBA only if it is from a top MBA institute. In case you decide to go for a retake go for CAT’15 because the earlier you do an MBA the better it is for your career. Call me at 9811155160 in case you want to discuss this further.

    • Sir I am MBA Grad from IISWBM Kolkata & having Industry Experience of 6 years, also qualified NET from Management Paper twice for Lecturership. & getting in the range of 80-87%ile as per CAT %ile predictor. What is the chances of call from IIM A,B,C,L,I & K.

As well as what are the chances of call from other new IIMs like IIMT,Kashipur,Udaipur,Raipur,Rohtak,Shillong. What is generally cutt off for FPM programme for these new IIMs.

      • Deepak, interview calls are unlikely for PGP at you score and given your profile my suggestion is to take GMAT and go for 1 year MBA program of top IIMs and ISB.
FPM is fine and you have a chance of calls from the new IIMs, given your profile a call is possible from some of the old IIMs also.

  36. Dear sir,I attended cat 22 nov morning slot i attempted 24 questions overall (12 QA and 12 VA) with more than 90-95% accuracy. what do you think about percentile?

  37. Sir,
    1) Are the IIM’s releasing an answer key for CAT 2014? IF yes, then do u have any idea how many days (approx) are they gonna take for it?
    2) Can we expect our normalized scores (by cl %ile predictor) to be out by this friday? (28/11)
    3) Sir, though I estimate my score to be around 130, i estimated it to be 110 in the worst case scenario, when i entered this value in the clpp it showed a %ile of 84. I was quite surprised to see a %ile of just 84 from a score of above 100! I gave my CAT on 16th, second slot, do u think the normalization is gonna affect my %ile positively coz this has got me scared! Can’t afford to get below 90…Is there any way i might still be abe to reach 90%ile with a 110 score?

    • Nikita,
      1. I hope they will but I don’t know if they will.
      2. Yes
      3. This is the first year of the Percentile Predictor based on the new pattern CAT and hence it might need some fine tuning but given the level of difficulty of the paper and the attempts by the candidates I do not think that 110 marks will lead to 90%ile. Suggest that you focus on SNAP and XAT.

  38. Sir can you please bring out a post on how to move forward with the preparation of SNAP and XAT.
It will be a great help for all the aspirants.

  39. Sir, I have attempted 54 on 22 nd Nov, 2nd slot CAT exam. 21 in QA with 80% accuracy and 33 in VA/LR with 75% accuracy. I tried the score predictor and it says 80-85%. Sir do u think there is any chance of scoring over 90%?

  40. Dear Sir;

I appeared for 22 nd nov morning slot, I attemped 24 overall questions ( 12 Qa + 12 VA ) with more than 90% accuracy. I belong to OBC & PH category. what would be my percentile.
    Thanks for help

  41. Hello Sir,

It was my first CAT attempt. Didnt go for any mocks(my bad). So wasnt able to manage time and accuracy. Managed to attempt 17 and 23… Wont be asking for percentile etc as that CAT will reveal. Just want when can we expect Analysis of 2nd slot as I consider it to be tougher than other slots (Just my opinion).

Other thing I would like to know is how to proceed form here on. When CL test series are going to start?

any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    • Shiva, you are right possibly 22nd evening slot was the most difficult because of a difficult RC passage and a few questions with close choices in VA and we will be releasing our estimate tomorrow.
Are you taking other MBA entrances, SNAP and XAT, or are you looking at CAT’15?
The CL CAT’15 test series is likely to start in Mar’15.

      • sir, another leading coaching institute is predicting 90% for a raw score 96-98.But Cl predictor shows it in the 70% range…why there is such a huge difference?

        • vv14, the percentile predictor is based on the data supplied by all of you and hence I would go by what it says. It has also be normalised for the relative level of difficulty of the four slots. I cannot comment on the reason for the other coaching institute giving a higher percentile at the same score.

  42. Hello Sir!
I attempted CAt on 22nd Nov 1st Slot:
Attempts 40 in each section with accuracy around 80% in Sec-1 and 60-70 % in Sec-2. What percentile can i expect?
    I belong to OBC category.

