CAT 2014 Analysis: Nov 16, Evening slot

The second slot of CAT 2014 is over and it was similar to slot 1. There were no surprises in the structure and the QADI section had 34 QA questions along with 16 DI questions in 4 sets of 4 questions each. In the VALR section, Verbal Logic and Usage contributed to 18 questions while LR and RC contributed to 16 questions each (4 sets of 4 questions each).

While the QA questions in this paper were possibly the easiest ever in CAT (as easy as CAT 2006), LR and DI were difficult and many students would have had a tough time trying to solve these sets. Verbal Logic and RC proved to be life savers in the second section.

The video analysis of both the morning and evening slot will be live by 11:00 PM, today.

  1. I wrote exam on 16th second slot.. i attempted 25 questions in QA/DI with 90 % accuracy and 16 questions in VALR with 80 % accuracy.. Will I get percentile around 85 and will I get seat in tapmi

  2. Sir, I am a final year B.Tech (CSE) student. This year the placement is on the lower side in our college. As of now I am not placed.
    This is my profile:
    X: 92%
    XII: 91.8%
    B.Tech: 78.3% (till sem 6)

Sir, my main aim is to get an MBA from a reputed college(IIM ABC, FMS etc). The sole reason why i want a job is to get experience, which will be value addition for getting into a good B-School.
But, looking at the present scenario, I think I need a plan B.
So, should I drop 1 year to prepare for CAT. Or will a drop reduce my chances of getting into a good college?
Also, Sir I do not have any extra curricular achievements.

    • Ashna, the best option is to pick up a job but if it is not possible then you have to go Plan B. Do not delay your preparation but start it immediately as about a year allows you to pace your preparation. You should also apply directly to companies and you may get a job.
The drop is not a major issue and can be explained in the interview.

  3. Sir,
I attempted 62 ques. in all on 16th evening slot with 23 in QA and 39 in VA with 80-85% accuracy (accuracy VA>accuracy QA).
    Can I cross 95%ile?

  4. sir, as per the latest update on percentile predictor, it show the same normalized percentile(99) in both my conservative as well as optimistic score, the scores being 169 and 193 respectively. sir is it possible to have the same percentile over a wide range of 24 marks? or does the normalized percentile have some different interpretation? please clarify sir..

  5. Dear Sir,

I gave CAT in afternoon slot on 16th Nov. I have attempted 54 questions. I am expecting a score of 130 atleast, sir what should be the percentile after normalization?

  6. SIR
    I have attempted 69(36+33)
The pp is predicting anywhere between 98.1 and 99.53 acc to the accuracy put in by me
    I have 80-85 in both 10 and 12 icse
    and 68 in bba
can normalisation and variance bring my percentile down below 97.5?
bschools i look for are iim k,i spjimr and mdi

      • and sir with my profile do i have a chance to get calls from iim i,k spjimr?i mean what percentile will i be needing for calls from these bschools(considering my profile)?
        TY in advance

        • Rahul, your profile is fine and you should not worry in this regard.
IIM A, B and Ca will need 99.5%ile
Other old IIMs, IIT Mumbai, FMS and JBIMS will need over 99%ile
New IIMs, other IITs, MDI, SP Jain are possible at 97.5%ile.

  7. sir was the difficulty level in the same slot same?
or was the overall difficulty same in all four slots, according to you.

  8. SIR, was the difficulty level for all the slots same? was it same in the same slot ?
Just wanted to know your opinion.
Me and my friend in different cities (center) got same paper set in the nov 22 evening slot. Would cat normalisation process also consider the variation of difficulty level in the same slot, if any.

    • Shubham, all students in the same slot got the same paper. The overall level of difficulty of all slots was same but the students who took the paper on 22nd had an advantage of knowing the paper structure but this should get nullified by normalisation.

  9. Hi Sir,
    Pls ignore my previous comment/query.

QADI: 33 Attempts: 1 is wrong for sure. Other than that around 90% accuracy.
VALR: 39 Attempts: All LRs are correct. All Parajumbles are correct(which were around 7). There may be a couple of mistakes in Grammar type questions and/or a couple in RCs.

    Xth Std: 76.2%
    XIIth: 80.4%
    B.Tech:76%
    Work Ex: 2.5 years.

Can i expect a call from colleges like FMS, MDI, SP Jain etc….also i doubt that A,B,C will be possible, but other than that are other IIMs possible with this kinda profile?

    • Ashu, Please submit your attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. My estimate is that with 72 attempts and 60 correct you should be over 99%ile and have a chance of calls from almost all IIMS including ABC. FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS.

