Cracking XAT

With CAT results round the corner it is natural to be anxious. But I suggest it would be better to focus on the upcoming XAT exam.

To begin with, let us first look at the differences between CAT and XAT.  

  1. Level of difficulty: XAT has always been much more difficult than CAT.  With DM and Verbal Ability forming nearly two- third of the main exam, and essay forming an integral part of the first round, XAT is slightly more inclined towards Language and Verbal Skills.
  2. Level of transparency: XAT will be much  more categorical in disclosing the result date and  the cut-offs  and also in confessing the mistake, if anything goes wrong (2 years back many students who cleared the cut–off didn’t get call initially, but when this was brought to the notice of XAT authorities they confessed the mistake and gave calls to all the students who cleared the cut-off)
  3. And of course Decision Making and General Knowledge sections: (More on this later)

Now let us move us move to the paper solving strategy but before that few things that I keep in mind while attempting the paper.

Things that I keep in Mind for XAT:

  • To me XAT is test of one’s knowledge more than the speed.  In this exam, I read each and every question.  The difficulty level of the paper permits me to see all the questions at least once and leave the difficult questions.  I believe one has to be good at “judge & pick”
  •  I go with the mindset that if I am finding it difficult majority of others would also be finding it difficult.
  •  My objective is to clear the cut off in Quant and score heavily either in DM or Verbal or in both.
  • Length of the DM cases and RCs do not bother me, even if lengthy, I do read them.

Now coming to the sections in the order of my attempt.

Section 1 Decision Making: Someone having slightest of the common sense and the comprehension skill will not only find this section interesting but also easy to attempt.  I usually give 45-50 minutes to this section and try to maximise my attempts.  In a typical DM question the case has one or few objectives to be met and there are few constraints on the way to objectives.  So, the first thing I do is to identify the constraints and the objectives to be met. While attempting I tick the option which fulfils the objective and not the options which may sound ideal/best. Also, DM the cases can be quite long, last year there were two page long cases.  I am sure those who read the case would have found it easy.

This section may also have Decision Making Caselets requiring Mathematical Interpretation.  Last year there were two such caselets (One easy and one difficult) with 7 questions in total.  There was a simple question in which the correct answer was not in the option. Deliberately done? No one knows that. But certainly this section is the test of one’s ability to think clearly.

Tip:  Do not be intimidated, irrespective of the length or the complexity of the question, read it once.  Do not mark the ideal answer choice; keep in mind the objectives and the constraints; look for the option which compromises on none.  If things are going right (if you feel so), then make a kill by giving extra 5-7 minutes.

Section 2 Verbal Ability: Hate it or like it, one has to attempt CR and RC in XAT. Fortunately, I like them.  I give 50-55 minutes to this section. While attempting RCs and CRs I have to read most passages twice.  It is important to understand what is being asked in a question. Many a times, I commit the mistake of ticking the option which is given in the passage but has not been asked for in the question. This will surely happen in XAT too but then I am prepared for it.  PJs are perhaps the easiest part of this section.  The grammar questions require good understanding of the language and are not easy to attempt.

Tip:  Go with the mindset of attempting RCs, if not all, then at least two. Many students feel that it is a waste of time, but I think it has more to do with the mental make-up. If you are not attempting RCs, you will not score in this section.  Solve PJs, fill ups and grammar first, then RC passages and then CR questions.   Good thing with the Verbal ability is that you always feel that you have marked the right option 🙂

Section 3 Quant & DI: I keep 40-45 minutes for this section with the belief and idea that I have to solve only 9-10 questions accurately. I search for DI caselets and attempt them first. I always prefer a calculation intensive DI over a logical DI because I know that through tedious manual work I can get to the right answer and that is my only objective here, Accuracy! No smartness.  While attempting maths questions I search for Arithmetic questions and attempt them first followed by Algebra and Number systems. I rarely attempt Geometry and never if diagram is not given.  I have a belief that if I pick my strength questions here then I will easily clear the cut off.

Tip: Unlike verbal where everybody believes that he knows something about it, if one does not know maths, one does not know it!!  So be selective here. Solve DI first (last year DI were simple) and then pick the questions from your area of strength.

