Around the country in 30 days. Now, back for CAT ’12

Let me begin by apologizing for my long-ish absence. This year the SQC meant a complete Bharat –darshan for me, from Delhi, Patiala, Dehradun, Varanasi, Kanpur, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and so many other cities, I was practically living out of my suitcase for the last few days. Now I’m not complaining – there is nothing better I like than meeting all you guys and sharing my Quant fundas but it also meant that even with my best intentions I had to take a sabbatical from the blog.

To all those who’ve written to me with questions and comments – I will be getting back to all of you very soon. For all those waiting for my next blog – I just finished it on an overnight train journey from Dehradun – how I attempted Mock 9. This is ready and should be up in a few hours from now.

Guys, CAT ’12 is almost here…and there’s so much that I still want to share with you! I will take up many critical topics right up till D-Day on this blog. There are a few webinars also lined up in the next few days…if you’re taking CAT ’12, make sure you attend these – there’s only so much I can share in a blog so the webinar format is perfect for these crucial topics.

Now that you all know how to crack quant smartly, it’s time to get down to even more serious business – analysis of past years’ papers, a session on LR-DI and a couple of others. Stay focused, study smart…it’s only a month till showtime and I intend to put every day to full use. Are you guys with me?

  1. hi sir, i have been following ur blog since the past few days. i mean since the time i came to know about it. but i cant find quant mock 1, 2 and all…can i find them on this blog?

    • Disha, It appears that you are not a CL student. Proctored Mocks are available to CL students and I had put up some of these on my blog to guide students. Suggest that you check up with any friends who are enrolled with CL.

  2. Hello sir,
I have been maintaining my score upto 70-80%ile in Mocks.
i have a big problem dealing with RCs and there are 25 days left for my CAT Exam ..
What should be my approach so that i can do well in RCs.
    Waiting for your reply

    • Gaurav, the key to doing well in RC usually in choosing the right passage. Suggest that you scan the passages to identify the subject of the passages. Read only those passages whose subjects you are comfortable with and then move on to the questions. Do not hesitate in going back to the passage if you need to for a question. In this manner you can attempt 2 passages in 20 minutes.

  3. Sir,
I have read your posts regularly. Also attended your SQC session. Those were really of great help…
My accuracy is as low as 60% while giving the Mocks, but while doing the same questions again during analysing the Mock, I m able to get most of my questions correct.

Sir, please suggest on improving my accuracy during the exam-time…

    Regards,
    Rakesh

    • Rakesh, poor accuracy is usually due to:
      a) The habit of rushing thru the question & choices and missing out on critical information or jumping to the answer with incomplete data. This can be corrected only by being concious of the problem and and slowing down while reading the question or while calculating.
      b) Another reason is lack of revision, suggest that you go thru all the Mock CAT and past CAT papers that you have taken so far, identify the important questions including the ones in which you have made silly mistakes or unforced errors and revise them regularly.

  4. hello sir, i have recently joined your blog, i went through all your earlier blogs they were really helpful. However, sir i have analysed tat i’m missing out some of the easiest questions in my mocks, due to which my scores have been in the range of 75 -80%tiles. In english i’m comfortable with the RC’s& parajumbles, i’m also able to solve 8 out of 10 LR’s correctly, most of the time i’m also able to solve 2 out of 3 paracompletion’s correct. In quants i’m solving only 15 questions correct. now just 25 days left to my D-Day, what should i focus on , so tat i can solve a minimum of 45 questions correctly in CAT?

    • Natasha, You are in a great situation in English, LR, RC, PJ & PC contribute about 24-25 out of 30 questions in VALR. In QA also 15 attempt is not bad but is less than what is required for a call from the IIMs and will need to increase the number of correct ansers to around 20. In the remaining 25 days your focus should be CAT 1990-2008 papers and Mock CATs only.

Start with CAT 1990-99 CAT papers and attempt all QA, DI and EU questions. The current QA and DI questions are similar to what has come in these CAT papers. The EU section of these papers will give you sufficient practice of grammar, fill in the blanks, PJ and PC questions. Once you complete these papers you can then move on to QA and Ennglish section of CAT 2000-08 papers. Do not attempt the DI section of these papers because it is more difficult than what one expects in CAT now.
Mock CATs have to continue simultaneously and you can take a Mock CAT once in 3 days and please do not forget to revise regularly.

      All the best.

      • Thankyou sir. But, the problem here is that i’m generally not able to solve all the rc’s during my mocks.I generally solve rc’s at the end, should i change it to solving LR’s first, then rc’s and then the rest part, or should i stick to earlier strategy only?

  5. Hello Sir. Firstly, thank you so much for those wonderful quant fundas. I can see it helping me improve my score. But I still get stuck up with some questions and am unable to find a quicker way to solve. So, I wished to ask that where can I discuss those questions with you. And next is that I could see that there is an e-Smart DI Cracker lined up for today at 3:00 PM, but sir due to office I won’t be able to attend the session. Also, you have mentioned that there will be some more coming up. So, sir please can these sessions be repeated for us on weekends, or provided offline. I and I believe no one would wish to miss these sessions. Thank you sir. Regards.

  6. Dear Sir,
Sir, Currently i have made a strategy of giving atleast one mock daily with complete analysis of it. But the problem is that my attempt rate is pretty slow. i can attempt only 16-18 questions sectionwise with not so gud accuracy. Is my current strategy okay ?I m ready to sacrifice anything for this cat. Please Guide.
    Thanx

  7. Hey GP

What is right place to ask some question?
BTW, it is “P is the product of first 30 multiples of 30. N is the total number of factors of P. In how many ways N can be written as the product of two natural numbers such that the HCF of these two natural numbers is 19?”
    OPtions “3,4,5,6”

Could you please help? I can’t solve it logically. Maths is taking too long.

  8. thank u sir for d precious guidance….

Sir I need ur suggestion……plz reply..

  9. Welcome back Sir… My humble request (on behalf of all the working people). Please organize these on weekends if possible. I understand late night may not be a feasible option for you & your team as you would be giving it live. So, 1 alternative can be if these sessions can be recorded & a link is posted, those who miss it during the live demonstration can go through & get benefited from the same

  10. sir i attended your online sqc on 16th sept ,you said at the the end of it that you will provide us a link so that we can access it anytime we want. i dont know where i will get that link please help me in this regard

  11. Hello sir, i have been reading your blog and attended the web session of smart quants cracker. Your strategy has definitely helped me in increasing my score in section 1. What i would request you to do is to please write about this years prediction (with respect to difficulty, score and number of attemps and percentile projections) and more importantly how after the start of this years window we can observe and alter our strategy a bit as per the common difficulty level of VA, LR, Quants & DI .( as in, if DI is coming to be a bit difficult in more number of cases, how can we approach the paper to get the maximum out of it). This would be really helpful sir.

  12. Sir I’m nt cmfrtable in two areas- 1) Typical questions of “Compound Interest”
    2) Level 3 Questions of “Time, Speed, Distance”
I wud be highly thankful to u if u wud please give few questions(Solved in ur way) on d topics mentioned…
    Thnku Sir …

  13. Hello Sir. I have been getting percentiles in the range of 90-94 in the mocks. Since only 20 days are left for CAT, which will be more beneficial- solving CAT papers from 1990 to 2008 or attempting mock tests and sectional tests ?

  14. obviously sir,
we really need your fundas in other topics too..and really your sqc classes were too helpful..just need your blessing and wishes sir..

    Thank you.

  15. Thanks Sir!
Your guidance is really helpful. So please keep posting. Your blog are really motivating .
If possible do consider taking a webinar for VA.
    Thanks again
