XAT 2013 Exam Analysis

The test was divided into two parts. Part A was the usual XAT paper that would be evaluated for the percentile calculation. Part B would be evaluated at the discretion of the college that a student would apply to for the second stage of selection.

Part A

The test was not less challenging than the previous years. There were 91 questions in the paper and unlike past few years, XAT did not have differential marking. Hence, these 91 questions were worth 91 marks. Each question had 5 options. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question. Despite the increase in time, the average number of attempts is not likely to increase as compared to last year.

The Verbal and Logical Ability Section was not easier than last year but was different in quite a few ways. Most importantly, vocabulary questions (that have been a consistent feature in XAT) were missing this year. Instead, the test saw a few questions on articles that were very easy and could have been attempted by all. Also, the ever-feared Critical Reasoning questions were very few in number and came in a new avatar. There were only three questions of this kind but they were tough and could have been avoided. In Critical Reasoning, question based on strengthening, weakening and assumptions were also almost missing. There were two passages of approximately 300-350 words each. These, although not easy, could have been attempted. The next two passages were of about 600-650 words each. These were difficult and one had to carefully select questions that one wanted to attempt. Para-jumbles came as a relief for the test takers as all the three questions of this kind were doable. The test also saw three questions of grammar, two of which could have easily been attempted.

The section of Decision Making distressed a few as the level of difficulty rose up by a few notches. The section, although named ‘DM’, did have 8 questions of Analytical Reasoning that were extremely tough (two questions out of eight were incorrect) and the wisest course of action for a test taker would have been to leave these questions in favor of the Decision Making questions. Even then, this decision to leave AR completely will cost one at least 10 minutes.  There were seventeen questions on Decision making which could be categorized into two distinct categories- Easy and Tough. There were eight questions that were easy and could have been done easily by everyone. An interesting thing to note is that the Decision Making questions were fabricated out of the real life situations like Anna Hazare movement and 2G Spectrum case.

The section of Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation may have given a few test takers a reason to smile as the level of difficulty went down. As compared to last year, this section may have allowed greater number of attempts. One could have attempted around 15 questions in 50-55 minutes by a careful selection of questions. One could have done well in this section by focusing on questions from Arithmetic. The questions on Data Interpretation were quite a few and almost all of them were tough. Two questions in this section were incorrect and one question could be attempted only by looking at the answer choices and by approximation. XAT conducting bodies might want to proof read the test a little better next time as a question had a remark “is it a repeat” written at the end of it.

Part B

This part of the test consisted of General Awareness questions and Essay. There were 30 questions in General Awareness section. These were of moderate level of difficulty and the 15-16 questions could have been attempted easily. The focus of the section was towards Business and Economy. The topic given for the essay was ‘Corruption is the root cause of economic slowdown in India’. As was there in Decision Making, the topic of the essay was also from an area much talked about in 2012.

    • PB, XLRI shortlists candidates on the basis of XAT score only so your past acads will not matter and your sports certificates will be helpful in the interview. The XAT cutoff for XLRI is 95%ile but one should target 97-98%ile.

    • Biswa, calls are possible from all programs of XIMB at a score of over 24.75. At 24, HR and RM calls are possible.
      You should also get calls from IMT, GIM and TAPMI.

    • Kapil, GK score will not be used for percentile calculation. Please refer to the FAQs in the XAT website.
      XLRI was the only institute that considered the GK scores while giving the final calls. This year too the other institutes are unlikely to consider GK scores for either shortlisting for interviews or for final admission.

    • Prashant, XLRI/XIMB give calls on the basis of XAT score and do not factor in the X/XII/Grad scores. A a score of 32+ is usually a sure shot interview call from XLRI/XIMB.

    • Sushil, for XL BM/XIMB the cutoff is at least 95%ile (around 30-32 marks) and for HRM/GIM it is around 92%ile or 27-28 marks. 37 marks in IIFT is likely to be short of the required score for a call from Delhi/Kolkata.

  20. Sir pl tel me how to prepare for verbal ability section in the last 40 days. how should i prepare for vocab? Critical reasoning. RC. How much correct question I need to solve to get call form XLRI, XIMB?

    • Vishal, Take a past XAT paper and you will discover that XAT = CAT + DM. So for QA, EU, RC continue with what you did for CAT. GK and Essay are the other two items in this paper. Typically a score of 30+ is sufficient to get a call from XLRI and XIMB but your target should be over 35 marks.

    • With only about a month left for the exam, it would help if you solve as many previous years’ papers as possible to get a feel of the questions that are asked in XAT. Mocks, needless to say, should be taken very seriously and must be analysed carefully. As for practicing critical reasoning, LSAT and GMAT questions are a good resource. XAT is more about having a strong hold of logic than plain vocabulary. So make sure you not just know the meaning of the word literally but also contextually.

