In the last couple of days my mailbox is overflowing and with a single query from many of you. How many questions should be attempted to ensure an IIM call appears to be a common worrying point. Unfortunately most of you believe that one needs a minimum of 99%ile for an IIM call, this creates unnecessary pressure and stresses you out. The reality is that even for a general category candidate the cutoff for most of the IIMs (including IIM A) is significantly lower than 99%ile.
To help you fine tune your test taking strategy I have created a short video that will give you the minimum attempts that you should target for an IIM call based on the category (General/NC-OBC/SC/ST) you belong to. The target attempts assumes 85% accuracy and is based on the data of CAT 2011 & 2012.
In addition to the CAT score, the interview calls from IIMs depend upon your profile score. You can check your profile score for the various IIMs by updating your profile in the SIS.
Click here to access this video. For more information on the target attempts for other institutes based on your category and latest updates on all tests visit www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013

Ravi, you must consider using the IIM Profilizer to know about that.
I am a General category student with marks:
10th- 94.8%
12th- 96.58%
BE- 89.9%
I have a accuracy of just 65%-70%. Will this affect my chances of getting into IIMs and what score should I get in CAT 15 for admission?
Fawkes, please confirm it using the IIM Profilizer.
Sir my name is Deepak Kumar. I belongs to general category. I have seen some previous IIM record. I am not eligible for any IIMs. I am totally demotivated. Here i s my academic record….
Category – General
10th – 55.33%
12th – 61.80%
graduation – 61.84%
I am going to attempt cat 2015. Will I get any chance from any IIMs or i should stop watching dream.
deepak, to know about your eligibility for the IIMs, please us the Iim profiler.
Sir, my academic scores are

Am i eligible for any of the IIM’s?
Ankur, unlikely but please check the IIM Profilizer.
hello sir
i have a doubt
i am nc obc student
i have completed my BE and now i am planing to take Drop for CAT 15 and 16(if not get good %tile in 15) without job Take drop is good. this Drop effected my selection chance in top IIMs. my acadmics 75.33 in 10th, 79.4 in 12th and 7.90(cgpa) = 75.05 % so can i take Drop for a Year or not plz sir sugest me i am fully confused
email id yavendra.champewar1@gmail.com
Yavendra Champewar, a drop of 1 year is not an issue and will not impact you adversely for CAT 2015. While a 2 year gap can also be explained if you are unable to make it to a good institute this year then for CAT 16 you should pick up a job. As a NC OBC candidate you should target at-least 95%ile to make it to a good institute and if you can get over 97%ile then then calls are possible for almost all institutes that have reservation.
also I am obc category.
what %tile should be for iim abc calls.
Kanhaiya, calls are possible for you from the top IIMs. As a NC-OBC candidate you should target a CAT score of over 97%ile.
good after noon
sir,
I would like to say some Q.
it’s my acads profile,
x-5.6 cgpa
xii-64.8% and 78% in graduate till 4th semester.
can I expect for iims and other b- schools with my tough hard labours forgetting previous acadmic profile
Hello sir,
I’m having a trouble in predicting my percentile for cat 2014 with many sites providing different information. I have tried figuring out my net score which is likely to be 127, at worst the case with 23 attempts in 1st section and 34 attempts in 2nd section, about 85-90% accuracy in both the sections.
Sir, what are my chances of getting a call from iims and fms with me being an SC category. And how much should I be expecting my percentile (approx ) to be sir?
Thank you.
Arjun, at a net score of 127 even in the worst case scenario you are likely to be over 90%ile and hence will get calls from almost all IIMs in the SC category.
Sir,
I belong to SC category.
10th – 92%
12th-85%
Grad.-55% (Am still in my final year)
My CAT was on 22nd Nov-2nd slot.
My attempts:
Quant – 19
Verbal- 19
Both with 95% accuracy.
What percentile can I expect and what percentile do i need to get a call from FMS and what percentile would ensure a convert in FMS?
Rohit, please enter you attempt and estimated correct details in the Percentile Predictor for your estimated percentile. My estimate is that you will be in the 80 to 85%ile range and as a SC candidate can get interview calls from IIMs and FMS. However it may not be sufficient for converting the FMS call.
Sir, What would be the expected number of questions I should attempt with an accuracy of 70% in order to get a percentile in excess of 99.5+.
I mean what is the raw score I should aim for?
I am currently getting anything between 155 to 175 in the CL mocks.
Piyush, relax you are definitely above 99.5%ile, my estimate is a raw score of 155+
Sir,
I belong to the SC category. I am in the final year of my B.Tech (Petroleum Engg.). My academic records are as follows :
Xth – 92%
XIIth – 85%
Graduation (till date) – 56%
How much percentile do i need to score to get into the old IIMs? And how many questions should I attempt in each section to get the desired percentile?
Rohit, your marks in graduation have spoiled your academic performance but you can get calls from all IIMs (including A, B & C) with a 90%ile in CAT’14. This would mean a raw score of approximately 115 marks.
Thanks a lot sir for your response! Apart from the old IIMs I am targeting the top 15 to 20 colleges!
With above 90%ile score in CAT, what colleges should I get? Like FMS,NITIE etc.??
Rohit, given that you belong to SC category you should restrict yourself to only those institutes that have reservation. This would mean IIMs, IITs, FMS, NITIE, Other Delhi University programs and Symbiosis University. A 90%ile will ensure calls from all these and possibly a final call also.
Sir my CAT exam in on 22nd evening slot… Since not many number of days are left, what should be my strategy n approach to score around 95%ile.. And especially which topics in Quant to focus on?
Rohit, Please refer to the post 4 Weeks to CAT’14 – Ab billi door nahin for the strategy for the last few days to CAT.
Sir, I have roughly 80% accuracy in both section with VA being slightly higher at 85%. How many attempts should I target to get a 99.5+ percentile and get a call from IIMs?
My profile is as follows:-
General Engineer Male
Graduation-82%
12th-91.4%
10th-94
No work experience.
I can attempt nearly 80-84 questions in CL mocks. Should I reduce the number of attempts to improve my accuracy?
Piyush, 80-84 attempts with over 80% accuracy in CAT’14 will give you a score of 180+ which will be almost 100%ile. IF you can maintain this then you do not need to reduce your attempts.
Thank you for a quick reply, Sir. Wont 80% accuracy drag down my percentile because of normalisation of marks? I mean should I aim for high marks or a good accuracy?
Piyush, there is no data to suggest that accuracy is given weigtage and even if it is it will be considered only after the overall score. After all one could attempt 10 questions with 100% accuracy. 80% accuracy is fine, just focus on a good raw score. Also one does not know if normalisation will happen or not because it is not difficult to create 4 papers of same level of difficulty.
Sir,
I belong to NC_OBC category
My profile is as follows:
Class X: 87.4
Class XII: 85.5
Graduation: 77.11
What percentile should I aim to get a call from IIM-A,B,C , FMS and MDI given that I am an NC_OBC FEMALE candidate?
Please also mention how many questions will be a good attempt given the changed pattern of CAT and what should be the proximity of getting them correct.
Thankyou.
Anu, as a NC OBC candidate female with good academic record you can get calls from top IIMs at 95%ile but my suggestion is to target 97%ile because not all IIMs will give you the benefit of being a female and the weight for academics has reduced this year for IIMA. FMS interview call is possible at 85%ile also but to have a good chance of getting a final call you should target over 95%ile. Your target score should be around 125-130 for a 97%ile. I’ll however come out with better estimates closer to the paper.
Sir I scored 77.8% in 12th cbse
and 85.5% in 10th
currently my cgpa is 7.07 and i am in 4th semester……
Can i get into the top IIMs in first attempt? IIM A, B or C
I recently read that many students who score more than 99.5% dont get calls from IIM just becoz of their 10th 12th and graduation marks? Do i also come in that category? where i might not get calls even if i score above 99.5
Also i am a general category student
Please do tell me whether IIM A B C are possible for me even if i am a fresher
Shreya, a score of over 99.6%ile can get you calls from the top IIMs. IIMC does not consider graduation marks and IIMA has relaxed its academic criteria this year.
Sir my academic marks are as follows:
Xth 96 %
12th-86%
BE-72%
Work ex of 24months
What are my chances?
Dear Rajesh,
You have a very decent academic profile. Your work experience adds even more value to your candidature. Overall, you have very good chances.
GP sir, i wanted to know what should be the number of correct and wrong answers to score a 99%ile
Dear Aditya,
65 attempts in CAT, with about 90% accuracy, should be good enough for securing 99 percentile +.
GP sir,
Does the college from which we have completed Btech matter? Also do the IIMs prefer students with no job experience or it becomes difficult?
GP sir i feel extremely delighted to be in touch with IIM alumnus. I am studying in NIT Agartala first year.i want to start early preparations for cat.I secured a 10 CGPA in class 10 and 88% in class 12 and also hoping to score well in my B.Tech. At what %ile and cat score can i get a call from IIM A,B,C or L
Aditya, a general category candidate needs at least 99%ile to get a call from top IIMs. With good marks in X, XII and Graduation all IIMs are possible at 99%ile, IIMC will however need over 99.5%ile.
Thanks for prompt reply. I wanted to know how should i start preparations at home level to improve in verbal ability section. how many years of job experience should i have and what should be the rough cat score for achieving a cat percentile of 99.5%
Aditya, since you are in 1st year and have sufficient time, my suggestion is to develop a reading habit. Daily e-newspaper along with a current affair magazine will help develop your reading speed and comprehension skills and will also improve your general knowledge. Additionally you should start solving the puzzles/riddles that come in the newspapers. Good academic performance is essential and participation in college festivals and other extra curricular activities will be helpful.
Sir I want to know what should be the number of correct and wrong answers to ensure a 99.5%ile in CAT
Dear Aditya,
65 to 70 attempts with 80% accuracy should be good enough for 99.5%ile+.
Sir,I wanted to know how many questions should I attempt assuming 70% accuracy in order to achieve 99%ile+?
Aditya, net correct attempts of 65 would have given a 99% in CAT 2014.
Hello Sir,
I have a doubt with the recent iim-a selection criteria, they have a concept AR wherein the marks in bachelor’s degree are considered. I am confused whether that would be final year’s marks or the aggregate of all the years. ( I am a student of Pune University which mentions final year’s passing class on the degree certificate )
Rahul100, you should take all years and all subjects.
Hello Sir
My Academics
10th – 81%
12th – 62%
BE – 7.75 cgpa
Category – NC-OBC
Currently in final year
Do I hold a chance for getting a call from top 3 IIMs… A B & C
Please do rply…m waiting
Tina12345, A, B & C are difficult but not ruled out. As a NC-OBC candidate with your academics you should target a score CAT score of 98%ile and hopefully you will make it to A, B and C.
Hello sir,
My GPA in btech is 6.5 and percentage 71. I wanted to ask whether, at the time of admission, my GPA would be considered or my percentage.
Venkatesh, the IIMs consider percentage.
And sir, what would other colleges like FMS, XLRI, SP Jain etc. consider?
Venkatesh, usually all institutes convert CGPA to percentage.
Sir, currently i’m in a dilemma, i hv 96.2 OA, 78.76 QA and 99.15 VALR in cat’13, applied to iitkgp vgsom….WL in 20s as of today, and IMI delhi pgdm, hv conv. yesterday….shld i join IMI or give CAT’14
Ashu, if you are confident of repeating your CAT’13 VALR performance and increasing QA to 90%ile (about 2 more correct answers) then go for a retake as it will get you to higher level institutes. Hope you have a job and will not be only preparing.
Sir,
Is there any official marks vs percentile list available. If not could you tell me how much you needed to score to attain a percentile of around 99.9% in CAT-’13.
Thankyou.
Rahul, my estimate is that till CAT’12 around 45 net correct answers gave an overall score of 99.99%ile. In CAT’13 the number would have come down to around 40.
sir, i am a student of B.E. from not so popular college.my past X- 9.4gdpa XII-78% i am in 5th sem(till 8.4 CPI) . and i really want to enter into iims after two years. what i should do now…?? start preparing from now only or should concentrate on my work experience (job) because i heard a lot that they prefer work experiences over freshers… what should i do now?
Ankita, first of all get rid of the fear of being a fresher or from a “not so popular” college. You have a good academic record and a good score in CAT plus good performance in the interview will get you into the IIMs not your college name or the number of years of work experience. From a career perspective the earlier one does an MBA the better it is hence you should go for CAT’15 and not delay to gain experience. About 1/3rd of the students in IIMs have less than 1 year experience so focus on your college and CAT preparation.
For CAT’15 you should immediately get in the habit of reading a daily newspaper along with a current affairs magazine as it will help you in the English section and also improve your GK which is required in the GD/WAT and interview. Start solving puzzles/riddles and start your structured CAT’15 preparation around Sep-OCt’14. You can choose a classroom coaching program or correspondence as per your requirement.
Thank you sir..i will definitely follow ur advice from this moment only .
I am a general category male candidate.
cat aspirant, your 12th and B.Tech scores a a bit low and hence you will need of over 99.7%ile to get a call from IIM ABC. Most of the other IIMs re possible at scores in the range of 98-99%ile. For FMS your target score should be 99%ile, for SP Jain over 97%ile and for XLRI your target XAT score should be over 97%ile
Hi admin,
I have 10th(91%), 12th(73%) and b-tech(71%). What %ile should I score in cat’14 in order to get a call from any of the IIMs/FMS/XLRI/SPJIMR ?
Right now I am doing job in an IT industry and am 2014 batch b-tech pass-out.
GOOD MORNING ,SIR
X- 85 % XII- 73 % GRADUATION (BCA) – 75 %
How much should I score in CAT to get call from IIMs? How many hours in a day from now I have to prepare for cracking CAT ?
Priyatam, in CAT you should target a score of over 99.7%ile for IIM A/B/C. Others are all possible at a score of around 99%ile.
The number of hours per day cannot be generalised but you should consider giving about 3 hours on weekdays and around 7-8 hours on holidays.
sir, how is this MANIPAL UNIVERSITY JAIPUR, for MBA???
Anurag, it is a new institute and should be considered only if you have to do an MBA this year itself.
Hello sir..I am an engineering student..My academics as of now are:
X : 91.8%
XII : 80.2%
Grad (upto 6th sem): 67%
NC OBC..
What should be my targeted score for a definite call from IIMs and fms, SPJIMR etc..?
Vijay, a CAT score of over 97%ile should lead to calls from all IIMs. For FMS you should have a score of around 95%ile to ensure conversion. SP Jain does not have reservation for NCOBC hence as a general category you should target 97%ile.
Sir , Im a General Category Engineering student entering my final year. My Acads as of now are :
Class X – 94.2%
Class XII – 93%
CGPA – 9.17 . *until semester 6 .
Around What %ile do I need to score to get calls from IIMs (both old and new ones) ?
Sudarshan, with an excellent academic record you can get calls from all IIMs. IIM C requires over 99.5%ile, IIM A and B are possible at over 99%ile. All other IIMs are possible at scores in the range of 98-99%ile.
Sir!
I am a ex student of CL, cp center, Delhi. I have scored 92.73 percentile with a score of 232/450 in CAT 2013. I have converted IMT-DCP n FORE IB, but due to the high fee of DCP n lack of interest towards IB, I have decided to take CAT2014. But this time I am aiming atleast 98%ile, so that I may able to convert colleges like SPJIMR, MDI etc
1. Sir! last year as I remembered I have attempted 38 questions… How much questions should be attempted to get the desired percentile assuming my accuracy is 80% ?
(I know its vary upon slot to slot, but i just need the general idea.)
2. Do I need to rejoin CL(classroom/test series)?
Abhishek, CAT’13 was a strange paper in which 9 net correct answers in VALR gave a score of 97.5%ile, in CAT’12 one needed around 16-17 net correct answers for 97.5%ile. To my mind 38 was a very good attempt and possible your accuracy was below 80%ile hence a lower score.
Since you have a decent score in CAT’13, for a retake you do not need to go for a classroom program. Test Series + Test Gym is recommended for you but you should however consider joining Smart CAT Cracker Comprehensive which includes Test Series, Test Gym and Online sessions that focus on the right approach for solving questions. As a CL CAT’13 student you are eligible for a discount on the programs, use your enrollment ID as the discount code.
Sir sorry to disturb u i scored 78.9 in class 10
and 79.4 in class 12
currently i am doing b.tech from not so popular private college and i have finished my first year with 7.85CGPA
what percentile should i target for and do i stand any chance in iim A
My dream colleges are either IIM A or XLRI or FMS.
so what should be target percentile in CAT and XAT for these three colleges
Praveen, even though you are only marginally below 80% in X, XII and graduation, you will still need over 99.7%ile for a call from IIM A/B/C. FMS calls are possible at 98.5%ile but conversion is unlikely below a CAT score of 99%ile. For XLRI interview call a XAT score of over 95%ile is sufficient but again a sccore in excess of 98%ile improves chances of conversion.
sir i have 79.8% in X board
72% in XII and i am expecting 7.2 cgpa in engineering.i am an sc category student.what are my chances to get admission in a reputed IIM and what about what percentile will make me expect calls form them
Sameer, SC candidates with good academic record you can get calls from all IIMs at a CAT score of over 85%ile but my suggestion is to target over 90%ile to be sure of calls since you have an average academic record.
Hi Sir,
I have work ex of 24 months till date in IT industry, and my academic profile is 84, 64.83, 70.77 fr X, XII and BE.
I belong to OBC category and would like to know whether or not i can get a call from IIM A,B,C’s , if Yes what would be a safe percentile score for that?
Thank you!
BKG, with average marks in XII and Graduation you should target 97-98%ile for for IIM A and C. IIMB is possible at a lower score due to your work experience.
Hi Sir,
this is sai sravan
my profile
Xth- 90%

