NMAT 2014: to Retake or not to Retake?

Ever since NMIMS declared its Window 1 Results (click here to access the results), we have been flooded with the following two questions:

  1. Which NMIMS campus can I get an inteview call from?
  2. Should I go for a retake?

Obviously the answer to these questions is in trying to predict the cutoff that NMIMS would have for its various programs. So let us first have a look at the cutoffs in the last two years.

What about NMAT 2014?

This NMAT 2014 cut off will obviously be impacted by the paper structure, difficulty level, the number of seats in each program, the number of applicants and also the seats to interview calls ratio. While the structure and the difficulty level of the paper have not changed in the last two years, the number of seats in FT MBA Mumbai has increased from 300 to 360. However there is also an increase in the number of applicants. Hence I would assume that the cut offs this year will not be very different from last year.

Based on the sectional and the overall scores I have created five categories as given below:

Category 1 students: Relax, you are likely to get interview calls from all the programs, focus on the other MBA entrance tests.

Category 2A students: While 80 is a safe score in QS, one cannot be certain of clearing the QS section at 75. Most probably you will get calls from NMIMS however you might choose not take any chance and go for a retake.

Category 2B students: Most probably you will not clear the QS sectional cut off for FT MBA at Mumbai campus, so if Mumbai is your target you should go for a retake. However, if you are satisfied with Bangalore or Hyderabad then a retake is not required. For a retake you should be confident of increasing your QS score by at least 5 marks and shifting to Category 2A.

Category 3 students: Except for FT MBA (Pharma) the others are unlikely to call you for an interview; hence, a retake is required. However, before deciding on the retake, please evaluate your total & sectional scores critically to decide if you will be able to reach at least Category 2B. If you think Category 2B scores are out of reach then do not go for a retake and instead focus on SNAP and CMAT.

Category 4 students: Howsoever cruel it might sound, I feel compelled to say that you will not get interview call from any course/campus at this score. Further, I would not recommend a retake also because the gap which you need to cover is huge and it is unlikely that you will be able to increase your sectional and the overall scores in the next 2-4 weeks. You would be better off focusing on SNAP and CMAT, which are definitely much more manageable.

Remember that this is just a guideline and you have to take your individual calls based on your ability to increase your scores, performance in CAT/IRMA and expected performance in SNAP and other tests. Give it a careful thought before deciding either way.

  3. Dear sir, it’s anxious days for a student like me whose only hopes are now pinned down on the nmat cutoff.
    I’ve an overall score of 207 with the sectionals being as follows:-
    QA: 74
    LR: 70
    VA: 63
    I’ve applied only for the Mumbai campus. What are my chances for a call?

    • Harsh, Both QA and Overall scores are on the border wrt NM Mumbai. Hopefully you will clear. Blr and Hyd should be clear.

  4. Sir i have a score of 206 in NMAT. I have cleared all sectional cutoffs as per last year. Do you think there is any possibility of the cutoffs decreasing by 2 marks for FT MBA Mumbai?

    • Neha, I would not rule out the cutoff coming down by a couple of marks since the number of seats in NM Mumbai have gone up by 30 but we will have to wait till 24th when NM will come out with its cutoffs.

    Coming to hyderabad campus, 2012 being the first batch (with around 32 students) who are recruited by 10-12 companies offering an average package around 8 lpa. Should i go for it condidering that i have more than 2yrs of workEx. Please suggest.

    • Hitesh NM Mumbai is unlikely at 202.
      Hyderabd campus performance is no bad for year 1 but given the batch size it is not representative of future performance. With 2 year wor experience I think you should look at other options.

    • Hitesh, with 197 marks NM Mumbai is unlikely. Two years down the line in 2015 NM Hyd should not be a problem and hence can be considered by freshers. Not sure if someone with 2 years work ex should go for it. A better option could be 1 year MBA from ISB or similar institutes.

    I read most of the comments that were posted above and hence I realized that 197 is too low a score to get into NMIMS Mumbai.I have applied for only the HR course in the Mumbai campus.
    I do not remember which site, but I remember reading a site where they had mentioned that the Core MBA cutoff last year was 208 but the MBA HR cutoff was 180.
    Is it true that MBA HR has a different cutoff as compared to Core MBA. If yes, then is 180 the right cutoff for MBA HR?