  10. Sir,
I just gave a try of 14+16 questions in CAT 14(22 Nov Morning slot) .With 100 % accuracy in Quants and 85% accuracy in Verbal section.I would just like to know whether I ll be able to get into some good colleges.?

    • Divya, 30 attempts with 26 correct answers is unlikely to get you calls from any good B school. Suggest that you focus on SNAP.
Please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile.

  11. Sir according to your personal experience, feedback from students and estimate what score in this slot would be enough for a 99.9+ %ile. (Both most likely score prediction and in worst case scenario). I’m around the 200 mark in this slot

  12. Sir,
I gave my CAT on 16th Nov Slot 2.I attempted 61 questions.
    VA-31
    QA-30
Accuracy of about 85-90%.What are the chances of getting a call from the IIM’s ?.And what are the predicted cut-offs for Nasree Monjee Mumbai for this year?

  13. Sir,
I gave CAT on 16 Nov (II slot). But I was not able to make a good number of attempts. I attempted only 30 in Sec I and 22 in Sec II. I cannot say anything about accuracy; because while writing the exam we all feel that we are marking the right answer. But usually in mocks I used to have 90 % accuracy in Sec I and 65 % in Sec II. But in the exam, I feel that every PJ PC I marked, was based on proper judgement and not on a guess. My profile is as follows –
    Class X – 88
    Class XII – 93.4
    B.Com(H) – 73.7
    Cfa level 1 cleared
Work exp – 17 months in Finance.

Can you please suggest me colleges to which I should apply. Plus the percentile range which I can get.
    Thank you Sir…

    • Ronit, please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. The B school Advisory on the same page will also suggest the institutes that you should be applying to. Your profile is be a help in getting and converting interview calls.

  14. SIR, i wrote my cat exam on 16th, evening slot and my attmepts are QADI 31 and VALR 41. Assuming an accuracy of 85-90% (which i had in CL mocks), what percentile can i expect? The percentile predictor showed 99.9 but i think my QADI percentile might clamp that as many people have attempted 35+ in section 1. Moreover, i am unable to log into percentile predictor.. It shows some kind of server error..

    • Harsh, please try again using a different browser. The percentile predictor has been revised based on the data submitted by all of you. My estimate is that with 72 attempts and 60 correct answers you should be over 99%ile.

  15. Hi Sir.Gave CAT on 16th morning slot. But evening was even easier judging from the no of attempts of people in evening slot. What difference in score can be expected for a 99% between the two slots ?? CL percentile predictor says 99.9x%ile at late 170’s – early 180s.What’s ur opinion on this estimate sir ??

    • Naksrocks, I will go by this since it is based on the data submitted by all of you. Normalisation will obviously modify this a little for the four slots.

  16. Hi Sir
I gave paper on 16 Nov 2nd slot.
My attempts are Quants 32(80% accuracy) and Verbal 28 (70% accuracy). Will my percentile cross 90 percentile.

  17. Hello Sir,

I have to take CAT on 22 morning. As suggested by you, I have attempted sectional 21 of VA-LR. Found it a little inclined on the difficult side. I could attempt 37 but get only 24 correct. 🙁
How many correct attempts would be ideal in such a paper?

    Thanks.

  18. sir,
would digital watcheswith the seconds n everything shown be allowed for the iift exam to keep track of the time? being my first attempt not aware of anything

  19. sir, i am vivek.
I had my cat on 16th eve slot.
My QA attempt is 27 with more than 90% accuracy..
VA 22 attempt, 12 of LR all correct…10 of language not sure about accuracy there but it should be around 60%-70%….
    NC-OBC
    10th:- 88.43
    12th:- 76.3
    B.E:- 61.23
work experience 28 month as service engineer at privet own medium size industry. with good exposure to overseas customers….
I have dream to be in IIM-C…. can i be there…

      • my percentile will fall in 90 to 96 range according to percentile predictor.which other institute i should focus including new IIM…..is there any chance of IIM L, K, I..including new IIMS…??

  20. Sir,
I took the Modified Mock CAT 2006 paper.
I attempted 57 questions and had 6 incorrect giving me a score of 147.However i would like to point out that 3 questions in the QA section had the correct option missing,i could verify this only after looking at the actual paper (CAT 2006) on the internet.
So barring these incorrect questions( incorrect because the correct option was missing) if i take my true score it comes out 158.
Would you say that this is a good score or i am still a little short of an ideal ‘IIM call percentile’

    • Abjeek, thanks for pointing out the error. Will have them checked and rectified.
The QA in Modified CAT 2006 is of the level of 16 nov CAT papers but its VL and RC are much more difficult and hence 147 is a good score and the equivalent in 16th Nov paper is likely to be 165-170 which would be around 99.5%ile and hence acceptable.