How much %tile I have to get for IIMs call? Is it possible to crack CAT within 4 months of preparation span?
I belongs to general catagory.
Sai, if you are in college then for preparation target 3-4 hours on weekdays and 8-10 hours on holiday, this over the next 3-4 months will ensure adequate preparation for CAT’14. If you have completed college then you can obviously increase your preparation time on weekdays. You have good academic record and hence calls are possible from all IIMs. For IIM A/B/C you should target a score of over 99.5%ile but the others are all possible at CAT scores between 98-99%ile.
Hello sir,
10th-89% ICSE
12th- 90.2% CBSE
Graduation(till now i.e. 6th semester)- 75.6%
I dropped one year after 12th to get into a decent engineering college. Being a complete fresher what should be my target for CAT this year. I belong to NC-OBC category.
Many thanks in advance.
Sneha, as a female NC OBC candidate with good academic record you can expect calls from all IIMs at a score of over 95%ile. Your target score however should be 97.5%ile.
Thanks for the prompt reply. My little concern was if the gap of one year after class 12 will make any difference.
Sneha, it will not matter.
Sir,
Xth- 82%
XIIth- 75%
Engineering aggr.- 59%
How much %tile I have to get for IIMs call? Is it possible to crack CAT within 4 months of preparation span?
I belongs to general catagory.
Tejas, your graduation marks of 59% makes IIM A and B unlikely unless you get almost a 100%ile in CAT. IIMC does not consider graduation marks so it is possible but its general category cutoff is usually over 99.5%ile. Most of the other IIMs are also possible at a score in excess of 99%ile. Almost all non-IIMs have low/no weightage for past academics and are all possible at a CAT score of 97%ile. FMS and IIT Mumbai require around 99%ile.
sir i got 56 percent in 12 can i be eligible for iim……….pls help!!!
abhimac, the eligibility requirement is 50% in graduation.
sir
i got 70% in 10th, thn i did 3 years diploma in mechanical engg with 68% overall (SBTE) haryana, nd now doing b.tech final year with an average of 75%, as i have done 3 year diploma , m i eligible for the CAT2K14 as the requirement is 10+2+3/4 pattern, m worried about tht.. plzz help
if yes thn can i make it to IIM’S???? how much i’ll need to score?
general catogory
Prashant, your diploma in Mechanical Engineering is equivalent of Class XII you are eligible for CAT. However with 68% in XII, 75% in XII (Dip Mech Engg) and 75% in graduation IIM A,B,C are difficult unless you have a CAT score of almost 100%ile. All other IIMs are not a problem and a score of 98-99%ile can get you calls from some (if not all other) of the IIMs.
Sir,
I am a 2nd year B.Tech Student and i must confess that your commitment to this blog really deserves appreciation.I have a decent profile but 79.6% in my 12th is a real cause of concern for me.I would like to know if i would be eligible for a call from the top 6 iims with a cat score in excess of 99%ile(General Category).
Also note :10th -91.2%
graduation:8.25 cgpa currently
shyam93m, do not let the 79.6% bother you, it is unlikely to be a big issue as your X and XII are good. IIM Kolkata requires a CAT score of over 99.5%ile for general category candidates, all others are possible at a CAT score in excess of 99%ile.
sir
10th-82%
12th-59%
doing engineering from a 2nd tier college…but i have 2 year backs and my percentage when i complete would not be more than 55%..i know i would never be eligible for iims but how much do i need to score realistically to maybe get a top 25-20 college…..
i am a general category student
patrice, you are right, the top IIMs are unlikely unless you get almost a 100%ile in CAT. However most of the top non IIMs have a low/no weight for past academics and hence calls and conversion are both possible. While most good colleges are possible at CAT a score of 95%ile, the top ones (SP Jain, MDI, NITIE, most IITs etc ) will require a CAT score of over 97%ile and IIT Mumbai/FMS will need a CAT score of 99%ile.
Hello sir,
I am preparing for CAT’14 and I am little worried about my profile. X- 57% XII- 73% and B.tech- 64%(till 6th sem). My question is how much score in CAT can fetch me a call from IIM’s FMS and MDI?
With this profile, do I really have a chance to get any IIM. If not then which other B schools I should be focused?
I have started giving mock Cat’s of CL, although the scores are not good in beginning. What should be my strategy for the mock cat?
Nikhil, the IIMs are difficult unless you have a very high CAT score (almost 100%ile). fortunately almost all top institutes outside IIMs (FMS, IITs, etc) have a low/no weight for past academics and are not a problem. A CAT score of 99%ile will ensure a call from FMS & IIT Mumbai while a CAT score of over 97%ile can get you calls from almost all other top MBA institutes.
Hope you are analysing your Mock CATs in detail and revising them and other MCQs regularly.
Hi,
Jenni here.
These are my scores:
X(CBSE)-86%
XII(CBSE)-76.4 %
BE(Pune University)-56.4%
Please let me know if am applicable for any IIM’s???
If Yes what is the score i should target? I belong to Open Category.
Thanks
Jennifer, IIM A and B are unlikely due to 56.% in graduation. IIM C typically requires over 99.5%ile for general category candidates, other IIMs are possible at a score of over 98%ile.
hello sir,
i scored 93% in my 10th
89.4% in 12th
and 74%aggregate in b.e
i am in my final year engineering
how much should i score in cat to get into iim-b.
i am really passionate to get in. I plan on studying three hours a day and i attend a coaching class on the weekends.
Thank you.
Shruti, as a fresher with less than 80% in graduation you should target over 99.5%ile to get a call from IIM A,B and C.
Sir,
my scores are as below:
10th Gujarat Board 88.15%, 12th Gujrat board 78.13%,Compter Engineering in GTU cgpa 68%. am a female belonging to general category. If i get 99 persential in my cat examination can i have any chance to get call from iim ahemdabad ??
Nishi, with less than 80% in XII and in graduation you will need over 99.5%ile in CAT to get a call from IIM A,B and C. All other IIMs and other top MBA institutes however not a problem.
Hi Sir,
Iv just begun my prep for cat14 and wanted some guidance regarding the same. Below are my credemtials :
Xth 93.4
XIIth 95.75
Grad (NIFT delhi) 7.49 cgpa
I have a 10 month work ex and now I want to focus on my cat prep. I have been out of touch with maths for a while now so would you have any suggestions on how to utilise this prep time efficiently to my benefit. What percentile should I be aiming at and how would my chances be at getting into the top b-schools?
Thanks.
Pri, just focus on your CAT books/study material. Go through the solved examples to get the concept, solve the unsolved questions at the end of the chapter, If you are unable to solve then check the solutions. Finally solve the MCQs in the book and in Test Gym.
With excellent performance in X and XII, good performance in Graduation, experience of over a year (by end Dec’14), marks for gender diversity and academic diversity you have a good chance in all IIMs except IIMA (due to CGAP less than 8). As a general category candidate your target score for IIMC should be 99.5%ile but all other IIMs are possible at 99%ile. The new IIMs are possible at 97%ile. Most of the top b schools outside IIMs are possible at 97%ile.
Hi Sir
My Academics is
10th 86%
12th 64.4% Both from CBSE
And Graduation 75.3 with Honors
Work Experience 24 Months
How much CAT score would be good to get top IIM’s.
Please let me know.
Ujjwal, IIM A and C are unlikely unless you get a 100%ile in CAT but with a 2 year work experience IIMB is possible. IIMB and all other IIMs are possible with a CAT score of over 99%ile
THANKS A LOT….Actually i am worried for my 10th and 12th r b.tech marks…because those three marks are below 80 percentage…..so,i thought that i do not have any chance in top b school……..like IIM A,B,C,L or XLRI,S.P.JAIN
Siddhartha, start working for a good CAT score now. You should also take GMAT to open the option of ISB Hyderabad.

how many %tile i need to score in CAT14 to get a good college like nitie, iim, etc
abc, typically a NCOBC requires a 95%ile to get a call from the IIMs but since you have a 64% in graduation suggest that you target 97%ile to ensure a call from all IIMs. IIM B give weight to work experience and hence call is possible at 90%ile also.
Respected Sir,
I asked you about my profile previously as well but i forgot to tell you about my ECs and would like to know if these would compensate my profile for bad academics in some or the other way.
My 10th % = 71 %
My 12th % = 65 %
My graduation % = 70 % (till 7th sem)
My ECs/work ex (not a full time job):-
I am a manager in AIESEC, which is the world’s largest youth-run organization for facilitating international internships and leadership opportunities providing its members various leadership roles in various portfolios such as Marketing, Finance, Information Management, Talent Management, Human resources etc.
I have been a member since months, will be one year by the time i take CAT.
I have also done a computer course in Webmaster technology along with my engineering as well.
I just wanted to ask you if this would make my profile any good or not. The reason i am asking you is because, after looking at IIMs selection criterias for X and XII marks, my morale is really down that its affecting my CAT preparation, making me think that i will not get a good institute (IIMs) even if i score really good in CAT.
I do not know if i can manage to get a call from FMS, XLRI, SP Jain, MDI and even if i do, what are the chances of conversion with such a profile?
Please reply soon.
Thank You
Sagar, unfortunately in the system followed by the institutes in India ECs come into play only in the interview stage and are not considered for shortlisting for the interview. However if you get a call then these ECs will be helpful in converting the call.
While some of the IIMs are unlikjely for you most of the others are not a problem. Also all the top non IIMs like XLRI, IITs, MDI, NITIE, SP Jain etc are possible so keep your focus on preparation and do not let your past spoil your future.
Please confirm how much percentile i need to get to get a call from IIM’s. I have work experience of 33 months.
my academic’s scores are
X – 78%
Xii- 74%
Btech- 7.86 CGPA…..is there any chance for S.P.JAIN OR top IIM? please reply sir
Siddhartha, with a 33 month work experience and decent academics IIMB is possible for you at around 98%ile however for IIM A and C you will need to target a score of over 99.5%ile since they do not give weight to work experience for an interview call. All other IIMs are possible at 98%ile, FMS and IIT Mumbai will require 99%ile and SP Jain, MDI, NITIE etc will need a 97%ile.
sir i am a final year b.tech student
my academic profile is

what should be my CAT 14 score to get IIM’s (a/b/c) call
i am a OBC NC candidate
thanks in advance sir
Godara, NC OBC candidates with good academic record can expect calls from all IIMs at a CAT score of 95%ile but with less than 80% in XII and Graduation tou should target at least 97%ile.
Sir, I am a Btech student under West Bengal University of Technology. Our university provide us with cgpa in our mark sheets only. Could u kindly tell me hw is the cgpa converted to percentage by the IIM and other renowned MBA colleges like XLRI, FMS, IIFT etc.
And what will be my cgpa of 8.2 be when converted to percentage.
please reply sir.
Dinesh, if your university has a specific formula for converting CGPA into marks then the formula is used else CGPA of 8.2 will be converted to 82%. Please check with your university for the conversion formula.
Dear sir..
please tell me what type of job I will get after doing MBA from finance market from itm khargar?
can I get a good placement offer package?
Prabhat, it will be essentially in BFSI with an salary of around Rs 4.5 – 5 lakh pa.
Hello Sir,
I am a 3rd year BTech student.
My academic profile is a follows:
btech: cgpa 8.96
XII : 92%
X: 94%
I belong to the general category.
Culd u tell me how much should I get in CAT 2014 to get into the top 3 IIM’s.
And also ive heard that iim calcutta finally selects candidates with work experience, is it so?
And what is the case with regards to iim a and b ???
Anuj, with your excellent academic record you can get calls from all IIMs. Typically IIMC needs over 99.5%ile, IIM A and BB are possible at over 99%ile and IIML at 98%ile. Your information is incorrect, every year freshers also make it to all IIMs however in IIMB candidates with over 2 year work experience can get interview calls at a score as low as 955ile also.
Dear Sir,
I got 90%ile in CAT-13,I belong to NC-OBC,with 70%,72%,71%in 10th, 12th, and B.tech, and work ex of 18 months in IT,
How much %tile is require to get IIM ABC call & able to convert it smoothly.
For the respective %tile how many question should I attempt in CAT.
Dev, typically NC OBC candidates can get a call from all IIMs at 95%ile but with your average academics you should target 97%ile. Based on CAT 10 and 12 this would typically mean around 15 net correct answers in each section.
Thankyou very much Sir
Hello sir
I am getting financial market as specialization in itm navi mumbai…..for pgdm.Is this is a good one for me.
please tell me which is good one …core pgdm-finance or financial market as specialization .
Prabhat, ITM Navi Mumbai is an acceptable institute but FM specialisation could have restricted placements and hence PGDM Finance is preferable.
Sir
Please suggest the required preparation strategy based on my profile.
Female

