SSC (CGL) Re-examination 2013, Comprehensive Analysis (Slot-1 and 2)

Staff Selection Commission successfully conducted the 1st phase of the re-examination for the CGL 2013 candidates on April 27, 2014.

Unlike the last time, the test was conducted on the same day in 2 slots (Morning and Afternoon), with 2 different papers and 8 sets in each slot. The number of sections, question types and the difficulty level broadly remained the same across all test papers.

The pattern of the test was as follows:

General Intelligence and Reasoning
In this section, questions were from an array of topics and most of them had easy to moderate level of difficulty. A student could have easily attempted over 35 questions in 40 minutes.

All the question types have been covered in the CL study material and CL students would have found the section easy.

General Awareness
This was the toughest section to crack and an attempt of 13 -15 questions with a high level of accuracy would be considered to be a good. This section was dominated by questions from static G.K.

Quantitative Aptitude
The section comprised questions from a variety of topics. Majority of the questions were from Arithmetic, Algebra and Trigonometry. While Arithmetic questions were easy to attempt, one had to know smart techniques and shortcuts in order to solve Algebra questions efficiently. In Data Interpretation, questions were based on simple calculation.

A couple of questions in this section were seemingly incorrect, the details of which have been provided in the answer key.

English Comprehension
The section was dominated by Grammar and Vocabulary questions. In Vocabulary, there were questions on Antonyms, Synonyms, One word for many, Idioms and Fill in the Blanks. In Grammar, there were questions of Sentence Correction, Spot the Error and Fill in the Blanks.
There were 2 Reading Comprehension Passages with 5 questions each.

In afternoon session (slot 2) paper, some questions had typographical errors, which could have led to confusion while answering the section.

  1. Sir,
    I am getting 110 (on an average) in previous years parers for ssc tier 1. I m in general category what are my chances to clear cutoff for tier 1, about to appear in tier 1 for ssc CGL 2015 on this month’s 9.
    Also please advice about chances for getting top posts too.

      Thanks for sending in the query, as per this year’s actual SSC -CGL -2015 Preliminary paper , our estimate is that the General Category cut off would be something about 96+ so looking at your performance , I feel that you should get through for sure if you have performed in the same manner in the actual paper as in PYPs.

    • Dear Rajiv , Despite the fact that you are from OBC category, please note that the expected cut off is around 398 (out of 600) for OBC ,hence you need to score around 300 marks to get the final selection.Only Hard work can see you through.

      Ideally, you should target around 270 and upwards in Tier II in order to be very confident of securing your desired post.

  4. HELLO SIR….i am a student who is going to appear for 2013 SSC CGL tier II this September…and i got 107 marks in tier I .Sir may i know the highest mark in tier I exam….

      It is expected that about 5 to 6 students may have scored 150 + in Tier I. It is also estimated that many students may have scored in the range of 130 to 135.

      CGL immediately offers a job to you (very respectable jobs, with decent pay packages). MBA, if done from a good b-school, will offer more lucrative jobs and better growth opportunities but will require that you invest two years of your time and effort (in studying) and a good amount of money (for fees). Also note that even if you take up a job through CGL, after working for a few years, you may still opt for an MBA. These are the features of MBA and CGL – which of these is better will be an individual choice. You need to decide which of these appeals more to you.

    In view of the above official news, CAN I CHANGE MY PREFENCE from Non-interview post which i choose to Interview post? Plz reply.

    • Dear David,

      It is believed that candidates can fill new State and Post preference at the time of Document Verification. It would be best to contact SSC and seek their clarification.

    This is Avinash Gaurav, working in an IT company as BDM after BE.
    I have attempted tier 1 of SSC CGL 2013 re exam. I’m in OBC category and getting 97 and 98 as per two answer sheets published by anonymous sources on web, and 99 as per my analysis.
    My first choice is IB.
    Q1: Do I stand a chance to clear the tier 1?
    Q2: As I have heard that candidate turn around for the re exam was lesser than that in CGL 2013, does it decrease the competition to some extent?
    Q2: How much should I target in tier 2 in order to get the desired post in IB as I’ve only 97-99 in tier 1 (I’m above average in English and average in maths- considering both accuracy and timing)?
    Q4: What is the highest that someone has ever scored in SSC CGL tier 2 ?

    Kindly help me with the information requested above.
    Need your kind guidance on how to get IB when my score is just 97 as for now?

    • Dear Avinash,

      SSC CGL Tier I 2013 re-exam results are already out. At the marks that you have mentioned, you must have cleared Tier I. Congratulations! You should target around 260 + in Tier 2 in order to get your desired post.