  21. Sir,
I have attempted Section Test 21 of QA as prescribed by you. I managed to score 80 in that. I just wanted to ask you these new tests which have been added are a tad bit easier than actual cat or meant to be at par with the expected level on the 22nd ?? I am asking you this question because although I have scored 80 , I don’t want to get carried away and prepare myself mentally for the expected level of difficulty. 🙂

  22. Sir,
My exam is on the 22nd second slot.
From what I gather, accuracy is the key in this year’s cat.
My question is what can be the sectional cut off marks for this year considering the relatively easy qa paper and tougher side lr.
I don’t want to end up attempting too many and get 75-80% accuracy.I want to optimize my attempts to get better accuracy.

  23. Hello Sir;

I have attempted 35 in the first section with around 85% accuracy and 39 in the second section with similar accuracy. Could you suggest a realistic estimate of my percentile.
And more importantly Sir I have not yet applied to any b schools. So could you suggest which colleges can I still apply to.

  24. qa 22 net correct and
    VA 18 net correct
    an obc candidate
can i expect calls from iims.?
    please reply
thanks gp sir for all your support

    • Aditya, with 40 net correct answers you should be over 95%ile and hence calls are possible from the IIMs. Please enter your data in the Percentile Predictor for an estimate, it will also give you the list of B schools that you should apply to.

  25. Dear Sir,
    I took CAT on 16th 2nd slot.
    Attempted 80 (40 + 40)
I attempted 3 sets of DI , all the sets of LR and 2 RCs. I am sure that these have been answered correctly. I took a calculated risk in 3-4 quants questions (using SQC and logic ). In the Verbal section (18 questions) i answered all of them and approximately 65-70 percent should be correct (as per my mocks). overall i think i should get around 65 questions correct. Any chances of IIM A/B/C calls ? , General , work exp- 6 months, B.tech – 93.6 , 12th – 78 , 10th – 91. what percentile can i expect?.

    • Chandru, you have a good chance of call from all IIMs since my estimate is a 99%ile but for a more accurate number please enter your data in the Percentile Predictor for an estimate, it will also give you the list of B schools that you should apply to.

  26. GP Sir,
I had my CAT on 16th Nov, 2nd Slot.
    I had 55 attempts. ( 23 (QADI) + 32 (VALR) )
Expecting an accuracy of around 90% in QADI and 80-85% in VALR.
Sir will my QADI be sufficient enough to clear the cut offs for old IIMS atleast?

  27. Sir I am a CL student and My aim is 99.5 percentile plus. My CAT is on 22nd, please suggest the number of attempts (considering same difficulty level) for this target. My accuracy is good (most of the times above 80% overall) and I want to get an honest feedback that, people are able to attempt 80-90 questions also (no doubt they are well prepared too) but still 80-90 questions is a great deal for 170 minutes. So was the paper on 16th that easy sir?

    • Sam, QA was easy on 16th but DI and LR were not and most of the students who have attempted 80+ questions would have attempted at least 2 sets each of DI and LR and also would have attempted 30+ out of 34 QA questions in about 50-55 minutes. Check out the Modified CAT 2006 QA section and the new sectional tests and see if you can work at this pace, if no then set realistic targets for yourself otherwise you will have a very low accuracy and hence a lower score. However around 65-70 attempts with a good accuracy should not be a problem.

  28. Sir,
I have attemted 17 QA/DI & 24 VA/LR questions with 90% accuracy on 16th Nov evening slot.. how much percentile can i expect? & plzz suggest some institutes..
    Background:-
    10th:- 90.37%
    12th:- 90.60%
    Grad:- 69%

  29. Sir
I could not find any test for 22nd November CAT in the Online Mocks section of SIS portal although I had got message regarding the same in SIS mailbox.
    Please help!!

  30. Sir,
In your last video session you talked about mock cat 18 and 21. I could not find mock 21 as they are till 20. Is that mock 2 or some other mock u were talking? Please specify !!!!

    • Siddharth, I had talked about Mock CAT 18 and CAT 2006.
Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests are avialable in you SIS. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks.

  31. Dear Puri Sir, Can you give some idea on the range of percentile expected for a FPM call from the older IIMs, considering other factors like Acads, profile etc. are met.

  32. Sir, I am male and from obc category.

    10th- 85.69%,
    12th- 73.80%,
    BE ECE – 75.20%,
Having 18 months of work exp IT MNC.
    1+ year working with NGO.

How many %ile required for me to get into IIM A ?