Section 4 GK:   As far as GK is concerned we all are in the same boat.  I think a score of 5-6 is sufficient, provided you do get a call for second round from XLRI. I don’t think anybody requires more than 10 minutes for this section.  And for the preparation part of GK, at this stage I will try to be abreast with the happenings of past 3 months.

Part B Essay:  It is all about analysing a topic. All I can say is that I never shy away from stating my opinions. XLRI people for sure like opinions more than facts.

Note: Please remember to have Plan B ready.  What I have suggested is my Plan A.  Go with a clear mind and a broad approach.  Stick to the time allotment which you have planned for yourself. There would be very few candidates who can afford to give say 1 hour or more to Quant (because it is toughest of all the sections) and get a call from XLRI. Play to your strengths but do not be left behind in those parts were most of the call getters will score i.e DM.

Considering the last year’s test level, my suggestion on the scores for XLRI call is:

*** Last year, above mentioned marks would have fetched a call with good percentile, the cut off was much lower. However, to have a realistic chance of converting the call one must score 32+.

    I got oveall 94.23 percentile in XAT (80.86 in quant, 92.03 in English and VA and 89.83 in DM) . I got calls from all 3 programs (BM,HR,GMBA) from XLRI. But i am expecting a very low score in GK of 3.5 and I did ok in essay writing. Can I expect to convert to an admission with such a low GK score? How do I cover up for GK and essay writing during the interview? Please guide.

    • Sona, apologise for missing your query.
      GK score is not a problem, it can be covered up with a good interview. With a 65% weight for the XAT score BM might be difficult but the other two are possible for you.

    • Puja, At this score getting PMIR call would be difficult. MDI HR is also very good (MDI is CAT allied). TISS is other good option.

    According to the CL XAT-2015 Answer Key, my overall score is 28.
    Verbal – 9.00

    Quants and DI – 8.75

    What percentile can i expect? Will this be enough to get a call from XLRI for BM/HR? Is the answer key reliable because some answers do vary with the answers given on some other coaching websites!

      You have a chance of call from both programs of XL – HR and BM.

  16. For a couple of questions in XAT-2015 I put a dot in the middle of one oval on the OMR sheet, but fully darkened another oval when I realized my careless mistake. The dot that I marked carelessly is merely a pen-point and occupies much less than 30% of the total area of the oval. Do you know whether the OMR-machine will ignore the dot or consider it to be a case of double marking?

      • Nikhil, your XAT overall scores are fine but the sectionals could be an issue in XLRI. All other institutes should be on for you.

  26. Sir, I scored miserable in CAT 14, this was my 1st attempt. However before planning for 2015, I want to mention that I will have 5 yrs of work exp in 2015, August while joining Bschool. Mechanical engineer, general. I decided later to prepare for MBA, that’s why this issue arises. With this much of work exp is it good to go for regular mba? even if from IIM A, B or C? Will there be any adverse effect on placement? Need your suggestion before I fresh start!! I am keenly interested in doing regular MBA, from any of top 10 bschools. I am 25.

    What shall be the length of essay? If it matters at all? Can I keep it very short and point-wise?

    • Himanshu, Essay need not be very long, usually you will be get a space to write it. Essay does matter for XLRI (Only in Interview). 20 mins time is good enough and it is better if your write it paragraph wise rather than point wise.

    • Nihar, New IIMs are possible. Even FMS gave call at 87+ile last year, so u can expect that. However you will have to prepare very well for converting the calls. You have a slim chance from old IIMs. Apart from IIT B/D you can get call from others.

  33. Sir, I have taken a decent number of XAT Tests mostly previous year tests and am scoring DM – 10 QA – 14 VA – 7 , on an average. Any test taking tips I can follow to improve my sectional scores in VA. Thanks.

    • Yaswant, Score are decent. Just check how much time are u devoting in Quant to score 14 marks, if you are devoting more than 55 mins u can give the extra time in VA and may be you can aim to score few more in VA. However, all said and done u have to be comfortable with the strategy. I guess couple of marks more in VA will be handy.

    • Snehi, IIMs and IITs are difficult. IMT, IMI, KJ are possible. With your profile you should aim for top 20 colleges.