    Are there any chances of the cutoffs falling this year?

    • Pooja, Cut off for MBA HR and Core MBA is same at 208. It was 169 ffor MBA Pharma Management. The cutoffs could come down a bit this year because off increase in seats but it is unlikely to be less than 205.

    • Meenal, NM Bangalore can be considered as a backup but it is too early to comment on Hyderabad. NM Bangalore claims 100% placement with an average salary of Rs 7.8 lakh.

    • Shefali you will get call from NM Mumbai. It is no possible to apply to Blr now as the registration has closed. You could however check your account on NM website for a possibility. NM Blr is a decent back up option.

    • Faraz, both QA and OA needed to be more by a couple of marks for us to be sure of a call from Mumbai, QA cutoff is unlikely to reduce by 2 marks. Bangalore is possible and given that you will graduate in 2015 it can be considered as a back up option.

    • Sid, while you are likely to clear the sectional cut offs the overall score is likely to fall short by a couple of marks. However you could still havve a chance because the number of seats in Mumbai have increased by 30 o the cutoff could fall. Also this year I the scores appear to be less than last year.

    • Rupali, call form any program is unlikely because of 51 in LS, last year the cut off was at 55 and I do not expect it to fall.

    • Mukesh, it is a borderline case, hopefully the cutoff this year will be less than or equal to last year’s cut off of 208.

    • Sonal, the LS cut off last year was 55 and I don’t expect it to go down hence NM Mumbai FT MBA call is unlikely for you. Pharma Management call is possible.

    i wrote NMAT-RETAKE too, results are yet to be declared..
    whilr taking the retake exam i felt it was a bit tough to manage the same in the same time interval, as the questions were more calculation oriented.
    What are the chances of Scaling of the scores and fetching a call from Mumbai campus..
    as of now holding an experience of 18 months,till date..

    • Premlata, at 152 NMAT is over for you. Please start preparing for CMAT to be able to get a good score and hence a good college.

    Thanks a lot for your thoughtful reply. i got your point. i am not thinking about an huge hike in my CTC.That’s not my primary concern. i am thinking about boosting my career with an MBA degree and want to know that whether MBA from NMIMS Mumbai will be a good option learning,investment,career and future prospect wise?

    • Barun, NMIMS is a good institute and will give a boost to your career. The location of the institute is a big advantage however given that you will have almost 6 years experience by the time you join NM may not be the right place eg since most of the students here are likely to be less than 2 years work experience the teaching is also oriented accordingly. The right course for you would be the 1 year program from ISB/US/Singapore or the PGP X from the IIMs. Suggest that you go thru the NM process but simultaneously consider the 1 year programs for Sept joining.

    • Deepan, call is possible but your LR score is a bit dicey, last year’s cut off was 65 and if it does not increase you will get a call.

    • Tripti, at 162-163 there is no chance from any of the NM institutes, please forget NMAT and move on. Focus on CMAT and XAT.

    • Bro, I think its about what you really want. Do you want to join NMIMS for only CTC growth then the answer is no. But If you want to change your career path and switch to management without focusing too much on salary quotient then you can go ahead and join. Also, you have to explain a lot on WHY MBA NOW to penal members during PI. I also have 4 yr work ex. NMIMS Avg placement are not 13 lpa as quoted by them more like 10-11.

    • Nilanjana, Qa is possibly short by a couple of marks, if you clear the QA sectional cutoff then there is a good chance of a call.

    • Vinay, it is a touch and go for you. LR at 62 and OA at 207 are both short of safe score by 3-4 marks. You should however be able to get calls from Bangalore and Hyderabad campus which are good back up options.

    • Mukhtar, last year the cutoff for Pharma MBA was 169 with a minimum of 50 marks in each section hence you are unlikely to get a call for this program.

    • Atanu, this is a borderline case, most probably you will get a call but cannot be definite. Another 3-4 marks in QA would have been a definite call.

    • Nikunj to be sure of a call from NM Mumbai campus you should have a minimum of 80 in QA, 65 in LR and 55 in LS and a total of at least 210.