  33. Sir I attempted total 37 question in CAT 16 nov. morning slot. 16 in QADI and 21 in VALR with 90% and 80% accuracy respectively. Do u think that i cross the band of 80%ile.
    NC OBC candidate.
    10-67%
    12-78%
    BBA-73%

will i get calls from newer IIMs.

  34. Sir, I have attempted 21 questions in QA/DI and 19 in LR/VA part..I am sure about my quant section..but little doubtful in 5 6 questions of Verbal section.can I reach 90 percentile score ?

  35. Sir ,

I attempted 60 questions ( QA 28 , VA 32 ) and expecting around 55 to be correct. Can i expect to get any IIM call ? Also please tell me which all colleges i should target..

    Profile :
    Category – General
B Tech – Mining Engineering , NIT Surathkal
Work ex : 3 yrs as retail consultant and sales professional
    10th , 12th & Graduation – 75%

    Thanks in advance..

    • Sir,

My percentile predictor says it will be around 99.2 but don’t you think this is a bit on the higher side given the fact that paper was not that difficult..Also Can i expect to get get calls from Top colleges if i score around 99 perc given my 10th and 12th percentage..

  36. i have attempted overall 36 questions with 90% accuraqcy like i think at most 3 can be wrong what can be my percentile

  37. Hi Sir,

I am a student of CL (PEX). I saw the video analysis of CAT’14 that you have recently posted in CL’s site. I found you referring to Mock CAT 21 but was unable to find the same in the Online Mock section of SIS. Could u please provide the information as to where can I find it?

    • Anagh, it appears that I have made a mistake. It should be Mock CAT 18, additionally four CAT based Sectional Tests 21 and 21 have been added in Test Gym Classic and Modified CAT 2006 has been added in Online Mocks.

  38. Sir id appreciate your guidance
the predictor shows my percentile as 99.7 for 155
i attempted 23 in qa and am sure all of them are correct. and 33 i va and have been consistently getting 99 percentile in most mocks in va section. sir im only intersted in fms and would like to know if 99.7 is an inflated percentile according to this years trends

    • cat worried, the percentile predictor will be revised based on the data submitted by all of you and normalisation will also be done after all four slots are done.

  39. Hello Sir,
i attempted a total of 46 questions in CAT
20 in QA and 26 in VALR…what percentile can i expect if i get a score of about 110?

  40. Sir..till now in every mock i use to attempt VALR section first..
bt nw should i attempt QADI section first on 22..because QA came easy on 16 and lr came tough…
    what shud i do?
nd how many attempts will be sufficient to get above 90 percentile?

    • Piyush, go by what you are comfortable because we do not know if the paper on 22nd will be similar to the one on 16th. You could however try this strategy on the sectional tests and Mock CAT 18 and then decide.

      • Sir..can this happen?
dat on 22..lrdi come easy instead of QA..as it was easy on 16??
SIr..i feel comfortable to attend first VALR section first?
but now i m in confusion?

  41. Sir,
    I attempted 81 questions in CAT 2014 on 16th, slot2.
    (40+41)
    Background:
    10th-96.2%
    12th-93.2%
    B.E +M.Sc(Dual Degree)-59.99%
    No work exp.

Assuming 80-90% accuracy, What IIM calls should I expected? What about FMS?

    • Payal, you have a good chance of calls from all IIMs and FMS. Please check the Percentile Predictor for an estimate of your percentile. The percentile requirement for a general category candidate is:
      1. 99.5%ile for IIM A & C.
      2. 99%ile for other old IIMS, FMS and IIT Mumbai.
      3. 97.5%ile for new IIMs, other IITs, MDI, NITIE and SP Jain.

  42. Sir,

The QA section of Mock 18 & CAT 2006 papers have more of Algebra, Geometry, Numbers and P&C. Could this be an expected trend for this section on 22nd Nov.

  43. Sir
I’ll be appearing for cat on 22 in second slot how many attempts do you suggest for calls from newer imm’s not proposed ones but kashipur, rohtak ones

  44. Sir, i gave my exam in the afternoon slot on nov 16. I attempted 32 questions in section 1 and 24 in section 2. Assuming my accuracy to be 85 – 90%. CL percentile predictor has predicted my percentile to be 98+. Is that accurate enough?? If not, will i be able to cross 95 ? sir, i also have nc obc reservation. Can i expect any calls from the old iims??

    • Damini, in the past the percentile predictor has proved to be accurate but this time we are working without any past data. After 22nd Nov we will be normalizing the 4 papers and based on the data submitted by al of you come out with revised & normalised percentiles.
As a NC OBC candidate you can expect calls from old IIMs.

