    • Supriyo, a good classroom programme helps you with better preparation which is not possible for self study. In order to secure good percentile it is always recommended to join classroom program because you get access lot of study material otherwise which is not possible. The practical methods of teaching help an aspirant to grab strong hold on concept. Availability of doubt sessions is another advantage of classroom programme.

      if you feel you can not take classroom sessions, then you can also enroll for CL’s Night Class that will help you to prepare for CAT at your own likelihood.

    • Lucky, with 3 years of work ex. you should ideally be looking at better institutes. If you wish to pursue HR you should aim for TISS and XLRI.

    • Pushkar, KJ Somaiya will not happen at this percentile. If you have 2 years work ex then I suggest you to continue working and take CAT again next year.

    • Harshita, if this was not your first attempt, then you should be looking at CAT’16. Meanwhile you can take a job and study for CAT. You can score better percentile the next time.

    • RIturaj, since you have a good amount of work ex. only Great Lakes makes sense. Ideally, you should be going for another attempt of CAT this year and aim for better colleges.

  22. Why is the overall cutoff higher than the average of the sectional cutoffs? Does one need to clear the overall cutoff as well as the individual sectional cutoffs? Or is it okay if someone has cleared the overall cutoff but couldn’t clear one section or vice versa?

  23. Sir. I have applied for xat,cat and xgmat. I am from odisha and have domicile for the same.what percentile score, sectional cutoff and marks and other criteria to fit in ximb bm. more than that i am from hotel management with no job experience. I had 6 month industrial training will this add up to my profile?

    • Bibek, There is no specific benefit that is available to candidates from Hotel Management background. However most of the non-engineering candidates have an advantage of adding diversity and hence find it easier to clear the interview. Industrial training is not considered as work experience as it is part of your graduation program.
      The overall cutoff for XIMB BM is usually around 92-93%ile and the sectional cutoff would be around 80%ile.

    • Sherlock, if the score is below 50% in calss 10th 12th or graduation , you might not be eligible for some B-schools. Please check the eligibilty criteria of each and every B-school before applying.

    • Nikita, go for a retake of CAT/XAT and also take GMAT for ISB. It is unlikely that IMT Nagpur and Welingkar will increase your salary.

    • Rohit, the application window for most of the isntitutes is over but with 77%ile in CAT you can try for KJ Somaiyya and IIFM Bhopal.

    Hope you are fine.Need your expert advice to decide my future career.
    I have 50 months of IT experience in a MNC with a salary of 7.5 lpa.I had applied for XAT and have scored an OA-85.78 percentile and have been shortlisted for XIMB HRM as I am much inclined towards HRM that will suit my skills.
    However considering the avg salary at campus recruitments at XIMB,I am really confused if I would proceed with pursuing MBA at XIMB.
    Please suggest if going ahead with the MBA will be a good decision

    • CD, given your current salary and the fee of XIMB it may not be worthwhile for you to go for this program. Also given your 50 month work experience ISB Hyderabad and PGPX of top IIMs (through GMAT) is likely to be a better option.

    • ak, unfortunately no decent college is possible at your score.
      IBS Hyderabad is a decent back up option – it has a high fee, big batch size but if you are among the top 250 (out of 800) students then decent placements are possible

    • Varang, GK will not be a big issue for these institutes and you can make it to the final list. However it will be helpful to brush up your current affairs.

    I have scored 90.xx OA in XAT and therefore qualify the cutoff for both IMT -G and XIMB -HRM. Which institute do u think is better in terms of placements?
    Scondly, I have a CAT %ile of 88.7 OA and an index score of 89 for MFC. Do I stand a chance of getting shortlisted?

    • Nikita, based on placements IMT G would be a better option over XIMB HR.
      MFC is unlikely at a CAT score of 88.7 but MBE is possible.

    • Kumar, TAPMI should be preferred over the other two due to its better placement and reputation/ranking. GIM is the next best option.

    • Sourav, the two are very close and you can choose either of them. XIMB is a better name with lower fee but you should be comfortable with RM. IBS Hyderabad on the other hand has not only a higher fee but also a bigger batch size but offers a general management program that allows you to choose your area of specialisation. If you do not have any preference of specialisation then go for XIMB RM.