SC
10th: 80%
12th:61%
BDS: 64%
I have been working under a senior dentist since a year. Does that count as work experience?
what are the odds of me getting into an IIM?
Shweta, this is valid work experience. While your X and XII scores are low but as a SC female candidate (non engineer) you should target a score of 90%ile in CAT to ensure a call from all IIMs.
Hi Sir ,
I am a General Category candidate and my academic scores are:-
10th-84%
12th-81%
b.tech-75%(till 6th semester)
1 year drop after 12th. I have no work experience. I am aiming for CAT 2014. And I am aiming for top IIM’s(A/B/C). Is my profile good enough to get call from IIM a, b and c? And what percentile would be good enough?
And is a 1 year drop taken as a serious negative for admission in top IIM’s?
Also sir could you kindly tell me how much should I score to get into FMS?
Kindly reply.
Thanking you in advance.
Deepak, IIM A, B and C are all possible at a score of around 99.7%ile. The 1 year drop is not an issue and can be handled comfortably, it is not a reason of rejection. FMS gives calls at a score of over 98.5%ie but for final conversion is difficult at a score below 99%ile.
Thank you very much for your previous reply sir.
I am a bit apprehensive about my academic profile, because I only hear students with above 90% score in 10th and 12th or having good work experience are able to convert the call, and students like me with average academic backgrounds do not make the final cut(that is can not convert the call for final admission) even by getting a score in the high 99%ile.
Sir, kindly shed light as to how much reality is there to this.
Deepak, this is not correct and students with lower marks in X, XII and Graduation also make it to IIMs and other top institutes. Obviously for the top IIMs a 90% marks is an advantage.
Sir, how much would u rate my academic back ground?
and sir could u pls tell me hw much percentile will one get with a score of 300-310 out of 450 in CAT judging from this years CAT ?
Deepak, a score of 300-310 would be around 99.75%ile
Sir,
I am appearing for CAT-2014 and have purchased the Smart CAT cracker course. I am finding this course really helpful for my quants and verbal preparation. IIMs A,B,C are my dream institutes but since it is very tough to get into these institutes but I have sometimes felt it is better to go for XLRI or FMS rather than the other IIMs. What would be your view regarding this? How would be IIM-Lucknow in comparison to XLRI, SP-Jain or FMS kinds of institutes? I have heard that IIM-L does not have 100% placement, is it true? Is it still a top IIM? Also what would be the cut-off percentile in CAT required to get L call and also the minimum percentile required to finally convert IIM-L/K/I? What of the new IIMs and IIM-Shillong? Would you consider it a good idea to join these institutes or consider the option of XLRI,FMS,SPJIMR,MDI etc?
Supriya, you should not be institute specific at this point of time. Focus on your preparation with a view of doing well in all the major MBA entrances i.e. CAT, XAT, IIFT, NMAT and SNAP and target the top 25 institutes that inclue all IIMs, XLRI, FMS, JBIMS, TISS, MDI, IITs, SP Jain, MDI, NITIE and IIFT. NMIMS, SIBM Pune, SCMHRD and XIMB should also be considered favourably.
IIML is among the top 5 MBA institutes in India and placement is not an issue at all.
For a general category candidate IIM C typically requires over 99.5%ile, while the cutoff for IIM B varies depending upon your work experience and academic track record, IIMA too has a variation based on academic track record. For a fresher with over 80% in X, XII and graduation a score of over 99%ile is required for A and B. IIML has weight for other factors also which include gender diversity (girls) and academic diversity (non engineers) and hence you can get calls at a score of over 98%ile.
Hi Sir,
99.7 percentile??. This is just because of my 12th? I have heard iim c and a have points for girl candidate.
Rani, IIMC considers X and XII marks only and for general category candidate the cutoff is over 99.5%ile and hence the target of 99.7%ile for you.
IIMA has formula of calculating the Academic Rating score that takes into account your X, XII and XII marks with the maximum weight for graduation marks and for a general category Engineer with your academic record will need almost a 100%ile for a call. Details are available at http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/users/admission/files/Shortlist%20Criteria_2014-16.pdf
Sir,
If I get more than 99 percentile, I can expect call from iim A? what is the right amount of work exp to get maximum weightage?
Rani, for IIM A and C you will need over 99.7%ile in CAT.
Sir,
My %marks are as below:
X – 77%; XII – 79%; B.Tech(Mechanical Engineering) – 8.25 (75%)- running i.e., 2014 batch; No work experience; belonging to SC category. I want to know around what percentile is required for me to call form different IIMs and others top level institutions. Please provide me a clear list for such.
Another query, is it not beneficial (during admission and further) to go for IIMs/others without job experience?
Thanks and regards,
Suman.
Suman, as a SC candidate you should go for CAT, IIFT and SNAP only as reservations are not available in institutes through XAT and NMAT.
For your category a score of 85%ile is usually sufficient for calls from the IIMs, FMS, NITIE and IITs but my suggestion is to target 90%ile as it will increase your chances of selection. For IIFT your target score has to be 40+ and in SNAP your target scores for SIBM/SCMHRD should be 80%ile.
Ideally you should go for MBA immediately after graduation as it helps in career growth. Work experience helps you understand the program better but is not realy helpful in getting the interview calls.
Hi Sir ,
10th-88.6%
12th-72.2%
b.tech-82%
1 year drop after 12th. I have experience of 2 year. I am amimin for CAT 2014. And I am aiming for iim a, b, c. Is my profile good enough to get call from IIm a, b and c? And what percentile would be good enough?
Rani, your 72% in XII could be an issue but most probably you will be able to get calls from the top IIMs. In IIMB your 2 year work experience will compensate for your XII marks. IIM A and C will need over 99.%ile in CAT while in IIMB 98%ile could be sufficient due to your work experience.
sir,my academic records are as follows:
1. 10th ICSE 91%
2.12th ISC 84.5%
3. BTech 76.2% (till the 7th semester)
Sir,id be very grateful if u kindly tell me how many questions in QA n VA i need to attempt to land with a 98-99 percentile, and if id be considered to be given a call by the IIMs. Also sir,how much do i need to score to get calls from the top IIT s? Is IMI kolkata or bhubaneshwar good enough in terms of placements ?
anneshya, till CAT’12 about 17 net correct answers were required for a score of around 97-98%ike in each section but CAT’13 has thrown up surprising results with only 9 net correct attempts in section 2 giving 97.5%ile.
IIT Mumbai needs over 99%ile in CAT, IIT Delhi requires 98%ils and almost all other IITs require over 97%ile for interview call.
Ii is early to comment on IMI Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar as they are new and yet to establish their placement credentials.
Sir I need your advice. Please reply.
I am working with an NGO as a manager and drawing a salary. Will this be counted as a work experience?
I am from general category.
I have 87,81 and 61 percent in X XII and Graduation(Engineering) respectively. Is there a chance for the IIMs?I willl be taking CAT 2014.The NGO that I am working for is not a very popular one. Will that be a disadvantage? I would have had a work ex of 15 months by August. Also,is it wise to enrol in a PG course to cover up the poor performance in undergraduation or should i continue with my job? I am in a dilemma.
Trisha, work in an NGO is counted as work experience and it does not matter if it is not a popular one. You need not go for a PG but continue with your job.
With the current criteria of IIMs and with 61% in graduation IIMA (including ABM) and B will be difficult unless you get a 100%ile in CAT. IIMB however gives weight to work experience and if you have a 2 year work experience then it is possible at a CAT score of over 98%ile. IIMC does not consider graduation marks but typically requires over 99.5%ile in CAT for interview call. All other IIMs are possible at a score of 98%ile.
Hello GP sir,
I am a general category student.
My 10th std marks-80%
My 12th std marks-70.4
UG-B.Tech-6.74 CGPA
JOB Experience-1.8 years(present)
With my current acads, How much should score i aim in CAT 2014 to make it to IIMs and colleges within Top 20 range??
BALASUBRAMANIAN, for the top IIMs you will need almost a 100%ile for a call but the other IIMs and most of the other top institutes are possible at a score of over 98%ile.
Sir,
I am a Mechanical Engineer graduated in 2012. My academics are:
Xth: 88%
XIIth: 76.6%
B.E (CGPA / %): 7.93 / 73.1%
Work Experience: 18 Months (Currently working)
If I target a CAT 2014 score of 90-95 percentile kindly list out some top colleges where I can expect a call.
Thanks & Regards
Niladri
Niladri, please refer to the blogpost Cutoffs of CAT allied institutesfor the list of institutes.
hello sir….
How is SIES institute Mumbai?
at CAT 88.56%ile
Could I apply for pgdm from it?
Is this is a good institute?
PRabhat, it is a decent back up institute with an average salary of around 5 lakh pa.
But sir can I get job easily after pgdfm from iifm having low profile?
PRabhat, yes you can. Mostly it is your MBA performance and not past academic record that gets you a job.
Thank you sir….Thank you so much
now I am free from irritations
I have chances of conversion my call….in itm navi Mumbai ….Mnnit Allahabad …iifm..and also welingkar Mumbai.
Which institute is best for me…..for placement also …..at my above given education qualification or %age
Prabhat, my order of preference will be IIIFM, Welingkar Mumbai, ITM Navi Mumbai and finally MNIT Allahabad.
Hello sir…
there is one question for you that…somebody saying that…..at the time of placement in IIFM Bhopal all companies and PSUs having 60% criteria in every stage of education….
.but my
10th–53.83(CBSE)
12th-50%(CBSE)
grad.running—62%
CAT–88.56%ile
my question is..if I get iifm then I can take it or not….and also it have sector specific…PGDFM
Prabhat, this is normally done by PSU finance companies only, the others usually do not bother about your marks in school/college.
What other calls do you have.
Hi Sir,
I would like to attempt cat exam this year, will you please tell me required percentile to get call from IIM A,B,C,L,Kozhikode
I am from civil engineering background
my academics:
10th-88.8%
12th-93%
b.tech-82%
work ex likely to be 18-24 months in L&T construction company
Thanks in advance!
Rangarao, which category do you belong to – General, NCOBC, SC, ST, PH?
general
Rangarao, based on your profile you should will need over 99%ile for IIMA, over 98%ile for IIMB, over 99.6%ile for IIMC and over 98%ile for IIM L & K.
Thank your sir
Sir,
my scores are as below:
10th CBSE 94%, 12th State board 96%, Engineering cgpa 96%. am a female belonging t general category. what should be my cat score to get admits from top iim’s. ?? I hae now started working in a reputed software company and will have one year of work exerience
Abinaya, with your excellent academic record for IIMC you will need over 99.5%ile but IIM A and B are possible at 99%ile and all other IIMs at 98%ile.
My cat, xat percentile this year were 96.2 and 97.6.
I have secured an admit in NMIMS,mumbai (core) and am presently awaiting MDI and XLRI results.
My query is if i convert neither of the above two would you suggest me to retake CAT next year? ( I have secured a job in campus placements) Or should i go for NM core as it would give me a years headstart.
Sugandhi, With 67% in graduation IIMA is unlikely and in case you go for a retake you have to target the other IIMs, XLRI, FMS, JBIMS, MDI, IIFT and SP Jain all of which will need over 97%ile in CAT. For IIMs and FMS you will need over 99%ile. If you are reasonably sure of a 99%ile in CAT/XAT then pick up the job and go for a retake else join NMIMS Mumbai.
Sir my academics are
X-91%
Xii-92%

Do i have a chance of getting in any of the top iims??
Sir,
How much percentile is needed for me to get a call from IIMs.

12th: 88.6%
B.Tech: 79%(I am currently in 3rd year(6th sem) and the percentage includes marks of only 5 semesters.
I am a female student of general category.
Ankita, try and push your graduation marks to 80.xx% as it will significantly increase your chances of getting a interview call from all the IIMs. For IIM B and C you will need at least 99.5%ile while IIM A is possible at 99%ile. All other IIMs are possible at 98%ile.
hello sir
my gdpi is not good in MNNIT Allahabad …….can it converted my GDPI……..at CAT percentille 89%…..
Prabhat, it is possible, let us hope for the best.
Sir,
With my 10th – 62.76%

12th- 44% (sci)
f.y.bsc (comp.sci)-55%
S.y.bsc comp sci-60%
I am s.t. category student
Any chance in old iim specialiy iim a
Bhaskar, with a poor academic record you will need to do well in CAT to get a call from the IIMs (old and new). While a ST candidate with good academic record can get calls from IIMs at 75%ile, you should target over 85%ile for a call from the IIMs.
Sir,
I am a CA by profession. I have been working for past 2 yrs and now want to do MBA. How should i prepare(material, classes, mock tests, etc.) for CAT and whether any of the IIM gives special consideration for CA degree?
Dear Nishad,
Most institutes look for a healthy mix of students from different streams. Accordingly, being a CA with two years of work experience will certainly be an advantage for you. For starting your preparation, look at some past years’ papers and try to evaluate where you stand on the different topics/ areas. Based on this, you can decide whether you need to go for a regular classroom program or should opt for study material and test series for your preparation.
Hello sir,
my cat score is 98.96
X 74.66
XII 68.17

1 year experience in IT company. As a software developer
can i expect a call from iim or atleast sp jain score based calls what are my chances
Jai, IIM and SP Jain calls were declared long ago, if you have not received them as yet then you have not been considered.
sir, i got the gd/pi calls from iim-c,l,k but final results are yet to be declared. due to my poor academics is there any chance of convert
Jai, a good Interview + WAT can compensate for poor acads. Let us hope for the best.
Hi,
Jst wanted to know how much Percentile should I need to score to get a Call from any of the IIM’s
M a General category Male guy from engineering background
Academics:-
SSC Score is 83 %
HSC Score is 84%
B.Tech Score is 72.34%
I have 2+ years of work experience in 2 different technologies n companies
Your reply will b really useful as M trying for dis CAT, MBA n all for d very 1st time!
Do Reply..:)
Arun, IIM A will be difficult due to less than 80% in graduation. In IIM B, your low graduation score will get compensated with your 2 year work experience and IIMC is not a problem since your X and XII scores are high all other IIMs and other top B schools are not a problem. IIM C typically requires over 99.5%ile in CAT while all other IIMs (including B) are possible for you at a score of over 98%ile.
Hello GP sir !! I have got 64.8% in 10th and 59.8% in 12th and 7.4 CGPA in engg, SC category..Do i stand a chance to get calls from IIM A,C,L ?? How much percentile is needed ?? I am a fresher ..will it be better for me to gain 1-2 years of work-ex before giving CAT ?? THANKS A LOT sir..
Abhiroop, as a SC candidate with not so good academic record you should target at least 90%ile in CAT for a call from the top IIMs. Work experience will be helpful in some of the IIMs but you should consider job as a back up only as the earlier you do an MBA the better it is for your career. In addition to the IIMs you should consider FMS, IIFT and the IITs also.
Sir,
Following are my acads:
Xth-86.40% , Xth- 71.80%, Graduation (prefinal)- 47.3x %
Cat Score- OA-92.17, QADI-89.6, VALR-89.6
Category-SC
I didn’t get a call from any of old IIMs(A,B,C,K,I,L), IIM shillong and IIM rhotak also. I did get a call from remaining 5 new IIMs.
Earlier you said that I would get a call at 92.17 %ile despite my acads from all IIMs except A and B.
Why do you think I was not considered?
And lets say that my final grad % rises to 53-54, would I have a chance to get call from A,B or C even if I score 99+ %ile? or do I need to get work experience for that? And even after work ex and 99+ %ile would I be able to get a call from A,B and C?
And also sir what are my chance of getting a call from FMS this year and converting it as a fresher with my prefinal grad %age?
What is the final selection criteria of FMS as there seems to be no information about this on the internet?
Thank you in advance sir and sorry for so many questions but I’m really desperate and troubled, Kindly answer these questions in detail.
Himanshu, the only reason for no calls from most of the IIMs seems to be your graduation marks. Calls might be possible from these institutes if your graduation marks or CAT score increase. Work experience of 2-3 years will also be helpful. FMS does not look at past academics its admissions are based on your CAT score and performance in the interview, GD and extempore hence you have a good chance. Focus on your interview of new IIMs and consider retake only if you do not get through to these or FMS or the top IITs.
Gm sir
sir my cat 2013 score is 219…88.56%…
no work experience
12 th……50%
10th…….53.83%
graduation B Com(CA)….61% running final year…
Can I get call for GDPI in welingkar Mumbai…?and how its conversion…..
Prabhat, with a decent CMAT score you have a good chance of converting the call. Your interview performance is now the key factor for conversion.
Hello sir again,
thanx for giving information..
But sir at this time I am busy in preparing GDPI…so which type of GD topics I expect in acctual GDPI in welingkar, iifm, mnnit…at current politic or economic days..please tell me….and also how I can crack it because I know English 90%well but not speak clearly and with grammeratical mistakes…with 30% hesitation..
Prabhat, the GD topics are usually based on simple topics of current affairs and brushing up on your current affairs will be helpful.
The only way to improve your English speaking skills is to speak in English. For the next couple of days you should speak only in English even if the others use Hindi or any other language. Reading a newspaper aloud will also be helpful.
hello sir,
I am Prabhat..CAT2013 88.56 percentile…I have been already apply for pgdm in wellingkar, mnnit, iifm…but at the time of application I was given my WRONG EMAIL…So how can I get information from these institute…please tell me…its request.
Prabhat, please call the institutes and check up the status of your application. The institutes will have a process by which you can rectify your address which also they will update you on.
Sir,
I got 78.45 percentile while in A-45, i belonged to SC category……Sir whats the possibility for getting calls from IIT Kanpur and FMS BHU……
Abhishek, both are likely.
hello sir,,

Prabhat, apologise for the delay in responding to your query.

Got a profile based call from SP Jain for operations management. Is my CAT score safe enough to convert the call with decent group interviews ?
Paul, you can convert the call given that your perform exceedingly well in the next rounds.
At CAT OA 82.87%ile (General) chances for GD/PI call and conversion for the following institutes: NIT Allahabad, NIT Calicut, Nirma, XISS, XIME, BITS Pilani, GIM, DSM DTU, TAPMI, KJ, FMS BHU, UBS PU, RGIPT, Welingkar and IIFM Bhopal
Ashish, you have a decent chance of a call from all these institutes except GIM. Conversion is usually a function of your performance in the personality assessment process and hence you should focus on your PDP classes to ensure a final call.
Respected Sir/Madam,
I am Punitha.S doing my final year in B.E ( Computer Science and Engineering). My current CGPA is 8.403 and my CAT score is 81.85 Percentile score is 204. My sectional cut off is 84.28 in Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and in Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning is 74.51. I belong to NC-OBC quota. My 10th mark is 91.6% and 12th mark is 95.83%.
Can you please tell me if I am eligible to get the call from IIT-M or LIBA or please suggest any other reputed institution to apply.
Thanking You,
Punitha
Punitha, good chances of calls from both the colleges.
how damaging is gap year
Sw, not much of an issue as long as you can justify the same.
Hello sir, I attempted CAT 2013 but failed by a big margin. I wanted to know how should I prepare myself to crack CAT next year. Given the poor performance this year ,what would be the best approach you can suggest me to crack CAT next year?
Sriram, if you are finding it difficult on your own you can join the nearest CL centre to get the relevant study material and proper guidance on your plan of action. Besides, you can brush up your concepts with any of the standard books for CAT and take regular practice tests. With time and proper hard-work you can achieve a better score next year.

Aruna, calls are unlikely at 71%ile. Given your excellent academic record, my suggestion is to pickup a job and go for CAT’14, to be sure of calls from the IIMs and IITs you will need to target a score of 85%ile.