  45. Sir,
The cat percentile predictor predicts the overall percentile…but maximum colleges have sectional cut off too. So according to you what should be the likely cut off for quant and lr sections on the basis of day 1 analysis ?

  46. SIR
    i have attempted total 54 ques quant-31 and VA-23
whats the percentile band i would be in i have seen the percentile predictor but i want your advise too.
my accuracy is roughly around 90%.

  47. Sir,
Some websites have mentioned that there were 3 FIJ questions. Is it true? Please answer. And you mentioned that 4 new sectional tests would be uploaded. When will that happen?

    Regards ,
    Binay

    • Binay, FIJ have not been reported by any student. Two sectional tests easch of QADI and VALR (no 21 and 22) are available in SIS – Test Gym Classic – CAT Based Sectional Tests. Modified CAT 2006 is available in the Online Mocks.

  48. Sir,

    I had attempted 17 in QA/DI and 15 in VA/LR. Considering 80% accuracy will I cross 80 percentile band?Can I apply to Nirma University. 10th 84.61%, 12th 86.17% and graduation 81.40%. work Exp 14 months.

    • Rohit, 32 attempts may not be sufficient for 80%ile, suggest that you enter your data in the Percentile Predictor for an estimate, it will also give you the list of B schools that you should apply to. Nirma would normally require more than 85%ile

  49. Sir, I have attempted 21 questions in QA/DI section and 19 in VA/LR section..I am sure about my quant section but little doubtful in 5-6 questions of VA part…can I reach around 90 %le ? and speciallyI am worried about the no. Of attempts by others which are not going below 55-60 😀
    Kindly reply
    Thanks

  50. Sir,
My slot is on the 22nd (forenoon session).Should i revise all the mock cats? or should i focus on selective ones. The news is mock cat 18 is more likely the CAT paper.I have covered the necessary papers from 2000-2008 and also from 1990-1999.
What should be the focus on the last three days now?

    • Abheek, based on 16th Nov paper apart from Mock CAT 18 you can take the newly uploaded tests – Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests (No. 21 and 22) in your Test Gym Classic. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks.

  51. sir i gave my cat on 16th 2nd slot and attempted 24 in sec1 hope to get around 18 correct and 38 un sec 2 and hope to get around 32 correct .. will i be able to clear the sectional cutoffs as per IIM’s?

    • skr, you may miss out on the sectional cutoff of section 1 for IIMs but let us hope for the best. Most of the institutes outside IIMs, MDI, SP Jain do not have sectional cutoffs and look at only the overall cutoff.

    • Sushant, they are available in the SIS. Modified CAT 2006 in Online Mocks and the sectional tests in Test Gym Classic – CAT based tests.

  52. sir,

as my cat didnt go well , so my only hope is xat. will u give me some ideas the things i need to start study to do good in xat besides QA & LRDI?
and what is the minimum percentile required (section wise & overall) to get call from XLRI & XIMB .

    • sir ,

i want to say say one more thing.

i am disappointed with cat 2014 , in cat 2012 the paper was similar to the cl mocks,
this time time they made the paper so easy that i got confused in VA section & keep thinking that there are twists “cat cant be that easy” & until i reach to the QA & LR i realize paper is really easy & i made a blunder by thinking too much. Now I realize why Gezo sir always insist on scanning the paper for 10 minutes

cat 2014 acually sucks (pardon my language, i have to take out my frustration somewhere),
student whose xam is on 22nd nov has a rally big advantage & nobody should help them, its a competition.

        • Sir,
CL percentile Predictior showing that i can get 99.4 percentile. But i think its not possible coz i attemped only 68 ques & i think 10 of them will be wrong.

          • Ravi, 99.4%ile is possible at 164 marks however the Percentiles will be revised after 22nd Nov based on the data submitted by students and after normalization of the four papers.

      • Ankur, this is where the normalisation process comes in, the advvantage of information will give all of them better performance and hence their scores will be adjusted downwards. You have done what you could in the paper nd it is time to forget it and move on to the other papers – IIFT, SNAP and XAT.

    • Ankur, apply to SNAP also since SIBM Pune and SCMHRD are both very good institutes. The XLRI cutoffs in XAT are:
BM: Verbal 70%ile, DM 80%ile, QA 90%ile, Total 95%ile. A total of 30+ with a double digit score in each section is usually sufficient for these scores.
      HRM: Verbal 80%ile, DM 80%ile, QA 70%ile, Total 90%ile

  53. Hello Sir,
I have my exam on 22nd.I am not really comfortable with venn diagrams. What is the best source to practice the kind of venn diagrams being asked?