    • Pooja, TAPMI is a good institute and should be preferred over KJ Somaiya. However if the high fee of TAPMI is an issue then you can consider KJ Somaiya.

    After today’s XL results I have 1 major query- SPJIMR-IM vs XL-HRM.
    I have not been selected in XL- BM and have just been selected in XL-HRM.

    My points are :
    1. Not so keen for HRM Course as my interest doesn’t lie there.
    2. Already have 3 yr+ of analytics experience.So if I do HRM ,this course will not properly connect with my previous analytics experience nor will it properly connect with my future goal.

    So my doubt/questions are:

    1. What should I chose? I am in a big dilemma because of the above mentioned listed points.
    2. What type of profiles are offered to HRM students? What type of non-HRM electives are on offer? Since my goal is further pursue consulting role, also plz shed light on how much percent placements of HRM are in consulting role.

    • Abhi, XLRI HRM makes sense only if you want to specialise in this area else SP Jain is the right choice. My suggestion is to go for SP Jain since it IM appears to be your area of interest and will allow you to leverage on your experience.

    I have converted XIM Bhubaneswar’s 2 year MBA program but am confused as to whether should I join it or try for something else next year.
    The reason for the dilemma is the increased seats (300 this year) and increased fees (13 lakhs) of XIMB this year.
    I have a work exp of 39 months in Engineering sector.
    My acads are as below:
    Xth – 89.4%
    XIIth – 86%
    BE – 73% (Jadavpur University).
    Kindly suggest.

    • Abhilash, XIMB is a good institute and while the fee and batch size appear to be high these are normal for most MBA institutes. Actually both are low as compared to most of the comparable institutes. The only reason of not joining XIMB can be to take GMAT and go for ISB Hyderabad. To my mind this was your last attempt for a 2 year program.

      I need your advice. Which programme should I prefer and why?

      XIMB (BM) or IIM Indore (Mumbai Campus)

      I have finalised only on these two institutes. Everything supports XIMB as it is an established institute, will provide me a ‘Marketing’ specialisation, and is the flagship course of the institute. However, I seem to be blinded by the IIM tag. Plus is only a new course and does not even have a campus.

      Please help me with your detailed advice.

      • ab, at present XIMB should be preferred to IIM Indore Mumbai campus. While the IIM tag is an asset the institute will take time to establish itself.

    I want to take your opinion on a dilemma I am facing – XLRI vs SP Jain,Mumbai
    I believe you are the best person to ask this and I want to know your thought process and reasoning vs mine.
    As per my current understanding/research, it is SP Jain,Mumbai > XLRI-BM >XLRI- HRM
    Adv of SPJ over XLRI in my opinion:
    1. Rural internship in SPJ- 2 months
    2. DOCC project IN SPJ
    3. Mandatory international immersion (which is being started this year,a big plus which is not there in XL)
    4. Option of international exchange
    5. Higher gender and intake diversity
    6. Similar placements as in XLRI
    7. Mumbai location vs Jamshedpur location
    Now my doubt is that all rankings say that XLRI is better than SPJ. Why?
    I understand that XL’s HRM is amongst the best but personally I am not much interested in it.
    Also I was able to find my plus of SPJ over XLRI but I wasn’t able to find many adv of XL over SPJ apart from rankings in various magazines.
    I hope I am right in all the above 7 listed points .Correct me if any of the above features of SPJ are there in XL as well, will be glad to know.
    Please let me know your thoughts- your opinion will be critical as generally people choose XL over SPJ

    • Dear Abhi,

      As you have yourself pointed out, XLRI is ranked higher than SPJIMR in every decent ranking. XLRI has a much better reputation than SPJIMR and hence, you should opt for XLRI. Do not get caught up in the glamour of gender diversity and Mumbai. The points that you have mentioned are correct but do not necessarily add much value to the institute or to its program. Opt for XLRI straight away.

      • I understand that you mean that XLRI-BM should be chosen over SP Jain.
        What about XLRI-HRM vs SPJ?
        I am not much interested in HR .