    1.I wrote cgl 2013 re-exam nd will get around 97.25,is there any chance of qualifying.
    2. I’ve 4yrs of IT experience, I left the job prepared and wrote the Engineering Service exam, unsure of my selection, will I join the new job or prepare again?..

    • Dear Sharath,

      You have a fair chance of qualifying. If you are selected for a job, it will be advisable that you accept that job and do not waste that opportunity. After this, you can continue with your preparations and seek better opportunities.

    • Dear Rajesh,

      Yes, you have very good chances in Tier II. Focus on your preparations and ensure that you do your best in Tier II. Do not concern yourself too much with jobs/transfers at this stage.

    I wrote SSC CGL 2013 re-exam on 20th july 2014… roughly m getting 108.75 but my concern is in the answer key 3 questions which i attempted correctly are found to be wrong according to the answer key… if they are rectified i wud get 112.50 in tier 1 … 1 incorrect was in reasoning 1 in GK and 1 in maths,.. and english m not sure bcoz of obvious reasons… i just wanna know are they taken care of or do i have to be satisfied with 108.75 ?? awaiting some intellect response…

  11. Sir, my aim is civil services. My cat percentile last year was 98.9. This year i feel tempted to go for one of the iims. Should i go for iim and think of civil services later on, or should i take ssc cgl as a back up and prepare for civil services? Please advise. Also, throw some light on the top posts of ssc cgl versus rbi grade b officer.

    • Kamal, this is a difficult one and my suggestion is that between SSC and MBA go for the one that will be happy continuing with in case you are not successful in Civils.

  12. sir, if someone has filled non-interview posts before interview posts in preference order and secures par marks for higher posts will he be eligible to join interview posts or as his preference order ?

    2: can any one reappear in ssc cgl by being in the service previously passing through the same ssc-cgl exam ?will he be allowed to join interview posts (like switch over the posts)

    • Dev,
      Services through SSC are allotted as per your preference order. Suppose you sore maximum and top the merit list, you will be allotted the the post which you have filled on preference no. 1 and so on.

      2. Yes, you can appear in CGL exams irrespective of the fact that you are selected already. For example, many candidate re appear in CGL test just to improve their rank so that they can choose their region/zone as per their convenience.

    I am going to appear for CGL 13 re-examination on the 20th of july 2014. and i have the following queries:
    1.) My order of preferance is Assistant CSS, Assistant MEA (cypher), Assistant CVC, Railway,IB, UDC and other departments. I would like to know is there any skill test for Assistants in MEA and the above mentioned post… similar to the one which is conducted for Tax Assistants OR only the marks of tier 1,2 and interview are taken into account ?
    2.) What is the usual cut-off for these posts?
    3.) I am actually aspiring for civil services. I had appeared for the examination(2013) last year and qualified the prelims but could not qualify the mains. I wish to appear for Indian foreign services this year but few people told me that MEA cypher is similar to it…as in the work and postings. Is it so? please help.

    • Ankita,
      1)The posts marked by you in your preference order do not require any kind of computer proficiency test like the one required by other assistants. So only the total marks of your tier I, tier II and interview will be taken into account for final selection.

      2) Cutoffs for various posts are
      Assistant CSS 382.25
      Assistant MEA(cypher) 444
      Assistant CVC 512(last time only for OBC)
      Railway 453
      IB 447.25

      But you must keep one thing in mind that these cut off scores keep on varying depending on the number of students applying and the difficulty of the paper.

      3) More so, if you took the CSE (Pre) Examination, 2013; you must know that there is no separate test for IFS only. Posts for IFS are filled through Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC itself. And its not totally true that Minister of External Affairs (Cypher) is similar to IFS. IFA is Group A Post recruited through Civil Services Examination.

    • Anirudh, you have a very good chance of making it to the next stage. Hope you have started preparing for Tier II.

    • Kenneth, it is difficult but not ruled out. It is a function of the number of students above you who drop out.

    I have filled SSC CGL 2014 form ,waiting for the exam date. Currently working in an IT firm, I have an experience of 3 years. I want to swtich from private sector to govt sector and I believe that SSC is a good opportunity. Can you please tell me the marks (tier 1+ tier 2+ tier 3) required to get into top departments in SSC. Also I have heard that you need to have a good jack to get into SSC ,is it true.

    • Priya, a score of 500 out of 700 (tier 1 + 2 + Interview) will ensure a selection to top departments.
      A “jack” is not required, you can get through on merit.

      In SSC CGL Exam out of 700 marks (combined of tier 1 + tier 2 + tier 3/Interview) you have to score around 500-515 marks for top and preferred posts. It is not true that you must have a good jack. Just concentrate on your studies.