Dear GP Sir,
I got 84.28 %(Quant) 86.46(Verbal) and 87.77(overall). I am an engineer from a tier 1 govt institute. Working in an IT company with 2.5+ years work ex. Request your suggestion whether this score can fetch me some decent institute call. I am looking towards a career move seriously. My current IT profile is from business perspective, but the work environment pushes me for a change.
Thanks a lot for your time. Your suggestion would help a lot in making a decision.

sir your reply can change the direction of my career.

kamal, you will be able to clear the interview but the gap will be an issue. My suggestion is that instead of focussing on MBA entrances get a job, work for a year and then try again for CAT or other MBA entrances.

Calls from the new IIMs is a probability.
IIT-D and IIT-B husually ave cut-offs in excess in 97, thus again a slim chance. But MDI should give you a call.

Dear Akanksha,
Your low QA percentile may restrict your chances of getting IIM calls especially A, B and C. The minimum %ile limits does not guarantee a call. That is just the minimum criteria. Chances are slim for IITs as well. Please do not hesitate, go ahead and apply.

Section 2 : Score 104 (81.49 %)

I am M.Tech (Food Engineering) and my ultimate aim is PGP-ABM at IIMA or IIML. How much do I need for them in CAT 2014?
Thank You
Nakul, a call from IIM-L is highly unlikely. IIM-A considers your academics too while giving calls. If you are planning to write CAT in 2014, aim for a score of 95+ for ABM calls.
Sir I have 89.65 percentile. Category: NC-OBC. From where can I expect a call? Which IITs should I apply?
VJ, calls are possible from new IIMs. IIT Mumbai and Delhi are unlikely but all others are possible.
Greetings,
With 17/21 correct in section 1 and 17/20 correct in section 2 can I expect calls from iim’s? My acads: Xth 87%, XIIth 75%, BE(Mumbai university) 64%.. Am a fresher and belong to the general category. And is it practically possible to convert a iim call if I do get one?
Anon, please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an idea of your section wise CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However may estimate is that you should be above 95%ile in each section with an overall score greater than 97%ile. Given your decent academic record calls are possible from all IIMs except A/B/C. Calls are also likely from MDI, NITIE, IITs (except Mumbai) and most other colleges. Conversion of calls is a function of your performance in the interview so start PDP classes asap.
Given that you are from Mumbai University do take CET, JBIMS is as good as the IIMs.
Hi Sir,
I gave my CAT on 29th October, QA : 11/14 and VA :14/18, OA : 25/32.

Abhi, please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get an idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you can from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that with 25/32, you should be in the 85-90%ile range in CAT.
Hi Sir,
I entered the scores in CL PP and its showing 92 %tile, is that the correct estimate?
Please give your valuable guidance sir,
I have 2.5 yrs if work ex in IT , would you recommend joining a college in the range of 85-95 %ile if I get into one ?
Abhi, this is our estimate based on analysis of past CAT data. Some of the colleges in this range are good and should be considered. You can still apply to TAPMI MICA and IMT G.

sir i gave cat in 2012 and got 75 percentile..without any preparation at all…
so i thought of dropping this year and giving cat another shot.
i prepared well for around 6-7 months and appeared for CAT, IIFT, NMAT, SNAP and XAT.
unfortunately i don’t have hope of clearing any entrance exam..i really don’t know what went wrong..
kindly suggest me what to do now?? are there any decent MBA institutes under IP?? what is the average package after MBA from IP?
pls suggest me all the possible options available now..except job. i want to do MBA first.
a prompt reply would be appreciated.
sir also throw some light on bimtech noida.
its cat cutoff(overall and sectional), last date to apply, average placement, etc.
Suhani, BIMTECH NOIDA is a decent back up institute, its fee is in the range of Rs 8-9 lakh and cutoff will be around 90%ile. The cutoff for the sectoral MBA programs could be as low as 80%ile.
Suhani, my suggestion will be to pick up a job first. At your score there are hardly any decet MBA options. As a last effort you can take MAT in Feb’14 are look at Mumbai University coleges through DTE. While IP University will give you an MMBA its placements are not great.
Sorry,I missed mentioning. I belong to the General Category.

What would be the cut off for IITs?
I have applied to XIMB, IMT, SP Jain. Chances for a call?
Thanks in advance.
Suja, you have an excellent academic record and with over 95%ile in CAT and 19 month work experience interview calls are possible from all IIMs except IIM A & C. Some of the IIMs (eg Lucknow) will also give you extra marks for gender diversity (female) which should make your task easier.
XIMB, IMT G, SP Jain are all possible with a score of 95%ile. SP Jain especially has good probability due to your work experience and acads profile.
The cutoff for IIT Mumbai is usually around 99%ile while for IIT D it would be around 97%ile, the other IITs would be around 95%ile.
Thanks much GP Sir. So, can I assume that any score below 95 (say 92) will not fetch an IIM or an IIT call? (General Category). In that case…Sir, can I have hopes on the other institutes I mentioned above?
For SP Jain, I do not have a great record of extra-curricular activities 🙁
And, is IIM Shillong’s graduation cut off as high as >86.5%?(Read that it was the case last year)
Suja, at 92%ile calls from these colleges are difficult.
However SP Jain profile based call is possible due to your work experience and great acads. IMT G DCP is also possible.
Do not be worried about this figure of 86.5%, it would be an outcome and not the shortlisting criteria.
Hi Sir,
My Profile :
Xth : 95.4
XIIth : 92.8
Graduation : 79.2% (B.tech CSE)
No work-ex, currently in my final year.
CAT Attempts : 27 in section 1, sure about almost all.
23 in section 2, 8 LRs surely correct, 80% accuracy in others.
Placed at Samsung Research (7.68 LPA)
Sir would work ex be a hindrance in getting calls from A,B,C ?
Should I go for the job instead, gain work ex and try maybe after a couple of years ?
Vishesh, Hope you have checked the percentile predictor for an estimate of your CAT percentile. If not please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get an idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you can from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
My estimate is that with 27/27 in QADI and 19/23 in VALR you would be around 99.9%ile in CAT and with good acads profile calls from all IIMs and FMS should happen. In any case we need to wait for another 10 days.
sir my acads

i am pursing engineering from NIT
sir i have got a placement of 5.75 lpa in an outsourcing

Deepak, with your CAT performance I am inclined towards the job but my suggestion will be to wait for the CAT results before deciding. Which other MBA entrances have you appeared for?
sir i attempted 19 in quants section with 16 correct and 24 in verbal ability with 18 correct .i hav 84 % in class 10th ,76% in class 12th and 75 % aggregate in my graduation .could u plz tell my expected percentile and from where can i expect calls .sir i am from a goverment school would that be factor in my selection
Saurabh, please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get an idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you can from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that with 16/19 in QADI and 18/24 in VALR you should be around 97%ile in CAT and can expect calls from Category A instituters mentioned in the blogpost Application Time!.
You can also expect calls from IIT(D), NITIE, S.P.Jai and MDI.
Your being from a govt school will not be a factor in shortlisting.
thank you sir.
could you also give me brief about colleges such as imi delhi, mica, Irma,kj somaiya.
the percentile predictor is showing 97.59 percentile.
sir i gave my cat on 29th oct evening shift and i read i read in reviews that i was a difficult slot comparitively, how much that could effect the percentile.
and sir with such percentile could i expect a call from iim indore or lucknow.
Saurabh, you should apply to MICA but the others can at best be considered as a backup for someone expecting over 97%ile in CAT. Calls from IIM L, I and K are possible, good marks in X, XII, Graduation will be helpful in this case.
Normalisation has only a marginal impact, suggest you do not worry about it.

Sir i have no work experience.
With such academics and cat score can i expect calls from any IIM’s?
Nikhil, as a general category candidate with 97%ile in CAT calls from the top IIMs are unlikely but you can expect calls from Category A institutes mentioned in the blogpost Application Time!
Calls are also possible from IIT(D), NITIE, S.P.Jain and MDI.
Sir, I am expecting atleast 12/15 and 14/20 correct in CAT. Should I be applying for FMS and NITIE?
Please Reply. Thanks 🙂
Sabya, with 12/15 in QADI and 14/20 in VALR you are likely to be below 90%ile and as a general category candidate are unlikely to get calls from FMS or PGDIM of NITIE. You can however get a call from PGDISEM of NITIE.
Thanks Sir…Also, considering the fact that I am from Odisha and also the fact that XIMB has increased its number of seats (60 numbers I guess), could I expect a call from the XIMB??
Sabya, it is possible and let us hope for the best.
Sorry i left to mention that I am from general category.
Sir took my CAT on 10 Nov, In section 1 expecting Quant 10/12 and in VALR 13/17 .
My 10th % is 79.4%

@GP. Sir, I have recently checked my CAT percentile in CLPP. I am getting a 97.9 on the best (and normally expected case) and 90.9 on the worst case possible. I have applied to all IIMS, SP Jain, and MDI. Should I apply for FMS? Cut off for FMS? I am a NC-OBC candidate with 87,81.5 and 70 in X, XII and grad respectively. work-ex of 41 months. I know IIM A and B are out. How about the other old IIMS? also got a 109 in SNAP. Will SIBM and SCMHRD can be the best backups I can have? 19(15-18) qs in VA and 21(15-19) in LR.
Karthek, I have been travelling and hence the delay. Apologise for the same.
As a NC OBC candidate you have a good chance of a call from FMS and you should apply for its MBA program. I will not rule out IIMA and B at this stage, your acads profile is above average for IIM A and your work experience will help you get a call from IIM B. Hope you have applied to NITIE and MDI, also do apply to IIT Mumbai and Delhi after the results.
For SIBM and SCMHRD please check the SNAP Exam Zone in the CL Exam Corner.

Do apply to FMS if you have not done so already. My suggestion is to start PDP classes immediately to ensure you are well prepared for the personality assessment process.

CL PP is fairly accurate and if your estimated correct is on dot then the estimated percentile will also be fairly close.

Ashish, you should still qualify as a NC-OBC candidate. You are a adult and no longer dependent upon your parents so as long as your individual income is below the limit you should be able to avail of the category benefits.
Work experience will be helpful for getting interview call from some institutes (eg IIM B) but most of the IIMs/IITs give very small weight to work experience. Either way, due to your not so good academic record, as a NC-OBC candidate you should target 95%ile to ensure calls from all IIMs, IITs and NITIE.

Xth-83.83,XII-87.5..both state(andhra pradesh)..i have a work exp.of 9 months.my extra cir.activity profile is good.
what are the chances for me getting into FMS, n other topp iim’s?
Kiran Banoth, over 85%ile in CAT with good acads and ST category should get you calls from all IIMs, all IITs, NITIE and FMS.
Sir,
Does LIBA, LBSIM, NIRMA open their admission forms once again after the CAT results are out?
Nitesh, this is unlikely but let us hope for the best.
Hello Sir, My overall %ile is estimated by the percentile predictor at around 98, with sectional %ile for QA/DI just on borderline 90 and VA/LR at 99..
My acads :
10th – 91.8 (CBSE)
12th – 97.3 (Tamil Nadu)
B.E – 9.3 CGPA
Work exp : 40 months..
Can you please advise if I would be able to get calls from IIMs? And if in worst case, the sectional cut off of QA/DI falls below 90, then would I still get any call?
Thanks in advance..
Hari, with excellent academic record you should be able to get calls from most of the IIMs despite a 90%ile in QADI. For a general category candidate, 90%ile is usually over the sectional cut off but it is on the edge. IIM B should be possible due to your work experience and IIM C is ruled out since it requires over 99.5%ile.
Hello Sir,
I am a regular reader of your posts. I had taken up CAT 2013, on November 10th. I belong to the General category, I attempted 13 in Part 1 (12 correct) and 22 in Part 2 (18-19 correct). I accidentally entered a wrong estimate in your CL percentile predictor, and sent an email to reset, but it hasn’t worked yet. Can you please tell me if I will clear cutoffs with these scores ? Will I get percentile more than 94% ? I am very nervous at this stage.
Thanks.
Dilip, I have not received the mail, please forward it to gp@careerlauncher.com, will have it done tomorrow.
My estimate is that you should be around 90%ile in QADI and 95%ile in VALR. You overall score should also be around 95%ile.
Hi sir,
I appeared for CAT 2013 on 8th Nov. My attempts
QADI: 14(10 correct)
VALR: 26( all LR question answered correctly, other questions not very sure, assuming at least 60% were correctly answered)
Academics: 10th – 87%
12th -83%
Grad-57%
category- NC OBC
work exp -42 months
Do i have any chance of getting into any of the top IIMs?
Anonymous, please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However may estimate is that you could be in the 85-90%ile bracket. Calls from top IIMs could be difficult due to low graduation marks but cannot be ruled out.
Dear GP Sir,
Please help as I am not able to log in to the percentile calculator. I am really confused about this: I attempted my CAT in the last slot i.e. on 11th Nov. IN QADI, I attempted 14 questions, out of which 12 are correct. In VALR I attempted 22 questions out of which at least 18-19 should be correct. So a raw score of 84-88. What could be my estimated percentile?
Anubandh, Please check the True CAT %ile Predictor again. If the problem persists then please send a email to support@careerlauncher.com with a cc to me at gp@careerlauncher.com
My estimate is that 12/14 in QADI should be around 85%ile, 18/22 in VALR should be around 95%ile and your overall score should be in the 90-95%ile range.
Hello sir,
By mistake sir i entered wrong marks in cat 2013 application form, i recently noticed it . since i cant make any changes how can i rectify it.
thanks.
Amit, this is not a bigh problem. Please send a webmail to Prometric using the link given on the Contact Us page. Also send a email catcentre2013@iimidr.ac.in with the desired change. A copy of this mail will be useful in case any issue arises.
thank you very much sir.

Out if high work pressure this is all I have for this year.
Do I be having some category advantage to exploit.
I understand the shown cut off on iim website and percentile of those called for interview have much differences bit do I have any chance to get any IIM call this year?
What is the minimum percentile required to fetch an iim call.
Please advise and provide your insight.
Please do not provide a beautifully portrayed diplomat answer.
Ram Prasad, as a SC candidate with very good acads profile, 15 month work experience but 69.xx%ile in CAT you will miss out on most of the IIM calls but if you are around 75%ile then you will get calls from almost all the IIMs. IIM C is however ruled out. Your good academic record can help you get IIM A even at 69.xx%ile. To get IIM C you should be around 83%ile in CAT. Your VALR accuracy will determine if you will/will not get IIM calls.
Sir, some days ago,the CL percentile predictor predicted 92% and i thought of not applying for other b-schools as i didnt have a good fighting change of converting my call, instead thought of giving a drop..but,now with the revised CL percentile predictor predicting 97%+..,i am now in a dilemma whether to fill the forms or not..
sir,how much can we rely on the CL percentile predictor??till what extend can it predict the nearest percentile..plz sir, give us some valuable insight on it..
regards
deep
Deep, The percentile predictor works on the basis of some statistical parameters which represent past CAT years trends and another set of indicators of the current CAT trends. Ever since the CAT exam window has concluded thousands of students have submitted fresh data to us. We have thus been able to get a better understanding of CAT 2013. At this point of time, we have a significantly large amount of data which was sufficient reason to revise our estimates. The current estimates are more accurate than the first estimate.
My suggestion is to fill up the forms based on the revised estimates and on the basis of Mock based Percentile Predictor.
Sir,
i wrote my CAT on 28th Oct…with an estimate of 9 correct out of 12 attempts in section1 and around 19 out of 23 in section2 ,previously True CAT percentile predictor showed me 77 percentile but now with the same figures it is showing 93 percentile…is it correct…and what can be the error margin?
Thank You.
Nitesh, the revised percentile is the correct one. We have updated the PErcentile PRedictor based on additional data. If your estimated attempts/correct are correct then there is unlikely to be any deviation.
Sir,
I tooky my CAT on 9th Nov.

However my estimate is that you are likely to be around 99%ile in CAT and have a chance of calls from all IIMs and FMS. IIM A could be a problem due to low graduation marks.
Sir, I took the test on 10th Nov. I have attempted around 15-16 questions in Quants and 20-21 questions in Verbal section. In Quants 2-3 questions and in Verbal 1-2 questions i was not very sure. I have 2.5yrs experience as of now. Could you please tell me what percentile i might get? and which colleges should I apply ?