      • Sir, I have already checked on the Percentile Predictor, it says Conservative estmate of ~95 and Optimistic~98percentile. But this was updated on 21st Nov itself, so my doubt is : Is it correct for Nov 22 attempt??
And 1 more question is that with these percentile and work ex of around 2 and half years will I get any IIM(older) calls??

        • Prince, normalisation will be done in a couple of days and it will change the percentile only scores marginally because as per my data the level of difficulty of the four papers was the similar.
Most old IIMs are unlikely at this score but IIM B is possible due to you work experience.

          • Sir, is it not possible at a range of 95-98 percentile, even though I come under NC-OBC category??

          • Prince, I assumed general category, my apologies for the miss. As a NCOBC candidate you can get calls from all IIMs.

  43. Sir, I attempted 69 (28+41) questions on Slot 1,16th Nov. with 85% accuracy in Part 1 & 80% accuracy in Part 2. What could be my percentile given that normalization does have some effect on our actual score??

    • Kaustabh, please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. My estimate is 69 attempts with 57 correct should lead to a score of around 99%ile. We will be coming out with the normalised scores by the end of this week.

  44. Hello Sir.

This is related to NMAT and IIFT.

I got 209 in NMAT in my first take. This is a very dicey score and I do not know whether I should go for the another take or not. As last years cut off was 208, I am really in a fix. Please guide me on the same.

My IIFT score will be 33.76 according to CL’s assessment. I am really disheartened seeing the fact that your estimate cut off will be in the range of 35-36. However, are there any chances of the cut off reaching around my score? Though I strongly believe the cut off will be around 38 as that score is achievable. I don’t want a few really silly mistakes to cost me a call from IIFT!

    Thank you.

      • Param, you will most probably get a call from NM Mumbai your sectional scores are okay but at 209 you are on the edge. My expectation of overall cutoff is 208 marks.

    • Param, go for a retake of NMAT, you will most probably be short listed for NM Mumbai but you are on the edge and I do not think it is worth taking a chance.
Unfortunately you are below our estimated cutoff by a couple of marks and I do not think that the cutoff will go down to your score. Predicting cutoff is tricky business and I will not be surprised if it goes up to 38.

  45. Do marked for reviews with selected options are considered as answered while calculating marks in cat bcz while submitting it showed only 26 answered (which were green), but I ticked on 7 more and marked the review(i.e purple sign with tick mark).
    Plz enlighten its really imp.

    • Abhinav, marked for review with the selected option and “saved” are counted as attempts – violet with a tick mark on top. It is possible that you did not save the answers. If you did then file a complaint with CAT Center.

      • Sir,
        Same here.

My final score (quant) was shown as:

31 attempted; 12 unattempted and 7 marked for review.
I clearly remember answering two questions and marking them for review(purple with a tick mark).

Are you sure that it is a problem?

          • Same here. According to me, I attempted 35 Q in Verbal, but my final summary showed 33. I counted very carefully and I am damn sure there is an error.

Where can we mail the CAT center, sir?

          • Sir, this is definitely the case. In my summary page too, it didnt add attempted questions marked for review in answered tab. i know my attempts. E-mailing the helpdesk would help now.. isn’t it too late ?

          • Visharad, if you are sure about this then you should inform CAT center, you should not only email but also send a letter by registered post to CAT center.

  46. What should be the expected cut offs for the six new IIMs which are gonna be operational from this year? Also should these IIMs be preferred over the likes of XIM, SIBM according to you? Please bring out an article on the six new IIMs . I am looking forward to the one which will open up in Maharashtra .

  47. Hello sir,

I had my exam on 22nd morning slot, I attempted 71 question 35 QA/DI and 36 VA/LR. I have with 85 percent accuracy in my mocks. What percentile should I expect. Can you please suggest other colleges I should apply to (like NITIE, IMI etc). I am a computer science engineer with 1 year experience in a leading MNC.
    Thank you.

    • Rohit, You should apply to NITIE, MDI, SP Jain etc as my estimate is over 99%ile.
Please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile, the B school Advisory on the same page will suggest the institutes that you should apply to.

