NMAT 2017 Analysis

The test taking window of NMAT began on 7th October. The exam is conducted this year by GMAC, the organisation which conducts the GMAT exam. In general, there weren’t any technical glitches that were reported during the exam.

The Logical Reasoning section was slightly difficult. This section was dominated by singlets as there was only one LR set consisting 4 questions. Apart from that a good number of questions were of Critical Reasoning. The options in the CR questions were opinionated instead of being logical which made the questions ambiguous. A score of 60 – 63 is achievable and will be a good score.

The Quantitative Ability section, on both the days, was not extremely difficult. A student should lay a lot of emphasis on the topics like Arithmetic and Algebra because as many as 18 questions were from these areas. A student should aim to score high in this section as most of the questions were doable.

    • Anjali, if in two attempts you are not getting the desired score then it may not improve in the 3rd attempt also. Suggest that you focus on CAT and SNAP.

    • Piyush, the highest Verbal cutoff in the last 4 years for NM Mumbai has been 55 so you should clear the cutoff. With a score of 218 you should start with your PDP classes immediately after CAT.

    • Sumit, my estimate of XIMB HR cutoff is around 205 marks hence you should go for a retake. You can look at increasing your QA and LR scores.

    • Mayank, go for a retake, NM Mumbai cutoff is likely to be in the region of 208-210. Also LR should be at least 65, other two sections are fine.

    • Kunal, your VA and overall scores are low and calls from NM Mumbai/Hyd/Blr are unlikely. Suggest that you go for a retake. For Hyd/Blr your overall score should be atleast 200 and for Mumbai it should be at least 208.

      • Sir Thank you for the reply . XIMB accepts domicile quota and I am a domicile of Orissa … CAT and XAT cutoff for XIMB HR is 70 percentile for domicile quota ….so what will be the cutoff for domicile candidates through NMAT ?

    • Megha, unfortunately calls from NM Mumbai, Hyd & Blr are not possible at your score. In the retake you should target a score of 200+ for NM Hyd/Blr and 210 for NM Mumbai.

    • Anwesha, for NM Mumbai FTMBA your QA score is on the edge and hence you should go for a retake. Another 3 marks would get you to safety.

    • Sakshi, your QA score is on the edge and your overall score is about 3-5 marks short. Go for a retake to improves overall to 210 and QA to 75.

    i need ur crucial advice regarding my mba plans. I’m giving CL mocks and my percentile is varying from 60-75% as of now which is affecting my morale to score good in CAT.On the other hand i’ve my NMAT 15 days later and i’m quite confident in cracking nmat.
    So, is it advisable to focus more on nmat for these 15 days and secure a safe place in NMIMS Mumbai or should I still focus on CAT and compromise on the prep &strategies req to crack nmat.( the reason behind this is that to get into top b school min of 95% is req whereas nmat being comparatively easy is always an smart choice for an average student like me moreover NMIMS Mumbai being a Premier Institute with good placements.)

    • Kavya, you’re most likely to get cals from NM Bang and Hyd and LS will not be an issue. NM Mumbai will not happen at this score.

    • Kanak, at 192 NM Bangalore and Hyderabad are possible. For NM Mumbai a safe score is 210 and I do not expect the cutoff to be lower than 205.

  138. Hello GP Sir,
    I had bought the Question book – The Official Guide to NMAT by GMAC 2015 published by GMAC and had practiced from there. I could solve 95% of the questions from the book. While doing the test papers given there, i found them pretty easy and i was able to score quite decently. But when I gave the actual exam, I found the paper a lot more difficult than what i had solved/expected. I found the previous year question papers a lot easier than this years. I wouldn’t go that far to call the book ‘fake’ since it is advertised in the official NMAT website, so i would only assume that the paper was difficult this year. Therefore considering this difficulty level this year, do you think the cutoffs have any chance of going down? I have scored 200 in NMAT 2016.

    • Vishal, I don’t think that the NM Mumbai cutoff will be lower than 205, however with a score of 200 you should get a call from NM Bangalore and Hyderabad.

    • Avrajit, while everything seems to be fine LR is certainly on the borderline. It would’ve been better had it been somewhere above 64. You could go in for a retake and should also look forward to scoring high in SNAP and XAT.

    • Chirag, NM Mumbai call will not happen but NM Bang and Hyd are certain. You may go for a retake if you’re aiming for NM Mumbai. Also, aim high for XAT and SNAP.

    • Pramod, at this score NM Mumbai call will not happen. You could go in for a retake. Also consider scoring high in XAT and SNAP.