    • Karan, Please refer to the post Cutoffs of CAT allied institutes for information on the institute cutoffs.
      New IIMs and IITs are not possible.
      UBS has faced placement issues hence it has been put in a lower cluster. Sydenham is higher up due to its placement record. It is almost at par with NMIMS as it is significantly cheaper with almost the sme level of placements.

    • Ashu, You can expect calls from IMT, IMI Delhi, FORE, KJ Som, LBSIM (if you apply). You can also apply to MICA. At this score IIMs call cannot be expected. You can apply IIT Kanpur/Roorkee/Madras but chances are less.

  45. Sir, last year i gave CAT and got 79.74 %ile, but for me it was luck because i did only 23 questions but i think level of difficulty helped to get that %ile. This year i gave CAT again but got only 84.73 %ile OA and 95.56%ile in QADI and 43.69%ile in VALR. I completed my graduation(B.Sc.) in 2013. I have no job as my degree dosen’t provide it. Now i’m confused about preparing again or should i join any good college this year as many people loose focus when the gap after graduation increases. Please suggest me what should i do and if i decide do MBA this year, to which colleges should i apply.

    • Eshan, You can expect MDI and NITIE (PGDISEM)at this score. You can also expect IIT Roorkee/Kanpur/madras. For back up you can also think about IMI, IMT, KJ, Great Lakes, MFC.

    Also, please tell the expected score/%ile to get call from SPJAIN on the basis of XAT score..

    • Rohit, Leave that question. Last year there was one such question in which the options did not have the correct answer. SP Jain gives profile based call.

    I find XAT quants very difficult with maximum attempts of 5-6 questions only… I am scoring around 9+ in both verbal as well as DM… Also, I am not targeting XLRI & XIMB, as both these B-schools consider sectional as well as overall cutoff..Hence, I am looking forward to joining decent XAT allied institutes that consider only overall cutoff. I wanted to know what should be my target score and percentile so as to ensure that I get calls from these institutes… Sir, waiting for your valuable feedback… Thankyou.

    • Swati, You are doing good enough and with some more effort you can get 90%ile in XAT, as last year score of around 30 fetched 90%ile. I think if you can follow the strategy I have discussed and pick and choose the questions in Quant you can score 7-8 marks, practice DI. You should aim to score 30 (provided the level of paper is same as last year). You can consider GIM, XISS, LIBA apart from XLRI and XIMB. But I do feel you should aim for XLRI and XIMB.

      • Saket, Few years back XAT question paper used to had a clear instruction of progressive negative marking but last year there was no such instruction. However, a difficult exam like XAT demands more accuracy as you would be investing more time per question and if after doing so you commit a mistake it could be a spoilsport. So I suggest you to be sure of what you are marking.

    • Saket, Suggest you to solve previous year XAT papers and see how do you perform in English. Map your mistakes and try to understand the gap between your thought process and the correct answer. It is very difficult to comment on ideal attempts and also cut off varies each year, however, last year score of 37-38 fetched 99%ile.

    • Siddharth, You can expect NITIE and MDI and you should also look to join them. New IIMs are also possible at this score. IIT B and IIT D would be difficult, rest IITs you can expect.

    • Rishabh, hope you have applied to NITIE as you make it here. Similarly most of the IITs are also possible for you.
      If you make it to IIT (Mumbai, Delhi, Kgp), NITIE IM or to MFC then you can consider joining them else go for a retake.

        • Sravani, I think at this stage what you have done is sufficient. Suggest you to go through economics and business related GK if you can and if you dont find it is ok, Relax. GK anyways comes to the count later on and a score of 3-4 marks is sufficient. Suggest you to focus more on the main sections. For DM please solve past 5 years XAT paper.

  60. Good Morning GP sir, CAT has been a disaster for me. My Cat percentile is 84.9 with VA score between 65 and 70 and QA score more than 90. I’ve done Bcom. This was my last attempt. I’m from OBC category. Can you tell me what all colleges with reservation are possible for me as I will not be getting a reputed private B-School with this score. Will I get call from Delhi University courses – MFC, MBE, MBA IB and HR? I will not be taking CAT 15 so please provide suggestions?     • Himanshu, You have an outside chance of new IIMs. MICA is based on MICAT score and then the second round, so it is possible. IRMA if you have applied is also possible

      Suggest that you start your PDP classes immediately to ensure conversion of your calls.