My estimate is that with 33 correct out of 36 attempts you should be above 90%ile in CAT.
Respected Sir
My query is along these lines.
I was told by the TIME Director that what constitutes the crux of Normalization is the marks are graded as per difficulty level of individual questions in a slot.i.e in a particular slot, if a students gets around 7 very hard questions & gets these questions right, his scaled score due to this would be much higher..If this is true , would this put me at an advantage if i have attempted all the rcs in my slot of Nov 7th evening , where the general consensus was that rcs were the most toughest in my slot…so assuming i get my accuracy spot on (just assuming), would that affect my normalized scores positively in the end..
I know this post seems a bit inane & specualtive for one’s liking, but its my understanding that many people are grappling with the same issue..
Would love to hear your expert opinions on the same.
Thanks
Girish, there is no data to support this opinion on normalisation.
In CAT 2012 a student who answered all 9 LR questions correctly (and nothing else) had a score of 79-80%ile and this was true across all slots which means even so called difficult (comparatively) LR questions did not lead to any significant increase in percentile due to normalisation.
Hello GP Sir,
I wrote CAT on 28th October, 2013 in the afternoon slot.
I attempted 43 questions overall.
20 in QA/DI (with 16 correct)
23 in VA/LR (assuming 18 to be correct)
What can be the expected score?
Does the percentile predictor take into account the difficulty level of the test?
In my opinion, CAT’13 was difficult as compared to CAT’12
My Acads :
10th : 79.40%
12th : 81.40%

Sir, with this, what are my chances with colleges like NITIE, FMS, MDI and the IIMs (*new) ??
Kindly guide me Sir.
Rohit9, 34 correct out of 43 in CAT’13 is likely to result in a score of over 95%ile. While new IIMs, NITIE and MDI are possible but FMS is unlikely. Hopefully your accuracy will be better than wwhat you have assumed.
Sir, I have attempted 22 questions with 90% accuracy. what percentile can i expect and what colleges should i target?

My estimate is that your performance is likely to result in less than 50% and hence you should forget CAT and focus on the other papers – especially SNAP since it has a simpler QADI section.
Sir , can u plz tell me my percentile .

Respected Sir,
I appeared for the cat exam on the 7th Nov 3.15 slot
My attempts are as follows:
QA/DI -20 (90%accuracy)
VA/LR-(21) (unsure about accuracy)
There is a general consensus that the va/lr section in our slot was insanely tough and quant was probably on the easier-moderate side.. My query was whether the normalisation algorithm will reflect upon the difficulty level based on that intra-slot performance & then scale our scores accordingly.
My profile is as follows:
Xth-87.27
XII-84
B.E-62
WORK EX-32 months in a PSU Bank

Arvind, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that as a SC candidate with good acads record and work experience you should get calls from all IIMs. With 41 attempts even 10 incorrect answers will not be an issue.
Please contact your CL center and start PDP immediately so that you are well prepared for the selection process of all institutes.
Dear Sir,
I had CAT on 8th morning slot, was good but attempts in QA/DI were less – 08 and VA/LR – 22. What percentile(overall) I should assume for such a attempt??. Also, I have given all the proc mock’s and the predictor shows a percentile of around 80. Is there any chance with these attempts to score more…??
My previous background is:
Xth – 80.33(ICSE)
XIIth – 65(CBSE)
B.tech – 68
Work Exp – 14months(2012 pass out)
The B-school advisory shows institutes like GIM-Goa, SIIM, XIME & SIOM… How are these institutes on the placement front?, these are the back-up ones. I am in a very tough situation, awaiting for your response Sir…
Saurabh, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
Hello Sir,
I gave my CAT today in the 2nd slot.
QA – 13/15
VA – 20/24
On browsing through certain CAT exam blogs, I found that the QA section in my slot was considered tough by majority of the students across the country. So, keeping my fingers crossed and hoping normalisation does some magic, how much %ile can I expect in each section and overall ( with and without normalisation ).
Awaiting your response sir.
Ankit, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at CL Exam Corner to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that you should be around 90%ile in CAT. The normalisation process is an unknown commodity and how much will it improve is difficult to estimate. Suggest you forget CAT and now shift your focus to other exams.
gp sir ,
this is my first attempt (CAT) ,i graduated in 2010 (BCOM) 72% and since then i was engaged in my family business …
my 10th % was 81 and 12th 74 %..
I am confident to score above 87-88 percentile this year .
and i belong to sc category ..
my query is can i be able to get calls from any iims and
the fact that i was engaged with my family business makes me less probable candidate ..
sir ,can you suggest me something so that i can improve my profile ..
Sanju, as a SC candidate with decent academic record and work experience you will be able to get calls from all IIMs at a score of 87-88%ile. Family business is usually an advantage if you have good knowledge of the same.
sir,
i gave my cat on 29th oct, 2013
i attempted about 15 questions in QADI with about 10 correct
and about 20 attempts in VALR with about 18 correct.
i belong to the sc category.
what can be my percentile. and expected calls i may get?
my class tenth – 89%
12th- 81%

Avi, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
QADI with 10 correct out of 15 is a small issue but you should be able to clear the sectional cutoff. Your overall score should be around 80%ile and with good acads track record and work experience, as a SC candidate you should be able to get calls from most of the IIMs.
thank you sir,
and what about FMS?
and one more query sir,
i went through a no. of articles which briefed me that the placement package in any of the management institute is quite low for the reserved category candidates.
is it true.? if it is , then what should one do to get a salary of at least the average mark (a reserved student) if initially his percentile is not that comparable to the general category.
thank you.
Avi, FMS is likely to be a borderline case, so you should apply and hope for the best.
Regarding the package, many reserved category students do not have good academic track record and are unable to cope up with the pressure which results in poor performance in the program and hence their package is low. This is true for academically poor general category candidates also. So if you do well in the program you will not have a problem getting a good salary.
thank you sir.
am i going to get calls from iim-b , iim-c and iim -L.
Avi, IIM C is unlikely but the other two are possible.
Sir
I had my CAT on 5th Nov afternoon slot. My attempts are as follows:
QADI : 30 attempts (estimated 26 correct)
VALR : 30 attempts (estimated 21 correct, although it can be 1-2 more or less since I found the RCs very confusing with close options).
My academic record is:
10th : 95.5%
12th : 96.6%
Graduation : 97.5%
I am presently in my final year B.Tech at IIT Delhi
What is your estimate of my percentile and what are the chances of getting calls from IIM A,B and C?
Also, what is your estimate of the difficulty level of the paper in this slot. In the verbal section in the Proc mocks, I was scoring above 99% and the found the CAT Verbal confusing with very close options in many questions. With this score in VALR in the Proc mocks, I used to get above 99% percentile in Proc Mocks, but in the True Percentile Predictor by CL, it is showing estimated percentile in VALR as 97%. Why is that?
Ishan, With excellent academic record and with an estimated 99.5%ile+ in CAT (47 correct on 60 attempts), you have a good chance of a call from all IIMs and should start preparing for the next stage.
In VALR 21 correct out of 30 attempts translates to 18 net correct which will lead to 97-98%ile. In case you paper is deemed to be difficult the normalisation process will take increase it to 98-99%ile. To be sure of 99%ile in VALR one would need at least 20 net correct answers.
Sir
Thank you for your reply. Does accuracy play a role in deciding the final percentile, in the sense that if two people have the same raw score but with different accuracies, would they get different percentiles if the paper is the same. This is something which has been bothering me. Also sir what is your feeling about the difficulty level of 5th November afternoon slot.
Ishan, will be coming out with comparative difficulty level of slots after CAT is over.
Accuracy does not play any part in percentile calculation, all students with the same net score get the same percentile in the same slot/paper.
Respected Sir,
I belong to sc category and my academic record is as follows:
X-86.4%
XII-71.8%
Graduation-45.6%(NSIT), expected to reach 50% by the time of IIM interviews(in last year right now), but I have applied to CAT from my current %age that is 45.6,will the PI panel consider my updated %age or the one that I applied from??
if I get over 85 %ile….which among the top 6 IIMs viz A,B,C,L,I,K can I expect a call from?
Himanshu, do not worry about 45.6% or 50%, it is unlikely to change things. However if you get over 85%ile in CAt with at least 75%ile in each section then calls from almost all IIMs, FMS, IITs and NITIE are possible for you. You could however miss out on IIM A and B due to low marks in graduation.
Sir My true percentile score is 92.87.
In light of this new information, kindly answer my previous question 🙂
Himanshu, as I have mentioned above all IIMs, FMS, IITs and NITIE are possible for you. You could however miss out on IIM A and B due to low marks in graduation.
Hello Sir,
I gave CAT on 31st october in the morning slot and attempted 12 questions in QA and DI with 100% accuracy and 22 in VA and LR with 17-18 correct.
I belong to SC category and am a female candidate.
10th-86.4%
12th-89.6%
Graduation-65.3% (Delhi Technological University).
What percentile should I expect and can I get a call from old IIMs(A,B,C,I,K,L)?
Priya, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category.
However my estimate is that you are likely to be above 80%ile in QADI, above 90%ile in VALR and an aggregate of around 85%ile which along with your good academic track record, and a female SC student should get you calls from almost all the IIMs.
My suggestion is that you should not wait for the CAT result/calls and start PDP early so that you are well prepared for the GD-Interview stage. You are likely to get calls from FMS, IITs and NITIE also.
All the best.
Sir, My true percentile score is 88.67.
should I expect call from IIM A,B,C?
Priya, as a female SC candidate you are likely to get calls from all IIMs except IIM C. FMS is also on for you.
Sir, I m 4m NIT Warangal. In the mock tests which I have Taken my accuracy in QADI has been 75% and in VALR it is around 80%. How many questions I should attempt 2 get 99 %ile or a call 4m IIM A,B or C.
Do u have any special advice 4 students 4m IITs or NITs?
Tushar,
1. Calls from A, Band C need good academic track record (marks in school & college) along with a good CAT score. For your target attempts in CAT please refer to the blogpost CAT 2013: How many attempts for an IIM call?
2. Focus on past CAT apers and Mock CATs.

Sir, Which College i need to apply, Don’t want to waste my money in filling the form of those college which are out of reach from this performance please guide..
Anuj, you VALR at 15/17 has pulled you down to 90%ile and your acads track record is not great but as a NC OBC candidate you could still calls from the IIMs due to your work experience. Also you should apply to IITs and NITIE. Please check the B-School Advisory at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 for a complete list of colleges from where you can get a call, you can email the list to me at gp@careerlauncher.com for my comments.
Sir,
i took my CAT exam on 31st October in the afternoon shift.
following are my number of attempts.
Section 1 QA/DI : 16 Attempts( Expecting 12-13 to be correct)
Section 2 VA/LR : 25 Attempts( 21-22 are likely to be correct)
my academic record is not good.
X-86.1 %, XII- 71.6 %,(PCM). General Category. I am in my final year of engineering, what are my chances of getting into reputed colleges? if not what can i hope for or what should i do with my CAT score? I would really appreciate it if you can suggest me some good colleges suited to my estimated CAT score.
Sir, I really need some advice on this. help me out.
Thank you.
Somendra, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes from where you can get interview calls based on your category. Your acads is not outstanding but it is not bad either. My estimate is that you should be above 95%ile and will be able to get into a decent MBA institute. While QADI is a bit low (around 90%ile) you will be able to clear the sectional cutoff for almost all institutes. Also focus on SNAP, its QA is simpler and competition lesser.