    • Abhinandan,
      If you do not qualify the test paper of statistics or in case you do not clear this paper with minimum required marks, still you are eligible for other posts filled by you according to your preferences.

  21. Sir, I am a B.Tech. Fresher. I am planning to give Cat again this year. But i wanted to ask that i do not have a job in my core field.. I am planning to teach aptitude in a coaching institute for 2-3 months. After that i plan to prepare for the MBA entrance exams at home. I wanted to know that is this kind of a work experience relevant for an MBA?? or do they require the same TCS Infosys kind of jobs.. please consider both… admission in a bschool as well as placement thereafter. Plz help

    • Avni, teaching is acceptable work experience however it will be useful to get involved in other areas of running the institute like counseling, sales, operations etc as it will show a person who is interested in all aspects of business.

    I have converted SIOM-Nasik.
    I am a fresher mechanical engineer and also got a job offer(core field) with ctc 2.75. Should i consider MBA this year, job or should go on for one more attempt…please advice.

    • Ankur, SIOM is a good institute but will restrict you to operations and if you are comfortable with it you should join SIOM.
      What were your CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP scores and your marks in X, XII and Graduation?

    I have converted nirma and tapmi (only bkfs). I would like to know which one is better with respect to placements, reputation etc as tapmi bkfs is a new course which is starting this year.

    • Rushil, there is a big gap between NIRMA and TAPMI and hence despite BKFS being a new course I think you should go for TAPMI. My expectation is that BKFS should have a placement similar to that of PGDM.

  25. hello sir, need a genuine advice frm u. I need 2 choose bw ifmr and nibm. I am a fresher and commerce graduate. Actually i m interested in nibm cz of its comparatively low fees and d RBI tag. And ifmr has higher fees and avg package is also low 4 freshers. Bt people say that ifmr offers various profiles. I dnt knw what 2 do. I dnt want loan burden for a long period of time. Plz advice me which 1 to choose.

    • Debasis, NIBM is a good institute and you can consider joining it over IFMR essentially due to lower fee and smaller batch size. Placements are similar in both.

    I have 46 months of experience in IT service company..This yer I have converted DOMS IIT Madras and XIMB BM.

    Confused between these two…Am concerned about Increaded intake in XIMB (180 in 2012-2014 ->240 in 2013-2015-> 360 in 2014-2016) and 15 Lac fee .

    • Sateesh, while XIMB BM is ranked higher than IIT Madras, the gap is not much and given the fee differential you can choose to join IIT.

    I have a very common but an equally important question here. I’m about to get passed out from IIT-Delhi. I haven’t gone through the placement process and thus, don’t have a job. I belong to SC category, having 90+ percentage in both 10th and 12th (CBSE) grade. Now that I don’t have a job at the moment, is it a smart option that I should go for giving CAT this year while preparing for the same at home, given the condition that I have a BTech CGPA of 5.5 ?
    Can I expect calls from the major IIMs as I’m sure of getting a 92+ percentile in CAT this year?

    • Sanjay, despite your excellent X & XII marks and your category graduation CGPA of 5.5 could be a barrier to IIM A and B but all other IIMs should not be a problem. At 92%ile you have a good chance of calls from most of the IIMs but given your graduation CGPA suggest that you target 95%ile to ensure a call from the top IIMs also.
      It will be helpful if you could pick up a job which will act as a back up for you.

      • And sir, even if I get a call from one of the main three IIMs, would my not being a job guy be a big negative and affect my chances of going further through the interview process? And are the same policies applied to FMS and MDI too?

    My query is can i expect a single IIM convert this year ?
    or should i make a backup plan with these institutes?
    i am considering UBS karjat mumbai and edi ahmedabad
    if so how good are these colleges in placement, brand and ROI

    • Bharat, with an excellent WAT and a decent Interview you can be hopeful of a call from the new IIMs but if you unfortunately do not convert then my suggestion is to pick up a job and go for a retake of CAT. A slight improvement in your CAT score will get you interview calls from a few more IIMs and 1 year of work experience will not only be helpful in getting interview calls but also will help in improving you interview performance. The institutes that you are planning as a back up are below average and are unlikely to provide any decent placements.

    • Rohit, IMT Nagpur has decem=nt placement in finance with an average salary in the region of Rs 6 – 6.5 lakh pa.

    • Vishwajeet, IIFT Kolkata is a very good institute but is rated lower than the Delhi campus despite a common placement process but to my mind the gap is not much and and you should join. IIM ABM, as the name suggests is a specialised program and unless you should join are keen on this area.