    • Saumya, this is a borderline case. You might just get a call. You must also consider filling up XAT (last date 10th dec) to target XLRI, XIMB, SP Jain.

    • Vaibahv, unfortunately at 188 calls are not possible from any of the NM institutes. Agree with your focus on CAT and SNAP over a retake.

    • Rohan, you will get a call from NM Mumbai, a higher score would have been helpful but it is your interview performance that will primarily determine if you will get a final call or not.
      Will a predicted percentile of over 99%ile, even NM Mumbai should be considered a back up.

    • Sougat, at your NMAT score you will get a call from NM Mumbai. Go for a retake only if you can increase your NMAT score to around 225.

    • Vikas, your QS score is low and if you have to move to a 210+ then it will need to go up by atleast 7-8 marks. similarly LR can also go up by around 5 marks. LS is fine.

    Do we have to do 70 questions correctly so as to get a score of 210 as each question is of 3 marks or there is scaled score for the final cutoff.if yes than can you please specify how many question we have to do correctly across sections so as to get 210 score

    • Rishabh, since 210 is a scaled score one cannot say if exactly 70 correct answers will result in a score of 210. Rather than focus on the number of correct answers in the paper suggest that you focus on ensuring a good score in each of the three sections.
      In LS out of 32 questions an attempt of 25+ is not difficult.
      In LR out of 40 questions an attempt of 30+ is comfortable.
      In QS out of 48 questions an attempt of 35+ is possible.
      This would mean 90 attempts out of 120 questions and will definitely result in a score of over 210.

I have read on different forums that a majority of students think that this year, the questions were a bit tougher than those of the last year.. Sir, would the cuts off change from last year? Can I expect a call from NMIMS Mumbai? Thank You in advance, Sir..

    • Satrthak, you should get a call from NM Mumbai, I do not expect the cutoff to be over 210, most probably it will be closer to 205. Also your sectional score are above the expected cutoffs.

    Why the level of difficulty given in CL NMAT mocks is considerably low as compared to actual test..
    I took the NMAT today n the type of questions..mainly in LR section were different as given in the mocks…
    Sir i am going for a retake…as i am completely sure i am gonna miss out of LR cutoff…
    Where in your opinion i should practice LR for the next shot.

    • Dushyant, CL mocks are based completely on the NMAT exam.
      In fact, in one of the NMAT exam slots a DI set was exactly the same as the one in the second NMAT Mock.

      Thus, while you might have found some questions different in your slot, that isn’t the general scenario.
      Try solving all CL mocks before taking your next attempt.

    I’m scoring 160-170 in my NMAT mocks with around 80-85% accuracy , but I’m not able to increase my speed and because of that I’m not able to mark all the questions. Please Help.

  171. Is past academic record a deciding factor for nmims? I have 78% in X, 61% in XII and 63% in Graduation. I am scoring around 200-210 in NMAT mocks. What are the chances of me converting nmims?
    Also the same query for iift what should be the target score to get into iift delhi?

    • Tejbir, for NMAT, higher the score – higher is the chance of call conversion. If you could take this 210 till about 225, you’re in for a great realistic chance of converting your NM Mumbai call.
      Nothing can be said about IIFT since over the last three years the difficulty of the paper and therefore the cutoffs have fluctuated drastically. In an easy IIFT paper, aim for a 50+ score.

    • Roop, a similar performance in the actual NMAT exam should put you in a great position of converting the NM Mumbai call.

    I took my nmat exam on Oct 24,2015
    It didn’t go as expected. The difficulty level and type of questions were a lot different from CL’s Nmat mocks.
    Kindly tell me when should I take my second attempt since I dnt think I’ll b able to clear the cutoff this time

    • Niti, if you have prepared well since then, you can look forward to take the second attempt before CAT so that you have room for a third attempt post CAT.
      But we would suggest that you prepare well and restrict it to two attempts.

    Ive completed quant. Half of LRDI. But havnt done anything in Verbal. I try doing RC’s but dont attain 100% accuracy. And i take about 20-25 minutes to solve one RC. Im too week in verbal and ive started panicing a lot about it. Pls help.

    • The cutoff for NMIMS, Mumbai is always in the range 208-212. Thus, based on your scores you have a good chance.
      Aim to score 220+ to have a very good chance of converting.

    • SHreya, please go through the VRC and Verbal section of all the mocks that you have taken. Revise the difficult words from this. This also includes previous year CAT papers.