    • Piyush, this year we have had mixed reviews of NMAT with the degree of difficulty of QA varying from moderate to difficult, rest of the paper is not difficult. Attempt the Mock NMATs given in your SIS for practice.

  48. Respected sir, when can we expect to get normalized percentiles in percentile predictor. Currently it says it was last updated on 21st nov.
    thank you.

  49. Sir can you please help me on how to prepare for these 5 weeks that I have for XAT. My CAT performance wasnt upto the mark. I really want to make the most of this time and do well in XAT.

    Thank you

  50. Sir, although paper in all slots were on similar lines but there were some differences, DI and LR of 16th Nov morning slot were very difficult which was not the case with other slots. Also people of other slots had prior knowledge of difficulty level of paper and hence attempted better than 1st slot, but CL percentile predictor didn’t take that normalisation factor into consideration . Please throw some light on it.

  51. Sir, I gave CAT on 22nd first plot. I attempted 61questions (31 is first, 30in 2nd) with good accuracy. I was very happy till I saw everyone else attempted 70-80. but still cl cat prediction is 97-98 percentile for me. is it possible. considering the no of attempts of others. also wt is the max mistakes I can make and still manage a 95+ percentile.

    Thanks in advance.

  52. Sir,
Do IIMs consider the type of questions you attempt…will a person who does LR be given preference over the one doing RC….?I think there is some serious problem with their marking scheme
    please clarify….

  53. Sir, I attemped 65 questions on 22nd November Slot 2 (32+33). I strongly feel my accuracý is above 80%, it may as well be 85%. I checked in CL predictor too. But I request you to give an honest opinion. Is it possible I cross 99% ile overall?

    • Sir, I would also like to know whether the normalized score will depend upon the difficulty level/type of a question one attempts or the raw score finally?! I understand it will be difficult for one to assert (and also that you yourself have petitioned for a transparent marking scheme), but would like to know your estimation on that! Thank you sir.

        • Thanks a lot Sir! One more thing I’d like to know from you is, what are my chances for (existing) new IIMs with that data (or, above 98%ile)?
CAT predictor shows my percentile range as 98.46-99.66. I kindly request you to give a frank opinion on the chances of a final convert (considering ideal WAT&PI) with percentile in that range and most importantly, with this data:
Graduation (B.E from MU): 58.xx My Xth-82.xx, XIIth-78.x Work ex- 7 months! Thank you sir!

          • Sam, you will get short listed for the new IIMs but conversion is a function of your performance in the Interview and associated processes.

    • Sam, I will be less accurate than the predictor, 52 correct answers out of 65 attempts or a net score of over 142 is unlikely to be 99%ile but you should be in the regio of 97%ile.

      • Thank you sir 🙂 but Actually, I just happened to recollect 30 questions out of the 32 I attempted in qadi section and re-attempted all of them. And I am 99% sure I have got 29 correct out of these 30. (And verbal too, I am quite certain of having minimum 24 correct out of 33). So any change in your prediction wrt that sir? I request you to revert back sir, this is really important. Thanks a lot!

        • Actually sir, just realised a mistake. So it egts modified to ‘I got 30 correct out of the 30 I recollected’. And I am quite sure.
Sir, and most importantly I would like to know if not attempting DI at all (although I did attempt 2 sub questions of a set, but that’s hardly anything) can affect your normalised score or is it just the raw score which will matter! Thanks you sir.

  54. Hi Sir,

I gave my CAT today on November 22nd, second slot, and I read your post on it, in the CAT section of careerlauncher website as well. In your article, you mentioned, 60+ attempts with 80% accuracy would get a 92%ile. I attempted 63 and I expect 90% accuracy, what would be the estimate for this ?

I already entered my data in the CL percentile predictor, which predicts 99%ile. However I have my doubts after reading through your article that 60+ attempts is 92 %ile. Can you mention what you think of my attempts ?

    Thanks.