Krish, most of the students find their slot to be more difficult than that of others. We will be able to give you slot wise difficulty level once the CAT window is over. In case your slot is more difficult than others then you could go up to 90%ile.
You have good acads record and as a NC-OBC candidate you can expect calls from all IIMs except IIMC. Start early for PDP – immediately after IIFT.
Respected Sir,
I took the CAT on 30 Oct, evening slot.
I attempted 19 questions in QADI with 18 or all 19 correct.
In VALR section, I attempted 24 questions, out of which I am sure of 19-20 questions. What can be my expected percentile.
Also can I expect calls from IIMs and other good B-schools.
I am from general category.
I had scored 92% in X, 90% in 12th and 83% in graduation. But I don’t have any work ex. Also I am from a private university. Will it affect calls or final selection in good B-schools ?
Thanks in advance 🙂
Apoorv, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you should apply to.
However my estimate is that you should be above 95%ile in both sections and an aggregate of over 98%ile. With good academic record you are likely to get calls from IIMs and other top B schools. Suggest you start PDP early to ensure that you are well prepared for the Personality Assessment Stage. You percentile and academic record should compensate for you lack of work experience. Private University does not matter.
Sir, I took the cat on 31 October slot 1.
I attempted 14 question in QADI with 13 correct and 16 questions in VALR with 14 correct.
What percentile should I expect and also I belong to SC category so can I get calls from top IIMs?
Thank you
Sarthak, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you should apply to.
however my estimate is that as a SC candidate you have done sufficient to get a call from the IIMs and other top institutes. Suggest that you start PDP to ensure that you are well prepared for the Personality assessment stage.
Thank YOu so much sir for your kind words 🙂
Can I expect a call from IIM-C?
true percentile score is 78.5.
Sir, My revised true percentile score is 91.27
Now can I expect a call from IIM A,B and C?
SArthak, you can expect a call from all IIMs, FMS and IITs.
Sarthak, IIMC has the highest cut offs among the IIMs as it has very low weight for acads+work experience. A score of above 80%ile would be required for IIMc so it is a borderline case.
Respected sir,
I gave my CAT today in the 2nd slot. I am of general category.
my attempts were as follows :
QA section : 19
VA section :21
I am not sure about the accuracy. also would like to say that LR which used to be my strongest point did not go well, as it was pretty tough. Following is my academic details.
10th – 90.4 %
12th – 93.8%
graduation – around 75%
can i expect any calls from the IIMs ?
regards
Devika, 40 attempts is fine and your breakup between the two sections is also okay. As long as you have upto 3 errors in each section you should be able to get calls from some of the IIMs because you have a good acads track record. The gender diversity marks will also be to your advantage.
Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B-school Advisory will also give you the list of institutes that you should apply to.
Hi GP Sir,
I gave CAT today, morning slot. This was my 2nd attempt. I felt it was a difficult paper. Not sure of the accuracy.
Attempts:
QA- 13-14
VA/LR- 18-19
A general category candidate, I will be completing 3 years of work experience in february 2014 in an IT MNC.
Sir my profile holds as:
10th- 88.4%
12th- 84.2%
Graduation- 79.5%
Sir, I had a dream of converting to coveted IIMs but dont know if it will be possible.. I need advice from you that will it be worth giving one more year of preparation and a try to CAT after completing 3 years of experience. Or I should plan and give GMAT as well next year and go for Executive MBA. I want to persue MBA from India only. Sir, i am in need of a genuine advice and counselling from you as to what sould i look forward to and plan. Really worrried. 🙁
Angel, I will not rule out IIMB completely. If you get over 85%ile in QADI and a total score of 92-03%ile, with 3 years work ex and good acads you have a chance. Similarly some of the new IIMs are also possible. YOu should also apply to SP Jain which gives good weightage to work experience. While more than 3 CAT attempts are no recommended, you can go for one last attempt in 2014 but should simultaneously take GMAT and target ISB Hyderabad also.
Please call me at 9811155160 in case you want to discuss this issue further.
Sir,
I had CAT yesterday afternoon slot, i.e. 30th oct,3:15.
I attempted around 16 in QADI with 14 correct and about 19-20 in VRLT with 18-19 correct.
My 10th percent(CBSE)=89.8
My 12th percent(CBSE)=94.2
My grad=86.6
Kindly tell me which IIM’s I should be hopeful, and which should I be definitely getting?
Sat, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B school Advisory will give you the list of institutes that you should apply to based on your estimated percentile.
However my estimate is that you are likely to be in the 90-95%ile range in CAT and calls from top IIMs are unlikely. However given your excellent marks in school/college IIMB and some of the new IIMs cannot be ruled out.
Hello sir
My attempt: 30 oct 1 slot
Qa/di- 16(2 -3 wrong max)
Lr/va – 22(1-2 wrong max)
Mock (cl)- percentile in 90-97%ile
What can i expect?
Akash Deep, Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile. The B school Advisory will give you the list of institutes that you should apply to based on your estimated percentile. However my estimate is that with a raw score of around 100 you should be around 95%ile.
sir if i get abet score of 90 will i be able to get a 93-95 percentile…as in CL facebook page it is mentioned that the score of 90 will lead to a 93-95 percentile? please do reply sir
Palak, yes it is likely to be around this mark. When is your CAT due?
sir 1st november…sir please give any last moment tips…
sir what are the important areas from algebra? as my quant is horrible..my lrdi is strong
sir please reply
sir do lbsim and imi delhi and fore have sectional cutoff?
sir please reply
Palak, Either there is no sectional cutoff or it is so low that it does not matter.
Dear Sir,
I wrote my Cat on 18th Evening slot and i found quant to be very tough as i had wrote CAT twice before and never saw that level of Difficulty, anyways my attempts as follows -:
QA – 12 ( Sure of 11)
VA – 21 ( with 90% accuracy )
i’m an SC candidate sir, so do you think above attempts given the accuracy would be good enough to fetch any of the IIM’s call?
my Profile being -:
X – 45%
XII – 77%
BBS ( SSCBS) – 60 %
Work Ex – 60 months
Please do revert
Thanks and Regards
Sunny
Sunny, 33 attempts with 3-4 errors would lead to an aggregate of 85-90%ile. With 11 correct in QA you should be able to clear the QADI sectional cutoffs for SC Category and hence calls from IIMs are possible. Suggest that you start preparing for the next stage.
Thanks for your revert sir! was it tough slot ? as you must have got the feedback from your students about the difficulty level
18th Slot 2
Hi sir,
I took my CAT on OCT 16 first slot. 1st section seemed to be difficult for me. Attended 13 in 1st section and 19 in second section both with more than 90% accuracy. How much percentile can i expect? will I get any IIM call? I belongs to General category.
Murugan, you would be in the 85-90%ile range but please fill in your attempt and estimated correct data in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an estimate of your likely CAT percentile. Due to low attempts in QADI a call from IIMs is unlikely for a general category candidate.
Hi sir,
1st day 1st slot quant section was very difficult. Many guys in tat batch felt the same. So irrespective of minimum no of attempts in quants can i clear sectional cut off there ( after normalization). Because according to me i can expect 11 or 12 correct in quants. ? What is the minimum percentile i require to get any iim call ( i belong to general category )
Murgan, 11 correct in QADI is likely to result in a score of 85%ile which may not be sufficient to clear the sectional cut off for a general category candidate.
Hello Sir,
I’m plagued with the bad habit of committing silly mistakes in mocks. I generally attempt around 18 in QA and 27 in VALR.
Although, the no of attempts hover around 45, my wrongs seem to be the thorn in the flesh ( 12-13 wrongs ).
I get around 3 wrongs in QA, and about 9-10 wrongs in VALR, out of which, I realize after analyzing , that I could have easily done 6-8 ques correctly out of the total wrongs.
My CAT is on the 8th of Nov, and I still have 4 mocks at my disposal, please share some tip or technique with which I can reduce my silly mistakes in the paper.
As per my analysis, I commit such silly mistakes ( reaallyyy sttuuupidd ) only because I find myself catching a train in order to maximise my attempts ( the pre-conceived notion ).
My VALR %ile still remains in the early 90s, but QA fluctuates depending upon the cutoff.
Please help…
Ankit, mas you have rightly pointed out most of the time silly mistakes are due to rushing through the question and jumping to the answer choice. So in the next 2 mocks try to slow down a bit to cut down the errors. You could reduce your target attempts to around 40-42 to avoid rushing through the questions. In QADI 17 correct should be the target and in VALR around 20-21 correct should be enough.
Sir please predict a percentile range for my score?
In ProMocks Based Predictor my estimated was around 96%ile. But I think I screwed up big time in actual CAT!
Please sir your experienced input will be of big help.
Thanks,
VJ
VJ, a raw score of 75 would be around 80%ile. Focus on the other tests – especially IIFT and SNAP since these two also have NC-OBC reservation. We can worry about XAT laer.
Sir if 75 raw score approximately equates to 80 %ile as per your above estimate, will a call from any new IIM or NITIE be possible at this range?
Work Ex: 1.3 yrs
VJ, my mistake, raw score of 75 should convert to around 90%ile in CAT and hence calls are possible.
sir if I attempt net 30 questions out of 90…will I able to get a score of 93-95 percentile…as I attempt only those questions in which I am 100 percent sure…so will 30 net correct attempts fetch me a 93 plus percentile? sir please do reply
Radhika, a raw score of 90 should be over 90%ile, however you should target at least 35-36 net correct answers since most of the good B schools have a cut off above 95%ile
Sir i have given my test today ..i attempted QA/DI13 quest(10 correct 3 wrong) and in LR/VA (8 Correct 6 wrong.) i am expcting around 40-50 marks..i am a st student. is there chance of getting call from new iims? and what will be my aprx percentile?
Shivam, 50 marks would be less than 50%ile hence you should forget about CAT and focus on your preparation of other papers.
Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile.
Sir, I gave CAT on 28th October (Slot 1) ; I am a general category student.
I attempted 17 questions in Section 1 with 16 for sure correct. And in VA , I attempted 24 questions with 21-22 sure shot correct.
Class X: 95% ; Class XII : 91% Graduation: 79.8%
What are the chances of etting an IIM call,Sir?
Anshu, I have answered this your query on FB, repeating it for your reference.
Good academic record and with QA around 95%ile and VALR around 98-99%ile so a very good chances of calls from IIMs, do start PDP immediately.
Please enter your attempt and estimated correct in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile.
Can you somehow show your graduation marks a 80%?
Hehelo sir Hello sir,
I beg to defer with few of your analysis.
my frnds attempted 16-17 Quant and 19-20 VA in CAT’12 and secured 97 percentile. I know prometric’s algorithm is very complex and very much unpredicatble. But on an average I believe
18-20 Quant and 21-22 VA with 90% accuracy would be enough to get a percentile between 97-98. While the CAT percentile predictor shows 94%tile only. I think it is bit less
Bruce, a raw score of 105 was required last year to get a 97%ile. Thus attempts in 16-17 in QADI and 19-20 in VALR with no error would mean 97%ile.
The predictor is based on the last years data and will need to be verified again this year based on fresh data. What are your attempts and estimated correct in CAT’13?
hello sir…I have done all the questions of careerlauncher worksheet..practiced all the cat papers and took proc mock…sir I hav’nt solved the topic test and section test..will I be able to attempt 6-7 questions of quants correctly? sir please do reply
Neelam, this is sufficient but why are you aiming so low?
sir I have only done cat papers, careerlauncher sheets sums which were done in class and revised the proc mock. I havent touched the funda book and topic test section test and loosing all the confidence…i have my exam on 1st nov
sir one more question I would like to put up id my first section attempts are low but in the second section attempts are good so for category A and b+ institutes do they consider the percentile section wise or overall will be considered? person attempting 15 in QADI and 15 in VALR is same as one attempting 10 in QADI and 20 in VALR? the percentile will be the same?
Neelam, Most of the institutes do not have sectional cutoffs, it is by and large restricted to IIMs, XLRI, MDI, SP Jain and IIFT. So focus on maximising your score in VALR.
thank you sir for such a quick response…regards
hello sir,
i have given my CAT on 26th oct slot -1, though i checked my attempts on true percentile predictor .. but it wasnt satisfying to me
My acads :
Xth :- 83.5
XIIth :- 77.2
B.Tech:- 68 (a spoilsport 🙁 )
i attempted 13 in QA ( 12 correct)
and 16 in VA (13 correct)
category :- SC
i know the attempts are very few but sir please tell me my chances of getting a call from good clgs and an estimate of probable percentile .
🙂
Pri28, this should result in an overall score in the region of 80%ile with around 75%ile in the sections. With a decent academic record you are in line for calls from the IIMs. What does the Percentile Predictor say?
sir it says around 60%
that really scared me off :/
thank u so much sir for ur reply 🙂
Pri28, hope my gut feel is correct but the percentile predictor is based on extensive data collected last year. So forget about CAT now and move to preparing for your next paper.
Sir Below are my details:
Category: NC-OBC
QADI: 15 attempt – 12 correct 🙁
VALR: 20 attempt – 15 correct (worst case scenario)
Work Exp: 16 months
Approx raw score of around 75
GP sir what percentile should I expect, and which colleges should I apply to considering my category?
VJ, in your worst case scenario you are a couple of questions short of the desired net correct attempts but calls from IIMs are possible. Please fill in your attempt and estimated correct attempts at http://www.cateerlauncher.com/cat2013 in the True CAT Percentile Predictor, to check your estimated percentile. The B School Advisory will also suggest the institutes you should apply to based on your percentile and category.
Sir if I may add.
Class 10: 81.5
Class 12: 85.6
B.Tech: 80.8
Taken the possibilities should I apply to IITs and NITIE at this score?
VJ, IIT Bombay and Delhi are not possible but NITIE and the other IITs should be possible for a NC OBC candidate at this score.
Sir at what percentile does LBSIM,New Delhi gives out calls in my category? Should I apply thr?
Sir also as per your estimate how much can be my percentile here? (CL Percentile Predictor is saying 73)
VJ, LBSIM does not have reservations so no category wise cut offs. The cut off would be over 90%ile.
Sir, I am a general category engineering student. I took CAT on 21oct, evening slot. I found quant to be very difficult and attempted 15 questions (14 correct), while verbal was moderate (Attempted-25, correct-20). What pecentile can i expect??
As my academics is not very good (82% in Xth, 82% in Diploma in Engg and 71% in BE), should i expect any IIM call? Moreover, which b-schools should I apply to, if any?
Farhan, 14 correct in QADI could give around 90%ile which is good enough to clear the sectional cutoff but in VALR you would be above 95%ile. Please fill in your attempt and estimated correct attempts at http://www.cateerlauncher.com/cat2013 in the True CAT Percentile Predictor, to check your estimated percentile. The B School Advisory will also suggest the institutes you should apply to based on your percentile and category.
Your graduation score is a bit low and hence a call from the top IIMs is unlikely but calls from the new IIMs is possible.
sir, my data
xth=78%(state board westbengal)
xii th=71%(west bengal)
b tech =70%(currently pursuing b tech final year)
(NC OBC- female)
till now mocks 97 percentile +
cl percentile predictor says 99 percentile on the basis of my mocks
sir my question to you can i dream or expect for an iim call?
if i shd expected so, then how much percentile i have to score?
my cat is on 7th afternoon slot.
sir please do reply
Nav, as a NC OBC female candidate you have a good chance of a call from the top IIMs if you can replicate our performance of the mocks. Just focus on your practice and revision of Mock CATs and past CAT papers.
Sir,my exam was on 25th morning slot.I felt the QA was on the tougher side.I attempted 13 in QA/DI and 24 in VA/LR(my strength).Overall i attempted 37(with 85% accuracy),my profile is:(SC category) X:79.8% XII:69.8% B.Tech:66% What percentile can i expect, can you tell me please? And also if i should apply for NITIE or not?
Himanshu, your attempts in VALR are very good and while QADI appears to be low, it should be sufficient to get a call from the IIMs in the SC category. You should apply to NITIE and also to IITs.
Please fill in your attempt and estimated correct details in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an estimate of your CAT percentile, the B school Advisor will also tell you which institutes are likely to give you a call at this percentile.
hello sir..if I get a net score of 82 what will be my percentile? please reply…..
sir are we getting 3 marks for one correct answer and -1 for wrong answer? am i right sir?
Jagrity, yes raw scores are calculated with +3 and -1. CAT releases the normalised (and scaled) scores given out of 225 in each section effectively making it as +7.5 and -2.5.
Jagrity, a score of 82 should result in a 80-85%ile, please fill in your attempt and estimated correct details in the True Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an estimate of your CAT percentile, the B school Advisor will also tell you which institutes are likely to give you a call at this percentile.
thankyou sir…sir after clicking the login with facebook link via sis account nothing is being shown…sir i attempted 15 questions from first section in which i am sure all are correct..and in section 2 I have attempted 21 questions out of which 19 are surely correct…what will be my overall percentile? sir please do reply
Jagrity, just login directly on the http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 page using your facebook ID.
Sir, I am NCOBC category student with 4 years of work experience in IT.
My profile socre for IIMC is 6 / 23 and IIMB is 25.09 / 45.
How many attempts/percentile should I target to get a call from both colleges and have a realistic chance of converting.
BS, with low profile scores you should target at least 90%ile in each section and 95%ile aggregate to have a good chance of converting calls from the top IIMs.
Sir,
I gave CAT today in 2nd slot.
Mt attempts are-
QA 19(16 Correct 🙁 )
VA 27(22-25 Correct)
Can you give a percentile range?
And what will be percentile in QA?
I checked in True percentile predictor its showing around 97.
BS,You have good attempts and now it boils down to your accuracy.
In QADI 16/19 should led to 90%ile in but if it is 17-18/19 then over 95%ile is possible.
In VALR 22-25/27 is likely to be between 98 and 99.5%ile.
Your aggregate score would be in the 96-99%ile depending upon your accuracy.
what should be the attempt and the percentile for SC candidate to get a cal from FMS?
Neeru, you can get a call at 80%ile but converting it would be difficult. Suggest you target 90%ile to have a realistic chance of making it to the final list.
Which previous year question papers should we refer for LR questions?
Regards 🙂
Abin, go through all the CAT papers of 1990-2008 for LR questions, these will add up to around 100 questions.
sir if i attempt 15 questions from each section…with 95 percent accuracy then will i be able to get a 90 percentile plus? as I have the habit of not attempting those questions in which i am not sure…please reply sir
Mansi, 15 attempts with 1 error is likely to give a sectional score of less than 90%ile. My suggestion is to target around 17-18 attempts in each section with 1-2 errors.
sir but in careerlauncher kolkata facebook page it was posted that net 90 score will fetch 95 percentile
Divya, 15 attempts in each section with 1 error will give you a net score of 82.
Respected Sir