    • Biswajeet, It is very difficult to comment on number of attempts as it depends a lot on accuracy. However 15-17 attempts in DM and EU with 80% accuracy and 10-12 attempts in QA with 80 accuracy shall be very good.

    • Aarav, MDI and NITIE are possible. You can expect calls from new IIMs although last year cut off was bit higher. JBIMS is not possible

    • Ashwani, DSM DTU is not the right place for someone with your profile. Suggest that you take GMAT and go for 1 year program of ISB or IIMs.

      FMS call is possible but converting it will be difficult.

    • Ravneet, you can get calls from IMI, IMT and MFC.
      NITIE PGDISEM is possible
      IIT Madras, Roorkee, and Kanpur are difficult but can happen.
      MFC is very good and you should join if you make it to the final list.
      Start PDP classes immediately to ensure that you are well prepared.

    • S. Sharma, based on CMAT you can apply to GIM, KJ Somaiyya and MICA
      Based on CAT only Welingkar is possible.
      84 marks in SNAP SIBM Pune and SCMHRD are ruled out. You could get calls from SIIB and SIBM Blr and calls are definite from other SNAP institutes.
      BIMTECH and NIBM Pune are decent back up options.

    • Vishal, new IIMs are all possible and also a chance of calls from Indore, Khozikode and Shillong.
      IIT Mumbai is unlikely, IIT Delhi is an outside chance and other IITs are all possible.

    • Aman, you will most probably get calls from all IIMs, so stop worrying and start your PDP classes immediately so that you are well prepared and are able to convert your calls. Graduation marks are not important and a good performance in the next stage will help you convert the calls.
      If it makes you feel better, FMS is almost confirmed final call.

    • Nisha, a 2 year gap can be explained in the interview but a retake preparation is not a full time occupation and you will soon start getting bored and will also put yourself under pressure. Suggest that you pick up a job and prepare simultaneously. Work experience will also be beneficial in the interviews.

    • Maaz, a very good MICAT will be needed by you to mover forward in MICA. A better option is to junk CAT and apply to MICA on the basis of Feb MAT.

  114. Hi Sir,

    I got my CAT results last week, I performed badly as per my expectation. I have gotten 98.05 %ile, (but last year being lesser prepared with lower performance, I had gotten 98.37%ile), this is a huge disappointment as I was expecting 99% + as per the CL %ile predictor as well as other %ile websites across the web. I have serious doubts on the evaluation of scores by CAT center (I wrote CAT on 22 Nov, slot 2 with 63 attempts and 90%+ accuracy).

    Being a General category student, from last year’s experience, I know my opportunities have dwindled greatly with this score. I am beginning to doubt the CAT center normalization and scoring as I was estimating 165 – 180 raw score at the least, which translated to 99%+ as per the predictors.

    What is your opinion on this, sir ? Have this year’s results been an aberration due to an overly easy paper, and are the percentile predictions before the exam, incorrect ?

    This is a very difficult juncture for me now since, I had a lot riding on my CAT score, it has increased pressure on me to perform in XAT now.

    • Deepak, PGDISEM is a sector specific course and has limited placement opportunities but is a good back up option. I don’t think NITIE has 85%ile as sectional cutoffs and most probably you will get a call from NITIE IM.

    • Sharan, Calls from older IIMs are unlikely at your score. The be B and I.
      MDI and SP Jain do not have reservations hence calls are not likely below 97%ile.
      NITIE and all IITs are possible for you but IIT B and D would be difficult.
      FMS interview call is possible but converting it will be difficult.

    • Padeep, your best bet are likely to be XIMB and IMT G. However, with a 4 year work experience it will be better to take GMAT and go for 1 year MBA from ISB Hyderabad or the top IIMs.

    • Siddharth, ABCL are unlikely but the others are possible. SP Jain, MDI, NITIE and IITs (except Mumbai) are all possible for you.

    Please tell me other then FMS, from where I can expect calls where should I apply ? I have filled most of the b school forms having deadline till cat result. Or Should I drop the idea of joining b school this year and do better in VA next time?