  63. With a score of 214(and clearing the forecasted sectional cutoffs) I hope to get a call.
    But I wanted to inquire as to what kind of a score one should have to stand a realistic chance of converting the call.

    • Raghav, last year NMAT had a 70% weight in the overall score. This year the NMAT scores appear to be lower than last year and hence 214 should be good enough for a final call.

    • Priya, your LS score should be at least 55 to clear the sectional cut off also your LR is on the border of the cut off. Suggest that in the next couple of days focus on LS and LR to ensure that you get at least 60 in English and 70 in Reasoning. QA at 85 is a very good score. The desired total score is at least 210.

    • Neel, this is the highest score of NMAT that I have seen this season. You will get interview calls and chances of final selection are very high.

    • Vijay, This is a difficult decision. 219 is an excellent score but 76 in QA could be a problem, last year the QA cutoff was 74 and the year before that it was 78. This year I have not seen too many 75+ scores in QA and the number of seats in Mumbai have also gone up from 300 to 360 so you should be able to clear the QA cutoff but it cannot be guaranteed. Unless you want to take a chance, go for a retake.

    • Nikhil, at 219 you have a very good score unfortunately you LR score is a bit on the lower side, you need another 3 marks to be sure of a call form Mumbai FT MBA, go for a retake.

    • Arijit, 5 more marks in QS and OA can get you calls from NM, suggest you go for a retake and target at least 80 and 215 in QA and OA respectively. SNAP and XAT will not be affected by a retake.

    • Prachi, go for a retake, your LR score should be at least 65 to be sure of a call, at 59 you are most likely to be below the cut off. Your OA, QA and LS are clear.

    • Shiv, to be able to get a call you will need to increase your score by around 35 marks which is difficult. If you think you can reach a score of 210 go for a retake else focus on SNAP and the other papers.

    • Anurag, based on last two years data, Mumbai is ruled out and Blr/Hyd could also be a borderline case. Suggest a retake.

    • Udit, can you increae your score by about 30 marks? If yes then go for a retake else focus on SNAP and the other papers. While QA is fine the other two are below the cut off level. what you have received is a scaled score.

    Sir Should i retake the test. i am really confused as to get a call i have to score more 30 no.s and my preparation is somehow same as on that day, i think i can solve 7-8 Q more i.e. 20-25 no.s (as i wasted 3-4 min in LR sec on that day) & i have applied for mumbai campus only. i can give retake only on 13/14 as i have SNAP on 16. so plz suggest me sir as soon as possible.

    • Kundan, it might be better for you to focus on SNAP rather than retake NMAT because you need to increase your score in all the sections.

    • Mohit, go for a retake, 205 could be a shade lower than the required score. QA is good, LR acceptable but LS and OA should go up by a minimum of 5 marks.

    • Shonit, you need to improve your OA score by around 30 marks. Target score for QA is 80, LS 65 and LR 70. All the best.

    • Swati I don’t think a retake is necessary but if you are confident of taking your OA score to 220+ then you can go for it.

    • Ravi, while you are on the borderline, I don’t think you need to go for a retake. Also the scope of improvement in QA and LR is not much, you can only hope to increase your score in LS.

  100. sir, i have snap, xat and plan to retake nmat in the coming days… my quant marks hover around the cutoff region be it in mocks of cat, nmat or even xat… my performance in both speed based or tougher quant questions are similar…
    sir i want to ur advice in…
    * when should i begin my xat level preparation…
    *should it begin after nmat & snap…
    *or should i do xat papers fast and then stick to snap and nmat levels till they are over…
    *should i redo the funda books now… since speed is a little problem for me…

    • Deepak, apologise for missing out on your query.
      Hope you have been preparing for SNAP and NMAT. XAT can start after SNAP and your focus should be on MCQs, CAT level QA and CR.

    • Vishal, if you can get 99%ile in CAT then most of the MBA institutes will be available to you. Focus on college studies to ensure good performance in BSc Part 2 along with MBA preparation.

    • Abhishek, I think you should be clear because the number of seats in FT MBA Mumbai has gone up from 300 to 360. However to be 100% safe you could go for a retake.