I have a sincere request to give me your advice regarding the following issue.
I am a current chemical engineering student in 4th year but due to a late decision for a mba, am contemplating of preparng for cat 2014 though givng cat 2013 too.Since that wud imply a drop year i plan to pursue short term courses in DU alongside, will the drop year still be a detterent?
My profile is X 90.5
XII 90.4
Grad (around 78)
My aim is only IIM A,B,C
Thanking You
Piyush
Piyush, Give your best shot to CAT this year and hopefully you will make it to the top IIMs. You have the advantage of not expecting anything. The only glitch is less than 80% in graduation which can be a problem for IIM A and B. While it may not be possible try and push the graduation percentage to 80.
While dropping a year is not a big problem for most of the institutes (they will however discuss it in the interview), I do not recommend it because CAT preparation is not a full time job, work experience will help you in the interview stage and job acts as a back up – but this is an individual decision.
My suggestion is that you should start your preparation for CAT’14 in January so that by the time you finish your graduation you would have covered a significant distance. Participate in campus placements or pick up a job from outside and start working on completing your engineering.
All the best.
Thank you so much sir for your invaluable advice.Sir because campus placement not happening and i cant concentrate on both gate and cat i have decided to pursue cat and try my best to reach 80 in graduation.
Piyush
Hi Sir,
Can you please tell how much does the accuracy matters in an examination like CAT? For Example,will18 correct answers out of 20 attempts will fetch me a higher percentile than 20 correct answers out of 25 attempts?
P.S. I am asking this question in order to know whether to attempt more questions is an advantage or a disadvantage?
Vikas, accuracy does not matter, same net score leads to the same percentile.
Hi Sir,
I gave my shot today.. attempted 18 in QADI and 23 in VALR with 80% accuracy in both sections. I belong to OBC-NC category. My profile.. X : 92%, XII: 90%, B.E : 79%, work ex: 2 years.. Do i have a chance of getting calls from older IIMs?
Raj, 18+23 is a good attempt and as a NC OBC candidate if you are able to get 15-16 correct answers in each section then you should get calls from all the IIMs. Please do check your estimated CAT percentile by filling up the attempt and estimated correct attempts data at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an idea of your likely CAT percentile. You need over 85%ile in each section and over 93%ile in aggregate to get calls from all IIMs.
Sir i attempted 11 ques frm qa with minimum of 9 ques correct and attempted 15 ques frm valr with minimum of 10-11 ques correct, in 24th october 2013 10 AM batch. then CAT predictor is indicating 39.62 percentile. How far this statistics correct?
Dibyajyoti, 9 out of 11 in QADI and 10 out of 15 in VALR leads to a net score of 50 (on +3 and -1) which is likely to be below 50%ile. My suggestion is to forget CAT and shift your focus to SNAP and other MBA entrances.
GP sir,
Can u pls guide me what strategy should i opt for preparing fr SNAP, based on my capability??!! Wether i should practice all the PROC Mock ques or anything specific??
Dibyajyoti, take a couple of old SNAP papers. I’ll be writing an article on SNAP shortly.
Hi Sir
Can you please help me with IIFT pattern. What I have got to know from various sites is that for IIFT the ENG and LR/DI sec is quite important as compared to the QA.
Sir can you please write a blog on other exams like IIFT and XAT.
Sangita, will be writing a post on IIFT in the next 3-4 days.
Sir alot has been said about trignometry making an appearance in CAT 2013. Exactly what sort of questions are asked? Could you please shed some light on this
Utkarsh, it will not be possible for me to share the detail;s without violating the NDA so would refrain from answering this query.
Oh. Then to rephrase my question, what should be my strategy and points to focus on while preparing trignometry?
Utkarsh, apologise for the delay. Please mug up the basic formulla like sin(A+B), cos(A+B), tan(A+B), etc.
sir please give me some guru gyan about va lr section
specifically for logical reasoning….
Ajeet, most of the slots have had a 2 attemptable and 1 difficult RC passages and LR sets so if you can attempt these four and about 8-9 questions of usage you would have done a decent job. Ideally you should consider all 3 passages or all 3 LR sets depending upon your preference.
sir as per CAT 2013 analysis initial slots were of moderate difficulty level, but now the analysis shows that the recent slots become difficult.so now there difficulty level is more than PROC MOCK TEST’S or they are now both of same difficulty level…?
Rachit, the degree of difficulty of almost all slots is similar and an attempt of around 20 in QADI and 22 in VALR can be considered to be good.
sir i am through with the cat papers and the proc mock…I wont be able to complete the whole unproc mock..sir can you please tell the important test of unproc mock? and sir is data sufficiency important for lrdi? sir please do reply
Divya, DS has not appeared this year in CAT and hence you can ignore this question type. All unprocs are equally important and you can choose any. Just make sure that you analyse each paper and revise questions regularly.
Sir,
Difficulty level of L.R.has increased significantly this year. Many of my friends who took C.A.T. have suffered a lot by attempting L.R.in Round 1 this year.Even I have the habit of tackling L.R.first.Should I change my way and attempt RC’s and EU first?I dont want to waste my first 20 min for nothing as my friends did.I have my C.A.T.ON 29TH.
Karan, this is an individual call and based on your comfort level you can choose to attempt LR in R1 or R2. However most of the students have reported 1 difficult and 2 do-able LR sets and if attempting LR in R1 target 2 sets and come back to the third one after covering EU and RC.
Hello sir,
I have my CAT on 29th, amid all the “quant-tough , DI must attempt” reviews everyday. I realize taking my DI from average to a better level and increasing my speed in DI should be my priority in the last days. How and where do u suggest i should practice from?
given that i have revised most of the DI sets from proc mocks.
Gunjan, the best place to practice DI would be the old CAT papers of 1990-98.
Sir, my attempt was 11-12 in sec1 and 22-23 in sec2. I can assume the accuracy to be more than 90 because i have the habit of not attempting doubtful ques. Reading your above comments, i have inferred that my sec1 attempt is not enough to clear cut-offs. The pc-predictor has given my pc-ile to be 93 which is quite high with the above data. With almost same figures, my pc-ile in prock mock 10 was around 63 only…why there is so much deviation? I am focusing on iift for now. But should i expect anything from cat with the above attempt?
Chetan, section 1 attempt is very low and in the best case it will convert to a score less than 85%ile. Section 2 is not a problem at all. This implies all institutes that have sectional cut offs are out for you and through CAT you can get only into those institutes that consider aggregate score like IMT, DU colleges etc. However many good colleges accept both CAT and XAT scores and XAT hence becomes important for you. Forget CAT and focus on IIFT, SNAP and XAT.
Hello Sir, The updated pc-ile predictor shows 97.27pc-ile (82 in sec1 and 99 in sec2) instead of 93(earlier). The sectional cut off is 82.24(QA DI) with data as 12 attempted and 11 correct. I would like to ask you how much variation of pc-ile will be there particularly in sec1 if my correct ans decreases, say by 2 or 3 more ques? (estimated scaled score shown is 102)
PS- the follow up comments don’t come in emails. pls ask your team to make this facility available.
Chetan, 8/12 in QADI could bring you down to around around 70%ile.
Thanks for the feedback, will have this implemented.
Sir my exam is on 29th of this month what should my strategy be these days?
Vishnu, you should essentially focus on revision of Mocks and old CAT papers. You should however take one last Mock on 25th Oct’13.
Hi Sir,
I have attempted 42-43 questions in cat
18 in Sec 1 and 24-25 in Sec 2..Expecting around 34-35 right atleast.. My cat was on 21st Oct Slot 1.
In mock cats I have consistently scored 97+(in all IMS,CL and Time) with a few exceptions and in almost all the cases I have attempted less or same number of questions.
When I tried CL percentile predictor it showed 93 percentile with max 94… Dnt u think that’s bizarre? Please reply sir. Am all perplexed.Loosing hope.
P.S The sec-1 of CAT was one of the hardest(if not THE hardest) I have faced this season.
Shouvik, believe you have already had a discussion with the tech team on this. Please reenter from your account and confirm.
Hi Sir,
yes indeed I had a talk with the Tech Team.I have re-enter my stats and still getting 93 as my expected percentile.
Sir would love to hear it from you, what do u think about my attempts? and how much percentile do u think I would manage? Please do reply sir.
Shouvik, please give your complete data – attempts and estimated correct in each section.
Sir In Sec 1 I have attempted 18 Questions expecting atleast 15 (worst case) right.
Sec 2 I have attempted 22-23 Questions expecting atleast 19 right.
My marks:-
class x:- 75:
class xii – 73
b.tech :- 82.2
Work exp:- 19months.
Please let me know your opinion sir
Shouvik, in QADI (with 15 correct) you should be around 90%ile, in VALR it should be around 96%ile the aggregate should be around 95%ile. Normalisation could obviously boost your scores. With your marks in X and XII calls from the top IIMs would be difficult but calls from the newer ones cannot be ruled out.
Sir, what woud be the difficulty level of CAT ka Big boss as compared to the CAT papers that are coming this year? i gave it today and got 103,94%ile.
Jaspreet, it is at the same level as CAT.
Sir can u pls throw sum light on the sectional cutoffs for NMAT
Vishwaas, approximate curt offs were EU 55, LR 65 and QA 75 and total 210. Your target should be EU 60, LR 60 and QA 80 and total 215.
sir didnt get this??
All ques are of 1 mark I guess??
how many correct ques we need in every section??
I got that sir…
In nmat flt 1..I cleared all cutoffs that u have mentioned but my overall percentile was only 85..
why is so??
Vishwaas, NMAT typically has lower percentile cutoffs as the number of students appearing for the exam is much lower than CAT.
Vishwaas, +3 for every correct answer and no negative marking.
Hello Sir,
My CAT is on 8th Nov. Till now, I have been doing mocks ( procs + unprocs ), along with the CAT based sectional tests.
I still have 8 unprocs left with me, along with 8 CAT based sectional tests ( QA + DI & VA+ LR ).
But, I haven’t touched past CAT papers, assuming the ques would have been covered in the CAT based sectional tests.
So, what should I do now ?? Should I continue with mocks + sectional tests or should I divert to past CAT papers ??
Kindly help
One more thing sir, which I would like to ask,
In the QA section, m able to narrow down to 2 choices ( in the R2 and R3 ques ), increasing the probability to 50-50. However, if I mark any one of these two choices, I end up getting it wrong ( correct answer is always the other option 🙁 .
So, should I carry on with this strategy in my CAT also ( taking a gamble that lady luck could be on my side that day ) or should I leave the ques unattempted even after narrowing my answer choices to two ???
Ankit, since it is not working for you it should be discontinued.
Ankit, go to the CAT papers or CAT based sectional tests immediately. Questions have been repeated from these papers. You can take a Mock once in 3 days with the last Mock on 4th Nov.
Sir,
As already mentioned, I ve been doing the CAT based sectional tests.
Are they enough to cover the previous CAT papers important ques or should I still go through the complete past CAT papers before my D-DAY ??
Right now, I do 1 QA-DI and 1 VA-LR CAT based sectional test along with a mock test daily ( and of course, along with the analysis).
Ankit, you should definitely attempt all QA and LR questions from all CAT papers as most of the repitition is from these areas.
Thanks alot sir.
So, sir, which year ques papers shall I do to cover the important QA and LR ques ??
Ankit, please refer to the blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin, it gives the CAT papers which are important for all the sections.
hello sir..sir I have solved the sums from the test gym and CL worksheets…and i am giving unproc mocks now…sir my funda book is untouched…will i be able to attempt 9-10 questions from section 1? iv4 solved all the sums which are there i the test gym…sir please do reply
Shalini, you should be able to solve 9-10 questions in CAT QADI based on what you have covered. However do attempt the past CAT papers also as suggested in my blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin since questions from old CAT papers are being repeated in QADI.
sir the questions which are there in test gtm does it covers all the questions frm past cat papers? from 2004–2008 the papers are given..
Shalini, they cover most of the important questions, attemt them first and then go through the past CAT papers.
Hi Sir
I belong to General category and I have taken the test today on 21st October. Though I was performing well in the mockcats with percentile prediction of around 98%, I couldnt perform as expected. I have attempted 13-14 with 100% accuracy in Section 1 and 20 in Section 2. I am highly disappointed with my performance. Sir can you please suggest as to what can I do next.
sir,
I also have the same condition… I attempted 11-12 in section 1 and 16 in section 2. i don’t know what was the reason for such a low attempt.. Some questions i remembered and i attempted at home but was unable to do.. in CL mocks my min attempt used to be around 15-16… Can you please guide me about my actual CAT percentile….
Ashana, you attempts are low for a general category candidate and will have to move on. Suggest you start focussing on the other papers immediately. Please let me know your acads + work ex record and the other papers that you are planning to write to guide you on the way forward.
To check your estimated percentile fill in your attempts and estimated correct answers at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013/#, the B school Advisory will also help you identify the colleges that you can get a call from.
Sir
Im a bcom third year student with no work experience. If i get all my 11 ques correct in my quant with 14 correct in eng cn i get percentile between 90 to 95 to get my desired b school. And one thing more ir there any way to get a copy of ques paper which came to me because im very desperate to find out the reasons for such a low attempt and even that below to CL mocks.
Ashana, unfortunately at 25 correct answers you are unlikely to be over 85%ile and it is not possible to get a copy of your CAT paper. My suggestion is to forget CAT, take a break of couple of days and then start working for the other papers. SNAP, IIFT and XAT are still there to help you get into a top notch B-school.
Sangita, 13-14 with 100% accuracy could still give you over 85%ile in QADI and along with 20 (couple of errors) in VALR your aggregate score could be close to 95%ile which will get you calls from the newer IIMs. IIM B could also be possible if your have good acads record and/or work experience. Please do check your estimated percentile by putting in your attempts and estimated correct answers at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013/# the B school Advisory will also help you identify the colleges that you can get a call from.
Please let me know your acads + work ex record and the other papers that you are planning to write to guide you on the way forward.
Hi Sir
My acads is as follow
class 10-89.67%
Class 12-90.6%
Btech-90.5%
I have around 27 months experience in IT sector.
I also have my Nmat, Iift, Snap, XAT lined up.
As for nmat in the mocks am getting around 255.
Thanks a lot sir…ur words are a great relief.
Sangita
Sangita, given your acads (90% throughout) and work experience of 27 months IIM B is possible, the key obviously is your QADI percentile.
Your Mock NMAT Mock score is good and if you can replicate this performance in NMAT then you will be among the toppers. While you should consider NM Mumbai, SIBM, SCMHRD and XIMB your focus has to be on XLRI and IIFT. Take a break of a couple of days and then start with IIFT preparation by attempting a past paper to get a hang of the paper pattern and structure. Then identify the weak areas and start working on them. Start with XLRI after IIFT. SNAP preparation will happen simultaneously but after IIFT do attempt the last 5 year SNAP papers.
Hello Sir
Just wanted to know how can we get our NMAT scores in order to decide on retake.
I have given my NMAT on 23rd Oct.
Thanks
Sangita
Sangita, NMAT releases the scores of the candidates in batches. The students who have taken the test in the rist 20 days of NMAT can expect to get their scores by end Oct – early Nov.
sir ,i would like to know that how is the cat score calculated(percentile)
is the cat score compared with slot in which you appear or with all the slots?
Shubham, in the compared with all the slots.
Sir, I completed my cat test today (21 october 2013) , i think i managed to attend 12 questions in the Quant/DI Section and 22 questions in the Verbal section. i belong to the SC category, what percentile am i expecting? will it be enough to get an admission in any IIM’s?
Sooraj, Please fill up your attempt details at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013 to get an exact idea of your CAT percentile. My estimate is that you would clear the sectional cutoff (for SC category) in VALR comfortably even with 6 errors but your attempts in QADI are a bit low and its sectional cutoff will be managed only if the you have max of 2 errors. Overall I am hopeful of you getting calls from some of the IIMs.
thankyou sir, for ur valuable reply.. it was really helpful..
Sir,
I have heard that session 1 on 20 october was very difficult quant section only. Is that true???
Ashana, with the exception of morning slot of 16th Oct, the level of difficulty of all slots is around that of CAT 2012 and a good attempt in QADI is around 18-20 questions.
Sir,
I have a few questions to ask u.
a)Looking at my mock performances it is clear that I am doing better in un-proctored mocks than in mocks. Sir is it because relatively less no of ppl take un proctored mocks? Or are these papers easier? or some other reason?
b)I have also inferred that my performance (in %ile) improves in a paper when the overall cutoff is low (i.e the paper is difficult). I am taking CAT on 30th. Should I have chosen a later date?
c)I took un-proctored mock 13…found the paper tough…but to my surprise cutoff was relatively high. In what category would u keep that paper? I scored 73 (74%ile)…cutoff was 96. My percentiles in un-proc mock 4, 12, 14, 15 were 93, 89, 86 & 76.
d)got a notification that u would be analyzing un-proc mock 15. Where can I access it?
e) my score in the two sections fluctuate a lot. Like if I do well in QA/DI in one test then my VA/LR score in that test is usually low and vice-versa. I don’t know the reason.
Deep, my responses are given below:
a) There is no difference between Proc and Unproc Mocks but the fact that you are not being evaluated (publicly) reduces the pressure and hence you better performance, also you are most of the time more comfortable in your home/office environment. This is a very common phenomenon.
b) YOu cannot predict what kind of paper will come on any given day so the date has to be chosen based on when you think you will be best prepared.
c) Go through Mock 13 again and identify the reasons for poor performance. Based on your your performance in Mocks 90-95%ile in CAT is definitely on. Focus on revising the CAT and Mock CAT papers, you can take Mocks on 23rd and 26/27th Oct.
d) How I attempted Unproc Mock CAT 15 QADI & VALR are available in this blog itself.
e) The fluctuation could be because after doing well in Section 1 you tend to relax a bit in Section 2 or if Section 1 does not go well you pull yourself up.
Sir,
I am very sorry to tell you that I am very much purplexed at this stage having 10 days left for the D-Day.Whatever mocks i am taking whether it is a an unproc or something else i am not doing that well which i am capable. While analysing after every mock i felt that i can do almost 25-26 QA-DI with 95 % accuracy. But iduring the test i could not understand what is happening to me where have done only 20-21 with 6-7 wrongs.
Please help me out..
Waiting for ur valuable suggestion..
ARITRA CHATTERJEE
CL STUDENT
KOLKATA
Aritra, try relaxing a bit. You have possibly put yourself under pressure. Take a break from test and just focus an revising.