    • Rishabh, given your VA score you have missed out on a most of the IIM calls and ideally you should go for a retake.
      Apart from Ranchi you can get calls from a few IITs, MFC, MBE and NITIE.
      FMS conversion is unlikely below 95%ile for OBC candidates.

    1. What is the best possible college I can get with this?
    2. Is it worth going for such colleges or should i try again next year?
    3. My NMAT score is 209, if the same gets converted, should i take it as I have been receiving many bad comments about the college being not much educative but having great placements. Though, I have no idea on this subject.

    • Akash, you best colleges are likely to be MFC, XIMB, IMTG, IMI, etc.
      Given your acads you can consider going for a retake if you are unable to convert NM Mumbai or get a call from XLRI. LEt the decision of retake be deferred till XAT results are declared.
      Do pick up a job and prepare simultaneously in case you go for retqke.

      1. IITs are not likely below 96%ile. MBE, MFC, MIB and MHORD are all good options.
      2. Will post an article on cutoffs of institutes in a couple of days.
      3. NM Mumbai call is possible for you.

    Also, do tell me the score needed to get 99.8%ile+ in XAT.

    • Sayan, IIM B is still possible due to your acads. L, I, K, S, new IIMs, FMS and JBIMS are ll possible for you. Start your PDP classes immediately.

    Despite the low score, I do not want to give a retake. So, what all colleges can I expect a call from?
    Also, I received a profile based call from spjain. Is it of any relevance now as I have scored really low and it’s below 80 percentile in VA? Please help.

    • Divya, CAT score is not important in case of SP Jain and it is your performance in the next stage that is important for conversion. The sectional cutoff for SP Jain is 70%ile so you are eligible.
      Please start PDP classes immediately as this is your best chance.

    • Krish, ideally you should pick up a job and go for a retake, but if you have to go for Amity restrict yourself to only its flagship MBA program. Do take For this year you should take CMAT and MAT in Feb and apply to Mumbai University colleges through DTE. You should also take Maharashtra CET as they will consider higher score out of MAT and CET. A few good colleges are possible through CMAT also.

    3. My first priority for specialisation is finance. As NITIE is famous for ops only, will it be worthy to join in case i convert its call ?

    • Nishant, IIT Mumbai and Delhi are not possible but the others are and you should apply to them. Calls should happen from SP Jain, MDI and NITIE also.
      You should also apply to JBIMS for MMS as well as MSc Finance.
      SP Jain does not consider GK and Essay.
      For Finance NITIE is not recommended.

    I have a profile score from SPJ.
    I have barely managed to clear the required cut-offs for it (OA 86 and both sectionals over 70).
    I have 2 questions:-
    1)How much weightage does SPJ give to CAT scores and what could be my chances provided I do well in interviews?

    • anon, while A and C are not possible, B too is difficult but all other IIMs, FMS, MDI, NITIE and almost all IITs are possible for you.

    • Vipul, new IIMs, IITs and NITIE are unlikely at 83%ile but you can get a calls from FORE and IIFM. Both are good colleges and should be considered favourably.

          • Vipul, NITIE could happen. If you do not get a good school this year then pick up a job and go for a retake since a 90%ile will give you good institutes.

    • Nikhil, thanks for appreciating our efforts. However the accuracy of Percentile Predictor is a function of the accuracy of your estimated correct answers.
      1. IIMC is unlikely as it typically requires over 99.5%ile for a call.
      2. You should apply to JBIMS, IIT B and D also. IIT D will be your back up.
      3. At zero attempts my scores are QADI 15.13%ile, VALR 5.27%ile and Overall 3.46%ile

        and sir what is the cutoff for oms students in JBIMS? I have heard that the admission process will be solely done by the institute itself and not by DTE Maharashtra. So will they change the criteria like reducing the maharashtra student quota?

    • Shivangi, the only decent college that you can consider through MAT is MICA. You can also look at the flagship MBA program of Amity.

    • Raman, this is possibly due to pressure of performance. Relax a bit, do not pressurise yourself and you will get improve in Quant.

  170. Sir does ximb considers the score of essay and gk as they take the scores of CAT also so to maintain parity shouldn’t they be considering only Xat scores???