        • Abhi, XLRI BM and HR both should be chosen over SP Jain. The only other MBA institute that is at par or better for HR over XLRI is TISS.

    • Abhi, what you have written is correct, on almost all the parameters listed above SP Jain scores over XLRI but possibly due to its age and its alumni base in the industry XLRI is considered at par with the top IIMs while SP Jain would be ranked around 10-15. JBIMS is a similar case wherein based on almost all parameters it should be not among the top 20 but its placement, age, alumni base and low fee push it to top 10.
      Reputation of an academic institute is built over years and it also takes years for it to go down. As of now my suggestion is to choose XLRI over SP Jain.

    • Dear Rishu,

      Between these two institutes, BIM Tech is preferable. However, average placement figures at both these institutes are in the range of Rs. 6 lakhs per annum. In light of this, you need to consider your current profile (including earning potential) and then judge whether these institutes can add value to you.

    • Vishal, ISBM is avoidable. Go for Welingkar hopefully you will make it.
      Go for a retake only if you are confident of increasing your CAT/XAT score to atleast 90%ile. Also do pick up a job, retake preparation is not a full time occupation.

    I have got the admission offer from Great Lakes, Chennai for PGPM 1 year program. My wait list number in SIBM-Pune is 96 and SCMHRD is 14. Please suggest me what should I do. I currently have 2.5 years of experience in IT.

    • Gaurav, This is a difficult one. You will convert both the calls – SIBM Pune and SCMHRD and my suggestion is to go for SIBM Pune over Great Lakes Chennai PGPM as it is a better known and older institute with better placement opportunities.

  52. How would you rate Great Lakes Gurgaon PGPM. I could not convert Chennai but do have a call from Gurgaon. Is there a major difference between the two/ Please advice

    • Piyush, GL Gurgaon PGPM is not as good as Chennai in terms of placements but can be considered as a back up option. Its average salary will be in the region of 8.5 lakh pa.

    • Shiva, while there are rules that can be applied, for me DM is a combination of RC and Common sense.
      CL does not offer a separate XAT test series, will plan for it closer to the test. However you can enroll for CAT TS + Non-CAT TS which includes Mocks for all MBA entrances.

    • Arjun, a good performance in personality assessment process (GD + Interview) can ensure a conversion of the interview call. Ignore your marks and focus on your preparation.

    • Sarat, try converting the call from IMT first. If you are dedicated to Operations only, the best options would be NITIE or IIT-Bombay.

    • simmi, go for a retake, you will not get any decent college at 81%ile. However take GMAT also so that ISB Hyderabad is also possible.

    • Saurabh, the only GL program worth joining is its 1 year program in Chennai but it has a work experience requirement of over 2 years. My suggestion is to go for a retake of CAT/XAT, if you can increase your VALR score to over 90%ile then good institutes are possible.

    • Narendra, this can’t be said precisely that this year the same will happen or not. You’ll have to wait for the official shortlist to come out.

    • Avinash, my preference will be Welingkar Mumbai over thee others due to its location, but except for GL PGDM all others are at par and one should decide only after getting the final calls.

    • Dibu, start reading current affairs online or by referring to a news-daily and a couple of weekly magazines like India Today. For static GA you can refer to any year-book. You should prepare for questions related to your academic background as well as work-profile.

What are the chances of getting calls? Also, are there any good colleges apart from these where sectionals are not considered? And how is IMT Nagpur,dubai and hyd?

    • Anoop, you expect calls from most of these colleges. IMT-Nagpur, Dubai and Hyderabad are ranked below the Ghaziabad campus.

    • Balbhadra, you can be sure of getting a call from XIMB. To join CL’s PDP course you should call your nearest CL centre and get yourself registered.

    • Anirudh, if you perform exceptionally well in the GD and PI, you do have chances of converting the call. The application time for most of the decent institutes is over by now. You can apply for TAPMI though.

  107. OA-98.5 VA-76.71..can anyone tell what was the approx percentage to clear 80 percentage cut off in VA..Mine was 33.04 % that translates to 9.25/28. Even TIME/TestFunda/CL predicted cutoff for VA to be around 7-8 marks out of 28. Was really hoping to get through 🙁

    • Priyanka, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be getting any calls due to low QA score. Yes, LIBA has sectional cut-offs.