THANK YOU SIR…!!!
ARITRA
sir , I have tried alot but my accuracy still remains very poor 🙁 .. I have my exam on 30th October …. how many questions should i attempt to get 80%ile with 100 accuracy … because in order to attempt 30 questions as told by you I end up doing more of wrong answers … so now i want to attempt only those questions of which I am 100 sure… only 80%ile…
Ankita, I agree with your approach of and in the remaining days to CAT just focus on revising the question types that you plan top attempt in CAT.
For the target attempts Vs percentile please refer to the blogpost CAT 2013: How many attempts for an IIM call?. Target attempts (categorywise) for other institutes are given in additional videos at http://www.careerlauncher.biz/cat2013/
Sir,
My C.A.T. is on 29th October.I have done C.A.T. papers of quant from 2000-2008 and about 20 mocks of C.L.(Unproctored+Proctored) with their analysis. I did class exercise sheets and funda books regularly but I haven’t done revision of questions at all.In this week, should I attempt all the mocks again to build my confidence?(as I don’t want to do anything new).My mocks performance is 90 percentile plus maximum times.
I just want to control my mind during the exam and not lose confidence in this week.
Karan, revision is my preference. Go through all the CAT, Mock CAT and funda book MCQs again.
sir,
i have scored 125 marks in cmat sep 2013..
belongs to sc category …any chances of jbims or any good college?????
Sourabh, for an OMS candidate there are no reservations and hence at 125 no decent college is possible.
sir what about xiss ranchi?? is it a decent college???
Sourabh, XISS is a decent college but at 125 it may not be possible. XIXX is not a Govt run institute and hence it may not have any reservations.
Sir, plz upload e fundabook discussion videos of few more questions on algebra & number system. They are of great help, even at this point of time.
Sakshi, the process is on.
hello sir if I practice from the test gym n proc mocks…will that be enough?
Sir
The live analysis for unproc mock 15, has not been uploaded yet on sis acc. please check sir .
Rg, will have it done by tomorrow. Will upload it on this blog.
Thankyouu so much sir. Wish this could be possible for rest of the e-fundabook discussions also. Thanks again sir
Sir,
my i have taken my CAT exam. My next exam is of IIFT and my GK is very poor. so can u plz tell me from where should i prepare for the same.
Plz reply sir
Sharan, hope you have filled in your attempts in CAT at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013/, this will help us estimat your percentile and also suggest the way forward. The GK cutoff in IIFT last year was 1.67 so you need very few GK attempts to make it to the next stage. To prepare for GK you should go through the GK material in SIS, Gyandhara and the Management Compass.
Sir. proc cat have been very useful.. esp quant.. most of the questions of quant were from proc cat type of questions and i was very comfortable solving most of them…..
Ankit, this is good. How many did you attempt in each section? Hope you have filled in your attempts and estimated correct in the CAT’13 Percentile Predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.biz/cat2013. If not please do so as it will to enable us to guide you to the appropriate b schools.
In section 1:
attempts 21-22 with almost all correct. The questions were slightly difficult but were manageable and solvable.. most of the concepts were used in proc cats so that made it easier..
Section 2:
attempted around 17-18 with atleast 13 to be correct.
very difficult section. RCs somehow manageable with almost all 9 correct. LDR all were difficult and I could just crawl my way through 2 questions out of 9.
Attempted 3-4 va (left 1 pj, conclusion, word use each, and all grammar questions). Deliberately attempted less according to the negatives in proc Cat and the questions I honestly could not solve.
Should I fill SPjain, mdi, fms etc. Can i expect 90+ and calls from IIMs? I am in total fix as to what to do now after cat. Please share your words of wisdom.
Ankit, QADI is good but VALR at 13 estimated correct answers is a couple of questions less for a general category candidate. Unless your VALR is classified as difficult and scaling pushes you up top IIMs and FMS are unlikely. You can however get calls from MDI and SP Jain.
Aggregate of 90-95%ile is likely, to check your estimated CAT percentile, please fill in your attempts and estimated correct answers at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013/#, the B school Advisory will also help you identify the colleges that you can get a call from.
Hello sir,
first of all i love your articles..
i gave cat yesterday..oct 18, slot 2.
attempted around 20 all correct in qa.. but i found section 2 very difficult.. did just 2 questions from ldr ( i found them very tough ) , almost all correct questions from RCs (9 questions) and in va avoided Sentence correction ( i do them almost always wrong) , 1 concluding paragraph and 2 parajumbles. So in total my attempts are around 17 here with 2-3 incorrect probably. Based on this what should be my next step. Do i stand a chance to get above 90%ile and get IIM calls.. should i fill fms, and other institutes who accept cat.. in total dilemma… please share some words of wisdom…
Ankit, you have a good QADI attempt and if they are all correct then you would be around 99%ile in QADI. 17 attempts in VALR is with 2-3 incorrect could be a shade less than the required number and this would be between 90 to 95%ile. Calls from IIMs are possible depending upon your profile score.
Please fill up your attempts in the percentile predictor at http://www.careerlauncher.com/cat2013/home.jsp to get a clear idea of your CAT percentile on the basis of which the “B School Advisory” will suggest the institutes that you should apply to. You can email the list it generates to me for further guidance.
Sir
I saw your book on flipkart. Are all the answers in model test papers solved by you,
by using those SQC and non-conventional methods techinques , which are
simpler and make ques easy to solve?
Also since efundabook videos discussions taken by you, is it pls possible
If u can cover rest of the imp topics sucj as numbers and geometry also
.pleasee sir…
Raghav, the book has both kind of solutions depending upon the question. Videos of other topics are being uploaded.
sir is data sufficiency questions and critical reasoning questions are imp for cat 2013? sir please do reply
Bhavya, DS and CR questions have not been reported by any student as yet.
Sir,
Although I know that we are not allowed to take anything in the paper but still want to confirm that we just have to go empty hand in the paper.
Ashana, only admit card and ID proof are allowed. However you can keep your phone etc in safe custody with the test center staff.
sir, how much one should attempt in section-1& sec-2 out of 30 questions with 70% accuracy to get 80 %ile i.e. to cross sectional cut-off.
Akash, As suggested in the video target 17 correct answers in each section for clearing the sectional cutoffs for the IIMs.
Target attempts for other institutes (category wise) are given in additional videos at http://www.careerlauncher.biz/cat2013/
sir can u plz tell the number of attempts for PWD category also like u did for other categories. thank you
PaAram, PWD category is the most difficult to estimate because of very few seats it has high variation in cut offs. However it will typically be between the SC and NC-OBC cutoffs, thus you should target about 16-17 attempts in each section with total attempts around 33-35.
Hello Sir,
If i attempt 17-18 Q in section 1 and 10 Q in section 2 .with 90-95% accuracy.how much percentile can i expect.Is their any possibility that i can get 90+.
sir i belong to general category.should i attempt more number of questions in verbal section or i should leave it with this only .
Ayan, if verbal is your strength area and you can attempt more then you should go for it else restrict yourself to what you care comfortable with.
Ayan, Section 1 is fine assuming 1-2 errors. 10 attempts in Section 2 is low and will give you a score of around 70-75%ile which is not sufficient to clear the sectional cutoffs. To have a chance you need to attempt at least 15-16 questions.
Since you appear to be good in QADI, your strategy should be to focus on LR, Para Completion, Para Jumble & Fill in the blanks. Target attempting only 1 RC passage. The 9 LR questions will take not more than 30 minutes (10 minutes per set), the 8-9 questions of EU will take max of 20 minutes and in the remaining time attempt the RC passage whose subject you are comfortable with. Even if you do only the LR and EU questions in 70 minutes you will have a chance.
For RC please go through the blogposts by Gejo in this blog.
Sir, just wanted to know that is it good to go through all the fundabooks
In the end once again or give more mock test.
Also i have a small request. Since E-fundabook discussion videos on sis acc are taken by you
Can you please cover the remaining imp topics (like geometry and numbers)
In span of next 10-12 days and please get them uploaded on sis account.
Will be very much grateful to you. Its a humble request.
Bijoy, go for Mock CATs rather than fundabooks as suggested in the blogpost 4 Weeks to CAT’13 – Ab billi door nahin
Videos of Number System and Algebra have been uploaded and the Geometry videos will be done in a couple of days.
Happy to know that sir. 🙂
For numbers only 2 exercises have been uploaded till now.
hello sir,
What exactly is the purpose of the 21st Unproctured mock?
Are we supposed to attempt it and the analyse our strategy via the video?
Gunjan, this test is on the lines of CAT’12 so you can use it for practice. Many students wanted to understand my thought process so this test was taken live-online and recorded. In the test I kept on speaking the reasons for attempting/leaving a questions and how I attempted the paper. This is kind of a guide to test taking.
sir I wanted to ask that for CAT can we leave the level 3 sums of lrdi n qa which are there in the test gym and funda book..or do we need to solve..sir please do reply
Sonika, Attempt as per your current level and go up slowly/ Ideally you should go for test gym adaptive since it will give you those questions that are of your level and will help you go to the next level. In this process if you do not reach Level 3 then it is not a problem but if you are already at level 3 then you should be practicing them.
Hi Sir,
Please solve this question for me . The question is given below :-
The length of a common cord of two circles of radii 15 cm & 20 cm whose centers are 25 cm apart is?
a. 24 b.25 c.15 d.20
yes sir do explain ….. according to the fromula m getting the answer as 100 root 6 …. (625-25)..??
it’s simple,
15-20-25, rt angled triangle is formed. by using area formula, we can find out half length of common chord, double it and get the answer.
it’s 12*2=24
Answer will be 24. You get right angled triangles with height being the altitude.
24 is the answer..
Solve by pythagorus theorem. Let the lenght of common chord be d.
The circles will overlap eachother by 10cm. Let distance of chord from smaller circle be x and that from bigger circle be y such that x+y=10.
Two equations will be formed.
(15)^2 = (d/2)^2 + (5+x)^2
and
(20)^2 = (d/2)^2 + (10+y)^2
Solving you will get d = 24.
sir is it neccesary that I attempt all unproc mock test before cat ??
I have my exam on 30th Oct…. and have around 6-7 in un-procs left undone….
Ankita, it is not necessary to attempt all Mock CATs before your CAT.
sir, today i gave cat ..quant 14 net correct .verbal 22 attempted..8 lr sure shot correct..hope the rmng questions @ 70% accuracy..thanks for ur starategies….i belong to obc-nc category..any chance for old or news ? (X mark : 91%, XII: 93.5%, B.tech : 71%, work ex: 5 years( IT and banking sector)..need your advice regarding this..
u wil surely get an IIM call , prepare for GD/PI …. ALL THE BEST….WELL DONE..:)..:)
Srinivasan, please fill up the details of your attempts in CAT Percentile Predictor to get an exact idea the Percentile based on your attempts. As an NC-OBC candidate with 14 net correct in QADI, 15 net correct in VALR and a good academic record (leading to good profile score), you can get calls from all IIMs.
Hello Sir,
I am a DA candidate and could not find posts talking of cut-offs for DA category and consecutively the number of attempts we should target.
Sir, my profile is :
10th-(86.80)%
12th-(87)%
B.Tech Comp-(7.15)CGPA
Work Ex-(25)months
If you could give some suggestions on number of attempts and cut-offs for IIM-A/B/C.
Harshal, you will have a good profile score and hence calls from all the IIMs are possible. The PWD category cutoff is the most difficult to estimate because of very few seats and has high variation in cut offs. However it will typically be between the SC and NC-OBC cutoffs, thus you should target about 16-17 attempts in each section with total attempts around 33-35. You can go to as low as 15 attempts in each section.
Hi Sir,
This year a new type of RC question has been reported — ” What would you like to ask the author”. I request you put a blog post which has a few examples on this type of question and the methodology for handling them.
Regards,
Rahul
Rahul, this question type had come last year also. Answer this question type by eliminating the choices. You will not ask anything that is not realated to the subject (scope & scale) of the passage) or anything that i already clearly mentioned in the passages. You will ask something which take the idea of the passage forward. The rules of Para completion and inferential questions can be used here.
sir,
what is the cutoff mark of cl procted test w.r.to cat score ?
Is it w r to iim cutoff or some thing else?
Rahul, it is wrt IIMs.
Sir, I wanted to know according to your First day first show analysis, which chapters should I work upon and also how to handle questions based on integral solution???
Sumeet, the first two slots of CAT covered all topics and question types so focus on what you are good at and ensure high accuracy. The number of integral solutions questions are solved mostly by a combination of making cases and logic. Do them only if you are comfortable with these question types else leave them unattempted.
Thank you Sir…:)..
Sir, i also wanted to know from where i can practise more venn diagram questions ,mainly of 4 combination set ??
Sumeet, unfortunately I am not aware of any specific source of this question type. Your mocks a few such questions additionally you can search on the net.
hello sir..sir I wanted to know that the level of difficulty in all the sections was more difficult than the proc and unproc test in cat? please do reply sir…
Sonika, the difficulty level in both the slots of day 1 was less than that of Mock CATs.
Sir I saw your first review where you said LR ws slightly tough, but ws doable..sir how was the level of RCs and LR as compared to the mocks…? For the last few days from where should I prsctice them?
Sir, I need some clarity on a particular issue. There’s all this talk of maintaining a good accuracy as it presumably plays a part in the normalization process. I wanted to know if two candidates, from the same slot, score the same raw score with different accuracies, say 70% and 85%. Does the candidate with 85% accuracy get a higher percentile?
Arpit, candidates with the same raw score (net of negatives) in the same slot get the same percentiles.
Sir, I completely disagree with you analysis of CAT 2013 cut-off.
You mentioned that one should attempt 21 questions with 18-19 correct to get 95 percentile. I and 3 of my friends wrote CAT 2012 and I attempted just 16 questions in Sec-1 and 17 in Sec-2 got 98.3 and 97.9 percentiles and many NC_OBC friend attempted just 11 in sec-1 and got 91.26 and My SC friend, currently studying in FMS, attempted just 8 questions in Sec-1 and got 78.12 percentile.
Even in Proc-CATs very few attempt 18 or more, then How can u tell all these.
Krish, in CAT’12 a net of 17 correct answers would have given 95%ile and 21 correct with 85% accuracy implies 3 wrong answers, since there is a negative of 1/3rd it would mean a net of 17 correct answers. Remember there is a normalisation process due to which the percentile scores of easier papers are suppressed and those of difficult papers increased at the same net correct answers. I do not know what kind of paper (easy/difficult) you will get so I have to give you a target attempt that will give you 95%ile even in an easy paper.
Your attempts of 16 and 17 in the two sections converting to a 98%ile implies that your paper was possibly a considered as difficult by Prometric. While 8 attempts in Sec 1 can convert to 78%ile in CAT’12 (in a difficult paper) because at lower scores the percentile changes are high, 11 attempts leading to 91%ile looks difficult to me.
The reason for low attempts in Proc Mocks is that the low level of preparation and the fact that students peak closer to CAT. You would also notice that the average attempts have increased from Proc Mock 1 to 10.
Hello sir,
Can you advise me which Unproctored mocks from SIS are in line with format and cut off of cat 2012/ 2013?
Varenya, all Mocks (Proctored + Unproctored) are designed to be 10-15% more difficult than CAT and are based on the pattern of CAT’11 & ’12 so you can go for any Mock.
Sir, I was unable to attend the analysis of the first day,
Sir would you please tell about the LR questions?? And RCs..
were these questions similar to the ones in mocks…
Neeraj, overall all slots of CAT have been easier than Mock CATs esp LR and RC. The webinar of the analysis is available at http://www.careerlauncher.biz/cat2013
Hi Sir,
In your today’s analysis of paper(webinar) , you told that there was a scheduling type of LR question . What do you mean by scheduling type of LR , I am not able to comprehend this terminology . Please clarify what LR type you mean when you say that scheduling type of LR.
Thanks and regards,
Rahul Arora
Rahul, scheduling or time tabling types are a kind of arrangement questions. An example could be that there are 6 subjects (S1 to S6) that need to be scheduled over 3 days and each day has 2 slots – morning and afternoon. There would be conditions attached to how the subjects can be scheduled.
I finally understood your point sir, thanks for explaining this to me so nicely.
Regards,
Rahul
Sir for my profile scores, year 2009 isn’t available in the SIS. i passed my 10th in 2009. kindly help.
Neha, please check, it has been changed.
Thanks Sir, this clarifies a lot.
However, in my particular case, I find Quants extremely tough but Verbal reasonably easy. I am usually able to attempt 24-25 in verbal, with 20-21 correct. In quants, I hover around 15 attempts with 12-13 correct.
Would this translate to the same as your analysis, or would I miss the quant cut-off, being a general category applicant?
VV, yes a general category candidate with 15 attempts and 12-13 correct in QADI is likely to miss the sectional cutoff. See if you attempt 2-3 extra questions and get around 15 correct. Some of the institutes that do not have sectional cutoffs (like FMS) would would still consider you.
But Sir, could you just enlighten me on the fact that the new IIMs have a sectional cut off requirement of some 70 percentile in both the sections, and a few of my seniors have suggested that, a 25-30 raw score in quants section and 30-35 in VA section, usually helps us clear this cut off, not for the major IIMs but atleast for the newer ones. Is that not true?
Thanks,
Swati
Swati, while some of the new IIMs have their initial sectional cutoff at 70 or 75%ile for general category, hardly anyone with such a low percentile makes it to the final list so this is not what you should be targeting.
Sir how much importance should we give to normalization ? because i feel by giving over emphasis on normalization , i end up attempting less and when i dont care..my accuracy suffers and normalization eats up my %ile.
What is the approximate penalty for accuracy, is what my question is to be precise…
TIA GP sir…
Tejashwi, you should focus on only what is in your control i.e. your performance in the paper. Normalisation is is beyond your control so ignore and focus on your preparation and while taking the test focus on solving the questions.
The raw scores are calculated with +3 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer. All students in a slot with same raw score get the same percentile score.
Sir ,
last year one of my seniors wrote CAT and secured 95 percentile and he was a SC candidate . He didn’t get a call from IIM Calcutta though he converted the calls from IIM Shillong and IIM Khozhikode . My question to you is what minimum percentile is required to convert the calls ??
Priyanshu, this is very surprising because SC candidates with over 85%ile are studying in IIM C. The only reason could be very poor profile scores- marks in X and XII.