  54. Sir,

I had my CAT on 16th Nov [Evening Slot].
    I had 53 attempts with ( 23 QADI +30 VALR).
As far as I have seen, a buzz has made an impact that the QADI was very easy and almost everyone had good attempts.
I couldn’t optimise my attempts accordingly.
I am hopeful to end up with 90+ accuracy considering both the sections. But my major worry is the cutoff of QADI. Is this a thing to worry about?
I am a fresher with career in 80’s in 10th, 12th and Grads.
And I would like to know if a profile like this is suitable for MDI , SPJIMR ?

    Thank You.

    • Ricky, I do not expect QADI cutoff to be above 55 and hence if you have 20 correct in this section you should be able to clear the sectional cutoff. Your profile is fine for SP Jain and MDI.

  55. Sir i attempted 56 questions
    23 in qa/di
    33 in va/lr
i know all 23 questions in qa di are correct and have consistently been getting 99 percentile in valr section in the mocks.sir i expect a my score will be in the 145-155 range what is the percentile i can expect i think the percentile predictor is a bit infllate as it showed 99.7 percentile for 155 marks. kindly reply

    • cat worried, the percentile predictor will be revised based on the data submittd by all of you and it will also be normalised after all four slots are over. With an expected score of 145+ you should be over 99%ile.

  56. Sir,

I attempted 81 questions in all.
    QADI-40
    VALR-41
Assuming 80-90% accuracy, could i be in the 99+ percentile range?
    also, my background:
    10th- 96.2%
    12th-93.2%
    B.E.-59.9%
    M.Sc.-59.99%
    female, general category
    No Work experience

What IIMs should i expect to get a call from? What about FMS?

    • Payal, you wll be in the 99%ile range and have a chance of calls from all IIMs and FMS. Please enter you data in the Percentile Predictor for an estimate and it will also give you the list of B schools that you should apply to.
      Do apply to JBIMS also.

  57. my question is i am slightly weak at quant and my cat test is on 22 hat should i do in quant within these 4 days…..rest am a gud at rc,lr and di

  58. Hello Sir,
I have attempted total 51 questions with
    sec1 – 27 ( min 24 correct )
    sec2 – 24 ( min 21 correct)
but with people claiming that they have attempted 70+ and some even 80 – 90 . I doubt that I can even get in 80s. Could you please guide me what level of colleges are with in my reach with such an attempt.?
    I am from general category with 89 % in 10th , 83% in 12th ans 73% in Btech.
Also, I entered these numbers in percentile predictor and it is predicting 98 – 99 percentile. But as many people would not have entered there attempts in this software so i think this prediction may not be correct.
Could you please help with these 2 things sir.
    Thank you. 🙂

    • Priya, in an easy paper accuracy is important and hence I will not go by the attempts only. With a net score of 129 you should be above 95%ile. The estimates will be revised based on the data submitted by all of you and after all four slots are done we will be normalising the scores also.

  59. Sir, i attempted 64 questions , second slot , first day.
32 in section 1 with >90% accuracy. And 32 in Section 2 with 80-85% accuracy. Expecting a minimum of 155. Where do i stand?

  60. Hello Sir,
I think the True Percentile predictor is predicting on the basis of CL Mocks and not on the basis of actual CAT level because it is predicting 99 percentile even on a low score of 140 (what was like in mocks).
    Thanks and regards
    Ashutosh

    • Ashutosh, it has been updated but will be re-revised based on the data submitted by all of you. After 22nd November normalisation will also be done.

  61. Sir,
Will the normalization be slot specific? Means percentile depends much on the candidates writing the exam in my slot?

  62. Sir, for LR-DI what should be the preperation strategy for next 4 days. Are similar LR based on arrangements and assignment are going to be there on 22 also ?

    • Soumi, based on 16th Nov paper apart from Mock CAT 18 you can take the newly uploaded tests – Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests in your Test Gym. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks.

  63. Hi Sir,
I wrote Cat on 16th Nov’14 . I am unable to navigate through the link Percentile Predictor. Please advise asap. Also could you help me find the list of schools to apply to, after prediction of my standing….

  64. sir,
i have a doubt i gave my cat on 16th 2nd slot..always while giving the mocks i used to start from va/lr section & i did the same on D-day but when i started from english i couldn’t answer anything with surety and wasted alot of time though va/lr was easy. i completely freaked out & then started with QA/DI..I am still confused from which section should we really start as per the mocks va/lr was my strength and i always started from it.plz guide me sir for the apt section to start from i am really confused..

    • Krishi, this is an individual choice/preference. You should start with a strong area but be willing to leave questions from there in case you encounter difficult questions.