      • Yes, I have completed my retake but had received a reduced score of 191.. I believe 207 is the score to be considered..Could you tell if it would be sufficient enough??

    • Simranjeet, If you take the test on 3rd you may not get the score before 6th. Suggest that you stick to your original date and use to three extra days for preparation.

    • You should definitely go for next attempt. If you have got it wrong due to wrong selection please vist exam corner to see how you should attempt the paper

    Whats your view on the overall cutoff this year, given the number seats increasing from 300 to 360. Would there be a drop in overall score from 208?

    • While the number of seats in the Core MBA program have increased from 300 to 360, the MBA Actuarial Science program has been discontinued as given below:
      MBA Core – 300 increased to 360
      MBA Actuarial Science – 30 program discontinued
      MBA Banking – 60 no change
      MBA Capital Market 60 no change
      MBA HR – 30 no change
      MBA Pharmaceutical Management – 60 increased to 120

      Hence I don’t think it will be go up, it should be around the same level as last year.

    • Arpit, this is a real difficult decision because all other scores are very good. Given that last year the LR cut off for Mumbai campus was 61 you should be safe because the number of seats in FT MBA have increased from 300 to 360. However if you want to be 100% safe you should go for a retake.

    • Sid, I don’t a retake is required, you should get a call from all programs/campus. Last year the QS cutoff was 74 amd with the number of seats in FT MBA Mumbai increasing from 300 to 360 the QS cut off is unlikely to increase.

    • Arpit, at 194 I do not see a chance of a call from any program except Pharma Mgmt (Mumbai). For the retake you target should be QA-80, LS-65 and LR-70 hence it is LS and LR which have to be focused upon. Please identify the problem areas in these two and start working to improve upon them. In QA it is possibly a couple of extra correct answers that will two the trick so focus on accuracy and speed rather than concepts. Do attempt the four NMAT Mocks available in the CL website with detailed analysis and regular revision of the important questions.

    • Imran, I don’t a retake is required, you should get a call from all programs/campus. Last year the LR cutoff was 61, it was 66 the year before that, also with the number of seats in FT MBA Mumbai increasing from 300 to 360 the LR cut off is unlikely to increase.

    • Shashank, unless you are confident of increasing your score by 10-12 marks in each section you should not go for a retake.

    • Pavan, While you are most likely to clear the sectional cutoff your OA score needs to go by 10-12 marks to get a call from NMIMS Mumbai. However if you think you can crack SNAP then obviously you do not have to go for a NMAT retake. However since he gap between what you have scored and the desired score, suggest you go for a retake despite your semester exams.

    • Anil, Your LS score could be the reason for not getting a call, 55+ would have meant safety. You are on the borderline for Mumbai, let us hope for the best. You should get calls from Blr/Hyd

    • Sayan, LR and OA score are on the borderline for Mumbai for Blr/Hyd it should not be a problem. To be safe you need to have 4-5 more marks in both.

    • Anuj, you should go for a retake provided you can increase yous QS score by 10 marks. QS at 67 is likely to be below the sectional cutoff.

    Scores for NMAT are:
    QA – 79, LS -62 LR-68 OA = 209…
    few Slots are available in mid december near to SNAP paper.Should i focus on SNAP (GK) & XAT or practice more of input/output and other type of questions especially for NMAT?
    Kindly suggest as along with work I would be able to manage either of them.TIA

    • Dheeraj, my gut feel is that you should be able to get a call and you should focus on SNAP and XAT. Unless you want to play safe, you need not go for a retake.

    • The process has not been shared by NM or Pearson. Assume that all papers are of the same level of difficulty and work on the basis that raw score = normalised score.

  134. Will they consider sectional best for each section among the two tests (If I take retest) or it will be according to the best OA score ? The later situation is likely to happen… But still wanted to know !!

    • Roy, NMIMS in its information handout has said: “In case of candidates taking more than one attempt the best score which is the total score & its respective sectional score, which make the candidate eligible as per the cut offs declared by NMIMS, will be considered for short listing for subsequent process.
      Thus, the one which will ensure call will be considered. If both scores clear the sectional cutoff then the higher of the two total score will be considered.