      XAT is all about accuracy and is typically a low-scoring paper. You need to score at least 35%-40% of the marks assigned to each section to clear the cut-offs. That translates to roughly 12-13 questions in the VA section, 10-11 in DM and again 13-14 questions in QA

    • Anmol, a minimum score of 95%ile is required for a call from XLRI and XIMB hence that should be the target. This is typically at 30-32 marks.

  22. Sir, Can you please discuss preparation strategies for XAT 2014? This will be my first shot at XAT and i don’t how to go about it. Since a few of the sections in this exam is different from what we get in the other exams i really need some advise as to how to go about it.

    • Srijata, will be writing a blogpost on XAT next week, till then take any old XAT paper (except 2011) to understand the structure and continue with what you did for CAT.

  24. Sir, Will my poor acads (X & XII) under 60% and graduation 69% affect XLRI BM/ HRM selection ? What should be the minimum target for me to overcome such poor acads..?

    • Prateek, XLRI is not as hung up on acads as some of the IIMs so your not so good acads are not a problem. Target over 98%ile in XAT, obviously the higher the percentile the easier it will be for you.

      • Sir, Will such acads be a problem in IIFT or NMAT ? How much should i aim minimum to get the respective colleges ? Assuming GD/PI to be fair !

        • Prateek, good acads are always helpful since many institutes have some weightage for past academics.
          Based on 2012 IIFT paper you should target 60+ marks to be reasonably sure of converting your interview call. Similarly based on last couple of years of NMAT you should have around 220 in NMAt to have a good chance of converting the interview call.

    • Shruti, XL does take acads performance into account but has not shared the details. My estimate is that is is not significant.

    • Mrityunjay with oer 35 marks in XAT you have a chance in all colleges that do not have sectional cutoffs. You have missed XLRI and XIMB because of poor English score. Hope you have applied to GIM, IMT-G, TAPMI etc.

    • Mahesh, the sectional cutoff for BM are English 80%ile, DM 80%ile, QA 90%ile and Overall 95%ile thus a call for you based on your revised scores is not possible.

    • Ashutosh, apologise for the delay in responding to your mail. Can you please post the updated XAT score.
      At this score you are unlikely to get XIMB due to low QA score. Apart from XL, IMT-G and XIMB others are possible.

    • Sahil, Hope you have applied to MICA (if interested in marketing), TAPMI and BIM Trichy. While BIMTECH Retail is possible my suggestion would be to avoid the sectoral programs since placement is usually easy for the general management PGDM

    • Sameer, there is nothing that can be done for the poor essay or 4.75 marks in GK. Just focus on your GD-Interview preparation and a good performance in this stage can cover up for the GK/Essay. Also do focus on GK for the interview esp current affairs.

  45. Sir i had calculated my XAT score as 26.50 but got only 17 . And I have seen in some blogs that many students are having this problem . I m sure the CL answer key would be very much in line with the actual answers . Could there be a loophole in the results ?

    • Rahul, it is possible that there is a glitch because many students have reported lower than expected QA scores. While there is very little chance of XAT responding there is no harm in writing to XAT about this.

    • Ankita, at present you can only apply to TAPMI and IMT at your scores. If interested in marketing apply to MICA also.

    • Deepak, apart from TAPMI you can apply to Wellingkar and MICA.
      Retail would be better than insurance (BIMTECH, I presume) however I would suggest avoiding the sectoral courses and go for the vanilla PGDM since placements are usually an issue.

    According to CL key my QA score was 10 which even I am very sure of. But the QA percentage given in my scorecard is 6.94 which comes up to only 2.49 marks. The marks of VA and DM are exactly the same as calculated earlier.
    Please help me with this.

    • Nishita, unfortunately thee is no way by which this can be verified because XAT will not share your OMR sheet or its answer key.

    There is lot of difference between the marks i calculated by the cl key and what i have actually scored, like in DM i calculated 8 marks for sure but my percentage is only 22. Is there another way they calculate the percentage? Please tell.

    • Sir many students have this query now . The xat result is not in line with the CL answer key . How come the CL answer key is so wrong ??? I calculated 13 in DM while my %age is just 18. Or the XAT authorities have gone so wrong with there answers ??

  81. Sir in question 48 set c , the answer should be a and not c . It has only been mentioned in the RC that people were benefiting indirectly from corruption and so they never thought of protesting . But the fact that they supported Shambhu so much suggests that people had left that benefiting ideology . Also the last paragraph beginning with government’s inaction suggests that the answer should be in continuity of this .

    In ques 54 again , we are provided a piece of information and the answer should follow that . The senior suggested to talk to the student body directly and so one would contact the president of SPC and not college authorities after the chat ( student body is a reliable source , so no1 would hesitate contacting them )

    It has been assumed that the friends have other 20 friends in common while it is not given in the question . It has only been given that among sara’s 5 friends atleasr 2 are connected . No information is given about the other 25 friends

    But the park is a 40*30 rectangle,therefore a square and a rectangle cannot have the same diagonals

    • Aditya, You are likely to miss XL and XIMB but do apply to TAPMI, the others will not meet your criteria. Hope you have applied to NM Blr.