  65. Sir,
I used to have an accuracy of near about 80% in CL mocks. My attempt was 91 in the 2nd slot on 16th. I am expecting 200 raw score in a worst case scenario. Will it be enuf to touch the 99.9 mark barrier??

  66. Sir,
I have taken a lot of CL mocks. In those mocks my attempts are usually 45 to 48 largely because I am not too good with maths. I attempt nearly 32 questions in VA section and Nearly 15 in QA/DI in the mocks. Given that the mocks are a notch higher in difficulty than the real cat for QA this time, How many attempts in the QA/DI section should I aim for?

  67. Hello Sir
    I have two questions:
    1. I attempted 82 (38+44) in the morning slot on 16th.
How many do you think I can afford to get wrong put of these and still end up with a 99+ percentile?
The percentile predictor currently shows a 99.99 for me, but m sure it’ll come down as it gets more data.
    2. If there was a question that I marked for review, and later answered. In the final summary, is that question included In the questions attempted or in the marked for review questions?

    Thanks.

    • Anand, yes the percentile predictor will be revised based on the data submitted by all of you and normalisation will be done after 22nd Novemnber.
I expect a score of 155-160 to be around 99%ile
If you have answered the question it will be recorded as an attempt. The review does not matter.

  68. Hello Sir

If i have to give one more mock which mock it should be from career launcher . I have given all mocks till 18 . Which should i give as a last touch to my preparation if i have to give one?

    Avi

    • Avi, based on 16th Nov paper apart from Mock CAT 18 you can take the newly uploaded tests – Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests in your Test Gym. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks.

  69. GP sir,
In the article “How many attempts for an IIM call?”, you had mentioned that 50 net correct attempts should fetch 99.5 percentile. But CL’s CAT analysis shows around 30-35 attempts per section for a good score. So would you revise your original estimates or still stick with them?

  70. SIr,
My Cl percentile predictor score is around 85. How different can be my real score from the predicted score? My Cat is on 22nd, should I take some more mocks or just do revision and analysis of previous mocks?

    • Raul, Attempt Mock CAT 18, Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests in Test Gym classic. You can revise DI and LR from the earlier Mocks.

  71. Sir, some webistes have estimated the score and percentile range as follows –
    1) 120+ = 90 percentile
    2) 140+ = 95 percentile
    3) 176+ = 99 percentile
I am expecting a net score of around 117-120. Does that implies i wont even be in the 90 percentile range? Do you think these estimates are accurate or a bit too high?

  72. Sir, there are some people claiming to have attempted all 100 questions. I sincerely doubt their claims. I attempted overall 65 questions, but looking at these guys, i dont think i will make it to even the the 98 percentile range.

    • Jai, I do not see any reason to disbelieve those who claim to have attempted 90+ questions but accuracy in VALR will be the deciding factor in the paper.

      • sir i have attempted 31 questions in QA and expecting a good accuracy in that..
34 in verbal section but not sure of accuracy..maybe around 80%
        my target is 97-98 percentile..
do u think it is good enough looking the level of paper?

  73. Sir, I have borrowed a friend’s SIS with all mocks intact (she is heading towards GMAT), and my d-day is 22nd so I want to know which 2 mocks should I finally give during today and tomorrow? I mean which 1 or 2 mocks do you feel will give me the closest-to-actual feeling?? Thanking you.

  74. Sir,
On 15th Nov. you made certain estimates regarding the percentile equivalents of raw scores. After analysing the two slots,do you think there will be any change in the estimates,or will it remain more or less the way you had predicted?

    • Soumak, the percentile predictor has incorporated the changes and it will be revised further based on the data being collected from the students.

  75. Sir, I attempted CAT on 16th 2nd Slot… I am very sure there was a question for which the options were wrong. None of them matched. What would happen for these types of question? I still remember the question correctly.

  76. Hello GP Sir. My attempts (QA-DI 45+ VA-LR 34) = 79 in 16th’s evening slot. I expect roughly about 65-75 of them to be correct and would guess 70 (to be exact). CL PP shows 99.98 conservative and 99.99 optimistic percentile but that would mean only 10-50 students who have better scores than this all over India (seems far-fetched). Would the CAT PP by CL be revised soon seeing the way people have given the paper ?
Moreover for my case of about 70 correct out of 79 what percentile do you personally think is likely ? (My ‘most likely’ prediction after all CL mocks was 99.89 so somewhere around that ?).
I would also like to thank you and the entire CL Roorkee team for support throughout my preparation for CAT.
    -Student of CL Roorkee

    • Mir, the CAT PP will be revised based on the data submitted by the students and after 22nd Nov the scores will be normalised as well. I expect you to be over 99.9%ile.