    • Bharat, last year the cut-off in VA for XIMB was 78 percentile. You are a borderline case. Keep you hopes and wait for the official calls.

  118. I had registered for PDP+einterviews for 1499 Reg No. 9764027, and NONE of the things shown in the package are showing up. When I call the support they say they cannot help. No replies even to my emails (sent4-5 emails). There is no link for registering for ongoing Bootcamps and when I tried registering for offline on center nearby they said requisite is IIM call. This is NOT mentioned in the package! links for SIC, videos, nothing promised in package are showing on my SIS….If I had time I would definitely write to consumer forum and demand my money back and time waste.

    • Shalu, please refer to the table at the top to get an idea where should you be applying at your score. GL-PGPM Chennai is a decent programme but avoid the Gurgaon campus.

    • Kunal, if they declare cut-off to be 65, then even 64.99 will not be considered. But you should wait for the official cut-offs to be released. You do have chances for the call.

    • Ak, you are on the borderline for IMT-G. Yes, MICA does consider the scores of XAT. As far as IITs and NITs are concerned, they consider the scores of CAT.

    • Vini, please refer to the table at the top to know the colleges you can aim for at that score. Since you have missed all the decent colleges, it would be advisable for you to write Maharastra-CET.

    The xat score predicted by CL predictor is 100% accurate in my case which is 23.5.But the %ile predicted by CL was 87 and my actual %ile is 84.67 which is a bit of setback for me…Sir,, will XIMB-hrm be possible at this score.And if not wat r the other possible options ??

    • Prashant, it’ll be very difficult to make a precise comment on that. You are the borderline case for the colleges with 90 percentile cut-off. Just wait for a few days for the official calls to roll out.

      • Sir, GIM & LIBA both have had sectional cut-offs last year. You haven’t mentioned that in this list. What is it expected to be this year?

        • Rohan, LIBA has slightly higher cut-offs than GIM last year. LIBA has sectional cut-offs but they are usually not very high. The same goes for GIM. The sectional cut-offs have little significance hence we have not counted them as a major factor. Furthermore, these institutes don’t declare their sectional cut-offs. We can only estimate them. For the actual cut-offs we’ll have to wait for the official calls this year.

    • Raghu, your low score in DM will play a spoil-sport everywhere. XL and XIMB are most certainly out of the scene. You have already applied to TAPMI and GIM so wait for their official calls. You can take you chances at Great Lakes as it doesn’t have sectional cut-offs and GL-PGPM programme is a decent one.

    • Harshvardhan, these are estimates and the actual cut offs could be lower. You can try for the institutes that have a cutoff around 80%ile.

    • tushar, you can consider GL Chennai 1 year program but my suggestion will be to take GMAT and go for 1 year MBA from the IIMs or ISB Hyderabad or top institutes outside India.

    • Govind, call from NM Mumbai is likely. Many students with low NMAT score convert their call while those with high score do not since the personality assessment process has a very high weightage.

  146. Ashish, all these calls are likely so you should start your PDP classes immediately.
    IMT G is indifferent to the test your take and treats both CAT and XAT similarly. Yes conversion is likely with a good GDPI.
    KJ Som is not accepting XAT score, it was my error. Apologise for the same.

    How good is the HRM Program in XIMB?

    My overall is 96.34 with 83.54 in QA, 97.63 in EL&LR and 84.37 in DM. I’m only interested in HR as a discipline, and haven’t applied to a lot many colleges (only XIMB, IMT G and TISS apart from XLRI, of course).

    In an event that I do not get a call from XLRI, or am not able to convert it after getting a call, is XIMB a good back-up school?

    Didn’t get calls from Symbiosis University.

    • Anudratta, with your XAT score calls are likely from all the XAT institutes that you have applied to. Even if XL BM does not happen XL HR should.
      XIMB HR is a good program and should be your back up option in case XL HR or TISS do not happen.
      Hopefully the XL, XIMB, IMTG and TISS will compensate for the lack of call from Symbiosis.