    Recently i have given the nmat mock1 at home and my score was 125.
    I am basically getting trapped in selection and rejection of questions i.e. i am breaking my head over time consuming ones due to which i have to randomly mark the easy ones as per the time constaints.
    Sir i need your precious advice as what should be strategy to get a score of above 210 in nmat,as i am seriously looking forward to clear the cutoff for nmims(Mumbai).

    • Shreya, NMAT is a time game.
      Choosing the right questions is of utmost importance. Going by the trend the Reasoning section is slightly on the tougher side.
      Thus, you could start with that, followed by Quant and ending with Verbal. Take it one question at a time. If by looking at it you feel you can do it then solve, else randomly mark the answer, mark the review button and move on.
      If time permits come back to the questions you marked for review.
      You could follow this in all 3 sections.

    Can you please tell me how to attempt RC in NMAT. I get only maximum 5 minutes at last for attempting RC which is diffiuclt to manage. And i am missing out easier questions of VA if attempting RC in starting. Please let me know how should i go for VA section of NMAT?

  181. hello gp sir, i gave my nmat on 11th oct.. I guess i did fairly good in the language section, in LR i could not attempt 10-12 questions due to time shortage , in the QA section i marked most of the DI ques. arbitrarily since there wasn’t any time left to solve them( there were around 5-6 DI sets, which i came back to in the end). sir what could be my estimated score given i’ll have a decent level of accuracy.

    • Nandini considering you guessed about 20 questions in the Quant section (The DI questions), you could expect a score around 80 if you have 85% accuracy in the questions you did not guess. For Reasoning, considering 70% accuracy (since it’s slightly on the tougher side) you could expect a score of around 63-65.

    • Shreehari, anything in excess of 210 should be sufficient to get a call. Usually, scores above 220 more or less ensures a final conversion, but not necessary.

      Sir I am not getting good scores in mock . I cannot find out what happens to me when i give mocks but when i solve questions from Cat old papers and other materials i am able to solve them with ease
      but during mocks i find them difficult and have poor accuracy. I had covered all the materials and have solved many questions but that is not reflected in my mock scores .I regularly practice and also when i analyse mocks i am able to solve almost 80% of paper but during mocks i find difficulty in solving questions
      sir what could be the reason for that ,is it fault in my preparation or approach please help me as it is quite depressing for me.

My question to you is will the scores across the various slots during the entire 2.5 month window be normalized and scaled finally based on the difficulty level? [Last year my final scores were same as that of my respective window score 🙁 ]

    • Ankish, if you’re confident about your fundamentals you must take a mock and a previous year paper on alternate days. This should certainly be followed by a good in-depth analysis.

    How exactly do you analyse a mock? I’ve heard you multiple times saying that analysing a mock is the most important part of attempting a mock; but I simple fail to see how a mock should be effectively analysed.

    Test Gym Classic has 5 Sectional tests on NMATs. Are they close to the actual NMAT, or is the level of difficulty of actual NMAT higher.
    Also, are these tests sufficient or should one go for the NMAT Test series. I will be writing NMAT on December 1.

    • Ayush, the NMAT sectional tests will certainly help your prepare well for the NMAT level of difficulty. But it is important to have the complete mock practice for which you should go for a full fledged NMAT test series. Since your exam is on December 1 you have sufficient time to take all the tests.

    I have been trying to contact you for a long time but not receiving the replies for my post. I need your help a alot sir. I am an ex cl student but preparing by myself this year. I have thoroughly studied the quant syllabus and practised questions of all LODs. the issue is that my quant scores from last 5 mocks i.e mock cat 11,12,13,14,16 are 56,48,46,46,46 all with 80-85% accuracy and I am unable to figure out what to do to go ahead of this. in analysis I find that I am unable to attempt difficult and mod-diff questions. time analysis tells me that i do correct questions in 30 min and rest is wasted in unsuccessful attempts. What does this tell about my prep sir and how can I improve this? I just cannot afford a loophole in my prep because this is my 2nd chance. Your reply is awaited sir.

    • Kushagra, calm down as persistence is the only key. It is good that you have done an in-depth analysis of your mocks and have come to some conclusion. If you believe that this is due to lack of clarity of concepts it is advised that you quickly go through all the concepts that you are struggling with. If these are silly mistakes athen go a little deeper and find out what kind of silly mistakes are these. Are these due to error in reading the questions or what else. Moreover, I think its more about exposure to more number of questions and practice. Since the remaining 30 mins is spent in futile attempts, that means that you need to practice different kinds of questions to gain familiarity with all the types.
      Solve previous year questions and reattempt these mocks whenever you have time.