  77. Sir,

I have my exam on the 22nd Nov.(evening slot).
I want to know that since the question papers in both the slots were not so difficult, what should be my strategy if my accuracy is 80%.
I want to get an idea that approx how much score(range) should a person aim at to get above 90ile.
Also, what should we expect regarding the difficulty level of the questions on the 22nd,will it be in the same pattern(i.e. QA easy..LR moderate-difficult) or there is a probability that the difficulty level may vary (eg. QA difficult and LR easy)..very confused sir..please help.

    • Namrata, while I expect the paper on 22nd to be similar in terms of difficulty level to the one on 16th but one cannot be sure hence go by your standard way of attempting the paper. However 15 minutes into a section you should be able to assess the level of difficulty of the section and make appropriate changes. Also do not get stuck with difficult questions or DI/LR sets. Remember you task is to attempt the easiest questions first.

  78. Sir My attempt (evening slot) is 54 QA/DI- 25 and LR/VA – 27
with approx 48-50 Questions correct. How much percentile can I expect. Just 1 DI and 2 LR attempted. Wasted a lot of time on both sub sections.

  79. Sir attempted 69 questions in 16th November 2nd slot. QA+DI=31 VA+LR=38 If I consider 70% accuracy then in percentile predictor it is showing 91+ percentile. So if I get 85+ percentile will i get call from the new IIMs and IIT kanpur and KGP? I have SC reservation. And should I apply to NITIE? 10th:82.8 12th:78.3 Btech:78.6 work ex:26months

    • CATAspirant, you will be over 90%ile and should apply to NITIE. With a SC reservation you should get a call from IIMs and all IITs.

      • sir in any case my accuracy drops down to 60-65% then obviously my percentile will go down. In that scenario will i able to fetch a call from new IIMs? Bit worried about VA and RC accuracy…

  80. sir should we expect any difference in the difficulty level for next slots( mine is 22nd, morning)? what should be our area of focus now so that we can maximise our score? my plan was to practice as much LRDI as i can, but given the level of difficulty in these sections and comparitively moderate level in other areas, would it not be more fruitful to concentrate on other things?

    • Davy, based on 16th Nov paper take Mock CAT 18, Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests in your Test Gym. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks. With difficult LR it might be useful to do it later after you have attempted the easier parts of the paper. I expect 22nd Nov paper to be of the same difficulty level.

  81. Hello Sir,
I had the evening slot on the 16th. I attempted 27 in Section 1 and 30 in Section 2 with an accuracy of 85-90%. The percentile predictor shows an estimate of 97-98 %ile. But since u say 65+ to be a good attempt (even i thought so given the level of questions), can u please tell me what range i would lie in and, more importantly, which colleges i should apply for? I would be very thankful to you.

    • Manish, we will be coming out with revised percentiles after all four slots are done with. It will be normalised and adjusted based on the data submitted by all of you.

  82. Sir,
As you said Quant is similar to Cat 2006, what about RC, VA and LR DI? Any similarity with old papers? As DI and LR is of moderate-difficult, it will be helpful for us who will be taking exam on 22nd slot. Although we may not except the same level of distribution or difficulty in respective areas.

    • Abhiteja, the LR and DI is similar to what you have in the Mocks. RC is a mix of the one in 1990’s (more factual) and the one in 2003-08 (length). Check out the new sectional tests and the Modified CAT 2006 that have been uploaded in the SIS.

  83. Sir,
I gave CAT 2014 evening slot, attempted 40 ques from which i think 33-35 would be correct. Can you tell me the expected percentile ?

  84. Sir,going by the trend is it wise now to revise mainly cat previous years papers in the next 5 days?My exam is on 22nd.Pls guide.also I generally attempt Lr 1st then rc then va and score 78-85.Will it be effective now to change strategy now and keep lr for the last 35 mins of the second section?

    • Kiki, based on 16th Nov paper take Mock CAT 18, Modified CAT 2006 and the 4 new sectional tests in your Test Gym. Practice DI and LR from your Mocks. With difficult LR it might be useful to do it later after you have attempted the easier parts of the paper. I expect 22nd Nov paper to be of the same difficulty level.

  85. Sir,
From your analysis it is quite clear that the structure of the exam was quite similar in both the sections(lrs being of higher difficulty level and qa easy and grammars having same type of questions with no new types included).I have my cat on 22nd second slot and request you to please tell me whether the same pattern is likely to be followed on 22nd or should I still practice FIJs and HOMONYMS.Also are the questions(DI and QA) similar to past cat papers? Please do reply sir as your analysis will help me make the most of my last 5 days.