    • Rahul, QA could be you problem area but XL-HRM is possible, You should be able to get calls from almost all except XL-BM

    • Vinay, you can try TAPMI, LIBA and Welingkar. However you should seriously consider a second attempt at CAT if you can push VA to at least 90%ile.

    • Shankar, there is no specific lower cutoff for Orissa domicile but the institute gives some kind of preference to students from Orissa but that too is not clearly defined.

    • Ayush, irrespective of your VA score your QA is a problem and will most likely be the reason of missing out on a call from XL. XL is out but I would not rule out GIM or IMT or XIMB.

    • Harsh, how (and if) GK will be used by XIMB has not been declared hence can’t comment on it. However your QA score is a cause of worry and could be the reason of not getting call but XIMB is possible.

    I attempted around 61Questions in XAT. A score of around 36. With va and DM at 14 each but Quant only 7. My GK score is 13.5 or so.I wrote a good essay.What are my chances. I haven’t send any application this year and is just testing the scene. But I am keen to use this result in a productive way in future.
    I am 32 years old, and with a few years of work experience, a few years of entrepreneurial attempts. Also I hold a PGDM from a second rung BSchool. Last time, that is in 2004 XAT also, I scored high in Verbal, GK but Quant did me in.
    Kinda confused at the moment as my entr. route wasn’t a success. I am trying to reinvent myself and find a new path for my journey forward. Please help.

    • Nirmal, poor QA performance seems to be following you after so many years and I don’t think call is possible from XL. Given your work experience it would be prudent to go for a 1 year program from ISB or from Singapore or Hongkong.

    the DI qustions of the quant where too ambiguous (train timings set) data is not clear at all .(even though i considered my marked options as per ur keys)
    Even TIME said these are ambiguous …..

    as from last year’s cutff XL cut off goes down to 28-30 from 36-39(2012 yr xat) so might be gim cutoff wil also fall…!!

    • Sameer, you arre right there are ambiguous questions (as always) in XAT but I don’t think that GIM cutoff would go down to 17.5. Suggest you forget XAT nd move on. CMAT Feb’13 is possibly the last chance for anyone thus year hope you are taking the paper.     • Ankeet, the cutoffs given by me or by anyonne else is only an estimate and can be wrong especially on the margins so I will not rule you out. You have an outside chance of getting a BM call.

    • Neekat, you should get a call from XL BM at a score of 32 (sectional cut off cleared I presume).
      Till last year XL did not consider Part B for shortlisting the candidates and I expect them to follow the same this year also. Part B may be discussed during the interview.

    • Anuska, 4 in QA is a problem. While XL HR is ruled out you have an outside chance of call from XIMB HR but should get calls from XISS and XIME. The number of candidates is a function of the placement track record of the institute and somehow these two institutes have not been able to get on top of this parameter.

    • Sonal, XIMB website says that they will go be sectional and overall cutoffs however data from the past suggests that either it is not there or so low that it does not matter.

          • Mala, XIMB website says that they go by sectional and overall cutoffs however data suggests that either the sectional cutoffs are very low or they are not there hence unless you have a very low score in a section getting a call should not be a problem.

    • Shuban, going purely by XAT score you have a chance of call from XLRI but one does not know how will 0 in GK impact the overall scenario. TAPMI should be around 25-26 and Welingkar around 20-22

  180. Best analysis so far. I had about 50 attempts but due to inaccuracies in questions and one goofup on 2 question DI I only have about 37. However I feel that this was a 98% plus effort.
    Others claiming cutoffs of 40 are insane, 32 odd should definitely be enough.
    Im worried about XLRI mb quant cutoff, I only have 9.25, looks like I miss. I spent too much time on popper essay and spent only 25 odd minutes on QA DI, 11 seems a bit high for cutoff! I haven’t applied to other programs!
    Is CL looking for tutors? I have 99% on GMAT verbal (overall 770 due to quant disaster)
    Also earlier cat attempt 99.31 and 99 on couple of CL’s mocks that I took.

    • Aditi you have a chance from XL-HRM but BM is unlikely. Calls from all other institutes is possible. Incorrect questions are usually deleted.

    I am getting, as per CL key:
    VA 9.25
    DM 6.5
    QA 12.0 and GA: 15.75
    Sec-1 total: 27.75, with GA: 43.5.
    What are my chances in XLRI, XIM-B or SPJain?

    • Dev, at 27.75 XL-BM is ruled out but in XL-HR you have an outside chance subject to clearing the VA cutoff. XIMB andSP Jain should be possible.

  208. does ximb and IMT have sectional cutoff ???
    nd sir the cutoff for xlri bm is expected to be 30 [ as mentioned by u] so does a person expecting 32-34 marks expect a call from XLRI ??

    • Anant, if you clear the sectional cutoffs then at 32-34 you will get a call from XLRI. XIMB and IMT typically do not have sectional cutoffs.