  55. Sir,I attempted 61 ques in total (31 1st part,30 2nd) with good accuracy. I was very happy till i saw tht evry1 else hav attempted 70-80. but CL predictor predicts my %ile to be 97-98. Is it possible? considering the attempts of others.

  56. SIR,

I have almost 2 years experience now (TCS).
Should i consider MIB/MHROD as a good option after having experience ?

  57. sir,the predictor is predicting my percentile to be 78%.I took my cat on Nov 22 morning slot.at this percentile is there a chance to get call from any of these IIM (A,B,C,L,Indore, kozhikode) and fms??I belong to SC category.

  58. sir what is the reason that while we heard lot less people attempting above 70+ questions in first slot on 16th nov but as each and every slot passes almost everyone is attempting 80 .. will the 16nov first slot students will get any benefit by normalisation you think .

  59. 1. Sir I gave Nmat in slot 2. My scores :
    Qs-76 Ls-65 Lr-77 … Overall : 218
I know il clear cutoff but still do you think i should go for retake to improve or will this be enough ? As personally I think max that i can get is 225.. Not more then that..
    2. I gave cat in slot 2 morning and expecting a score of around 160-170 as I attempted 70 ques with 80-85% accuracy. I was really happy till i checked net and found that almost everyone has attempted 70-80. Feeling really disheartened. Acc to predictor i will get around 99%tile which does nt seem possible to me considering attempts of others.. Whats your view ?

    • Nishant, a retake is not required, you have a very good score.
Regarding CAT do not go only by the attempts, very high attempts are usually accompanied by lower accuracy and a score of 160-170 should result in 99%ile.

  60. Sir,

Now that second slot is over, please reveal your estimated marks for 99+ percentile.

    We’re waiting since 16th…..please.

  61. sir,
After the analysis of three slots from day 1 and day 2 together, What do you anticipate about the minimum attempts with corresponding accuracy for this year..
    Please reply.

  62. SIR i expect a score of 145-160 .. cl percentile predictor predicts 97 – 98.75.. how is this possible? every1 is attempting 70+ questions .. still CL believes 145 would give 97? sir please explain this a bit , as my mind is very tensed and i m not able to concentrate. had 94.xx last year , and 92 an year before that. Trying so much , still couldn’t clear that 99 percentile mark, 🙁 please reply

    • Abhishek, this is post the data submitted by all of you hence I think this is likely to be correct. Normalisation will be done this week and this might lead to a small change in the percentiles.

  63. Sir I was in 16th evening slot and CL conservative 67correct out of 79 questions predicted a 99.94 %ile but seeing the way people have attempted the paper today, it is sure to take a beating. What effect is normalisation going to have on it sir ? How much is my percentile going to be affected ? Will I fall too low ? I’m getting concerned

    • Edward, noramlisation is likely to benefit the slot 1 candidates. Will know its impact once we analyse the data of all four slots.

  64. Hello Sir,
I have an urgent query. The candidates who took CAT today surely had the upper hand of knowing the pattern as well as the difficulty level of the exam beforehand, while those who took it on 16th were not quite prepared to go for 70+ attempts. Do you think that normalization would take this fact into consideration? If not, wont the first slot students lose out?

  65. Sir, does it mean the one who has given test today will hve sheer advantage? as they r aware of the test difficulty level and bcoz of which they must hve attempted more question. Or will there any kind of normalization will happen. ??

  66. GP Sir,
I was just curious to know till when the True Percentile Predictor be further revised after CAT Day-2 and will CL try to incorporate Normalisation in the predictor?

    • Darpan, the percentile predictor was revised based on the data submitted by all of you. Normalisation will be done this week and and it could lead to a small change in the percentile scores.

  67. Sir, how accurate is the true cat percentile predictor and how does it predict the percentile. I have attempted 85 questions(qa-41 & va-44) with 75-80% accuracy (22nd nov 1st slot). What percentile can i expect?

    • Nikhil, please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile.
In the past percentile predictor has been fairly accurate but this being the first year of the new pattern we could see some variance.

  68. Hi sir,
What do you think, which slot will get benefited from normalization and which one will loose out?
    Just a rough prediction.
